Phase Diagram of Coupled Ladders

The 2-leg t-J ladder forms a spin liquid at half-filling which evolves to a Luther-Emery liquid upon doping. Our aim is to obtain a complete phase diagram for isotropic coupling (i.e. rungs and legs equal) as a function of electron density n and the ratio J/t (>0). Two known limiting cases are: n<1/2 which is a single band Luttinger liquid and small hole doping for J/t close to 0 which is a Nagaoka ferromagnet. Using Lanczos techniques we examine the region between the Nagaoka and Luther-Emery phases for 1>n>1/2. We find evidences for gapless behavior in both spin and charge channels for J/t<0.3 consistent with Luttinger liquids in both bonding and anti-bonding bands (i.e., C2S2). This proposal is based on the behavior of spin and charge correlation functions. For example the hole-hole correlation function which displays hole pairing at larger J/t, shows hole-hole repulsion in this region. As a further test, we examined the dependence of the energy on a relative phase shift between bonding and antibonding bands. For J/t < 0.3 this is very weak, indicating a lack of pairing between these channels.

Electronic Structure of Ladder Cuprates

We study the electronic structure of the ladder compounds (SrCa)CuO 14-24-41 and SrCuO 123. LDA calculations for both give similar Cu 3d-bands near the Fermi energy. The hopping parameters estimated by fitting LDA energy bands show a strong anisotropy between the t_perp t_par intra-ladder hopping and small inter-ladder hopping. A downfolding method shows that this anisotropy arises from the ladder structure. The conductivity perpendicular to the ladders is computed assuming incoherent tunneling giving a value close to experiment.

Magnetic imaging of the paramagnetic Meissner effect in the granular high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox

We have imaged the spatial distribution of magnetic flux on a granular sample of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox using a scanning SQUID microscope. Our results establish the presence of spontaneous orbital magnetic moments which were suggested to be the origin of the paramagnetic response of these materials. The signature of the orbital magnetic moments is a rather broad distribution of local magnetic fields at the surface of the sample. A simple model for the distribution is presented.

Lightly Doped t-J Three-Leg Ladders - an Analog for the Underdoped Cuprates

The three-leg ladder has one odd-parity and two even-parity channels. At low doping these behave quite differently. Numerical calculations for a t-J model show that the initial phase upon hole doping has two components - a conducting Luttinger liquid in the odd-parity channel, coexisting with an insulating (i.e. undoped) spin liquid phase in the even-parity channels. This phase has a partially truncated Fermi surface and violates the Luttinger theorem. This coexistence of conducting fermionic and insulating paired bosonic degrees of freedom is similar to the recent proposal of Geshkenbein, Ioffe, and Larkin for the underdoped spin-gap normal phase of the cuprates. A mean field approximation is derived which has many similarities to the numerical results. One difference however is an induced hole pairing in the odd-parity channel at arbitrary small dopings, similar to that proposed by Geshkenbein, Ioffe, and Larkin for the two-dimensional case. At higher dopings, we propose that a quantum phase transition will occur as holes enter the even-parity channels, resulting in a Luther-Emery liquid with hole pairing with essentially d-wave character. In the mean field approximation a crossover occurs which we interpret as a reflection of this quantum phase transition deduced from the numerical results.

Extended Gapless Regions in Disordered d_{x^2-y^2}-Wave Superconductors

A generalization of the Abrikosov-Gorkov equations for non-magnetic impurities in unconventional superconductors is proposed, including higher harmonics in the expansion of the momentum dependent gap function and a momentum dependent impurity scattering potential. This model is treated within a self-consistent calculation to obtain the electronic density of states, the optical conductivity, and the gap function in a two-dimensional d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor. It is argued that momentum dependent scattering from the impurities may lead to extended gapless regions in the gap function centered around the nodes of the pure d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor. The associated enhancement of the residual density of states may be responsible for the rapid decrease of T_c and the increase of the London penetration depth with hole doping observed in overdoped cuprate superconductors.

