Functional Renormalization Group Study of Phonon Mode Effects on Chiral Critical Point

We apply the functional renormalization-group (FRG) equation to analyze the nature of the QCD critical point beyond the mean-field approximation by taking into consideration the fact that the soft mode associated with the QCD critical point is a linear combination of fluctuations of the chiral condensate and the quark-number density, rather than the pure chiral fluctuations. We first construct an extended quark-meson model in which a new field corresponding to quark-number density is introduced to the conventional one composed of the chiral fields sigma, pi and the quarks. The fluctuations of the quark-number density as well as the chiral condensate are taken into account by solving the FRG equation which contains sigma and the new field as coupled dynamical variables. It is found that the mixing of the two dynamical variables causes a kind of level repulsion between the curvature masses, which in turn leads to an expansion of the critical region of the QCD critical point, depending on the coupling constants in the model yet to be determined from microscopic theories or hopefully by experiments.

QCD Critical Points and Their Associated Soft Modes

The mean-field level calculation shows that the QCD matter can have multiple critical points incorporating the color superconductivity under charge neutrality constraint due to the repulsive vector interaction; this actually implies that the QCD matter is very soft for a simultaneous formation of diquark and chiral condensates coupled with the baryonic density. Dynamical density fluctuations are analyzed as possible soft modes around the QCD critical point using dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics. It is found that the entropy fluctuation solely gets enhanced while the sound modes due to mechanical density fluctuations are strongly attenuated around the QCD CP, which may suggest a suppression or even total disappearance of Mach cone at the CP.

Chaotic behavior in classical Yang-Mills dynamics

Understanding the underlying mechanisms causing rapid thermalization deduced for high-energy heavy ion collisions is still a challenge. To estimate the thermalization time, entropy growth for classical Yang-Mills theories is studied, based on the determination of Lyapunov exponents. Distinct regimes for short, medium and long sampling times are characterized by different properties of their spectrum of Lyapunov exponents. Clarifying the existence of these regimes and their implications for gauge-field dynamics is one of the results of this contribution. As a phenomenological application we conclude that for pure gauge theories with random initial conditions thermalization occurs within few fm/c, an estimate which can be reduced by the inclusion of fermions, specific initial conditions, etc.

Structure of the sigma meson and the softening

We study the structure of the sigma meson, the lowest-lying resonance of the pi pi scattering in the scalar-isoscalar channel, through the softening phenomena associated with the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. We build dynamical chiral models to describe the pi pi scattering amplitude, in which the sigma meson is described either as the chiral partner of the pion or as the dynamically generated resonance through the pi pi attraction. It is shown that the internal structure is reflected in the softening phenomena; the softening pattern of the dynamically generated sigma meson is qualitatively different from the behavior of the chiral partner of the pion. On the other hand, in the symmetry restoration limit, the dynamically generated sigma meson behaves similarly to the chiral partner.

From 0 to 5000 in $2\times 10^{-24}$ seconds: Entropy production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We review what is known about the contributions to the final entropy from the different stages of a relativistic nuclear collision, including recent results on the decoherence entropy and the entropy produced during the hydrodynamic phase by viscous effects. We then present a general framework, based on the Husimi distribution function, for the calculation of entropy growth in quantum field theories, which is applicable to the earliest ("glasma") phase of the collision during which most of the entropy is generated. The entropy calculated from the Husimi distribution exhibits linear growth when the quantum field contains unstable modes and is asymptotically equal to the Kolmogorov-Sinaï (KS) entropy. We outline how the approach can be used to investigate the problem of entropy production in a relativistic heavy-ion reaction from first principles.

