Evidence for $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ and observation of $η_c(2S) \to p \bar{p} π^+ π^-$

A search for the decays $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ and $B^0 \rightarrow h_c K_S^0$ is performed. Evidence for the decay $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ is found; its significance is $4.8σ$. No evidence is found for $B^0 \rightarrow h_c K_S^0$. The branching fraction for $B^+ \rightarrow h_c K^+$ is measured to be $(3.7^{+1.0}_{-0.9}{}^{+0.8}_{-0.8}) \times 10^{-5}$; the upper limit for the $B^0 \rightarrow h_c K_S^0$ branching fraction is $1.4 \times 10^{-5}$ at $90\%$ C.L. In addition, a study of the $p \bar{p} π^+ π^-$ invariant mass distribution in the channel $B^+ \to (p \bar{p} π^+ π^-) K^+$ results in the first observation of the decay $η_c(2S) \to p \bar{p} π^+ π^-$ with $12.1σ$ significance. The analysis is based on the 711 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider KEKB at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance.

RF design of APEX2 two-cell continuous-wave normal conducting photoelectron gun cavity based on multi-objective genetic algorithm

High brightness, high repetition rate electron beams are key components for optimizing the performance of next generation scientific instruments, such as MHz-class X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) and Ultra-fast Electron Diffraction/Microscopy (UED/UEM). In the Advanced Photo-injector EXperiment (APEX) at Berkeley Lab, a photoelectron gun based on a 185.7 MHz normal conducting re-entrant RF cavity, has been proven to be a feasible solution to provide high brightness, high repetition rate electron beam for both XFEL and UED/UEM. Based on the success of APEX, a new electron gun system, named APEX2, has been under development to further improve the electron beam brightness. For APEX2, we have designed a new 162.5 MHz two-cell photoelectron gun and achieved a significant increase on the cathode launching field and the beam exit energy. For a fixed charge per bunch, these improvements will allow for the emittance reduction and hence an increased beam brightness. The design of APEX2 gun cavity is a complex problem with multiple design goals and restrictions, some even competing each other. For a systematic and comprehensive search for the optimized cavity geometry, we have developed and implemented a novel optimization method based on the Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA).

Evidence for the decay $B^0\to p\bar{p}π^0$

We report a search for the charmless baryonic decay $B^0\to p\bar{p}π^0$ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711~$\rm fb^{-1}$ containing $(772\pm 10)\times 10^6$ $B^0\bar{B}^0$ pairs. The data was collected by the Belle experiment running on the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to p\bar{p}π^0)= (5.0\pm1.8\pm0.6 )\times 10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The signal has a significance of 3.1 standard deviations and constitutes the first evidence for this decay mode. We also search for the intermediate two-body decays $B^{0}\toΔ^+\bar{p}$ and $B^0\to\barΔ^-p$, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction: $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to Δ^+\bar{p})+\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\barΔ^-p)<1.6\times10^{-6}$ at 90% confidence level.

Transverse momentum dependent production cross sections of charged pions, kaons and protons produced in inclusive $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

We report measurements of the production cross sections of charged pions, kaons, and protons as a function of fractional energy, the event-shape variable called thrust, and the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. These measurements access the transverse momenta created in the fragmentation process, which are of critical importance to the understanding of any transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions. The low transverse momentum part of the cross sections can be well described by Gaussians in transverse momentum as is generally assumed but the fractional-energy dependence is non-trivial and different hadron types have varying Gaussian widths. The width of these Gaussians decreases with thrust and shows an initially rising, then decreasing fractional-energy dependence. The widths for pions and kaons are comparable within uncertainties, while those for protons are significantly narrower. These single-hadron cross sections and Gaussian widths are obtained from a $558\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Search for the $B \to Y(4260) K, ~Y(4260) \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays

We report the results of a search for the $B \to Y(4260) K, ~Y(4260)\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays. This study is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711~fb$^{-1}$, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We investigate the $J/ψπ^+π^-$ invariant mass distribution in the range 4.0 to 4.6 GeV/$c^2$ using both $B^+ \to J/ψπ^+π^- K^+$ and $B^0 \to J/ψπ^+π^- K^0_S$ decays. We find excesses of events above the background levels, with a significances of 2.1 and 0.9 standard deviations for charged and neutral $B \to Y(4260) K$ decays, respectively, taking into account the systematic uncertainties. These correspond to upper limits on the product of branching fractions, ${\cal B}(B^+ \to Y(4260) K^+) \times {\cal B}(Y(4260) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) <1.4 \times 10^{-5}$ and ${\cal B}(B^0 \to Y(4260) K^0) \times {\cal B}(Y(4260) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) <1.7 \times 10^{-5}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

