Compact Actively-Shielded Magnetic Field Coil within Mu-Metal Shields for ACME Electric Dipole Moment Measurements

A system of actively-shielded coils and mu-metal shields is devised, constructed and shown to provide the stable and spatially uniform magnetic field needed for the ACME III electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) measurement. Two layers of current-carrying coils, enclosed within three layers of ferromagnetic shields, produce a field that varies by less than 1 nT (10 $\uG$) within the 1 m $\times$ 4.2 cm $\times$ 4.2 cm interior volume in which a beam of ThO molecules are probed as they precess. The demountable shields are constructed from rectangular mu-metal plates. The largest, with a mass of 19 kg and an area of 2.18 m $\times$ 0.75 m, is easily carried by two people and just fits within a large available annealing oven. The assembly design facilitates low-stress mounting and handling to suppress changes in the magnetic properties of the mu metal, and also provides modular access to apparatus within the coils for maintenance and upgrades. The nearly static external ambient field is reduced within the shielded precession volume by up to a factor of $10^5$. During the magnetic field reversals that ACME uses to suppress systematic uncertainties, the ``actively-shielded'' coil largely cancels out its external fringing field to minimize the magnetization of the mu metal. Even though the shields are only 10 cm outside the coils, shield degaussing after every magnetic field reversal is not required. The non-reversing residual field stays below 1 nT for up to 17 hours when the field is reversed every 30 seconds, for example. The measured performance, compared to the previous generation ACME II apparatus, suggests that the magnetic-field-related systematic uncertainties for ACME III will be smaller by an estimated factor of 40 despite a five times longer precession volume and the use of three magnetic shielding layers rather than five.

Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Order in the Fe-substituted Bi-2201 Cuprate in the Heavily Overdoped Regime

Elastic neutron scattering experiments showed incommensurate antiferromagnetic peaks in 5% Fe-substituted Bi-2201 cuprate in the non-superconducting heavily overdoped regime. The incommensurability delta~0.21 is comparable to that observed in Fe-substituted Bi-2201 in the overdoped regime. [Hiraka et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 144501 (2010).] The magnetic correlation length is comparable between the overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes. It is plausible that incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is induced and stabilized by Fe in the heavily overdoped regime, which suggests a robust antiferromagnetic correlation beyond the superconducting dome in the phase diagram.

Magnetic phase diagram and spin Hamiltonian of antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoI$_4$

We report comprehensive thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements on the $S$ = 3/2 antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoI$_4$, a member of the thoroughly studied family of frustrated magnets Cs$_2MX_4$ ($M$ = Cu, Co, Ru, $X$ = Br, Cl, I, O). Unlike previously studied members, Cs$_2$CoI$_4$ undergoes a structural phase transition, for which we determine the low-temperature crystallographic structure. The resulting symmetry reduction strongly affects both the magnetic exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy. Despite the large parameter space, we propose a minimal magnetic Hamiltonian that reasonably captures the observed excitation spectrum, analyzed using extended SU(4) linear spin-wave theory.

Microscopic origin of hard-plane antiferromagnetism in the Kondo lattice Ce2Rh3Ge5

Hard plane antiferromagnetic order where ordered moments lie perpendicular to the single-ion crystal electric field easy axis is rare in Ce-based Kondo lattices and is a subject of active interest. Here we show that Ce$_2$Rh$_3$Ge$_5$ realizes a hard-plane antiferromagnetic state in which partial delocalization of the local moment gives rise to an RKKY exchange that overturns the single-ion easy-axis preference. Neutron diffraction reveals moments in the $ab$ plane, while inelastic neutron scattering and susceptibility establish a magnetic easy axis along $c$ in the paramagnetic regime, highlighting a clear inversion between single-ion and ordered-state anisotropies. In this work, we establish a unified microscopic framework to consistently account for partial $4f$-moment delocalization, enhanced in-plane RKKY exchange, and the resulting hard-plane antiferromagnetic order. Ce$_2$Rh$_3$Ge$_5$ thus provides a benchmark system in which single-ion anisotropy, Kondo screening, and RKKY exchange compete on comparable energy scales, revealing a cooperative route to hard-axis ordering in strongly hybridized Kondo lattices.

