Effective gauge field theory of the t-J model in the charge-spin separated state and its transport properties

We study the slave-boson t-J model of cuprates with high superconducting transition temperatures, and derive its low-energy effective field theory for the charge-spin separated state in a self-consistent manner. The phase degrees of freedom of the mean field for hoppings of holons and spinons can be regarded as a U(1) gauge field, $A_i$. The charge-spin separation occurs below certain temperature, $T_{\rm CSS}$, as a deconfinement phenomenon of the dynamics of $A_i$. Below certain temperature $T_{\rm SG} (< T_{\rm CSS})$, the spin-gap phase develops as the Higgs phase of the gauge-field dynamics, and $A_i$ acquires a mass $m_A$. The effective field theory near $T_{\rm SG}$ takes the form of Ginzburg-Landau theory of a complex scalar field $λ$ coupled with $A_i$, where $λ$ represents d-wave pairings of spinons. Three dimensionality of the system is crucial to realize a phase transition at $T_{\rm SG}$. By using this field theory, we calculate the dc resistivity $ρ$. At $T > T_{\rm SG}$, $ρ$ is proportional to $T$. At $T < T_{\rm SG}$, it deviates downward from the $T$-linear behavior as $ρ\propto T \{1 -c(T_{\rm SG}-T)^d \}$. When the system is near (but not) two dimensional, due to the compactness of the phase of the field $λ$, the exponent $d$ deviates from its mean-field value 1/2 and becomes a nonuniversal quantity which depends on temperature and doping. This significantly improves the comparison with the experimental data.

Comment on ``Confinement of slave particles in U(1) gauge theories of strongly interacting electrons"

In a recent Letter, Nayak argued that slave partices are always confined in gauge theories of strongly-correlated electron systems like the t-J model. The argument mostly relies on Elitzur's theorem and the fact that the effective gauge theory under discussion is at infinite coupling. On the other hand, in the previous papers we studied dynamics of the gauge theory of the t-J model showing that the slave particles are in the Coulomb phase below certain critical temperature T{CSS} that depends on hole doping. We comment on the discrepancy between the results in two papers.

Lifetime of Collective Isospin Rotations of a Quantum Meson Field

We calculate the lifetime of the collective isospin rotating solutions which have been found recently in the case a quantum N-component meson field with exact O(N) symmetry. For this purpose we take into account the small breaking of the O(N) symmetry associated to the non vanishing mass of the pion. This term induces a coupling between collective rotations and intrinsic meson excitations. We evaluate the associated damping time in the framework of linear response theory. We find damping times of the order of 100 fm/c, i.e. substantially longer than reaction times.

Mean field theory for collective motion of quantum meson fields

Mean field theory for the time evolution of quantum meson fields is studied in terms of the functional Schroedinger picture with a time-dependent Gaussian variational wave functional. We first show that the equations of motion for the variational wavefunctional can be rewritten in a compact form similar to the Hartree-Bogoliubov equations in quantum many-body theory and this result is used to recover the covariance of the theory. We then apply this method to the O(N) model and present analytic solutions of the mean field evolution equations for an N-component scalar field. These solutions correspond to quantum rotations in isospin space and represent generalizations of the classical solutions obtained earlier by Anselm and Ryskin. As compared to classical solutions new effects arise because of the coupling between the average value of the field and its quantum fluctuations. We show how to generalize these solutions to the case of mean field dynamics at finite temperature. The relevance of these solutions for the observation of a coherent collective state or a disoriented chiral condensate in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions is discussed.

Quantum generalization of the classical rotating solutions of the O(N) model

Analytic solutions of the mean field evolution equations for an N-component scalar field with O(N) symmetry are presented. These solutions correspond to rotations in isospin space. They represent generalizations of the classical solutions obtained earlier by Anselm and Ryskin. As compared to classical solutions new effects arise because of the coupling between the average value of the field and quantum fluctuations.

Resistivity in the spin-gap state of the t-J model

Being motivated by recent experimental data on YBaCuO, we calculate dc resistivity in the spin-gap state of charge- spin-separated t-J model by using a massive gauge theory of holons and spinons. The result shows it deviates downward from the T-linear behavior below the spin-gap onset temperature.

Quasi-excitations and superconductivity in the t-J model on a ladder

We study the t-J model on a ladder by using slave-fermion-CP^1 formalism which is quite useful for study of lightly-doped high-T_c cuprates. By integrating half of spin variables, we obtain a low-energy effective field theory whose spin part is nothing but CP^1 sigma model. We especially focus on dynamics of composite gauge field which determines properties of quasi-excitations. Value of the coefficient of the topological term strongly influences gauge dynamics and explaines why properties of quasi-excitations depend on the number of legs of ladder. We also show that superconductivity appears as a result of short-range antiferromagnetism and order parameter has d-wave type symmetry.

Fluctuation effects of gauge fields in the slave-boson t-J model

We present a quantitative study of the charge-spin separation(CSS) phenomenon in a U(1) gauge theory of the t-J model of high-Tc superconductures. We calculate the critical temperature of confinement-deconfinement phase transition below which the CSS takes place.

Chiral Phase Transition at Finite Temperature in the Linear Sigma Model

We study the chiral phase transition at finite temperature in the linear sigma model by employing a self-consistent Hartree approximation. This approximation is introduced by imposing self-consistency conditions on the effective meson mass equations which are derived from the finite temperature one-loop effective potential. It is shown that in the limit of vanishing pion mass, namely when the chiral symmetry is exact, the phase transition becomes a weak first order accompanying a gap in the order parameter as a function of temperature. This is caused by the long range fluctuations of meson fields whose effective masses become small in the transition region. It is shown, however, that with an explicit chiral symmetry breaking term in the Lagrangian which generates the realistic finite pion mass the transition is smoothed out irrespective of the choice of coupling strength.

Boost invariant quantum evolution of a meson field at large proper times

We construct asymptotic solutions of the functional Schroedinger equation for a scalar field in the Gaussian approximation at large proper time. These solutions describe the late proper time stages of the expansion of a meson gas with boost invariant boundary conditions. The relevance of these solutions for the formation of a disoriented chiral condensate in ultra relativistic collisions is discussed.

Particle-Flux Separation of Electrons in the Half-Filled Landau Level: Chargeon-Fluxon Approach

Mechanism of the particle-flux separation in the Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled with nonrelativistic fermions is studied in a nonperturbative method. This problem is very important for the composite fermion approach to the fractional quantum Hall effect. We show that due to repulsive interactions between electrons the composite fermions are stable quasiexcitations in the half-filled Landau level at low temperature.

Statistics of holons and spinons in the t-J model

We study the statistics of holons and spinons in the framework of the gauge theory. We start with the t-J model in the slave-boson formalism and use Chern-Simons gauge theory to study the statistics transmutation of quasiexcitations in the charge-spin separated phase.

Pion interferometry with pion-source-medium interactions

An extended pion source, which can be temporarily created by a high energy nuclear collision, will also absorb and distort the outgoing pions. We discuss how this effect alters the interferometric pattern of the two-pion momentum correlation function. In particular, we show that the two-pion correlation function decreases rapidly when the opening angle between the pions increases. The opening-angle dependence should serve as a new means of obtaining information about the pion source in the analysis of experimental data.