The JETSCAPE framework

The JETSCAPE simulation framework is an overarching computational envelope for developing complete event generators for heavy-ion collisions. It allows for modular incorporation of a wide variety of existing and future software that simulates different aspects of a heavy-ion collision. The default JETSCAPE package contains both the framework, and an entire set of indigenous and third party routines that can be used to directly compare with experimental data. In this article, we outline the algorithmic design of the JETSCAPE framework, define the interfaces and describe the default modules required to carry out full simulations of heavy-ion collisions within this package. We begin with a description of the various physics elements required to simulate an entire event in a heavy-ion collision, and distribute these within a flowchart representing the event generator and statistical routines for comparison with data. This is followed by a description of the abstract class structure, with associated members and functions required for this flowchart to work. We then define the interface that will be required for external users of JETSCAPE to incorporate their code within this framework and to modify existing elements within the default distribution. We conclude with a discussion of some of the physics output for both $p$-$p$ and $A$-$A$ collisions from the default distribution, and an outlook towards future releases. In the appendix, we discuss various architectures on which this code can be run and outline our benchmarks on similar hardware.

Jet substructure modification in a QGP from a multi-scale description of jet evolution with JETSCAPE

The modification of jet substructure in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied using JETSCAPE, a publicly available software package containing a framework for Monte Carlo event generators. Multi-stage jet evolution in JETSCAPE provides an integrated description of jet quenching by combining multiple models, with each becoming active at a different stage of the parton shower evolution. Jet substructure modification due to different aspects of jet quenching is studied using jet shape and jet fragmentation observables. Various combinations of jet energy loss models are exploed, with medium background provided by (2 + 1)-D VISHNU with TRENTo+freestreaming initial conditions. Results reported here are from simulations performed within JETSCAPE framework.

Multi-stage jet evolution through QGP using the JETSCAPE framework: inclusive jets, correlations and leading hadrons

The JETSCAPE Collaboration has recently announced the first release of the JETSCAPE package that provides a modular, flexible, and extensible Monte Carlo event generator. This innovative framework makes it possible to perform a comprehensive study of multi-stage high-energy jet evolution in the Quark-Gluon Plasma. In this work, we illustrate the performance of the event generator for different algorithmic approaches to jet energy loss, and reproduce the measurements of several jet and hadron observables as well as correlations between the hard and soft sector. We also carry out direct comparisons between different approaches to energy loss to study their sensitivity to those observables.

Measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 π^0$ decays

We report a measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 π^0$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment runnin g at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. This decay proceeds mainly via a $b\to sd\bar{d}$ "penguin" amplitude. The results are $\sin 2ϕ^{\rm eff}_1 = 0.92^{+0.27}_{-0.31}~$ (stat.) $\pm 0.11$ (syst.) and $\mathcal{A} = 0.28 \pm 0.21$ (stat.) $\pm 0.04$ (syst.), which are the most precise measurements of $CP$ violati on in this decay mode to date. The value for the $CP$-violating parameter $\sin 2ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ is consistent with that obtained using decay modes proceeding via a $b\to c\bar{c}s$ "tree" amplitude.

Search for the rare decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with improved hadronic tagging

We present the result of the search for the rare $B$ meson decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with $\ell =e,μ$. For the search the full data set recorded by the Belle experiment of $711 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies $E_γ$ larger than $1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second $B$ meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side $B$ meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side $B$ meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction $ Δ\mathcal{B} $ with $E_γ> 1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of $Δ\mathcal{B}( B^{+} \to \ell^{\, +} ν_{\ell} γ) < 3.0 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% CL and also report an upper limit on the first inverse moment of the light-cone distribution amplitude of the $B$ meson of $λ_B$ at 90% CL.

