Transient photon echoes from donor-bound excitons in ZnO epitaxial layers

The coherent optical response from 140~nm and 65~nm thick ZnO epitaxial layers is studied using transient four-wave-mixing spectroscopy with picosecond temporal resolution. Resonant excitation of neutral donor-bound excitons results in two-pulse and three-pulse photon echoes. For the donor-bound A exciton (D$^0$X$_\text{A}$) at temperature of 1.8~K we evaluate optical coherence times $T_2=33-50$~ps corresponding to homogeneous linewidths of $13-19~μ$eV, about two orders of magnitude smaller as compared with the inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. The coherent dynamics is determined mainly by the population decay with time $T_1=30-40$~ps, while pure dephasing is negligible in the studied high quality samples even for strong optical excitation. Temperature increase leads to a significant shortening of $T_2$ due to interaction with acoustic phonons. In contrast, the loss of coherence of the donor-bound B exciton (D$^0$X$_\text{B}$) is significantly faster ($T_2=3.6$~ps) and governed by pure dephasing processes.

Dynamics of dipoles and vortices in nonlinearly-coupled three-dimensional harmonic oscillators

The dynamics of a pair of three-dimensional matter-wave harmonic oscillators (HOs) coupled by a repulsive cubic nonlinearity is investigated through direct simulations of the respective GrossPitaevskii equations (GPEs) and with the help of the finite-mode Galerkin approximation (GA),which represents the two interacting wave functions by a superposition of 3 + 3 HO p -wave eigenfunctions with orbital and magnetic quantum numbers l = 1 and m = 1; 0; 1. First, the GA very accurately predicts a broadly degenerate set of the system's ground states in the p -wave manifold, in the form of complexes built of a dipole coaxial with another dipole or vortex, as well as complexes built of mutually orthogonal dipoles. Next, pairs of non-coaxial vortices and/or dipoles, including pairs of mutually perpendicular vortices, develop remarkably stable dynamical regimes, which feature periodic exchange of the angular momentum and periodic switching between dipoles and vortices. For a moderately strong nonlinearity, simulations of the coupled GPEs agree very well with results produced by the GA, demonstrating that the dynamics is accurately spanned by the set of six modes limited to l = 1.

Ultrafast shift and rectification photocurrents in GaAs quantum wells: Excitation intensity dependence and the importance of bandmixing

A microscopic approach that is based on the multisubband semiconductor Bloch equations formulated in the basis of a 14-band ${\mathbf k} \cdot {\mathbf p}$ model is employed to compute the temporal dynamics of photocurrents in GaAs quantum wells following the excitation with femtosecond laser pulses. This approach provides a transparent description of the interband, intersubband, and intraband excitations, fully includes all resonant as well as off-resonant excitations, and treats the light-matter interaction non-perturbatively. For linearly polarized excitations the photocurrents contain contributions from shift and rectification currents. We numerically compute and analyze these currents generated by the excitation with femtosecond laser pulses for [110]- and [111]-oriented GaAs quantum wells. It is shown that the often employed perturbative $χ^{(2)}$-approach breaks down for peak fields larger than about 10~kV/cm and that non-perturbative effects lead to a reduction of the peak values of the shift and rectification currents and to temporal oscillations which originate from Rabi flopping. In particular, we find a complex oscillatory photon energy dependence of the magnitudes of the shift and rectification currents. Our simulations demonstrate that this dependence is the result of mixing between the heavy- and light-hole valence bands. This is a surprising finding since the bandmixing has an even larger influence on the strength of the photocurrents than the absorption coefficient. For [110]-oriented GaAs quantum wells the calculated photon energy dependence is compared to experimental results and a good agreement is obtained which validates our theoretical approach.

Sub-cycle control of terahertz high-harmonic generation by dynamical Bloch oscillations

Ultrafast charge transport in strongly biased semiconductors is at the heart of highspeed electronics, electro-optics, and fundamental solid-state physics. Intense light pulses in the terahertz (THz) spectral range have opened fascinating vistas: Since THz photon energies are far below typical electronic interband resonances, a stable electromagnetic waveform may serve as a precisely adjustable bias. Novel quantum phenomena have been anticipated for THz amplitudes reaching atomic field strengths. We exploit controlled THz waveforms with peak fields of 72 MV/cm to drive coherent interband polarization combined with dynamical Bloch oscillations in semiconducting gallium selenide. These dynamics entail the emission of phase-stable high-harmonic transients, covering the entire THz-to-visible spectral domain between 0.1 and 675 THz. Quantum interference of different ionization paths of accelerated charge carriers is controlled via the waveform of the driving field and explained by a quantum theory of inter- and intraband dynamics. Our results pave the way towards all-coherent THz-rate electronics.

