Energy correlations for a random matrix model of disordered bosons

Linearizing the Heisenberg equations of motion around the ground state of an interacting quantum many-body system, one gets a time-evolution generator in the positive cone of a real symplectic Lie algebra. The presence of disorder in the physical system determines a probability measure with support on this cone. The present paper analyzes a discrete family of such measures of exponential type, and does so in an attempt to capture, by a simple random matrix model, some generic statistical features of the characteristic frequencies of disordered bosonic quasi-particle systems. The level correlation functions of the said measures are shown to be those of a determinantal process, and the kernel of the process is expressed as a sum of bi-orthogonal polynomials. While the correlations in the bulk scaling limit are in accord with sine-kernel or GUE universality, at the low-frequency end of the spectrum an unusual type of scaling behavior is found.

Superconductor-Ferromagnet Bi-Layers: a Comparison of s-Wave and d-Wave Order Parameters

We study superconductor-ferromagnet bi-layers, not only for s-wave but also for d-wave superconductors. We observe oscillations of the critical temperature when varying the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer for both s-wave and d-wave superconductors. However, for a rotated d-wave order parameter the critical temperature differs considerably from that for the unrotated case. In addition we calculate the density of states for different thicknesses of the ferromagnetic layer; the results reflect the oscillatory behaviour of the superconducting correlations.

Influence of surface roughness on subdominant pairing in d-wave superconductors

We study a d-wave superconductor with dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter and subdominant pairing in either the $s$- or the $d_{xy}$-wave channel near a surface. In particular we analyze the influence of surface roughness on the mixed order parameter which may break the time-reversal symmetry. We find that the subdominant component is suppressed by the roughness independent of its pairing symmetry; for very rough surfaces the subdominant component may even vanish completely. Additionally we discuss a possible real-valued admixture which counteracts the suppression of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter at the surface.

Disordered Josephson Junctions of d-Wave Superconductors

We study the Josephson effect between weakly coupled d-wave superconductors within the quasiclassical theory, in particular, the influence of interface roughness on the current-phase relation and the critical current of mirror junctions and $45^\circ$ asymmetric junctions. For mirror junctions the temperature dependence of the critical current is non-monotonic in the limit of low roughness, but monotonic for very rough interfaces. For $45^\circ$ asymmetric junctions with a linear dimension much larger than the superconducting coherence length we find a $\sin(2ϕ)$-like current-phase relation, whereas for contacts on the scale of the coherence length or smaller the usual $\sinϕ$-like behavior is observed. Our results compare well with recent experimental observations.

D-Wave Superconductors near Surfaces and Interfaces: A Scattering Matrix Approach within the Quasiclassical Technique

A recently developed method [A. Shelankov and M. Ozana, Phys. Rev. B 61, 7077 (2000)] is applied to investigate d-wave superconductors in the vicinity of (rough) surfaces. While this method allows the incorporation of arbitrary interfaces into the quasiclassical technique, we discuss, as examples, diffusive surfaces and boundaries with small tilted mirrors (facets). The properties of the surface enter via the scattering matrix in the boundary condition for the quasiclassical Green's function. The diffusive surface is described by an ensemble of random scattering matrices. We find that the fluctuations of the density of states around the average are small; the zero bias conductance peak broadens with increasing disorder. The faceted surface is described in the model where the scattering matrix couples m in- and m out-trajectories (m>=2). No zero bias conductance peak is found for [100] surfaces; the relation to the model of Fogelstrom et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 281 (1997)] is discussed.
