A plasma-material interaction design basis for NSTX-U flash lithium evaporators

Plasma-material interaction (PMI) at lithium conditioned plasma facing components (PFCs) depends not only on lithium inventory, but also on coating freshness, chemical state, and spatial coverage. We use LTX-$\beta$ measurements and lithium evaporator development to translate these constraints into a design basis for the NSTX-U flash lithium evaporator (f-LITER). During an LTX-$\beta$ run day with evaporations at the beginning and midpoint of the run day, discharges immediately after each evaporation exhibited higher plasma current, lower line averaged density, and shorter effective particle confinement times than later discharges with identical programmed fueling and coil currents, consistent with stronger particle pumping by the freshly conditioned wall. The subsequent relaxation is interpreted in the context of published in vacuo x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy observations of Li$_2$O growth and molecular dynamics calculations showing that deuterium reflection and retention depend on oxide thickness. To refresh this evolving interface while limiting contamination, a low thermal mass evaporator was coupled to an in vacuo liquid lithium dropper and tested on LTX-$\beta$ and in a dedicated test chamber. Quartz crystal microbalance measurements gave a 401 nm deposition in 17.4 min, equivalent to 100 nm in approximately 4.8 min of active evaporation. A qualitative temperature programmed desorption comparison showed weaker impurity desorption from a coating deposited by the evaporator loaded using the liquid dropper than from one deposited by the evaporator loaded with solid lithium. These results establish the PMI requirements for an NSTX-U f-LITER architecture based on the LTX-$\beta$ low thermal mass evaporators. The system is intended to make lithium delivery a reproducible PMI actuator for controlling recycling, impurity uptake, and PFC conditioning in double null NSTX-U operation.

The Fourier Ratio and complexity of signals

We study the Fourier ratio of a signal $f:\mathbb Z_N\to\mathbb C$, \[ \mathrm{FR}(f)\ :=\ \sqrt{N}\,\frac{\|\widehat f\|_{L^1(\mu)}}{\|\widehat f\|_{L^2(\mu)}} \ =\ \frac{\|\widehat f\|_1}{\|\widehat f\|_2}, \] as a simple scalar parameter governing Fourier-side complexity, structure, and learnability. Using the Bourgain--Talagrand theory of random subsets of orthonormal systems, we show that signals concentrated on generic sparse sets necessarily have large Fourier ratio, while small $\mathrm{FR}(f)$ forces $f$ to be well-approximated in both $L^2$ and $L^\infty$ by low-degree trigonometric polynomials. Quantitatively, the class $\{f:\mathrm{FR}(f)\le r\}$ admits degree $O(r^2)$ $L^2$-approximants, which we use to prove that small Fourier ratio implies small algorithmic rate--distortion, a stable refinement of Kolmogorov complexity.

Buffon Needle Problem Over Convex Sets

We solve a variant of the classical Buffon Needle problem. More specifically, we inspect the probability that a randomly oriented needle of length $l$ originating in a bounded convex set $X\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ lies entirely within $X$. Using techniques from convex geometry, we prove an isoperimetric type inequality, showing that among sets $X$ with equal perimeter, the disk maximizes this probability.

Direct neutrino-mass measurement based on 259 days of KATRIN data

The fact that neutrinos carry a non-vanishing rest mass is evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. Their absolute mass bears important relevance from particle physics to cosmology. In this work, we report on the search for the effective electron antineutrino mass with the KATRIN experiment. KATRIN performs precision spectroscopy of the tritium $\beta$-decay close to the kinematic endpoint. Based on the first five neutrino-mass measurement campaigns, we derive a best-fit value of $m_\nu^{2} = {-0.14^{+0.13}_{-0.15}}~\mathrm{eV^2}$, resulting in an upper limit of $m_\nu < {0.45}~\mathrm{eV}$ at 90 % confidence level. With six times the statistics of previous data sets, amounting to 36 million electrons collected in 259 measurement days, a substantial reduction of the background level and improved systematic uncertainties, this result tightens KATRIN's previous bound by a factor of almost two.