Non-coaxial vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates: Persistent precession and nutation

It is demonstrated that a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with all-repulsive inter-atomic interactions loaded into a radially symmetric harmonic trap supports robust non-coaxial vortices with approximately orthogonal vortex lines in each of the components. These cross vortices are excited from the linear modes by a sudden switch-on of the nonlinearity (via Feshbach resonance) and are characterized by persistent dynamical regimes of precession with nutation, resembling the motion of a rigid body. The obtained dynamics can be understood qualitatively on the basis of a simple mechanical model.

Coupled Airy breathers

The dynamics of two component coupled Airy beams is investigated. In the linear propagation regime a complete analytic solution describes breather like propagation of the two components featuring non-diffracting self-accelerating Airy behavior. The superposition of two beams with different input properties opens the possibility to design more complex non-diffracting propagation scenarios. In the strongly nonlinear regime the dynamics remains qualitatively robust as is revealed by direct numerical simulations. Due to the Kerr effect the two beams emit solitonic breathers, whose coupling period is compatible with the remaining Airy-like beams. The results of this study are relevant for the description of photonic and plasmonic beams propagating in coupled planar waveguides as well as for birefrigent or multi-wavelengths beams.

Regeneration of Airy pulses in fiber-optic links with dispersion management of the two leading dispersion terms of opposite signs

Dispersion management of periodically alternating fiber sections with opposite signs of two leading dispersion terms is applied for the regeneration of self-accelerating truncated Airy pulses. It is demonstrated that for such a dispersion management scheme, the direction of the acceleration of the pulse is reversed twice within each period. In this scheme the system features light hot spots in the center of each fiber section, where the energy of the light pulse is tightly focused in a short temporal slot. Comprehensive numerical studies demonstrate a long lasting propagation also under the influence of a strong fiber Kerr nonlinearity.

Inverse Spin Hall Effect in NiFe / Normal Metal Bilayers

Spin pumping in ferromagnets provides a source of pure spin currents. Via the inverse spin Hall effect a spin current is converted into a charge current and a corresponding detectable DC-voltage. The ratio of injected spin current to resulting charge current is given by the spin Hall angle. However, the number of experiments more or less equals the number of different values for spin Hall angles, even for the most studied normal metal platinum. This publication provides a full study of inverse spin Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance for different NiFe(Py) / normal metal bilayers using a coplanar waveguide structure. Angle and frequency dependent measurements strongly suggest that spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect can be used to quantify spin Hall angles only if certain conditions are met. Ruling out the anisotropic magnetoresistance as a parasitic voltage generating effect measurements of the inverse spin Hall effect in Py/Pt and Py/Au yield spin Hall angles of 0.09 and 0.008 respectively. Furthermore, DC-voltages at ferromagnetic resonance for Py/Pt are studied as a function of temperature and the results are compared to theoretical models.

Electron g-Factor Anisotropy in Symmetric (110)-oriented GaAs Quantum Wells

We demonstrate by spin quantum beat spectroscopy that in undoped symmetric (110)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells even a symmetric spatial envelope wavefunction gives rise to an asymmetric in-plane electron Landé-g-factor. The anisotropy is neither a direct consequence of the asymmetric in-plane Dresselhaus splitting nor of the asymmetric Zeeman splitting of the hole bands but is a pure higher order effect that exists as well for diamond type lattices. The measurements for various well widths are very well described within 14 x 14 band k.p theory and illustrate that the electron spin is an excellent meter variable to map out the internal -otherwise hidden- symmetries in two dimensional systems. Fourth order perturbation theory yields an analytical expression for the strength of the g-factor anisotropy, providing a qualitative understanding of the observed effects.

Optical Resonators in Current and Future Experiments of the ALPS Collaboration

The ALPS collaboration runs a "light shining through a wall" (LSW) experiment to search for weakly interacting sub-eV particles (WISPs). Its sensitivity is significantly enhanced by the incorporation of a large-scale production resonator and a small-scale high-power resonant second harmonic generator. Here we report on important experimental details and limitations of these resonators and derive recommendations for further experiments. A very promising improvement for a future ALPS experiment is the incorporation of an additional large-scale regeneration resonator. We present a rough sketch of how to combine a regeneration resonator with a single-photon counter (SPC) as detector for regenerated photons.

Signatures of Many-Particle Correlations in Two-Dimensional Fourier-Transform Spectra of Semiconductor Nanostructures

On the basis of a microscopic theory, the signatures of many-particle correlations in Two-Dimensional Fourier-Transform Spectra (2D-FTS) of semiconductor nanostructures are identified and compared to experimental data. Spectra in the photon energy range of the heavy-hole and light-hole excitonic resonances show characteristic features due to correlations, which depend on the relative polarization directions of the excitation pulses.

