Non-local Control of the Kondo Effect in a Double Quantum Dot-Quantum Wire Coupled System

We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a double quantum dot-quantum wire coupled device and demonstrated non-local control of the Kondo effect in one dot by manipulating the electronic spin states of the other. We discuss the modulation of the local density of states in the wire region due to the Fano-Kondo antiresonance, and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) exchange interaction as the mechanisms responsible for the observed features.

Properties of hadron and quark matter studied with a molecular dynamics

We study the hadron-quark phase transition in a molecular dynamics (MD) of quark degrees of freedom. The hadron state at low density and temperature, and the deconfined quark state at high density and temperature are observed in our model. We investigate the equations of state and draw the phase-diagram at wide baryon density and temperature range. We also discuss the transport property, e.g. viscosity, of $q\bar{q}$ matter. It is found that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density is less than one for quark matter.

Photoproduction of $η$-mesons off C and Cu nuclei for photon energies below 1.1 GeV

The $η$-meson photoproduction cross sections have been measured on the C and Cu targets for the photon energies between 600 and 1100 MeV to investigate the behavior of the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance in a nucleus. The excitation functions of the cross section as well as the angular and momentum distributions of $η$-mesons are in quantitative agreement with the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) model calculations in which the $η$-meson emission processes other than the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance are also incorporated as proposed in the $η$-MAID model. It is shown that the excitation of the $D_{15}$(1675) resonance might play an important role for $E_γ>900$ MeV.

A Test Facility for the International Linear Collider at SLAC End Station A, for Prototypes of Beam Delivery and IR Components

The SLAC Linac can deliver damped bunches with ILC parameters for bunch charge and bunch length to End Station A. A 10Hz beam at 28.5 GeV energy can be delivered there, parasitic with PEP-II operation. We plan to use this facility to test prototype components of the Beam Delivery System and Interaction Region. We discuss our plans for this ILC Test Facility and preparations for carrying out experiments related to collimator wakefields and energy spectrometers. We also plan an interaction region mockup to investigate effects from backgrounds and beam-induced electromagnetic interference.

Origin of magnetic field in compact stars and magnetic properties of quark matter

Microscopic origin of the magnetic field observed in compact stars is studied in quark matter. Spontaneous spin polarization appears in high-density region due to the Fock exchange term. On the other hand, quark matter becomes unstable to form spin density wave in the moderate density region, where restoration of chiral symmetry plays an important role. Coexistence of the magnetism and color superconductivity is briefly discussed.

Strain-Compensated AlInGaAs-GaAsP Superlattices for Highly-Polarized Electron Emission

Spin-polarized electron emission from the first superlattice photocathodes developed with strain compensation is investigated. An opposite strain in the quantum well and barrier layers is complished using an InAlGaAs/GaAsP superlattice structure. The measured values of maximum polarization and quantum yield for the structure with a 0.18 um-thick working layer are close to the best results reported for any strained superlattice photocathode structure, demonstrating the high potential of strain compensation for future photocathode applications. An analysis of the photoemission spectra is used to estimate the parameters responsible for the polarization losses.

Polarized Electrons for Linear Colliders

Future electron-positron linear colliders require a highly polarized electron beam with a pulse structure that depends primarily on whether the acceleration utilizes warm or superconducting rf structures. The International Linear Collider (ILC) will use cold structures for the main linac. It is shown that a dc-biased polarized photoelectron source such as successfully used for the SLC can meet the charge requirements for the ILC micropulse with a polarization approaching 90%.

A systematic study of polarized electron emission from strained GaAs/GaAsP superlattice photocathodes

Spin-polarized electron photoemission has been studied for GaAs/GaAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$ strained superlattice cathodes grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy. The superlattice structural parameters are systematically varied to optimize the photoemission characteristics. The heavy-hole and light-hole transitions are reproducibly observed in quantum efficiency spectra, enabling direct measurement of the band energies and the energy splitting. Electron-spin polarization as high as 86% with over 1% quantum efficiency has been observed.