Inverse melting and intertwined orders in PrCuSb$_2$

Much of the rich physics of correlated systems is manifested in the diverse range of intertwined ordered phases and other quantum states that are associated with different electronic and structural degrees of freedom. Here we find that PrCuSb$_2$ exhibits such phenomena, which at ambient pressure exhibits a fragile antiferromagnetic order, where cooling in a small $c$ axis magnetic field leads to an additional transition to a field-induced ferromagnetic state. This corresponds to an 'inverse melting' effect, whereby further cooling the system restores symmetries of the paramagnetic state broken at the antiferromagnetic transition. Moreover, hydrostatic pressure induces an additional first-order transition at low temperatures, which despite being not likely associated with solely magnetic degrees of freedom, is closely entwined with the magnetic order, disappearing once antiferromagnetism is destroyed by pressure or magnetic fields. Consequently, PrCuSb$_2$ presents a distinct scenario for interplay between different orders, underscoring the breadth of such behaviors within one family of correlated materials.

Spectral profile of ro-vibrational transitions of HCl broadened by He, Ar and SF6: testing the $\beta$-correction to the Hartmann-Tran profile and the speed dependent (complex) hard collision model

The $\beta$-correction to the Hartmann-Tran (HT) profile, recently introduced to model the spectral shape of a molecular transition strongly affected by the Dicke narrowing effect (Konefal et al., JQSRT 242 (2020) 106784), the HT profile (Ngo et al., JQSRT 129 (2013) 89), and the speed dependent (complex) hard collision model (SDcHC, in which the velocity changing collision rate is characterized by a complex number) are tested using spectra of two rovibrational lines of HCl. The R(5) and R(9) lines of the fundamental band of HCl broadened by He, Ar and SF$_6$ have been recorded with a difference-frequency laser spectrometer for total pressures ranging from 12 to 930 mbar. These lines, measured in large pressure ranges with different collision-partners provide a meaningful test of the above-mentioned line-shape models. The results confirm that non-Voigt effects are significant for HCl broadened by Ar and SF$_6$ and mainly due to the large influence of the Dicke narrowing effect. For HCl-SF$_6$ and HCl-Ar, especially for the R(9) line, using the $\beta$-correction together with the HT profile (and with the speed-dependent hard collision model, SDHC) significantly improves the fit residuals while it has no effect on (or tends to deteriorate) the quality of the fit for HCl-He and for the R(5) line of HCl-SF$_6$, for which the influence of velocity changing collisions is smaller. Except for HCl-He, the SDcHC model leads to better quality of fit compared to the HT profile. The results also show that numerical correlations between refined line-shape parameters of the HT profile are important and can lead to ill-determined parameters while they are more properly determined with the SDcHC model.

Magnetic properties of the layered heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePdGa$_6$

We report the magnetic properties of the layered heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePdGa$_{6}$, and their evolution upon tuning with the application of magnetic field and pressure. CePdGa$_{6}$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T\rm_{N}$ = 5.2 K, where there is evidence for heavy fermion behavior from an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient. Our results are best explained by a magnetic ground state of ferromagnetically coupled layers of Ce $4f$-moments orientated along the $c$-axis, with antiferromagnetic coupling between layers. At low temperatures we observe two metamagnetic transitions for fields applied along the $c$-axis corresponding to spin-flip transitions, where the lower transition is to a different magnetic phase with a magnetization one-third of the saturated value. From our analysis of the magnetic susceptibility, we propose a CEF level scheme which accounts for the Ising anisotropy at low temperatures, and we find that the evolution of the magnetic ground state can be explained considering both antiferromagnetic exchange between nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor layers, indicating the influence of long-range interactions. Meanwhile we find little change of $T\rm_{N}$ upon applying hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa, suggesting that significantly higher pressures are required to examine for possible quantum critical behaviors.

High-Statistics Measurement of Antineutrino Quasielastic-like scattering at $E_\nu \sim$ 6~GeV on a Hydrocarbon Target

We present measurements of the cross section for anti-neutrino charged-current quasielastic-like scattering on hydrocarbon using the medium energy (ME) NuMI wide-band neutrino beam peaking at $ \sim 6$ GeV. The cross section measurements are presented as a function of the longitudinal momentum ($p_{||}$) and transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) of the final state muon. This work complements our previously reported high statistics measurement in the neutrino channel and extends the previous anti-neutrino measurement made in the low energy (LE) beam at neutrino energy($ $) $\sim$ 3.5 GeV to $p_{T}$ of 2.5 GeV/c. Current theoretical models do not completely describe the data in this previously unexplored high $p_{T}$ region. The single differential cross section as a function of four momentum transfer ($Q^{2}_{QE}$) now extends to 4 GeV$^2$ with high statistics. The cross section as a function of $Q^{2}_{QE}$ shows that the tuned simulations developed by the MINERvA collaboration that agreed well with the low energy beam measurements do not agree as well with the medium energy beam measurements. Newer neutrino interaction models such as the GENIE 3 tunes are better able to simulate the high $Q^{2}_{QE}$.