Characterization of Disorder in Semiconductors via Single-Photon Interferometry

The method of angular photonic correlations of spontaneous emission is introduced as an experimental, purely optical scheme to characterize disorder in semiconductor nanostructures. The theoretical expression for the angular correlations is derived and numerically evaluated for a model system. The results demonstrate how the proposed experimental method yields direct information about the spatial distribution of the relevant states and thus on the disorder present in the system.

Microscopic modeling of photoluminescence of strongly disordered semiconductors

A microscopic theory for the luminescence of ordered semiconductors is modified to describe photoluminescence of strongly disordered semiconductors. The approach includes both diagonal disorder and the many-body Coulomb interaction. As a case study, the light emission of a correlated plasma is investigated numerically for a one-dimensional two-band tight-binding model. The band structure of the underlying ordered system is assumed to correspond to either a direct or an indirect semiconductor. In particular, luminescence and absorption spectra are computed for various levels of disorder and sample temperature to determine thermodynamic relations, the Stokes shift, and the radiative lifetime distribution.

Microscopic analysis of the coherent optical generation and the decay of charge and spin currents in semiconductor heterostructures

The coherent optical injection and temporal decay of spin and charge currents in semiconductor heterostructures is described microscopically, including excitonic effects, carrier LO-phonon and carrier-carrier scattering, as well as nonperturbative light-field-induced intraband and interband excitations. A nonmonotonous dependence of the currents on the intensities of the laser beams is predicted. Enhanced damping of the spin current relative to the charge current is obtained as a consequence of spin-dependent Coulomb scattering.

Interacting electrons in a one-dimensional random array of scatterers - A Quantum Dynamics and Monte-Carlo study

The quantum dynamics of an ensemble of interacting electrons in an array of random scatterers is treated using a new numerical approach for the calculation of average values of quantum operators and time correlation functions in the Wigner representation. The Fourier transform of the product of matrix elements of the dynamic propagators obeys an integral Wigner-Liouville-type equation. Initial conditions for this equation are given by the Fourier transform of the Wiener path integral representation of the matrix elements of the propagators at the chosen initial times. This approach combines both molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods and computes numerical traces and spectra of the relevant dynamical quantities such as momentum-momentum correlation functions and spatial dispersions. Considering as an application a system with fixed scatterers, the results clearly demonstrate that the many-particle interaction between the electrons leads to an enhancement of the conductivity and spatial dispersion compared to the noninteracting case.

Dynamics of Coulomb-correlated electron-hole pairs in disordered semiconductor nanowires

The dynamics of optically generated electron-hole pairs is investigated in a disordered semiconductor nanowire. The particle pairs are generated by short laser pulses and their dynamics is followed using the Heisenberg equation of motion. Is is shown that Coulomb-correlation acts against localization in the case of the two-interacting particles (TIP) problem. Furthermore, currents are generated using a coherent combination of full-gap and half-gap pulses. The subsequent application of a full-gap pulse after time $τ$ produces an intraband echo phenomenon $2τ$ time later. The echo current is shown to depend on the mass ratio between the electrons and the holes.

Optically induced coherent intra-band dynamics in disordered semiconductors

On the basis of a tight-binding model for a strongly disordered semiconductor with correlated conduction- and valence band disorder a new coherent dynamical intra-band effect is analyzed. For systems that are excited by two, specially designed ultrashort light-pulse sequences delayed by tau relatively to each other echo-like phenomena are predicted to occur. In addition to the inter-band photon echo which shows up at exactly t=2*tau relative to the first pulse, the system responds with two spontaneous intra-band current pulses preceding and following the appearance of the photon echo. The temporal splitting depends on the electron-hole mass ratio. Calculating the population relaxation rate due to Coulomb scattering, it is concluded that the predicted new dynamical effect should be experimentally observable in an interacting and strongly disordered system, such as the Quantum-Coulomb-Glass.

Propagation of Coulomb-correlated electron-hole pairs in semiconductors with correlated and anticorrelated disorder

Local ultrafast optical excitation of electron-hole pairs in disordered semiconductors provides the possibility to observe experimentally interaction-assisted propagation of correlated quantum particles in a disordered environment. In addition to the interaction driven delocalization known for the conventional single-band TIP-(two-interacting-particles)-problem the semiconductor model has a richer variety of physical parameters that give rise to new features in the temporal dynamics. These include different masses, correlated vs. anticorrelated disorder for the two particles, and dependence on spectral position of excitation pulse.