Spinons in a new Shastry-Sutherland lattice magnet Pr$_2$Ga$_2$BeO$_7$

Identifying the elusive spinon excitations in quantum spin liquid (QSL) materials is what scientists have long sought for. Recently, thermal conductivity ($\kappa$) has emerged to be a decisive probe because the fermionic nature of spinons leads to a characteristic nonzero linear $\kappa_0/T$ term while approaching zero Kelvin. So far, only a few systems have been reported to exhibit such term. Here, we report a $\kappa_0/T \approx$ 0.01 WK$^{-2}$m$^{-1}$, the largest $\kappa_0/T$ value ever observed in magnetic oxide QSL candidates, in a new quantum magnet Pr$_2$Ga$_2$BeO$_7$ with a Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL). Its QSL nature is further supported by the power-law temperature dependence of the specific heat, a plateau of muon spin relaxation rate, and gapless inelastic neutron spectra. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the introduction of XY spin anisotropy is the key for Pr$_2$Ga$_2$BeO$_7$ to be the first QSL realized on the SSL, after more than four decades of extensive studies on this celebrated magnetically frustrated lattice.

Magnetic resonance in the quasi-2D square lattice easy-plane antiferromagnet Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$

We report results of a multi-frequency (0.8-60 GHz) electron spin resonance study of the spin dynamics in the quasi-2D square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$ both in antiferromagnetically ordered and paramagnetic phases. We directly observe two zero-field gaps in the excitation spectrum of the ordered phase, the larger one being due to easy-plane anisotropy, and the smaller one indicates the presence of fourth-order in-plane anisotropy probably related to the multiferroic properties of this compound. We observe effects of hyperfine interaction on the electron spin resonance spectra in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, which turns out to be comparable with in-plane anisotropy. The hyperfine field strength is found from the observed low-temperature electron spin resonance data. The spin dynamics of the paramagnetic phase is characterized by strong broadening of the ESR absorption line, which can be ascribed to the vortex dynamics of a 2D magnet.

Magnetic structure of the magnetoelectric material Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$

A detailed investigation of Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$ was performed in its low-temperature magnetoelectric state combining neutron diffraction with magnetization measurements on single crystals. In the paramagnetic state at 10 K, polarized neutron diffraction was applied to reveal the components of the susceptibility tensor. The crystal and magnetic structures below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of $T_N \approx 4$ K were determined using unpolarized neutron diffraction. This data implies no structural phase transition from 10 K down to 2.5 K and is well described within the tetragonal space group $P\bar{4}2_1m$. We found that in zero magnetic field the magnetic space group is either $C_cmc2_1$ or $P_c2_12_12_1$ with antiferromagnetic order along the [110] or [100] directions, respectively, while neighboring spins along the [001] axis are ordered antiferromagnetically. A non-collinear spin arrangement due to small canting within the $ab$ plane is allowed by symmetry and observed experimentally. The ordered moment is found to be 3.24(3) $\mu_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 2.5 K and the temperature-field dependent magnetic phase diagram is mapped out by macroscopic magnetization. Distinct differences between the magnetic structure of Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$ as compared to those of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ and Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ are discussed.

SiPM module for the ACME III electron EDM search

This report shows the design and the performance of a large area Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) module developed detection of fluorescent light emitted from a 10 cm scale volume. The module was optimized for the planned ACME III electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) search, which will be a powerful probe for the existence of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The ACME experiment searched for the eEDM with the world's highest sensitivity using cold ThO polar molecules (ACME II). In ACME III, SiPMs will be used for detection of fluorescent photons (the fundamental signal of the experiment) instead of PMTs, which were used in the previous measurement. We have developed an optimized SiPM module, based on a 16-channel SiPM array. Key operational parameters are characterized, including gain and noise. The SiPM dark count rate, background light sensitivity, and optical crosstalk are found to all be well suppressed and more than sufficient for the ACME III application.

