A Multi-Level Parallel Pipeline for SPHERE-3 Detector Simulation: From EAS Generation to Image Approximation

Optimization of the SPHERE-3 detector configuration, designed to study the mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range 1--1000 PeV by registering Cherenkov light reflected from the snow surface, requires simulation of a large number of extensive air shower events. A software suite with a multi-step computational pipeline is presented: shower generation in CORSIKA, decoding and cloning of events (C++/OpenMP), ray-tracing of optical photons through the detector model (Geant4 MT), and approximation of images by a lateral distribution function (Python/multiprocessing, iminuit). The key property of the problem is its natural atomicity: each event is processed independently at all stages, which provides linear scaling under parallel computation. Thread safety is achieved by architectural means -- shared data are read-only, mutable state is isolated per-worker -- without the use of locks on hot paths.

Parallel Version of CORSIKA Code with Cherenkov Option for SPHERE-3 Project

We use Lomonosov-2 supercomputing facility for the generation of extensive air shower events with Cherenkov light which is a rather time consuming procedure. At primary energies slightly below 100 PeV a substantial part of events are killed before reaching their end while exceeding the queue time limit. The fact compelled us to develop a multithread version of the code. We report here the main features of our development as well as some evidence of its efficiency.

Estimation of the capabilities of the SPHERE-3 Cherenkov telescope for determining the parameters of the primary cosmic particle

New results of modeling the operation of the new SPHERE-3 Cherenkov telescope are presented. The telescope will be able to detect cosmic particles by direct and reflected Cherenkov light of the extensive air showers (EAS). Dual detection improves the accuracy of determining the parameters of the primary particle. The study is based on the data bank of distributions of the EAS Cherenkov light obtained on the Lomonosov-2 supercomputer. The accuracy of determining the energy and type of the primary particle from the reflected and direct flux of Cherenkov light is estimated.

The project of a ground-based wide-angle EAS Cherenkov light imaging detector for PCR mass composition study in the 1-1000 PeV energy range

This report presents a draft of a new detector designed to determine the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays based on the characteristics of the angular distribution of Cherenkov light from EAS. The installation, consisting of several such detectors, will be able to register individual EAS events in the energy range from 1 to 1000 PeV with high angular resolution of up to 0.2$^\circ$. The proposed detector's distinctive feature is its simple design and wide viewing angle of above $\pm30^\circ$.

Software Suite for Modeling Cherenkov Images of Extensive Air Showers in the SPHERE-3 Detector

The study of cosmic rays in the energy range from 1 to 1000 PeV is crucial for understanding their origins and propagation paths. As part of this research, a new SPHERE-3 installation is being developed, featuring enhanced light sensitivity and optical resolution, based on the experience gained with the balloon-borne SPHERE-2 installation. This report describes a computational complex designed for simulating the formation of Cherenkov light on the detector grid of the SPHERE-3 telescope.

SPHERE-3: tackling the problem of primary cosmic ray mass composition with a new approach

A new Cherenkov telescope of the SPHERE type is under development. Its main goal is to promote the solution of the problem of the primary cosmic ray mass composition at ultra high energies (1--100 PeV) using a newly developed technique of the primary mass assignment to EAS event on event-by-event basis. The telescope will carry out measurements of both the Cherenkov light reflected from the snow surface as well as the direct one. Sensitivity of the direct Cherenkov images' shapes to the primary mass is demonstrated.

Application of convolutional neural networks for extensive air shower separation in the SPHERE-3 experiment

A new SPHERE-3 telescope is being developed for cosmic rays spectrum and mass composition studies in the 5--1000 PeV energy range. Registration of extensive air showers using reflected Cherenkov light method applied in the SPHERE detector series requires a good trigger system for accurate separation of events from the background produced by starlight and airglow photons reflected from the snow. Here we present the results of convolutional networks application for the classification of images obtained from Monte Carlo simulation of the detector. Detector response simulations include photons tracing through the optical system, silicon photomultiplier operation and electronics response and digitization process. The results are compared to the SPHERE-2 trigger system performance.

Directional Sensitivity of the NEWSdm Experiment to Cosmic Ray Boosted Dark Matter

We present a study of a directional search for Dark Matter boosted forward when scattered by cosmic-ray nuclei, using a module of the NEWSdm experiment. The boosted Dark Matter flux at the edge of the Earth's atmosphere is expected to be pointing to the Galactic Center, with a flux 15 to 20 times larger than in the transverse direction. The module of the NEWSdm experiment consists of a 10 kg stack of Nano Imaging Trackers, i.e.~newly developed nuclear emulsions with AgBr crystal sizes down to a few tens of nanometers. The module is installed on an equatorial telescope. The relatively long recoil tracks induced by boosted Dark Matter, combined with the nanometric granularity of the emulsion, result in an extremely low background. This makes an installation at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory, both on the surface and underground, viable. A comparison between the two locations is made. The angular distribution of nuclear recoils induced by boosted Dark Matter in the emulsion films at the surface laboratory is expected to show an excess with a factor of 3.5 in the direction of the Galactic Center. This excess allows for a Dark Matter search with directional sensitivity. The surface laboratory configuration prevents the deterioration of the signal in the rock overburden and it emerges as the most powerful approach for a directional observation of boosted Dark Matter with high sensitivity. We show that, with this approach, a 10 kg module of the NEWSdm experiment exposed for one year at the Gran Sasso surface laboratory can probe Dark Matter masses between 1 keV/c$^2$ and 1 GeV/c$^2$ and cross-section values down to $10^{-30}$~cm$^2$ with a directional sensitive search.