Simultaneous measurement of muon neutrino $\nu_\mu$ charged-current single $\pi^+$ production in CH, C, H$_2$O, Fe, and Pb targets in MINERvA

Neutrino-induced charged-current single $\pi^+$ production in the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance region is of considerable interest to accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. In this work, high statistics differential cross sections are reported for the semi-exclusive reaction $\nu_\mu A \to \mu^- \pi^+ +$ nucleon(s) on scintillator, carbon, water, iron, and lead targets recorded by MINERvA using a wide-band $\nu_\mu$ beam with $\left< E_\nu \right> \approx 6$~GeV. Suppression of the cross section at low $Q^2$ and enhancement of low $T_\pi$ are observed in both light and heavy nuclear targets compared to phenomenological models used in current neutrino interaction generators. The cross-section ratios for iron and lead compared to CH across the kinematic variables probed are 0.8 and 0.5 respectively, a scaling which is also not predicted by current generators.

Constraining the NuMI neutrino flux using inverse muon decay reactions in MINERvA

Inverse muon decay, $\nu_\mu e^-\to\mu^-\nu_e$, is a reaction whose cross-section can be predicted with very small uncertainties. It has a neutrino energy threshold of $\approx 11$ GeV and can be used to constrain the high-energy part of the flux in the NuMI neutrino beam. This reaction is the dominant source of events which only contain high-energy muons nearly parallel to the direction of the neutrino beam. We have isolated a sample of hundreds of such events in neutrino and anti-neutrino enhanced beams, and have constrained the predicted high-energy flux.

Measurement of inclusive charged-current $\nu_\mu$ cross sections as a function of muon kinematics at $ \sim6~GeV$ on hydrocarbon

MINERvA presents a new analysis of inclusive charged-current neutrino interactions on a hydrocarbon target. We report single and double-differential cross sections in muon transverse and longitudinal momentum. These measurements are compared to neutrino interaction generator predictions from GENIE, NuWro, GiBUU, and NEUT. In addition, comparisons against models with different treatments of multi-nucleon correlations, nuclear effects, resonant pion production, and deep inelastic scattering are presented. The data recorded corresponds to $10.61\times10^{20}$ protons on target with a peak neutrino energy of approximately 6 GeV. The higher energy and larger statistics of these data extend the kinematic range for model testing beyond previous MINERvA inclusive charged-current measurements. The results are not well modeled by several generator predictions using a variety of input models.

Summary of the NuSTEC Workshop on Neutrino-Nucleus Pion Production in the Resonance Region

The NuSTEC workshop held at the University of Pittsburgh in October 2019 brought theorists and experimentalists together to discuss the state of modeling and measurements related to pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the kinematic region where pions are produced through both resonant and non-resonant mechanisms. Modeling of this region is of critical importance to the current and future accelerator- and atmospheric-based neutrino oscillation experiments. For the benefit of the community, links to the presentations are accompanied by annotations from the speakers highlighting significant points made during the presentations and resulting discussions.

Evolution of charge density wave order and superconductivity under pressure in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

We report measurements of the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystalline LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ under pressure, in order to investigate the interplay of superconductivity and CDW order. LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits a first order phase transition from a tetragonal to orthorhombic structure, accompanied by the onset of CDW order below $T_{\rm{CDW}}$ = 76 K, while superconductivity occurs at a lower temperature of $T_{\rm{c}}$ = 1.87 K. We find that the application of pressure initially suppresses the CDW transition, but enhances $T_{\rm{c}}$. At pressures above 2.4 GPa, CDW order vanishes, while both $T_{\rm{c}}$ and the resistivity $A$-coefficient reach a maximum value around this pressure. Our results suggest that the occurrence of a superconducting dome can be accounted for within the framework of BCS theory, where there is a maximum in the density of states upon the closure of the CDW gap.

Double-Differential Inclusive Charged-Current $\nu_\mu$ Cross Sections on Hydrocarbon in MINERvA at $\langle E_{\nu} \rangle \sim$ 3.5 GeV

MINERvA reports inclusive charged-current cross sections for muon neutrinos on hydrocarbon in the NuMI beamline. We measured the double-differential cross section in terms of the longitudinal and transverse muon momenta, as well as the single-differential cross sections in those variables. The data used in this analysis correspond to an exposure of $3.34 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target with a peak neutrino energy of approximately 3.5 GeV. Measurements are compared to the GENIE, NuWro and GiBUU neutrino cross-section predictions, as well as a version of GENIE modified to produce better agreement with prior exclusive MINERvA measurements. None of the models or variants were able to successfully reproduce the data across the entire phase space, which includes areas dominated by each interaction channel.

