Longitudinal SDW order in a quasi-1D Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.

Magnetic Excitation in Artificially Designed Oxygen Molecule Magnet

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiment to study magnetic excitation of O$_2$ molecules adsorbed in microporous compound. The dispersionless excitation with characteristic intensity modulation is observed at $\hbar ω= 7.8$ meV at low temperature. The neutron cross section is explained by spin dimer model with intradimer distance of 3.1 Å. Anomalous behaviour in the temperature dependence is discussed in the context of enhanced magnetoelasticity in the soft framework of O$_2$ molecule.

Indirect magnetic interaction mediated by spin dimer in Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$

Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$ is a bicomponent compound that consists of Cu dimers and Fe chains with separate energy scale. By inelastic neutron scattering technique with high-energy resolution we observed the indirect Fe - Fe exchange coupling by way of the Cu dimers. The obtained parameters of the effective indirect interaction and related superexchange interactions are consistent with those estimated semi-statically. The consistency reveals that the Cu dimers play the role of nonmagnetic media in the indirect magnetic interaction.

Dynamics of quantum spin liquid and spin solid phases in IPA-CuCl3 under field

Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering is used to study spin correlations in the quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 in strong applied magnetic fields. A condensation of magnons and commensurate transverse long-range ordering is observe at a critical filed $H_c=9.5$ T. The field dependencies of the energies and polarizations of all magnon branches are investigated both below and above the transition point. Their dispersion is measured across the entire 1D Brillouin zone in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The critical wave vector of magnon spectrum truncation [Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 047210 (2006)] is found to shift from h_c 0.35 at H>H_c. A drastic reduction of magnon bandwidths in the ordered phase [Garlea et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 167202 (2007)] is observed and studied in detail. New features of the spectrum, presumably related to this bandwidth collapse, are observed just above the transition field.

Excitations from a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons in coupled spin ladders

The weakly coupled quasi-one-dimensional spin ladder compound (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$ is studied by neutron scattering in magnetic fields exceeding the critical field of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Commensurate long-range order and the associated Goldstone mode are detected and found to be similar to those in a reference 3D quantum magnet. However, for the upper two massive magnon branches the observed behavior is totally different, culminating in a drastic collapse of excitation bandwidth beyond the transition point.

Scaling of dynamic spin correlations in BaCu2SiGeO7

The magnetic dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional S = 1/2 chain system BaCu2(Si0.5Ge0.5)2O7 is studied in a wide range of energy transfers and temperatures. Contrary to previous erroneous reports [T. Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 077206 (2004)], the scaling properties observed in the range 0.5-25 meV are found to be fully consistent with expectations for a Luttinger spin liquid. At higher energies, a breakdown of scaling laws is observed and attributed to lattice effects. The results are complementary to those found in literature for other S = 1/2-chain compounds, such as KCuF3 and Cu-benzoate.

Magnetic excitation in a new spin gap compound Cu$_2$Sc$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$: Comparison to Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$

The compound \CuScGeO is presented as a new member of the family of weakly coupled spin chain and dimer compounds \CuMGeO. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron inelastic scattering measurements reveal that the compound has the same spin dimer component as \CuFeGeO. The observed narrow band excitation in bulk measurements is consistent with spin gap behavior. The energy scale of the weakly coupled dimers in the Sc compound is perfectly coincident with that in the Fe compound.

Erratum: Dynamics and scaling in a quantum spin chain material with bond randomness

Follow-up neutron measurements, performed on a sample much larger than the one used in the original study, show that in the energy range 0.5-45 meV the magnetic excitations in BaCu2SiGeO7 are indistinguishable from those in conventional (disorder-free) quantum S=1/2 chains. Scrutinizing the previous data, we found that the analysis was affected by a poorly identified structured background and an additional technical mistake in the data reduction.

Dynamics of composite Haldane spin chains in IPA-CuCl3

Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 are studied by cold neutron inelastic scattering. Strongly dispersive gap excitations are observed. Contrary to previously proposed models, the system is best described as an asymmetric quantum spin ladder. The observed spectrum is interpreted in terms of ``composite'' Haldane spin chains. The key difference from actual S=1 chains is a sharp cutoff of the single-magnon spectrum at a certain critical wave vector.

IPA-CuCl$_3$: a S=1/2 Ladder with Ferromagnetic Rungs

The spin gap material IPA-CuCl3 has been extensively studied as a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bondalternating S = 1/2 chain. This description of the system was derived from structural considerations and bulk measurements. New inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a totally different picture: IPA-CuCl3 consists of weakly coupled spin ladders with antiferromagnetic legs and ferromagnetic rungs. The ladders run perpendicular to the originally supposed bondalternating chain direction. The ferromagnetic rungs make this system equivalent to a Haldane S = 1 antiferromagnet. With a gap energy of 1.17(1) meV, a zone-boundary energy of 4.1(1) meV, and almost no magnetic anisotropy, IPA-CuCl3 may the best Haldane-gap material yet, in terms of suitability for neutron scattering studies in high magnetic fields.