Orbital dependent superconductivity in Sr_2RuO_4

We show that for superconducting Sr_2RuO_4 any unconventional pairing in the part of the Fermi surface with Ru 4d-xy orbital character is weakly coupled to that with Ru 4d-xz, 4d-yz orbital character. This naturally gives rise to two disparate energy scales in the superconducting state which leads to novel low temperature properties in a variety of thermodynamic and transport properties and which would also account for the large residual density of states seen in specific heat and NQR measurements.

Dynamical Properties of an Antiferromagnet near the Quantum Critical Point: Application to LaCuO_2.5

For a system of two-chain spin ladders, the ground state for weak interladder coupling is the spin-liquid state of the isolated ladder, but is an ordered antiferromagnet (AF) for sufficiently large interactions. We generalize the bond-operator mean-field theory to describe both regimes, and to focus on the transition between them. In the AF phase near the quantum critical point (QCP) we find both spin waves and a low-lying but massive amplitude mode which is absent in a conventional AF. The static susceptibility has the form $χ(T) = χ_0 + a T^2$, with $χ_0$ small for a system near criticality. We consider the dynamical properties to examine novel features due to the presence of the amplitude mode, and compute the dynamic structure factor. LaCuO$_{2.5}$ is thought to be such an unconventional AF, whose ordered phase is located very close to the QCP of the transition to the spin liquid. From the Néel temperature we deduce the interladder coupling, the small ordered moment and the gap in the amplitude mode. The dynamical properties unique to near-critical AFs are expected to be observable in LaCuO$_{2.5}$.

Singlet and triplet doped-hole configurations in La_2Cu_0.5Li_0.5O_4

The ordered alloy La_2Li_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}O_4 is found to be a band insulator in local density approximation (LDA) calculations with the unoccupied conduction band having predominantly d_{x^2-y^2}-symmetry and substantial weight in O 2p-orbitals. This is equivalent to a predominant local singlet configuration d^9L or a low spin Cu^{3+}-ion with both holes in orbits having d_{x^2-y^2}-symmetry, i.e. Zhang-Rice singlets. A fairly modest reduction of the apical Cu-O bondlength is sufficient to stabilize a high spin triplet Cu^{3+}-ionic configuration with holes in both d_{x^2-y^2} and d_{3z^2-r^2} orbits in LDA + U calculations. This leads us to identify the low energy triplet excitation found in NQR studies by Yoshinari et al. as a local high spin Cu^{3+} -ionic configuration accompanied by a substantial reduction of the apical Cu-O separation, i.e. a anti-Jahn-Teller triplet polaron.

Electronic Structure of Lanthanum Hydrides with Switchable Optical Properties

Recent dramatic changes in the optical properties of LaH_{2+x} and YH_{2+x} films discovered by Huiberts et al. suggest their electronic structure is described best by a local model. Electron correlation is important in H^- -centers and in explaining the transparent insulating behavior of LaH_3. The metal-insulator transition at $x\sim 0.8$ takes place in a band of highly localized states centered on the $H$-vacancies in the LaH_3 structure.

Spin and Charge Texture around In-Plane Charge Centers in the CuO_2 planes

Recent experiments on La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4 show that although the doped holes remain localized near the substitutional Li impurities, magnetic order is rapidly suppressed. An examination of the spin texture around a bound hole in a CuO_2 plane shows that the formation of a skyrmion is favored in a wide range of parameters, as was previously proposed in the context of Sr doping. The spin texture may be observable by elastic diffuse neutron scattering, and may also have a considerable effect on NMR lineshapes.

Low-Energy Properties of Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Ladders with an Odd Number of Legs

An effective low-energy description for multi-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders with an odd number of legs is proposed. Using a newly developed Monte Carlo loop algorithm and exact diagonalization techniques, the uniform and staggered magnetic susceptibility and the entropy are calculated for ladders with 1, 3, and 5 legs. These systems show a low-temperature scaling behavior similar to spin-1/2 chains with longer ranged unfrustrated exchange interactions. The spinon velocity does not change as the number of legs increases, but the energy scale parameter decreases markedly.