Probing nuclear effects with neutrino-induced charged-current neutral pion production

We study neutrino-induced charged-current (CC) $\pi^0$ production on carbon nuclei using events with fully imaged final-state proton-$\pi^0$ systems. Novel use of final-state correlations based on transverse kinematic imbalance enable the first measurements of the struck nucleon's Fermi motion, of the intranuclear momentum transfer (IMT) dynamics, and of the final-state hadronic momentum configuration in neutrino pion production. Event distributions are presented for i) the momenta of neutrino-struck neutrons below the Fermi surface, ii) the direction of missing transverse momentum characterizing the strength of IMT, and iii) proton-pion momentum imbalance with respect to the lepton scattering plane. The observed Fermi motion and IMT strength are compared to the previous MINERvA measurement of neutrino CC quasielastic-like production. The measured shapes and absolute rates of these distributions, as well as the cross-section asymmetries show tensions with predictions from current neutrino generator models.

High-statistics measurement of neutrino quasielastic-like scattering at =~6 GeV on a hydrocarbon target

We measure neutrino charged current quasielastic-like scattering on hydrocarbon at high statistics using the wide-band NuMI beam with neutrino energy peaked at 6 GeV. The double-differential cross section is reported in terms of muon longitudinal and transverse momentum. Cross-section contours versus lepton momentum components are approximately described by a conventional generator-based simulation, however discrepancies are observed for transverse momenta above 0.5 GeV/c for longitudinal momentum ranges 3 to 5 GeV/c and 9 to 20 GeV/c. The single differential cross section versus momentum transfer squared ($d\sigma/dQ_{QE}^2$) is measured over a four-decade range of $Q^2$ that extends to $10~GeV^2$. The cross section turn-over and fall-off in the $Q^2$ range 0.3 to $10~GeV^2$ is not fully reproduced by generator predictions that rely on dipole form factors. Our measurement probes the axial-vector content of the hadronic current and complements the electromagnetic form factor data obtained using electron-nucleon elastic scattering. These results help oscillation experiments because they probe the importance of various correlations and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus, which have different effects on the visible energy in detectors.

Impurity Moments Conceal Low-Energy Relaxation of Quantum Spin Liquids

We scrutinize the magnetic properties of $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl through its first-order metal-insulator transition at $T_{\rm CO}=30$ K by means of $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). While in the metal we find Fermi-liquid behavior with temperature-independent $(T_1T)^{-1}$, the relaxation rate exhibits a pronounced enhancement when charge order sets in. The NMR spectra remain unchanged through the transition and no magnetic order stabilizes down to 25 mK. Similar to the isostructural spin-liquid candidates $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ and $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$, $T_1^{-1}$ acquires a dominant maximum (here around 5 K). Field-dependent experiments identify the low-temperature feature as a dynamic inhomogeneity contribution that is typically dominant over the intrinsic relaxation but gets suppressed with magnetic field.

Nuclear binding energy and transverse momentum imbalance in neutrino-nucleus reactions

We have measured new observables based on the final state kinematic imbalances in the mesonless production of $\nu_\mu+A\rightarrow\mu^-+p+X$ in the $\text{MINER}\nu\text{A}$ tracker. Components of the muon-proton momentum imbalances parallel ($\delta p_\mathrm{Ty}$) and perpendicular($\delta p_\mathrm{Tx}$) to the momentum transfer in the transverse plane are found to be sensitive to the nuclear effects such as Fermi motion, binding energy and non-QE contributions. The QE peak location in $\delta p_\mathrm{Ty}$ is particularly sensitive to the binding energy. Differential cross sections are compared to predictions from different neutrino interaction models. The Fermi gas models presented in this study cannot simultaneously describe features such as QE peak location, width and the non-QE events contributing to the signal process. Correcting the GENIE's binding energy implementation according to theory causes better agreement with data. Hints of proton left-right asymmetry are observed in $\delta p_\mathrm{Tx}$. Better modeling of the binding energy can reduce bias in neutrino energy reconstruction and these observables can be applied in current and future experiments to better constrain nuclear effects.