Magnetic excitations in weakly coupled spin dimers and chains material Cu2Fe2Ge4O13

Magnetic excitations in a weakly coupled spin dimers and chains compound Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 are measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Both structure factors and dispersion of low energy excitations up to 10 meV energy transfer are well described by a semiclassical spin wave theory involving interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ($S = 5/2$) chains. Additional dispersionless excitations are observed at higher energies, at $\hbar ω= 24$ meV, and associated with singlet-triplet transitions within Cu$^{2+}$-dimers. Both types of excitations can be understood by treating weak interactions between the Cu$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ subsystems at the level of the Mean Field/ Random Phase Approximation. However, this simple model fails to account for the measured temperature dependence of the 24 meV mode.

Electron spin resonance in the $S$=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction BaCu$\_2$Ge$\_2$O$\_7$

We have investigated the electron spin resonance (ESR) on single crystals of BaCu$\_2$Ge$\_2$O$\_7$ at temperatures between 300 and 2 K and in a large frequency band, 9.6 -134 GHz, in order to test the predictions of a recent theory, proposed by Oshikawa and Affleck (OA), which describes the ESR in a $S$=1/2 Heisenberg chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find, in particular, that the ESR linewidth, $ΔH$, displays a rich temperature behavior. As the temperature decreases from $T\_{max}/2\approx $ 170 K to 50 K, $ΔH$ shows a rapid and linear decrease, $ΔH \sim T$. At low temperatures, below 50 K, $ΔH$ acquires a strong dependence on the magnetic field orientation and for $H \| c$ it shows a $(h/T)^2$ behavior which is due to an induced staggered field $h$, according to OA's prediction.

Spin waves and magnetic interactions in LiCu2O2

The quasi-one-dimensional helimagnet LiCu2O2 was studied by single crystal inelastic neutron scattering. The dispersion relation of spin wave excitations was measured in the vicinity of the principal magnetic Bragg reflection. A spin wave theoretical analysis of the data yields an estimate of the relevant exchange constants and explains the mechanism of geometric frustration that leads to helimagnetism. It is found that the simple antiferromagnetic J_1-J_2 model that was previously proposed is inadequate for LiCu2O2. The experimental findings are generally in a qualitative agreement with first principal calculations of [A. A. Gippius et al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 020406 (2004)], though certain important discrepancies remain to be explained.

Reply to Comment on "Competition between helimagnetism and commensurate quantum spin correlations in LiCu2O2"

Exchanged interactions in recently observed helical structure in LiCu2O2 is probed by inelastic neutron scattering. The main conlusions of Refs. [1,2] are confirmed: nn interactions in single chains are ferromagnetic and frustrated by nnn antiferromagnetic ones. However, in apparent disagreement with Refs. [1,2] double-chain interactions are found to be of the same order of magnitude as the single-chain ones, and thus involved in the frustration mechanism. [1] Drechsler et al., cond-mat/0411418. [2] A. Point configurations, Cremona transformations and the elliptic difference Painlevé equation

A theoretical foundation for a generalization of the elliptic difference Painlevé equation to higher dimensions is provided in the framework of birational Weyl group action on the space of point configurations in general position in a projective space. By introducing an elliptic parametrization of point configurations, a realization of the Weyl group is proposed as a group of Cremona transformations containing elliptic functions in the coefficients. For this elliptic Cremona system, a theory of $τ$-functions is developed to translate it into a system of bilinear equations of Hirota-Miwa type for the $τ$-functions on the lattice.

Cooperative ordering of gapped and gapless spin networks in Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$

The unusual magnetic properties of a novel low-dimensional quantum ferrimagnet Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$ are studied using bulk methods, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. It is shown that this material can be described in terms of two low-dimensional quantum spin subsystems, one gapped and the other gapless, characterized by two distinct energy scales. Long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperatures is a cooperative phenomenon caused by weak coupling of these two spin networks.

Ordered State in a Haldane Material PbNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ Doped with Magnetic and Non-Magnetic Impurities

Impurity effect is systematically studied in doped Haldane material Pb(Ni$_{1-x}$$M_x$)$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ ($M$ = Mn, Co, Cu, and Mg) by use of DC and AC susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The occurrence of three-dimensional ordered state is universally observed for all the impurities and the complete temperature -- concentration phase diagrams are obtained, which are qualitatively similar to that in other spin-gap materials. The unique feature is found in the drastic dependence of the transition temperatures on the species of the impurities. The consideration of effective Hamiltonian based on VBS model makes it clear that the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction and the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction between impurity and edge spins play a key role in the unique feature.
