Dynamics of measured many-body quantum chaotic systems

We consider the dynamics of continuously measured many-body chaotic quantum systems. Focusing on the observable of state purification, we analytically describe the limits of strong and weak measurement rate, where in the latter case monitoring up to time scales exponentially long in the numbers of particles is required. We complement the analysis of the limiting regimes with the construction of an effective replica theory providing information on the stability and the symmetries of the respective phases. The analytical results are tested by comparison to exact numerical simulations for a measured SYK model.

Non-ergodic extended states in the SYK model

We analytically study spectral correlations and many body wave functions of an SYK-model deformed by a one body contribution to the Hamiltonian. Our main result is the identification of a wide range of intermediate coupling strengths where the spectral statistics is of Wigner-Dyson type, while wave functions are non-uniformly distributed over Fock space and show fractal behavior. The structure of the theory suggests that such manifestations of non-ergodic extendedness may be a prevalent phenomenon in strongly interacting chaotic quantum systems.

Transport in topological insulators with bulk-surface coupling: Interference corrections and conductance fluctuations

Motivated by the experimental difficulty to produce topological insulators (TIs) of the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ family with pure surface-state conduction, we study the effect that the bulk can have on the low-temperature transport properties of gated thin TI films. In particular, we focus on interference corrections, namely weak localization (WL) or weak-antilocalization (WAL), and conductance fluctuations (CFs) based on an effective low-energy Hamiltonian. Utilizing diagrammatic perturbation theory we first analyze the bulk and the surface separately and subsequently discuss WL/WAL and CFs when a tunneling-coupling is introduced. We identify the relevant soft diffusion modes of the coupled system and use this insight to make simultaneous predictions for both interference corrections and conductance fluctuations in various parameter regimes. The results strongly suggest that the combined measurement of both quantities can provide an improved understanding of the physics underlying the low-temperature transport processes in thin TI films with bulk-surface coupling.

Spectral correlations in Anderson insulating wires

We calculate the spectral level-level correlation function of Anderson insulating wires for all three Wigner-Dyson classes. A measurement of its Fourier transform, the spectral form factor, is within reach of state-of-the-art cold atom quantum quench experiments, and we find good agreement with recent numerical simulations of the latter. Our derivation builds on a representation of the level-level correlation function in terms of a local generating function which may prove useful in other contexts.

Symmetry enforced line nodes in unconventional superconductors

We classify line nodes in superconductors with strong spin-orbit interactions and time-reversal symmetry, where the latter may include non-primitive translations in the magnetic Brillouin zone to account for coexistence with antiferromagnetic order. We find four possible combinations of irreducible representations of the order parameter on high symmetry planes, two of which allow for line nodes in pseudo-spin triplet pairs and two that exclude conventional fully gapped pseudo-spin singlet pairs. We show that the former can only be realized in the presence of band-sticking degeneracies, and verify their topological stability using arguments based on Clifford algebra extensions. Our classification exhausts all possible symmetry protected line nodes in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and a (generalized) time-reversal symmetry. Implications for existing non-symmorphic and antiferromagnetic superconductors are discussed.

Nodal lines and nodal loops in non-symmorphic odd-parity superconductors

We discuss the nodal structure of odd-parity superconductors in the presence of non-symmorphic crystal symmetries, both with and without spin-orbit coupling, and with and without time reversal symmetry. We comment on the relation of our work to previous work in the literature, and also the implications for unconventional superconductors such as UPt$_3$.

Spectral correlations in finite-size Anderson insulators

We investigate spectral correlations in quasi one-dimensional Anderson insulators with broken time-reversal symmetry. While energy levels are uncorrelated in the thermodynamic limit of infinite wire-length, some correlations remain in finite-size Anderson insulators. Asymptotic behaviors of level-level correlations in these systems are known in the large- and small-frequency limits, corresponding to the regime of classical diffusive dynamics and the deep quantum regime of strong Anderson localization. Employing non-perturbative methods and a mapping to the Coulomb-scattering problem, recently introduced by {\it M.~A.~Skvortsov} and {\it P.~M.~Ostrovsky}, we derive a closed analytical expression for the spectral statistics in the classical-to-quantum region bridging the known asymptotic behaviors. We further discuss how Poisson statistics at large energies develop into Wigner-Dyson statistics as the wire-length decreases.

Echo spectroscopy of Anderson localization

We propose a conceptually new framework to study the onset of Anderson localization in disordered systems. The idea is to expose waves propagating in a random scattering environment to a sequence of short dephasing pulses. The system responds through coherence peaks forming at specific echo times, each echo representing a particular process of quantum interference. We suggest a concrete realization for cold gases, where quantum interferences are observed in the momentum distribution of matter waves in a laser speckle potential. This defines a challenging, but arguably realistic framework promising to yield unprecedented insight into the mechanisms of Anderson localization.

Brownian scattering of a spinon in a Luttinger liquid

We consider strongly interacting one-dimensional electron liquids where elementary excitations carry either spin or charge. At small temperatures a spinon created at the bottom of its band scatters off low-energy spin- and charge-excitations and follows the diffusive motion of a Brownian particle in momentum space. We calculate the mobility characterizing these processes, and show that the resulting diffusion coefficient of the spinon is parametrically enhanced at low temperatures compared to that of a mobile impurity in a spinless Luttinger liquid. We briefly discuss that this hints at the relevance of spin in the process of equilibration of strongly interacting one-dimensional electrons, and comment on implications for transport in clean single channel quantum wires.