Evidence of a structure in $\bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+}$ consistent with a charged $Ξ_c(2930)^{+}$, and updated measurement of $\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ at Belle

We report evidence for the charged charmed-strange baryon $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ with a signal significance of 3.9$σ$ with systematic errors included. The charged $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ is found in its decay to $K_{S}^{0} Λ_{c}^+$ in the substructure of $\bar{B}^{0} \to K^{0}_{S} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ decays. The measured mass and width are $[2942.3 \pm 4.4 (\rm stat.) \pm 1.5(\rm syst.)]$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and $[14.8 \pm 8.8(\rm stat.) \pm 2.5(\rm syst.)]$~MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Ξ_c(2930)^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) \cal{B}(Ξ_c(2930)^{+}\to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+})=[2.37 \pm 0.51 (\rm stat.)\pm 0.31(\rm syst.)]\times 10^{-4}$. We also measure $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) = [3.99 \pm 0.76(\rm stat.) \pm 0.51(\rm syst.)] \times 10^{-4}$ with greater precision than previous experiments, and present the results of a search for the charmonium-like state $Y(4660)$ and its spin partner, $Y_η$, in the $Λ_{c}^{+}\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. No clear signals of the $Y(4660)$ or $Y_η$ are observed and the 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. These measurements are obtained from a sample of $(772\pm11)\times 10^{6} B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider.

Measurement of eta_c(1S), eta_c(2S) and non-resonant eta' pi+ pi- production via two-photon collisions

We report the measurement of gamma gamma to eta_c(1S), eta_c(2S) to eta' pi+ pi- with eta' decays to gamma rho and eta pi+ pi- using 941 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The eta_c(1S) mass and width are measured to be M = [2984.6\pm0.7 (stat.)\pm2.2 (syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and Γ= [30.8^{+2.3}_{-2.2}~(stat.) \pm 2.5~(syst.)] MeV, respectively. First observation of eta_c(2S) to eta' pi+ pi- with a significance of 5.5sigma including systematic error is obtained, and the eta_c(2S) mass is measured to be M = [3635.1\pm3.7~(stat.)\pm2.9~(syst.)] MeV/c^{2}. The products of the two-photon decay width and branching fraction (B) of decays to eta'pi+ pi- are determined to be Γ_{gamma gamma}B = [65.4\pm2.6~(stat.)\pm6.9~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(1S) and [5.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1}~(stat.)\pm1.1~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(2S). A new decay mode for the eta_c(1S) to eta'f_0(2080) with f_0(2080) to pi+ pi- is observed with a statistical significance of 20sigma. The f_0(2080) mass and width are determined to be M = [2083^{+63}_{-66}~(stat.)\pm 32~(syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and Γ= [178^{+60}_{-178}~(stat.) \pm 55~(syst.)] MeV. The cross sections for gamma gamma to eta' pi+ pi- and eta'f_{2}(1270) are measured for the first time.

Observation of $Ξ(1620)^0$ and evidence for $Ξ(1690)^0$ in $Ξ_c^+ \rightarrow Ξ^-π^+π^+$ decays

We report the first observation of the doubly-strange baryon $Ξ(1620)^0$ in its decay to $Ξ^-π^+$ via $Ξ_c^+ \rightarrow Ξ^- π^+ π^+$ decays based on a $980\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The mass and width are measured to be 1610.4 $\pm$ 6.0 (stat) $^{+5.9}_{-3.5}$ (syst)~MeV$/c^2$ and 59.9 $\pm$ 4.8 (stat) $^{+2.8}_{-3.0}$ (syst)~MeV, respectively. We obtain 4.0$σ$ evidence of the $Ξ(1690)^0$ with the same data sample. These results shed light on the structure of hyperon resonances with strangeness $S=-2$.

