Uniform asymptotic expansions for the Whittaker functions $M_{κ,μ}(z)$ and $W_{κ,μ}(z)$ with $μ$ large

Uniform asymptotic expansions are derived for Whittaker's confluent hypergeometric functions $M_{κ,μ}(z)$ and $W_{κ,μ}(z)$, as well as the numerically satisfactory companion function $W_{-κ,μ}(ze^{-πi})$. The expansions are uniformly valid for $μ\rightarrow \infty$, $0 \leq κ/μ\leq 1-δ<1$, and for $0 \leq \arg(z) \leq π$. By using appropriate connection and analytic continuation formulas these expansions can be extended to all unbounded nonzero complex $z$. The approximations come from recent asymptotic expansions involving elementary functions and Airy functions, and explicit error bounds are either provided or available.

Uniform asymptotic expansions for Lommel, Anger-Weber and Struve functions

Using a differential equation approach asymptotic expansions are rigorously obtained for Lommel, Weber, Anger-Weber and Struve functions, as well as Neumann polynomials, each of which is a solution of an inhomogeneous Bessel equation. The approximations involve Airy and Scorer functions, and are uniformly valid for large real order $ν$ and unbounded complex argument $z$. An interesting complication is the identification of the Lommel functions with the new asymptotic solutions, and in order to do so it is necessary to consider certain sectors of the complex plane, as well as introduce new forms of Lommel and Struve functions.

Asymptotic solutions of inhomogeneous differential equations having a turning point

Asymptotic solutions are derived for inhomogeneous differential equations having a large real or complex parameter and a simple turning point. They involve Scorer functions and three slowly varying analytic coefficient functions. The asymptotic approximations are uniformly valid for unbounded complex values of the argument, and are applied to inhomogeneous Airy equations having polynomial and exponential forcing terms. Error bounds are available for all approximations, including new simple ones for the well-known asymptotic expansions of Scorer functions of large complex argument.

Uniform asymptotic expansions for solutions of the parabolic cylinder and Weber equations

Asymptotic expansions are derived for solutions of the parabolic cylinder and Weber differential equations. In addition the inhomogeneous versions of the equations are considered, for the case of polynomial forcing terms. The expansions involve exponential, Airy and Scorer functions and slowly varying analytic coefficient functions involving simple coefficients. The approximations are uniformly valid for large values of the parameter and unbounded real and complex values of the argument. Explicit and readily computable error bounds are either furnished or available for all approximations.

Sharp error bounds for turning point expansions

Computable and sharp error bounds are derived for asymptotic expansions for linear differential equations having a simple turning point. The expansions involve Airy functions and slowly varying coefficient functions. The sharpness of the bounds is illustrated numerically with an application to Bessel functions of large order.

Simplified error bounds for turning point expansions

Recently, the present authors derived new asymptotic expansions for linear differential equations having a simple turning point. These involve Airy functions and slowly varying coefficient functions, and were simpler than previous approximations, in particular being computable to a high degree of accuracy. Here we present explicit error bounds for these expansions which only involve elementary functions, and thereby provide a simplification of the bounds associated with the classical expansions of F. Fundamental Solutions and Gegenbauer Expansions of Helmholtz Operators in Riemannian Spaces of Constant Curvature

We perform global and local analysis of oscillatory and damped spherically symmetric fundamental solutions for Helmholtz operators $\big({-}Δ\pmβ^2\big)$ in $d$-dimensional, $R$-radius hyperbolic ${\mathbf H}_R^d$ and hyperspherical ${\mathbf S}_R^d$ geometry, which represent Riemannian manifolds with positive constant and negative constant sectional curvature respectively. In particular, we compute closed-form expressions for fundamental solutions of $\big({-}Δ\pm β^2\big)$ on ${\mathbf H}_R^d$, $\big({-}Δ+β^2\big)$ on ${\mathbf S}_R^d$, and present two candidate fundamental solutions for $\big({-}Δ-β^2\big)$ on ${\mathbf S}_R^d$. Flat-space limits, with their corresponding asymptotic representations, are used to restrict proportionality constants for these fundamental solutions. In order to accomplish this, we summarize and derive new large degree asymptotics for associated Legendre and Ferrers functions of the first and second kind. Furthermore, we prove that our fundamental solutions on the hyperboloid are unique due to their decay at infinity. To derive Gegenbauer polynomial expansions of our fundamental solutions for Helmholtz operators on hyperspheres and hyperboloids, we derive a collection of infinite series addition theorems for Ferrers and associated Legendre functions which are generalizations and extensions of the addition theorem for Gegenbauer polynomials. Using these addition theorems, in geodesic polar coordinates for dimensions greater than or equal to three, we compute Gegenbauer polynomial expansions for these fundamental solutions, and azimuthal Fourier expansions in two-dimensions.