Estimation of radiative half-life of $^{229m}$Th by half-life measurement of other nuclear excited states in $^{229}$Th

We perform coincidence measurements between $\alpha$ particles and $\gamma$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to be $5.0(11)\times10^{3}$ s, which is one of the key parameters for the frequency standard based on $^{229}$Th.

Study of the $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

The rare decay $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of $( 7.20 \pm 0.05_{\rm stat} \pm 0.66_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-10}$, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from $K^{\pm}$ and scattered $K_L$ decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be $1.22 \pm 0.26$. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of $4.9 \times 10^{-9}$ on the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Fermionic Order by Disorder in a van der Waals Antiferromagnet

CeTe3 is a unique platform to investigate the itinerant magnetism in a van der Waals (vdW) coupled metal. Despite chemical pressure being a promising route to boost quantum fluctuation in this system, a systematic study on the chemical pressure effect on Ce3+(4f1) states is absent. Here, we report on the successful growth of a series of Se doped single crystals of CeTe3. We found a fluctuation driven exotic magnetic rotation from the usual easy-axis ordering to an unusual hard-axis ordering. Unlike in localized magnetic systems, near-critical magnetism can increase itinerancy hand-in-hand with enhancing fluctuation of magnetism. Thus, seemingly unstable hard-axis ordering emerges through kinetic energy gain, with the self-consistent observation of enhanced magnetic fluctuation (disorder). As far as we recognize, this order-by-disorder process in fermionic system is observed for the first time within vdW materials. Our finding opens a unique experimental platform for direct visualization of the rich quasiparticle Fermi surface deformation associated with the Fermionic order-by-disorder process. Also, the search for emergent exotic phases by further tuning of quantum fluctuation is suggested as a promising future challenge.

Spintronic superconductor in a bulk layered material with natural spin-valve structure

Multi-layered materials provide fascinating platforms to realize various functional properties, possibly leading to future electronic devices controlled by external fields. In particular, layered magnets coupled with conducting layers have been extensively studied recently for possible control of their transport properties via the spin structure. Successful control of quantum-transport properties in the materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers, so-called natural spin-valve structure, has been reported for the Dirac Fermion and topological/axion materials. However, a bulk crystal in which magnetic and superconducting layers are alternately stacked has not been realized until now, and the search for functional properties in it is an interesting yet unexplored field in material science. Here, we discover superconductivity providing such an ideal platform in EuSn2As2 with the van der Waals stacking of magnetic Eu layers and superconducting Sn-As layers, and present the first demonstration of a natural spin-valve effect on the superconducting current. Below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the electrical resistivity becomes zero in the in-plane direction. In contrast, it, surprisingly, remains finite down to the lowest temperature in the out-of-plane direction, mostly due to the structure of intrinsic magnetic Josephson junctions in EuSn2As2. The magnetic order of the Eu layers (or natural spin-valve) is observed to be extremely soft, allowing one to easy control of the out-of-plane to in-plane resistivities ratio from 1 to infinity by weak external magnetic fields. The concept of multi-functional materials with stacked magnetic-superconducting layers will open a new pathway to develop novel spintronic devices with magnetically controllable superconductivity.

Spin gap and L modulated intensity at the low-energy incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4

Low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in the multiband superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is investigated by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below $T_\text{c}$, the substantial spin gap is observed at $\mathbf{Q}_\text{IC}=(0.3, 0.3, L)$ where the quasi-one-dimensional $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets consisting of the Fermi surfaces are in good nesting conditions. $L$ modulated intensity of the low-energy IC magnetic fluctuations and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets have the horizontal line nodes.