Dynamical Density Fluctuations around QCD Critical Point Based on Dissipative Relativistic Fluid Dynamics-possible fate of Mach cone at the critical point-

The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we study the dynamical density fluctuations around the critical point(CP) of Quantum Chromodynamics(QCD) using dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics in which the coupling of the density fluctuations to those of other conserved quantities is taken into account. We show that the sound mode which is directly coupled to the mechanical density fluctuation is attenuated and in turn the thermal mode becomes the genuine soft mode at the QCD CP. We give a speculation on the possible fate of a Mach cone in the vicinity of the QCD CP as a signal of the existence of the CP on the basis of the above findings. Secondly, we clarify that the so called first-order relativistic fluid dynamic equations have generically no problem to describe fluid dynamic phenomena with long wave lengths contrary to a naive suspect whereas even Israel-Stewart equation, a popular second-order equation, may not describe the hydrodynamic mode in general depending on the value of the relaxation time.

In-medium Pion and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry

The partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium is investigated in a model independent way by exploiting operator relations in QCD. An exact sum rule is derived for the quark condensate valid for all density. This sum rule is simplified at low density to a new relation with the in-medium quark condensate *, in-medium pion decay constant F_{pi}^t and in-medium pion wave-function renormalization Z_{pi}*. Calculating Z_{pi}*at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data and relating F_{pi}^t to the isovector pion-nucleus scattering length b_1^*, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleus interaction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms directly implies the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowledge of the in-medium pion mass m_{pi}* is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

The low-lying Scalar Mesons and Related Topics

After presenting the motivations to explore the low-lying scalar mesons such as the $σ$, $a_0$ and $κ$ in the unquenched as well as quenched lattice QCD, we review the works done by our collaboration (SCALAR Collaboration) with a what-to-do-next list. We briefly mention the imporatance to explore the $N_c$ dependence of and possible effects of the $U_A(1)$ anomaly to the properties the low-lying scalar mesons.

Lattice QCD study of $g_A^{N^*N^*}$ with two flavors of dynamical quarks

We report the first lattice QCD result of the axial charge of N(1535), $g_A^{N^*N^*}$. The measurement is performed with two flavors of dynamical quarks employing the renormalization-group improved gauge action at $β$=1.95 and the mean-field improved clover quark action with the hopping parameters, $κ$=0.1375, 0.1390 and 0.1400. In order to avoid the signal contaminations by N(1650) lying just 100 MeV above N(1535), we construct 2$\times$2 correlation matrices and diagonalize them so that clear signal separation can be found. The wraparound contributions in the correlator, which can be another source of signal contamination, are eliminated by imposing the Dirichlet boundary condition in the temporal direction. We find that the axial charge of N(1535) takes small values as $g_A^{N^*N^*}\sim 0.2$, independent of quark masses, in the pion-mass range of 0.7 to 1.1 GeV.

In-medium Pions and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry: a model-independent analysis

Exploiting operator relations in QCD, we derive a novel and model-independent formula relating the in-medium quark condensate * to the decay constant F*_t and the wave function renormalization constant Z* of the pion in the nuclear medium. Evaluating Z* at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleusinteraction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms implies directly the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowlege of the in-medium pion mass is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

Derivation of Covariant Dissipative Fluid Dynamics in the Renormalization-group Method

We derive generic relativistic hydrodynamical equations with dissipative effects from the underlying Boltzmann equation in a mechanical and systematic way on the basis of so called the renormalization-group (RG) method. A macroscopic frame vector is introduced to specify the frame on which the macroscopic dynamics is described. Our method is so mechanical with only few ansatz that our method give a microscopic foundation of the available hydrodynamical equations, and also can be applied to make a reduction of the kinetic equations other than the simple Boltzmann equation.

Extensive study of phase diagram for charge neutral homogeneous quark matter affected by dynamical chiral condensation -- unified picture for thermal unpairing transitions from weak to strong coupling --