Interaction-induced backscattering in short quantum wires

We study interaction-induced backscattering in clean quantum wires with adiabatic contacts exposed to a voltage bias. Particle backscattering relaxes such systems to a fully equilibrated steady state only on length scales exponentially large in the ratio of bandwidth of excitations and temperature. Here we focus on shorter wires in which full equilibration is not accomplished. Signatures of relaxation then are due to backscattering of hole excitations close to the band bottom which perform a diffusive motion in momentum space while scattering from excitations at the Fermi level. This is reminiscent to the first passage problem of a Brownian particle and, regardless of the interaction strength, can be described by an inhomogeneous Fokker-Planck equation. From general solutions of the latter we calculate the hole backscattering rate for different wire lengths and discuss the resulting length dependence of interaction-induced correction to the conductance of a clean single channel quantum wire.

Strong Anderson localization in cold atom quantum quenches

Signatures of strong Anderson localization in the momentum distribution of a cold atom cloud after a quantum quench are studied. We consider a quasi one-dimensional cloud initially prepared in a well defined momentum state, and expanding for some time in a disorder speckle potential. Anderson localization leads to a formation of a coherence peak in the \emph{forward} scattering direction (as opposed to the common weak localization backscattering peak). We present a microscopic, and fully time resolved description of the phenomenon, covering the entire diffusion--to--localization crossover. Our results should be observable by present day technology.

Semiclassical theory of chaotic quantum resonances

States supported by chaotic open quantum systems fall into two categories: a majority showing instantaneous ballistic decay, and a set of quantum resonances of classically vanishing support in phase space. We present a theory describing these structures within a unified semiclassical framework. Emphasis is put on the quantum diffraction mechanism which introduces an element of probability and is crucial for the formation of resonances. Our main result are boundary conditions on the semiclassical propagation along system trajectories. Depending on whether the trajectory propagation time is shorter or longer than the Ehrenfest time, these conditions describe deterministic escape, or probabilistic quantum decay.

Incoherent pair tunneling in the pseudogap phase of cuprates

Motivated by a recent experiment by Bergeal et al., we reconsider incoherent pair tunneling in a cuprate junction formed from an optimally doped superconducting lead and an underdoped normal metallic lead. We study the impact of the pseudogap on the pair tunneling by describing fermions in the underdoped lead with a model self-energy that has been developed to reproduce photoemission data. We find that the pseudogap causes an additional temperature dependent suppression of the pair contribution to the tunneling current. We discuss consistency with available experimental data and propose future experimental directions.

Nonlinear conductance of long quantum wires at a conductance plateau transition: Where does the voltage drop?

We calculate the linear and nonlinear conductance of spinless fermions in clean, long quantum wires where short-ranged interactions lead locally to equilibration. Close to the quantum phase transition where the conductance jumps from zero to one conductance quantum, the conductance obtains an universal form governed by the ratios of temperature, bias voltage and gate voltage. Asymptotic analytic results are compared to solutions of a Boltzmann equation which includes the effects of three-particle scattering. Surprisingly, we find that for long wires the voltage predominantly drops close to one end of the quantum wire due to a thermoelectric effect.

Transport implications of Fermi arcs in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates

We derive the fermionic contribution to the longitudinal and Hall conductivities within a Kubo formalism, using a phenomenological Greens function which has been previously developed to describe photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates. We find that the in-plane electrical and thermal conductivities are metallic-like, showing a universal limit behavior characteristic of a d-wave spectrum as the scattering rate goes to zero. In contrast, the c-axis resistivity and the Hall number are insulating-like, being divergent in the same limit. The relation of these results to transport data in the pseudogap phase is discussed.

Spin Hamiltonian of Hyperkagome Na4Ir3O8

We derive the spin Hamiltonian for the quantum spin liquid Na4Ir3O8, and then estimate the direct and superexchange contributions between near neighbor iridium ions using a tight binding parametrization of the electronic structure. We find a magnitude of the exchange interaction comparable to experiment for a reasonable value of the on-site Coulomb repulsion. For one of the two tight binding parametrizations we have studied, the direct exchange term, which is isotropic, dominates the total exchange. This provides support for those theories proposed to describe this novel quantum spin liquid that assume an isotropic Heisenberg model.

Electronic Structure of Hyperkagome Na4Ir3O8

We investigate the electronic structure of the frustrated magnet Na4Ir3O8 using density functional theory. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, the hyperkagome lattice is characterized by a half-filled complex of states, making it a cubic iridium analogue of the high temperature superconducting cuprates. The implications of our results for this unique material are discussed.

The nature of spectral gaps due to pair formation

Several phenomenological self-energies have been presented to describe the pseudogap in cuprates. Here, we offer a derivation of the self-energy in two dimensions due to pair formation and compare it to photoemission data. We then use our results to address several questions of interest, including the existence of magneto-oscillations in the presence of the pseudogap, and the two length scale nature of vortices in underdoped cuprates.
