Discovery of Small-Scale Spiral Structures in the Disk of SAO 206462 (HD 135344B): Implications for the Physical State of the Disk from Spiral Density Wave Theory

We present high-resolution, H-band, imaging observations, collected with Subaru/HiCIAO, of the scattered light from the transitional disk around SAO 206462 (HD 135344B). Although previous sub-mm imagery suggested the existence of the dust-depleted cavity at r~46AU, our observations reveal the presence of scattered light components as close as 0.2" (~28AU) from the star. Moreover, we have discovered two small-scale spiral structures lying within 0.5" (~70AU). We present models for the spiral structures using the spiral density wave theory, and derive a disk aspect ratio of h~0.1, which is consistent with previous sub-mm observations. This model can potentially give estimates of the temperature and rotation profiles of the disk based on dynamical processes, independently from sub-mm observations. It also predicts the evolution of the spiral structures, which can be observable on timescales of 10-20 years, providing conclusive tests of the model. While we cannot uniquely identify the origin of these spirals, planets embedded in the disk may be capable of exciting the observed morphology. Assuming that this is the case, we can make predictions on the locations and, possibly, the masses of the unseen planets. Such planets may be detected by future multi-wavelengths observations.

The missing cavities in the SEEDS polarized scattered light images of transitional protoplanetary disks: a generic disk model

Transitional circumstellar disks around young stellar objects have a distinctive infrared deficit around 10 microns in their Spectral Energy Distributions (SED), recently measured by the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), suggesting dust depletion in the inner regions. These disks have been confirmed to have giant central cavities by imaging of the submillimeter (sub-mm) continuum emission using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). However, the polarized near-infrared scattered light images for most objects in a systematic IRS/SMA cross sample, obtained by HiCIAO on the Subaru telescope, show no evidence for the cavity, in clear contrast with SMA and Spitzer observations. Radiative transfer modeling indicates that many of these scattered light images are consistent with a smooth spatial distribution for micron-sized grains, with little discontinuity in the surface density of the micron-sized grains at the cavity edge. Here we present a generic disk model that can simultaneously account for the general features in IRS, SMA, and Subaru observations. Particularly, the scattered light images for this model are computed, which agree with the general trend seen in Subaru data. Decoupling between the spatial distributions of the micron-sized dust and mm-sized dust inside the cavity is suggested by the model, which, if confirmed, necessitates a mechanism, such as dust filtration, for differentiating the small and big dust in the cavity clearing process. Our model also suggests an inwardly increasing gas-to-dust-ratio in the inner disk, and different spatial distributions for the small dust inside and outside the cavity, echoing the predictions in grain coagulation and growth models.

Images of the Extended Outer Regions of the Debris Ring Around HR 4796 A

We present high-contrast images of HR 4796 A taken with Subaru/HiCIAO in H-band, resolving the debris disk in scattered light. The application of specialized angular differential imaging methods (ADI) allows us to trace the inner edge of the disk with high precision, and reveals a pair of "streamers" extending radially outwards from the ansae. Using a simple disk model with a power-law surface brightness profile, we demonstrate that the observed streamers can be understood as part of the smoothly tapered outer boundary of the debris disk, which is most visible at the ansae. Our observations are consistent with the expected result of a narrow planetesimal ring being ground up in a collisional cascade, yielding dust with a wide range of grain sizes. Radiation forces leave large grains in the ring and push smaller grains onto elliptical, or even hyperbolic trajectories. We measure and characterize the disk's surface brightness profile, and confirm the previously suspected offset of the disk's center from the star's position along the ring's major axis. Furthermore, we present first evidence for an offset along the minor axis. Such offsets are commonly viewed as signposts for the presence of unseen planets within a disk's cavity. Our images also offer new constraints on the presence of companions down to the planetary mass regime (~9 Jupiter masses at 0.5", ~3 Jupiter masses at 1").

The SPICA coronagraphic instrument (SCI) for the study of exoplanets

We present the SPICA Coronagraphic Instrument (SCI), which has been designed for a concentrated study of extra-solar planets (exoplanets). SPICA mission provides us with a unique opportunity to make high contrast observations because of its large telescope aperture, the simple pupil shape, and the capability for making infrared observations from space. The primary objectives for the SCI are the direct coronagraphic detection and spectroscopy of Jovian exoplanets in infrared, while the monitoring of transiting planets is another important target. The specification and an overview of the design of the instrument are shown. In the SCI, coronagraphic and non-coronagraphic modes are applicable for both an imaging and a spectroscopy. The core wavelength range and the goal contrast of the coronagraphic mode are 3.5--27$μ$m, and 10$^{-6}$, respectively. Two complemental designs of binary shaped pupil mask coronagraph are presented. The SCI has capability of simultaneous observations of one target using two channels, a short channel with an InSb detector and a long wavelength channel with a Si:As detector. We also give a report on the current progress in the development of key technologies for the SCI.