Electronic and Magnetic Structure of LaCuO$_{2.5}$

The recently-discovered ``ladder'' compound LaCuO$_{2.5}$ has been found to admit hole doping without altering its structure of coupled copper oxide ladders. While susceptibility measurements on the parent compound suggest a spin gap and a spin-liquid state, NMR results indicate magnetic order at low temperatures. These seemingly contradictory results may be reconciled if in fact the magnetic state is near the crossover from spin liquid to antiferromagnet, and we investigate this possibility. From a tight-binding fit to the valence LDA bandstructure, we deduce that the strength of the interladder hopping term is approximately half that of intraladder hopping, showing that the material is three-dimensional in character. A mean-field treatment of the insulating magnetic state gives a spin-liquid phase whose spin gap decreases with increasing interladder coupling, vanishing (signalling a transition to the ordered phase) at a value somewhat below that obtained for LaCuO$_{2.5}$. The introduction of an on-site repulsion term, $U$, to the band scheme causes a transition to an antiferromagnetic insulator for rather small but finite values of $U$, reflecting the predominance of (one-dimensional) ladder behavior, and an absence of any special nesting features.

Properties of lightly doped t-J two-leg ladders

We have numerically investigated the doped t-J ladder using exact diagonalization. We have studied both the limit of strong inter-chain coupling and isotropic coupling. The ladder scales to the Luther-Emery liquid regime in the strong inter-chain coupling limit. In this strong coupling limit there is a simple picture of the excitation spectrum that can be continued to explain the behavior at isotropic coupling. At J=0 we have indications of a ferromagnetic ground state. At a large $J/t$ the ladder is phase separated into holes and a Heisenberg ladder. At intermediate coupling the ground state shows hole pairing with a modified d-wave symmetry. The excitation spectrum separates into a limited number of quasiparticles which carry charge $+|e|$ and spin ${1\over 2}$ and a triplet magnon mode. At half-filling the former vanish but the latter evolves continuously into the magnon band of the spin liquid. At low doping the quasiparticles form a dilute Fermi gas with a strong attraction but simultaneously the Fermi wave vector, as would be measured in photoemission, is large. The dynamical structure factors are calculated and are found to be very similar to calculations on 2D clusters.

Surprises on the Way from 1D to 2D Quantum Magnets: the Novel Ladder Materials

One way of making the transition between the quasi-long range order in a chain of S=1/2 spins coupled antiferromagnetically and the true long range order that occurs in a plane, is by assembling chains to make ladders of increasing width. Surprisingly this crossover between one and two dimensions is not at all smooth. Ladders with an even number of legs have purely short range magnetic order and a finite energy gap to all magnetic excitations. Predictions of this novel groundstate have now been verified experimentally. Holes doped into these ladders are predicted to pair, and possibly superconduct.

Resistivity as a function of temperature for models with hot spots on the Fermi surface.

We calculate the resistivity $ρ$ as a function of temperature $T$ for two models currently discussed in connection with high temperature superconductivity: nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids and models with van Hove singularities on the Fermi surface. The resistivity is calculated semiclassicaly by making use of a Boltzmann equation which is formulated as a variational problem. For the model of nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids we construct a better variational solution compared to the standard one and we find a new energy scale for the crossover to the $ρ\propto T^2$ behavior at low temperatures. This energy scale is finite even when the spin-fluctuations are assumed to be critical. The effect of additional impurity scattering is discussed. For the model with van Hove singularities a standard ansatz for the Boltzmann equation is sufficient to show that although the quasiparticle lifetime is anomalously short, the resistivity $ρ\propto T^2\ln(1/T)$.

Exciton condensate in semiconductor quantum well structures.

We propose that the exciton condensate may form in a well-controlled way in appropriately arranged semiconductor quantum well structures. The mean-field theory of Keldysh and Kopaev, exact in both the high density and the low density limits, is solved numerically to illustrate our proposal. The electron-hole pairing gap and the excitation spectrum of the exciton condensate are obtained. The energy scales of the condensate are substantial at higher densities. We discuss how such densities could be achieved experimentally by generating an effective pressure.