Liouville-Green expansions of exponential form, with an application to modified Bessel functions

Linear second order differential equations of the form $d^{2}w/dz^{2}-\left \{ {u^{2}f\left( u,z\right) +g\left( z\right) }\right\} w=0$ are studied, where $\left| u\right| \rightarrow \infty $ and $z$ lies in a complex bounded or unbounded domain $\mathbf{D}$. If $f\left( u,z\right) $ and $g\left( z\right) $ are meromorphic in $\mathbf{D}$, and $f\left(u,z\right) $ has no zeros, the classical Liouville-Green/WKBJ approximation provides asymptotic expansions involving the exponential function. The coefficients in these expansions either multiply the exponential, or in an alternative form appear in the exponent. The latter case has applications to the simplification of turning point expansions as well as certain quantum mechanic problems, and new computable error bounds are derived. It is shown how these bounds can be sharpened to provide realistic error estimates, and this is illustrated by an application to modified Bessel functions of complex argument and large positive order. Explicit computable error bounds are also derived for asymptotic expansions for particular solutions of the nonhomogeneous equations of the form $d^{2}w/dz^{2}-\left\{ {u^{2}f\left(z\right) +g\left( z\right) }\right\} w=p\left( z\right)$.

Uniform asymptotic expansions for Laguerre polynomials and related confluent hypergeometric functions

Uniform asymptotic expansions involving exponential and Airy functions are obtained for Laguerre polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x)$, as well as complementary confluent hypergeometric functions. The expansions are valid for $n$ large and $α$ small or large, uniformly for unbounded real and complex values of $x$. The new expansions extend the range of computability of $L_n^{(α)}(x)$ compared to previous expansions, in particular with respect to higher terms and large values of $α$. Numerical evidence of their accuracy for real and complex values of $x$ is provided.

Conical: an extended module for computing a numerically satisfactory pair of solutions of the differential equation for conical functions

Conical functions appear in a large number of applications in physics and engineering. In this paper we describe an extension of our module CONICAL for the computation of conical functions. Specifically, the module includes now a routine for computing the function ${\rm R}^{m}_{-\frac{1}{2}+iτ}(x)$, a real-valued numerically satisfactory companion of the function ${\rm P}^m_{-\tfrac12+iτ}(x)$ for $x>1$. In this way, a natural basis for solving Dirichlet problems bounded by conical domains is provided.

Asymptotics of Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions

Uniform asymptotic approximations are obtained for the prolate spheroidal wave functions, in the high-frequency case. The results are obtained by an application of certain existing asymptotic solutions of differential equations, and involve elementary, Bessel, and parabolic cylinder functions. An asymptotic relationship between the prolate spheroidal equation separation parameter and the other parameters is also obtained, and error bounds are available for all approximations

Computation of asymptotic expansions of turning point problems via Cauchy's integral formula: Bessel functions

Linear second order differential equations having a large real parameter and turning point in the complex plane are considered. Classical asymptotic expansions for solutions involve the Airy function and its derivative, along with two infinite series, the coefficients of which are usually difficult to compute. By considering the series as asymptotic expansions for two explicitly defined analytic functions, Cauchy's integral formula is employed to compute the coefficient functions to high order of accuracy. The method employs a certain exponential form of Liouville-Green expansions for solutions of the differential equation, as well as for the Airy function. We illustrate the use of the method with the high accuracy computation of Airy-type expansions of Bessel functions of complex argument.

On the order derivatives of Bessel functions

The derivatives with respect to order ν for the Bessel functions of argument x (real or complex) are studied. Representations are derived in terms of integrals that involve the products pairs of Bessel functions, and in turn series expansions are obtained for these integrals. From the new integral representations, asymptotic approximations involving Airy functions are constructed for the order derivatives, for ν large and uniformly valid for unbounded positive real x.

Computation of a numerically satisfactory pair of solutions of the differential equation for conical functions of non-negative integer orders

We consider the problem of computing satisfactory pairs of solutions of the differential equation for Legendre functions of non-negative integer order $μ$ and degree $-\frac12+iτ$, where $τ$ is a non-negative real parameter. Solutions of this equation are the conical functions ${\rm{P}}^μ_{-\frac12+iτ}(x)$ and ${Q}^μ_{-\frac12+iτ}(x)$, $x>-1$. An algorithm for computing a numerically satisfactory pair of solutions is already available when $-1 1$, the function $\Re\left\{e^{-iπμ} {Q}^μ_{-\frac{1}{2}+iτ}(x) \right\}$. The proposed algorithm allows the computation of the function on a large parameter domain without requiring the use of extended precision arithmetic.