Near-Infrared Multi-Band Photometry of the Substellar Companion GJ 758 B

GJ 758 B is a cold (~600K) companion to a Sun-like star at 29 AU projected separation, which was recently detected with high-contrast imaging. Here we present photometry of the companion in seven photometric bands from Subaru/HiCIAO, Gemini/NIRI and Keck/NIRC2, providing a rich sampling of the spectral energy distribution in the 1-5 micron wavelength range. A clear detection at 1.58 micron combined with an upper limit at 1.69 micron shows methane absorption in the atmosphere of the companion. The mass of the companion remains uncertain, but an updated age estimate indicates that the most likely mass range is ~30-40 Mjup. In addition, we present an updated astrometric analysis that imposes tighter constraints on GJ 758 B's orbit and identifies the proposed second candidate companion, "GJ 758 C", as a background star.

Direct Imaging of Fine Structures in Giant Planet Forming Regions of the Protoplanetary Disk around AB Aurigae

We report high-resolution 1.6 $\micron$ polarized intensity ($PI$) images of the circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star AB Aur at a radial distance of 22 AU ($0."15$) up to 554 AU (3.$"$85), which have been obtained by the high-contrast instrument HiCIAO with the dual-beam polarimetry. We revealed complicated and asymmetrical structures in the inner part ($\lesssim$140 AU) of the disk, while confirming the previously reported outer ($r$ $\gtrsim$200 AU) spiral structure. We have imaged a double ring structure at $\sim$40 and $\sim$100 AU and a ring-like gap between the two. We found a significant discrepancy of inclination angles between two rings, which may indicate that the disk of AB Aur is warped. Furthermore, we found seven dips (the typical size is $\sim$45 AU or less) within two rings as well as three prominent $PI$ peaks at $\sim$40 AU. The observed structures, including a bumpy double ring, a ring-like gap, and a warped disk in the innermost regions, provide essential information for understanding the formation mechanism of recently detected wide-orbit ($r$ $>$20 AU) planets.

Imaging of a Transitional Disk Gap in Reflected Light: Indications of Planet Formation Around the Young Solar Analog LkCa 15

We present H- and Ks-band imaging data resolving the gap in the transitional disk around LkCa 15, revealing the surrounding nebulosity. We detect sharp elliptical contours delimiting the nebulosity on the inside as well as the outside, consistent with the shape, size, ellipticity, and orientation of starlight reflected from the far-side disk wall, whereas the near-side wall is shielded from view by the disk's optically thick bulk. We note that forward-scattering of starlight on the near-side disk surface could provide an alternate interpretation of the nebulosity. In either case, this discovery provides confirmation of the disk geometry that has been proposed to explain the spectral energy distributions (SED) of such systems, comprising an optically thick outer disk with an inner truncation radius of ~46 AU enclosing a largely evacuated gap. Our data show an offset of the nebulosity contours along the major axis, likely corresponding to a physical pericenter offset of the disk gap. This reinforces the leading theory that dynamical clearing by at least one orbiting body is the cause of the gap. Based on evolutionary models, our high-contrast imagery imposes an upper limit of 21 Jupiter masses on companions at separations outside of 0.1" and of 13 Jupiter masses outside of 0.2". Thus, we find that a planetary system around LkCa 15 is the most likely explanation for the disk architecture.

Measurement of the atmospheric muon charge ratio with the OPERA detector

The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum.

The role of f -electrons in the Fermi surface of the heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4

We present a detailed quantum oscillation study of the Fermi surface of the recently discovered Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4 . We compare the data, obtained at fields from 10 to 45 Tesla, to band structure calculations performed using the local density approximation. Analysis of the data suggests that f-holes participate in the Fermi surface up to the highest magnetic fields studied. We comment on the significance of these findings for the unconventional superconducting properties of this material.

Planetary Formation Scenarios Revistied: Core-Accretion Versus Disk Instability

The core-accretion and disk instability models have so far been used to explain planetary formation. These models have different conditions, such as planet mass, disk mass, and metallicity for formation of gas giants. The core-accretion model has a metallicity condition ([Fe/H] > −1.17 in the case of G-type stars), and the mass of planets formed is less than 6 times that of the Jupiter mass MJ. On the other hand, the disk instability model does not have the metallicity condition, but requires the disk to be 15 times more massive compared to the minimum mass solar nebulae model. The mass of planets formed is more than 2MJ. These results are compared to the 161 detected planets for each spectral type of the central stars. The results show that 90% of the detected planets are consistent with the core-accretion model regardless of the spectral type. The remaining 10% are not in the region explained by the core-accretion model, but are explained by the disk instability model. We derived the metallicity dependence of the formation probability of gas giants for the core-accretion model. Comparing the result with the observed fraction having gas giants, they are found to be consistent. On the other hand, the observation cannot be explained by the disk instability model, because the condition for gas giant formation is independent of the metallicity. Consequently, most of planets detected so far are thought to have been formed by the core-accretion process, and the rest by the disk instability process.