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning of Polarized GaAs Photocathodes

Atomic hydrogen cleaning followed by heat cleaning at 450$^\circ$C was used to prepare negative-electron-affinity GaAs photocathodes. When hydrogen ions were eliminated, quantum efficiencies of 15% were obtained for bulk GaAs cathodes, higher than the results obtained using conventional 600$^\circ$C heat cleaning. The low-temperature cleaning technique was successfully applied to thin, strained GaAs cathodes used for producing highly polarized electrons. No depolarization was observed even when the optimum cleaning time of about 30 seconds was extended by a factor of 100.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Recent Progress at SLAC Extracting High Charge from Highly-Polarized Photocathodes for Future-Collider Applications

Future colliders such as NLC and JLC will require a highly-polarized macropulse with charge that is more than an order of magnitude beyond that which could be produced for the SLC. The maximum charge from the SLC uniformly-doped GaAs photocathode was limited by the surface charge limit (SCL). The SCL effect can be overcome by using an extremely high (>1019 cm-3) surface dopant concentration. When combined with a medium dopant concentration in the majority of the active layer (to avoid depolarization), the surface concentration has been found to degrade during normal heat cleaning (1 hour at 600 C). The Be dopant as typically used in an MBE-grown superlattice cathode is especially susceptible to this effect compared to Zn or C dopant. Some relief can be found by lowering the cleaning temperature, but the long-term general solution appears to be atomic hydrogen cleaning.

Spin Polarization and Color Superconductivity in Quark Matter

A coexistent phase of spin polarization and color superconductivity in high-density QCD is investigated using a self-consistent mean-field method at zero temperature. The axial-vector current stemming from the Fock exchange term of the one-gluon-exchange interaction has a central role to cause spin polarization. The magnitude of spin polarization is determined by the coupled Schwinger-Dyson equation with a superconducting gap function. As a significant feature the Fermi surface is deformed by the axial-vector self-energy and then rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken. The gap function is also taken to be anisotropic in accordance with the deformation. As a result of numerical calculation, it is found that spin polarization barely conflicts with color superconductivity, but almost coexists with it.

Time-Dependent Dynamics of the Bose-Fermi Mixed Condensed System

We study the monopole oscillation in the bose-fermi mixed condensed system by performing the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevsky (GP) and Vlasov equations. We find that the big damping exists for the fermion oscillation in the mixed system even at zero temperature

The SLAC Polarized Electron Source

The SLAC PES, developed in the early 1990s for the SLC, has been in continuous use since 1992, during which time it has undergone numerous upgrades. The upgrades include improved cathodes with their matching laser systems, modified activation techniques and better diagnostics. The source itself and its performance with these upgrades will be described with special attention given to recent high-intensity long-pulse operation for the E-158 fixed-target parity-violating experiment.

Neutron star properties with in-medium vector mesons

We explore the impact of in-medium modification of the properties of vector mesons on the nuclear equation of state and neutron star properties. It is found that in-medium modifications stiffen the nuclear equation of state considerably. If this feature has its correspondence in the full treatment of dense hadronic matter, then very little room is left for the existence of exotic phases like quark matter or boson condensates in the centers of neutron stars of canonical mass.

Near Muon Range Detector for the K2K Experiment -Construction and Performance-

A muon range detector (MRD) has been constructed as a near detector for the KEK-to-Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K). It monitors the neutrino beam properties at the near site by measuring the energy, angle and production point of muons produced by charged-current neutrino interaction. The detector has been working stably since the start of the K2K experiment.

The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project

The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project is a second generation long base line neutrino oscillation experiment that probes physics beyond the Standard Model by high precision measurements of the neutrino masses and mixing. A high intensity narrow band neutrino beam is produced by secondary pions created by a high intensity proton synchrotron at JHF (JAERI). The neutrino energy is tuned to the oscillation maximum at ~1 GeV for a baseline length of 295 km towards the world largest water Cerenkov detector, Super-Kamiokande. Its excellent energy resolution and particle identification enable the reconstruction of the initial neutrino energy, which is compared with the narrow band neutrino energy, through the quasi-elastic interaction. The physics goal of the first phase is an order of magnitude better precision in the nu_mu to nu_tau oscillation measurement (delta(Delta m_23^2)=10^-4 eV^2 and delta(sin^22theta_23)=0.01), a factor of 20 more sensitive search in the nu_mu to nu_e appearance (sin^22theta_{mu e} ~ 0.5sin^22theta_{13}>0.003), and a confirmation of the nu_mu to nu_tau oscillation or discovery of sterile neutrinos by detecting the neutral current events. In the second phase, an upgrade of the accelerator from 0.75 MW to 4 MW in beam power and the construction of 1 Mt Hyper-Kamiokande detector at Kamioka site are envisaged. Another order of magnitude improvement in the nu_mu to nu_e oscillation sensitivity, a sensitive search of the CP violation in the lepton sector (CP phase "delta" down to 10-20 degrees), and an order of magnitude improvement in the proton decay sensitivity is also expected.