Search for $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ and $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 X^0$ Decays at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

A search for the rare decay $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to $2.2 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target, a single event sensitivity of $( 1.30 \pm 0.01_{\rm stat} \pm 0.14_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-9}$ was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of $3.0 \times 10^{-9}$ for the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 X^0$ was also set as $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90% C.L., where $X^0$ is an invisible boson with a mass of $135~{\rm MeV}/c^2$.

Energy response of X-rays under high flux conditions using a thin APD for the energy range of 6-33 keV

This paper reports on the demonstration of a high-rate energy measurement technique using a thin depletion layer silicon avalanche photodiode (Si-APD). A dedicated amplitude-to-time converter is developed to realize simultaneous energy and timing measurement in a high rate condition. The energy response of the system is systematically studied by using monochromatic X-ray beam with an incident energy ranging from 6 to 33 keV. The obtained energy spectra contain clear peaks and tail distributions. The peak fraction monotonously decreases as the incident photon energy increases. This phenomenon can be explained by considering the distribution of the energy deposit in silicon, which is investigated by using a Monte Carlo simulation.

Low temperature magnetic properties of Nd2Ru2O7

We present magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of polycrystalline Nd2Ru2O7 down to 0.4 K. Three anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility measurements at 146, 21 and 1.8 K are associated with an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru4+ moments, a weak ferromagnetic signal attributed to a canting of the Ru4+ and Nd3+ moments, and a long-range-ordering of the Nd3+ moments, respectively. The long-range order of the Nd3+ moments was observed in all the measurements, indicating that the ground state of the compound is not a spin glass. The magnetic entropy of Rln2 accumulated up to 5 K, suggests the Nd3+ has a doublet ground state. Lattice distortions accompany the transitions, as revealed by neutron diffraction measurements, and in agreement with earlier synchrotron x-ray studies. The magnetic moment of the Nd3+ ion at 0.4 K is estimated to be 1.54(2){\mu}B and the magnetic structure is all-in all-out as determined by our neutron diffraction measurements.

Nuclear resonant scattering experiment with fast time response: new scheme for observation of $^{229\rm m}$Th radiative decay

Nuclear resonant excitation of the 29.19-keV level in $^{229}$Th with high-brilliance synchrotron- radiation and detection of its decay signal, are proposed with the aim of populating the extremely low-energy isomeric state of $^{229}$Th.The proposed experiment, known as nuclear resonant scattering (NRS), has the merit of being free from uncertainties about the isomer level energy. However, it requires higher time resolution and shorter tail in the response function of the detector than that of conventional NRS experiments because of the short lifetime of the 29.19-keV state. We have fabricated an X-ray detector system which has a time resolution of 56 ps and a shorter tail function than the previously reported one. We have demonstrated an NRS experiment with the 26.27-keV nuclear level of $^{201}$Hg for feasibility assessment of the $^{229}$Th experiment. The NRS signal is clearly distinct from the prompt electronic scattering signal by the implemented detector system. The half-life of the 26.27-keV state of $^{201}$Hg is determined as 629 $\pm$ 18 ps which is better precision by a factor three than that reported to date.

Magnetic excitations from the two-dimensional interpenetrating Cu framework in Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$

We report detailed neutron scattering studies on Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The compound consists of two interpenetrating sublattices of Cu, labeled as Cu$_{\rm A}$ and Cu$_{\rm B}$, each of which forms a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The two sublattices order at different temperatures and effective exchange couplings within the sublattices differ by an order of magnitude. This yields an inelastic neutron spectrum of the Cu$_{\rm A}$ sublattice extending up to 300 meV and a much weaker dispersion of Cu$_{\rm B}$ going up to around 20 meV. Using a single-band Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian. From this, we find that linear spin-wave theory gives a good description to the magnetic spectrum. In addition, a magnetic field of 10 T is found to produce effects on the Cu$_{\rm B}$ dispersion that cannot be explained by conventional spin-wave theory.