EAS observation conditions in the SPHERE-2 balloon experiment

The SPHERE project studies primary cosmic rays by detection of the Cherenkov light of extensive air showers reflected from the snowy surface of the earth. Measurements with the aerial-based detector SPHERE-2 were performed in 2011-2013. The detector was lifted by the balloon at altitudes up to 900 m above snowed surface of Lake Baikal, Russia. The results of the experiment are summarized now in a series of papers that opens with this article. An overview of the SPHERE-2 detector telemetry monitoring systems is presented along with the analysis of the measurements conditions including atmosphere profile. The analysis of the detector state and environment atmosphere conditions monitoring provided various cross-checks of detector calibration, positioning and performance.

The SPHERE-2 detector for observation of extensive air showers in 1 PeV -- 1 EeV energy range

The SPHERE-2 balloon-borne detector designed for extensive air shower (EAS) observations using EAS optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (``Cherenkov light''), reflected from the snow-covered surface of Lake Baikal is described. We briefly discuss the concept behind the reflected Cherenkov light method, characterize the conditions at the experimental site and overview the construction of the tethered balloon used to lift the SPHERE-2 telescope above the surface. This paper is mainly dedicated to a detailed technical description of the detector, including its optical system, sensitive elements, electronics, and data acquisition system (DAQ). The results of some laboratory and field tests of the optical system are presented.

Spatial and temporal structure of EAS reflected Cherenkov light signal

A compact device lifted over the ground surface might be used to observe optical radiation of extensive air showers (EAS). Here we consider spatial and temporal characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation ("Cherenkov light") reflected from the snow surface of Lake Baikal, as registered by the SPHERE-2 detector. We perform detailed full direct Monte Carlo simulations of EAS development and present a dedicated highly modular code intended for detector response simulations. Detector response properties are illustrated by example of several model EAS events. The instrumental acceptance of the SPHERE-2 detector was calculated for a range of observation conditions. We introduce the concept of "composite model quantities", calculated for detector responses averaged over photoelectron count fluctuations, but retaining EAS development fluctuations. The distortions of EAS Cherenkov light lateral distribution function (LDF) introduced by the SPHERE-2 telescope are understood by comparing composite model LDF with the corresponding function as would be recorded by an ideal detector situated at the ground surface. We show that the uncertainty of snow optical properties does not change our conclusions, and, moreover, that the expected performance of the SPHERE experiment in the task of cosmic ray mass composition study in the energy region $\sim$10 PeV is comparable with other contemporary experiments. Finally, we compare the reflected Cherenkov light method with other experimental techniques and briefly discuss its prospects.

Constraints on the energy spectra of charged particles predicted in some model interactions of hadrons with help of the atmospheric muon flux

It has been shown that muon flux intensities calculated in terms of the EPOS LHC and EPOS 1.99 models at the energy of 10^4 GeV exceed the data of the classical experiments L3+Cosmic, MACRO and LVD on the spectra of atmospheric muons by a factor of 1.9 and below these data at the same energy by a factor of 1.8 in case of the QGSJET II-03 model. It has been concluded that these tested models overestimate (underestimate in case of QGSJET II-03 model) the production of secondary particles with the highest energies in interactions of hadrons by a factor of ~1.5. The LHCf and TOTEM accelerator experiments show also this type of disagreements with these model predictions at highest energies of secondary particles.

Constrains of hadronic interaction models from the cosmic muon observations

A simple method of the vertical muon energy spectrum simulations have been suggested. These calculations have been carried out in terms of various models of hadronic interactions. The most energetic $ π^\pm $-mesons and K$^\pm $-mesons produced in hadron interactions contribute mainly in to this energy spectrum of muons due to the very steep energy spectrum of the primary particles. So, some constraints on the hadronic interaction models may be set from a comparison of calculated results with the cosmic data on the vertical muon energy spectrum. This comparison showed that the most energetic secondary particles production is too high in case of the QGSJET II-04 model and rather low in case of the QGSJET II-03 model. These conclusion have been supported by the LHC data.

Event-by-event study of CR composition with the SPHERE experiment using the 2013 data

We present an event-by-event study of cosmic ray (CR) composition with the reflected Cherenkov light method. The fraction of CR light component above 5 PeV was reconstructed using the 2013 run data of the SPHERE experiment which observed optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers, reflected from snow surface of Lake Baikal. Additionally, we discuss a possibility to improve the elemental groups separability by means of multidimensional criteria.

Results on the primary CR spectrum and composition reconstructed with the SPHERE-2 detector

First preliminary results of the balloon-borne experiment SPHERE-2 on the all-nuclei primary cosmic rays (PCR) spectrum and primary composition are presented. The primary spectrum in the energy range $10^{16}$--$5\cdot10^{17}$ eV was reconstructed using characteristics of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation of extensive air showers (EAS), reflected from a snow surface. Several sources of systematic uncertainties of the spectrum were analysed. A method for separation of the primary nuclei' groups based on the lateral distribution function' (LDF) steepness parameter is presented. Preliminary estimate of the mean light nuclei' fraction $f_{30-150}$ at energies $3\cdot10^{16}$--$1.5\cdot10^{17}$ eV was performed and yielded $f_{30-150}$= (21$\pm$11)%.
