Interface Ferromagnetism in (110)-Oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 Ultrathin Superlattices

We explore manganite interface magnetism in epitaxially grown La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)/SrTiO3 ultrathin superlattices (SL) along (110) orientation. we show that robust ferromagnetism persists down to four monolayers LSMO(MLs) (~1.1 nm in thickness), of which 50% Mn is at the interface state. Above eight MLs, the magnetic moment is nearly saturated to the theoretical value of 3.7u_B, with an estimated interface moment of 3.2u_B. In comparison to (100)-oriented SLs which were previously shown to have a spin canted ground state, (110)-oriented SLs exhibit stronger low-dimensional ferromagnetism and better metallicity, suggesting a ferromagnetic interface spin state well suited for all-oxide spintronic devices. The underlining mechanism is qualitatively discussed.

Poincare Invariant Three-Body Scattering

Relativistic Faddeev equations for three-body scattering are solved at arbitrary energies in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. Relativistic invariance is incorporated withing the framework of Poincaré invariant quantum mechanics. Based on a Malfliet-Tjon interaction, observables for elastic and breakup scattering are calculated and compared to non-relativistic ones.

Faddeev and Glauber Calculations at Intermediate Energies in a Model for n+d Scattering

Obtaining cross sections for nuclear reactions at intermediate energies based on the Glauber formulation has a long tradition. Only recently the energy regime of a few hundred MeV has become accessible to ab-initio Faddeev calculations of three-body scattering. In order to go to higher energies, the Faddeev equation for three-body scattering is formulated and directly solved without employing a partial wave decomposition. In the simplest form the Faddeev equation for interacting scalar particles is a three-dimensional integral equation in five variables, from which the total cross section, the cross sections for elastic scattering and breakup reactions, as well as differential cross sections are obtained. The same observables are calculated based on the Glauber formulation. The first order Glauber calculation and the Glauber rescattering corrections are compared in detail with the corresponding terms of the Faddeev multiple scattering series for projectile energies between 100 MeV and 2 GeV.

Poincaré Invariant Three-Body Scattering at Intermediate Energies

The relativistic Faddeev equation for three-nucleon scattering is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. The equation is solved through Padé summation, and the numerical feasibility and stability of the solution is demonstrated. Relativistic invariance is achieved by constructing a dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group on the three-nucleon Hilbert space. Based on a Malfliet-Tjon type interaction, observables for elastic and break-up scattering are calculated for projectile energies in the intermediate energy range up to 2 GeV, and compared to their nonrelativistic counterparts. The convergence of the multiple scattering series is investigated as a function of the projectile energy in different scattering observables and configurations. Approximations to the two-body interaction embedded in the three-particle space are compared to the exact treatment.

Three-body scattering in Poincaré invariant quantum mechanics

The relativistic three-nucleon problem is formulated by constructing a dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group on the three-nucleon Hilbert space. Two-body interactions are included that preserve the Poincaré symmetry, lead to the same invariant two-body S-matrix as the corresponding non-relativistic problem, and result in a three-body S-matrix satisfying cluster properties. The resulting Faddeev equations are solved by direct integration, without partial waves for both elastic and breakup reactions at laboratory energies up to 2 Gev.

Relativistic Effects in Exclusive pd Breakup Scattering at Intermediate Energies

The relativistic Faddeev equation for three-nucleon scattering is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. Relativistic invariance is achieved by constructing a dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group on the three-nucleon Hilbert space. The exclusive breakup reaction at 508 MeV is calculated based on a Malfliet-Tjon type of two-body interaction and the cross sections are compared to measured cross sections at this energy. We find that the magnitude of the relativistic effects can be quite large and depends on the configurations considered. In spite of the simple nature of the model interaction, the experimental cross sections are in surprisingly good agreement with the predictions of the relativistic calculations. We also find that although for specific configurations the multiple scattering series converges rapidly, this is in general not the case.

Relativistic Three-Body Scattering in a First Order Faddeev Formulation

Relativistic Faddeev equations for three-body scattering at arbitrary energies are solved in first order in the two-body transition operator in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. Relativistic invariance is incorporated within the framework of Poincar{é} invariant quantum mechanics. Based on a Malfliet-Tjon type interaction, observables for elastic and breakup scattering are calculated and compared to the nonrelativistic ones.

First Order Relativistic Three-Body Scattering

Relativistic Faddeev equations for three-body scattering at arbitrary energies are formulated in momentum space and in first order in the two-body transition-operator directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. Relativistic invariance is incorporated within the framework of Poincare invariant quantum mechanics, and presented in some detail. Based on a Malfliet-Tjon type interaction, observables for elastic and break-up scattering are calculated up to projectile energies of 1 GeV. The influence of kinematic and dynamic relativistic effects on those observables is systematically studied. Approximations to the two-body interaction embedded in the three-particle space are compared to the exact treatment.

Status of Project GRAND's Proportional Wire Chamber Array

Project GRAND is an extensive air shower array of proportional wire chambers. It has 64 stations in a 100m x 100m area; each station has eight planes of proportional wire chambers with a 50 mm steel absorber plate above the bottom two planes. This arrangement of planes, each 1.25 square meters of area, allow an angular measurement for each track to 0.25 degrees in each of two projections. The steel absorber plate allows a measurement of the identity of each muon track to 96% accuracy. Two data-taking triggers allow data to be simultaneously taken for a) extensive air showers (multiple coincidence station hits) at about 1 Hz and b) single muons (single tracks of identified muons) at 2000 Hz. Eight on-line computers pre-analyze the single track data and store the results on magnetic tape in compacted form with a minimum of computer dead-time. One additional computer reads data from the shower triggers and records this raw data on a separate magnetic tape with no pre-analysis.