Measurements of isospin asymmetry and difference of direct $CP$ asymmetries in inclusive $B \to X_s γ$ decays

We report measurements of isospin asymmetry $Δ_{0-}$ and difference of direct $CP$ asymmetries $ΔA_{CP}$ between charged and neutral $B \to X_s γ$ decays. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. Using a sum-of-exclusive technique with invariant $X_s$ mass up to 2.8~GeV/$c^2$, we obtain $Δ_{0-} = \bigl[-0.48 \pm 1.49 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.97 {\rm (syst.)} \pm 1.15 {(f_{+-}/f_{00})}\bigr]$\% and $ΔA_{CP} = \bigl[+3.69 \pm 2.65 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.76{\rm (syst.)}\bigr]$\%, where the last uncertainty for $Δ_{0-}$ is due to the uncertainty on the production ratio of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value of $Δ_{0-}$ is consistent with zero, allowing us to constrain the resolved photon contribution in the $B \to X_s γ$, and improve the branching fraction prediction. The result for $ΔA_{CP}$ is consistent with the prediction of the SM. We also measure the direct $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B \to X_s γ$ decays. All the measurements are the most precise to date.

Observation of $Ξ_{c}(2930)^0$ and updated measurement of $B^{-} \to K^{-} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ at Belle

We report the first observation of the $Ξ_{c}(2930)^0$ charmed-strange baryon with a significance greater than 5$σ$. The $Ξ_{c}(2930)^0$ is found in its decay to $K^- Λ_{c}^+$ in $B^{-} \to K^{-} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ decays. The measured mass and width are $[2928.9 \pm 3.0(\rm stat.)^{+0.9}_{-12.0}(\rm syst.)]$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $[19.5 \pm 8.4(\rm stat.) ^{+5.9}_{-7.9}(\rm syst.)]$ MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is ${\cal B}(B^{-} \to Ξ_{c}(2930)^0 \barΛ_{c}^{-}) {\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(2930)^0 \to K^- Λ_{c}^{+})=[1.73 \pm 0.45(\rm stat.) \pm 0.21(\rm syst.)]\times 10^{-4}$. We also measure ${\cal B}(B^{-} \to K^{-} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) = [4.80 \pm 0.43(\rm stat.) \pm 0.60(\rm syst.)] \times 10^{-4}$ with improved precision, and search for the charmonium-like state $Y(4660)$ and its spin partner, $Y_η$, in the $Λ_{c}^{+}\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. No clear signals of the $Y(4660)$ nor its spin partner are observed and the 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. These measurements are obtained from a sample of $(772\pm11)\times 10^{6} B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider.

Insight-HXMT observations of the New Black Hole Candidate MAXI J1535-571: timing analysis

We present the X-ray timing results of the new black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1535-571 during its 2017 outburst from Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (\emph{Insight}-HXMT) observations taken from 2017 September 6 to 23. Following the definitions given by \citet{Belloni2010}, we find that the source exhibits state transitions from Low/Hard state (LHS) to Hard Intermediate state (HIMS) and eventually to Soft Intermediate state (SIMS). Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are found in the intermediate states, which suggest different types of QPOs. With the large effective area of \emph{Insight}-HXMT at high energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of the QPO amplitude and centroid frequency up to 100 keV which is rarely explored by previous satellites. We also find that the phase lag at the type-C QPOs centroid frequency is negative (soft lags) and strongly correlated with the centroid frequency. By assuming a geometrical origin of type-C QPOs, the source is consistent with being a high inclination system.

Measurements of the absolute branching fractions of $B^{+} \to X_{c\bar{c}} K^{+}$ and $B^{+} \to \bar{D}^{(\ast) 0} π^{+} $ at Belle

We present the measurement of the absolute branching fractions of $B^{+} \to X_{c\bar{c}} K^{+}$ and $B^{+} \to \bar{D}^{(\ast) 0} π^{+} $ decays, using a data sample of $772\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. Here, $X_{c\bar{c}}$ denotes $η_{c}$, $J/ψ$, $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$, $η_{c}(2S)$, $ψ(2S)$, $ψ(3770)$, $X(3872)$, and $X(3915)$. We do not observe significant signals for $X(3872)$ nor $X(3915)$, and set the 90$\%$ confidence level upper limits: ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3872) K^{+} )<2.7 \times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3915) K^{+} )<2.9 \times 10^{-4}$. These represent the most stringent upper limit for ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3872) K^{+} )$ to date and the first measurement for ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3915) K^{+} )$. The measured branching fractions for $η_{c}$ and $η_{c}(2S)$ are the most precise to date: ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to η_{c} K^{+} )=(12.3\pm0.8\pm0.7) \times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to η_{c}(2S)K^{+}) =(4.9\pm1.1\pm0.3) \times 10^{-4}$ , where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.
