Characteristic properties of Planacon MCP-PMTs

A systematic investigation of Planacon MCP-PMTs was performed using 64 XP85002/FIT-Q photosensors. These devices are equipped with microchannel plates of reduced resistance. Results of a study of their gain stability over time and saturation level in terms of the average anode current are presented. This information allows one to determine the lower limit of the MCP resistance for stable Planacon operation. The spread of the electron multiplication characteristics for the entire production batch is also presented, indicating the remarkably low voltage requirements of these MCP-PMTs. Detection efficiency and noise characteristics, such as dark count rate and afterpulsing level, are also reviewed.

Anode current saturation of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs

We have measured and compared the characteristics of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs (XP85112/A1-Q-L) with their non-ALD counterparts (XP85012/A1-Q). While the later show excellent performance, the ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (~two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. To make a definite conclusion, more samples need to be tested, preferably from different production runs. If our observation were confirmed, it would mean a serious technological setback for ALD-coated MCP-PMTs.

Emission of forward neutrons by 158A GeV indium nuclei in collisions with Al, Cu, Sn and Pb

The cross sections of forward emission of one, two and three neutrons by 158A GeV 115In nuclei in collisions with Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets are reported. The measurements were performed in the framework of the ALICE-LUMI experiment at the SPS facility at CERN. Various corrections accounting for the absorption of beam nuclei and produced neutrons in target material and surrounding air were introduced. The corrected cross section data are compared with the predictions of the RELDIS model for electromagnetic fragmentation of 115In in ultraperipheral collisions, as well as with the results of the abrasion-ablation model for neutron emission in hadronic interactions. The measured neutron emission cross sections well agree with the RELDIS results, with the exception of In-Al collisions where the measured cross sections are larger compared to RELDIS. This is attributed to a relatively large contribution of hadronic fragmentation of In on Al target with respect to electromagnetic fragmentation, on the contrary to similar measurements performed earlier with 30A GeV 208Pb colliding with Al.

An Improved Shashlyk Calorimeter

Shashlyk electromagnetic calorimeter modules with an energy resolution of about 3%/sqrt{E (GeV)} for 50-1000 MeV photons has been developed, and a prototype tested. Details of these improved modules, including mechanical construction, selection of wave shifting fibers and photo-detectors, and development of a new scintillator with improved optical and mechanical properties are described. How the modules will perform in a large calorimeter was determined from prototype measurements. The experimentally determined characteristics of the calorimeter prototype show energy resolution of sigma_E/E=(1.96+-0.1)% \oplus (2.74+-0.05)%/sqrt{E}, time resolution of sigma_T = (72+-4)/sqrt{E} \oplus (14+-2)/E (ps), where photon energy E is given in GeV units and \oplus means a quadratic summation. A punch-through inefficiency of photon detection was measured to be ε= 5*10^{-5} (Θ>5 mrad).

Development of Shashlyk Calorimeter for KOPIO

A Shashlyk calorimeter prototype for the KOPIO experiment has been constructed and experimentally tested. The energy resolution of about 4%/sqrt(E(GeV)) for 0.5-2.0 GeV/c positrons was obtained. Based on this results as well as on the results of special measurements, a Monte-Carlo model of the Shashlyk module response was developed. This model, including the effects of shower evolution, light collection in scintillator plates, light attenuation in fibers, quantum efficiency of the photodetector, thresholds and noises in the readout system is consistent with experimental results. Possible improvment of the Shashlyk energy resolution up to 3%/sqrt(E(GeV)), the level required by KOPIO experiment, are discussed.
