Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive $^{222}$Ra and $^{228}$Ra Beams

There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of $E$3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing $^{222}$Ra as pear-shaped with stable octupole deformation, while $^{228}$Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator.

Description of shape coexistence in $^{96}$Zr based on the collective quadrupole Bohr Hamiltonian

Experimental data on $^{96}$Zr indicate coexisting spherical and deformed structures with small mixing amplitudes. We investigate the properties of the low-lying collective states of $^{96}$Zr based on the collective quadrupole Bohr Hamiltonian. The $β$-dependent collective potential having two minima -- spherical and deformed, is fixed so to describe experimental data in the best way.Good agreement with the experimental data on the excitation energies, $B(E2)$ and $B(M1)$ reduced transition probabilities is obtained. It is shown that the low-energy structure of $^{96}$Zr can be reproduced in a satisfactory way in the geometrical model with a potential function supporting shape coexistence. However, the excitation energy of the $2^+_2$ state can be reproduced only if the rotation inertia coefficient is taken five times smaller then the vibrational one in the region of the deformed well. It is shown also that shell effects are important for the description of the $B(M1;2^+_2 \rightarrow 2^+_1)$ value. An indication on the influence of the pairing vibrational mode on the $ρ^2 (0^+_2 \rightarrow 0^+_1)$ value is obtained.

High-resolution $(p,t)$ study of low-spin states in $^{240}$Pu: Octupole excitations, $α$ clustering, and other structure features

A high-resolution $(p,t)$ experiment at $E_{p}$= 24 MeV was performed to populate low-spin states in the actinide nucleus ${}^{240}$Pu. The Q3D magnetic spectrograph of the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory (MLL) in Munich (Germany) was used to identify the ejected tritons via $dE/E$ particle identification with its focal-plane detection system. Angular distributions were measured at nine different Q3D angles to assign spin and parity to the excited states based on a comparison with coupled-channels DWBA calculations. In total, 209 states have been excited in $^{240}$Pu up to an excitation energy of 3 MeV. Many previously known states have also been observed and their spin-parity assignments were confirmed. However, many of the populated states have been seen for the first time. The low-spin one-octupole phonon excitations, i.e. $K^π = 0^-,1^-,2^-,3^-$, could be observed and a new candidate for the $K = 3$ projection is proposed. Furthermore, the double-octupole or $α$-cluster structure of the $0^+_2$ state in $^{240}$Pu has been studied in more detail. It is shown that the $0^+_2$ state in $^{230}$Th has a distinctly different structure. In addition, strongly excited $1^-$ states have been observed at 1.5\,MeV and 1.8\,MeV in $^{240}$Pu. The present study suggests that similar states might be observed in $^{230}$Th. At least two different and distinct structures for $J^π = 0^+$ states are present in the actinides. These are pairing states and states with enhanced octupole correlations. We have shown that it is crucial to consider negative-parity single-particle states being admixed to some $K^π = 0^+_2$ rotational bands to understand the $α$-decay hindrance factors and enhanced $E1$-decay rates. Based on our analysis, we have identified the double-octupole or $α$-cluster $K^π = 0^+$ candidates from $^{224}$Ra to $^{240}$Pu.

Analytical description of the excited state phase transition to octupole deformed shape in alternating parity bands

Angular momentum dependences of the parity splitting and electric dipole transitions in the alternating parity bands of heavy nuclei have been analyzed. It is shown that these dependences can be treated in a universal way with a single parameter of critical angular momentum, which characterizes phase transition from octupole vibrations to the stable octupole deformation. Using the simple but useful model of axially-symmetric reflection-asymmetric mode, the analytical expression for the parity splitting and electric dipole transitional moment have been obtained. The results obtained are in a good agreement with the experimental data for various isotopes of Ra, Th, U, and Pu.

Multiple reflection-asymmetric type band structures in $^{220}Th$ and dinuclear model

The negative parity bands in $^{220}$Th are analyzed within the dinuclear system model which was previously used for describing the alternating-parity bands in deformed actinides. The model is based on the assumption that cluster type shapes are produced by the motion of nuclear system in the mass-asymmetry coordinate. To describe the reflection-asymmetric collective modes characterized by nonzero values of $K$, the intrinsic excitations of clusters are taken into account. The angular momentum dependence of the parity splitting and the staggering behavior of the $B(E1)/B(E2)$ ratios as functions of angular momentum are explained.

Cluster Interpretation of Properties of Alternating Parity Bands in Heavy Nuclei

The properties of the states of the alternating parity bands in actinides, Ba, Ce and Nd isotopes are analyzed within a cluster model. The model is based on the assumption that cluster type shapes are produced by the collective motion of the nuclear system in the mass asymmetry coordinate. The calculated spin dependences of the parity splitting and of the electric multipole transition moments are in agreement with the experimental data.

Relationship between dinuclear systems and nuclei in highly deformed states

Potential energies, moments of inertia, quadrupole and octupole moments of dinuclear systems are compared with the corresponding quantities of strongly deformed nuclei. As dinuclear system we denote two touching nuclei (clusters). It is found that the hyperdeformed states of nuclei are close to those of nearly symmetric dinuclear systems, whereas the superdeformed states are considered as states of asymmetric dinuclear systems. The superdeformed and hyperdeformed states constructed from two touching clusters have large octupole deformations. The experimental measurement of octupole deformation of the highly deformed nuclei can answer whether these nuclei have cluster configurations as described by the dinuclear model.

Towards exotic nuclei via binary reaction mechanism

Assuming a binary reaction mechanism, the yield of isotopes near the heaviest $N=Z$ neutron-deficit nucleus $^{100}$Sn is studied with a microscopic transport model. The large influence of nuclear shell structure and isotope composition of the colliding nuclei on the production of exotic nuclei is demonstrated. It is shown that the reaction $^{54}$Fe+$^{106}$Cd seems to be most favourable for producing primary exotic Sn isotopes which may survive if the excitation energy in the entrance reaction channel is less than about 100 MeV. In the case of large differences in the charge (mass) numbers between entrance and exit channels the light fragment yield is essentially fed from the decay of excited primary heavier fragments. The existence of optimal energies for the production of some oxygen isotopes in the binary mechanism is demonstrated for the $^{32}$S+$^{197}$Au reaction.