We study the phase structures of charge neutral quark matter under the beta-equilibrium for a wide range of the quark-quark coupling strength within a four-Fermion model. A comprehensive and unified picture for the phase transitions from weak to strong coupling is presented. We first develop a technique to deal with the gap equation and neutrality constraints without recourse to numerical derivatives, and show that the off-diagonal color densities automatically vanish with the standard assumption for the diquark condensates. The following are shown by the numerical analyses: (i) The thermally-robustest pairing phase is the two-flavor pairing (2SC) in any coupling case, while the second one for relatively low density is the up-quark pairing (uSC) phase or the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase depending on the coupling strength and the value of strange quark mass. (ii) If the diquark coupling strength is large enough, the phase diagram is much simplified and is free from the instability problems associated with imaginary Meissner masses in the gapless phases. (iii) The interplay between the chiral and diquark dynamics may bring a non-trivial first order transition even in the pairing phases at high density. We confirm (i) also by using the Ginzburg-Landau analysis expanding the pair susceptibilities up to quartic order in the strange quark mass. We obtain the analytic expression for the doubly critical density where the two lines for the second order phase transitions merge, and below which the down-quark pairing (dSC) phase is taken over by the uSC phase. Also we study how the phase transitions from fully gapped states to partially ungapped states are smeared at finite temperature by introducing the order parameters for these transitions.

Overdamping Phenomena near the Critical Point in O($N$) Model

We consider the dynamic critical behavior of the propagating mode for the order parameter fluctuation of the O($N$) Ginzburg-Landau theory, involving the canonical momentum as a degree of freedom. We reexamine the renormalization group analysis of the Langevin equation for the propagating mode. We find the fixed point for the propagating mode as well as that for the diffusive one, the former of which is unstable to the latter. This indicates that the propagating mode becomes overdamped near the critical point. We thus can have a sufficient understanding of the phonon mode in the structural phase transition of solids. We also discuss the implication for the chiral phase transition.

How do chiral condensates affect color superconducting quark matter under charge neutrality constraints?

We investigate the effects of the dynamical formation of the chiral condensates on color superconducting phases under the electric and color neutrality constraints at vanishing temperature. We shall show that the phase appearing next to the color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase down in density depends on the strength of the diquark coupling. In particular, the gapless CFL (gCFL) phase is realized only in a weak coupling regime. We give a qualitative argument on why the gCFL phase in the weak coupling region is replaced by some other phases in the strong coupling, once the competition between dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and the Cooper pair formation is taken into account.

Lattice QCD Study of the Pentaquark Baryons

We study the spin $\frac12$ hadronic state in quenched lattice QCD to search for a possible $S=+1$ pentaquark resonance. Simulations are carried out on $8^3\times 24$, $10^3\times 24$, $12^3\times 24$ and $16^3\times 24$ lattices at $β$=5.7 at the quenched level with the standard plaquette gauge action and Wilson quark action. We adopt two independent operators with I=0 and $J^P=\frac12$ to construct a $2\times 2$ correlation matrix. After the diagonalization of the correlation matrix, we successfully obtain the energies of the ground-state and the 1st excited-state in this channel. The volume dependence of the energies suggests the existence of a possible resonance state slightly above the NK threshold in I=0 and $J^P=\frac12^-$ channel.

Pseudogap of Color Superconductivity in Heated Quark Matter

We show that the pseudogap of the quark density of states is formed in hot quark matter as a precursory phenomenon of the color superconductivity on the basis of a low-energy effective theory. We clarify that the decaying process of quarks near Fermi surface to a hole and the diquark soft mode (qq)_{soft} is responsible for the formation of the pseudogap. Our result suggests that the pseudogap is a universal phenomenon in strong coupling superconductors.

Effects of Vector Coupling on Chiral and Color-superconducting Phase Transitions -- interplay among the scalar, pairing and vector interaction --

We investigate effects of the vector interaction appearing in chiral effective Lagrangians on the chiral and color superconducting (CSC) phase transitions using Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. It is shown that the repulsive density-density interaction coming from the vector term enhances competition between the chiral symmerty breaking and CSC phase transition: When the vector coupling is increased, the first order transition between the chiral symmerty breaking and CSC phase becomes weaker, and the coexisting phase in which both the chiral and color-gauge symmetries are dynamically broken comes to exisit in a wider region in the T-μplane. We find that the critical line of the first order transition can have two endpoints for an intermediate range of the vector coupling.