Improved Taylor Expansion method in the Ising model

We apply an improved Taylor expansion method, which is a variational scheme to the Ising model in two dimensions. This method enables us to evaluate the free energy and magnetization in strong coupling regions from the weak coupling expansion, even in the case of a phase transition. We determine the approximate value of the transition point using this scheme. In the presence of an external magnetic field, we find both stable and metastable physical states.

Mean Field Approximation of IIB Matrix Model and Emergence of Four Dimensional Space-Time

For the purpose of analyzing non-perturbative dynamics of string theory, Nishimura and Sugino have applied an improved mean field approximation (IMFA) to IIB matrix model. We have extracted the essence of the IMFA and obtained a general scheme, an improved Taylor expansion, that can be applied to a wide class of series which is not necessarily convergent. This approximation scheme with the help of the 2PI free energy enables us to perform higher order calculations. We have shown that the value of the free energy is stable at higher orders, which supports the validity of the approximation. Moreover, the ratio between the extent of ``our'' space-time and that of the internal space is found to increase rapidly as we take the higher orders into account. Our results suggest that the four dimensional space-time emerges spontaneously in IIB matrix model.

Correspondence between Noncommutative Soliton and Open String/D-brane System via Gaussian Damping Factor

The gaussian damping factor (g.d.f.) and the new interaction vertex with the symplectic tensor are the characteristic properties of the N-point scalar-vector scattering amplitudes of the p-p' (p < p') open string system which realizes noncommutative geometry. The g.d.f. is here interpreted as a form factor of the Dp-brane by noncommutative U(1) current. Observing that the g.d.f. is in fact equal to the Fourier transform of the noncommutative projector soliton introduced by Gopakumar, Minwalla and Strominger, we further identify the Dp-brane in the zero slope limit with the noncommutative soliton state. It is shown that the g.d.f. depends only on the total momentum of N-2 incoming/outgoing photons in the zero slope limit. In the description of the low-energy effective action (LEEA) proposed before, this is shown to follow from the delta function propagator and the form of the initial/final wave functions in the soliton sector which resides in x^{m} m= p+1, ...p' dependent part of the scalar field Φ(x^μ, x^m). The three and four point amplitudes computed from LEEA agree with string calculation. We discuss related issues which are resummation/lifting of infinite degeneracy and conservation of momentum transverse to the Dp-brane.

Worldsheet and Spacetime Properties of p-p' System with B Field and Noncommutative Geometry

We study worldsheet and spacetime properties of the p-p' (p < p') open string system with constant B_{ij} field viewed from the Dp' brane. The description of this system in terms of the CFT with spin and twist fields leads us to consider the renormal ordering procedure from the SL(2,R) invariant vacuum to the oscillator vacuum. We compute the attendant two distinct superspace two-point functions as well as their difference (the subtracted two-point function). These bring us an integral (Koba-Nielsen) representation for the multiparticle tree scattering amplitudes consisting of N-2 vectors and two tachyons. We evaluate them explicitly for the N=3,4 cases. Several novel features are observed which include a momentum dependent multiplicative factor to each external vector leg and the emergence of a symplectic tensor multiplying the polarization vectors. In the zero slope limit, the principal parts of the amplitudes translate into a noncommutative field theory in p'+1 dimensions in which a scalar field decaying exponentially in (p'-p) dimensions and a noncommutative U(1) gauge field interact via the minimal coupling and a new interaction. A large number of nearly massless states noted before are shown to propagate in the t-channel.

p-p' System with B-field, Branes at Angles and Noncommutative Geometry

We study the generic $p-p^\prime$ system in the presence of constant NS 2-form $B_{ij}$ field. We derive properties concerning with the noncommutativity of D-brane worldvolume, the Green functions and the spectrum of this system. In the zero slope limit, a large number of light states appear as the lowest excitations in appropriate cases. We are able to relate the energies of the lowest states after the GSO projection with the configurations of branes at angles. Through analytic continuation, the system is compared with the branes with relative motion.

Berry's Connection and USp(2k) Matrix Model

Berry's connection is computed in the USp(2k) matrix model. In T dualized quantum mechanics, the Berry phase exhibits a residual interaction taking place at a distance m_(f) from the orientifold surface via the integration of the fermions in the fundamental representation. This is interpreted as a coupling of the magnetic D2 with the electric D4 branes. We make a comment on the Berry phase associated with the 6D nonabelian gauge anomaly whose cancellation selects the number of flavours n_f=16.
