Ring isomorphisms in norm between Banach algebras of continuous complex-valued functions

Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact Hausdorff spaces, and let $C(X)$ and $C(Y)$ denote the commutative Banach algebras of all continuous complex-valued functions on $X$ and $Y$, respectively. We study bijective maps $T$ from $C(X)$ onto $C(Y)$ which preserve the ring structure in the norm in the following sense: \[ \|T(f+g)\|=\|T(f)+T(g)\|,\quad \|T(fg)\|=\|T(f)T(g)\| \qquad(f,g\in C(X)). \] Our main objective is to clarify whether such maps must necessarily be induced by homeomorphisms between the underlying spaces. Under the additional assumption that $T(\overline{f})=\overline{T(f)}$ for $f\in C(X)$, we prove that $T$ is a real-linear isometry. As a consequence, we obtain a concrete representation of such maps as weighted composition operators.

Status of the International Linear Collider

This paper is not a proposal for a CERN future project but provides information on the International Linear Collider (ILC) considered for Japan in order to facilitate the European Strategy discussion in a global context. It describes progress to date, ongoing engineering studies, updated cost estimate for the machine at $\sqrt{s}=250~\rm GeV$ and the situation in Japan. The physics of the ILC is not presented here, but jointly for all Linear Collider projects in a separate document ``A Linear Collider Vision for the Future of Particle Physics'' submitted for the forthcoming European Strategy deliberations.

Laboratory radiative accretion shocks on GEKKO XII laser facility for POLAR project

A new target design is presented to model high-energy radiative accretion shocks in polars. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained on the GEKKO XII laser facility for the POLAR project. The experimental results are compared with 2D FCI2 simulations to characterize the dynamics and the structure of plasma flow before and after the collision. The good agreement between simulations and experimental data confirm the formation of a reverse shock where cooling losses start modifying the post-shock region. With the multi-material structure of the target, a hydrodynamic collimation is exhibited and a radiative structure coupled with the reverse shock is highlighted in both experimental data and simulations. The flexibility on the laser energy produced on GEKKO XII, allowed us to produce high-velocity flows and study new and interesting radiation hydrodynamic regimes between those obtained on the LULI2000 and Orion laser facilities.

Localized NMR Mediated by Electrical-Field-Induced Domain Wall Oscillation in Quantum-Hall-Ferromagnet Nanowire

We present fractional quantum Hall domain walls confined in a gate-defined wire structure. Our experiments utilize spatial oscillation of domain walls driven by radio frequency electric fields to cause nuclear magnetic resonance. The resulting spectra are discussed in terms of both large quadrupole fields created around the wire and hyperfine fields associated with the oscillating domain walls. This provides the experimental fact that the domain walls survive near the confined geometry despite of potential deformation, by which a localized magnetic resonance is allowed in electrical means.

Direct evidence for ferromagnetic spin polarization in gold nanoparticles

We report the first direct observation of ferromagnetic spin polarization of Au nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.9 nm using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Owing to the element selectivity of XMCD, only the gold magnetization is explored. Magnetization of gold atoms estimated by XMCD shows a good agreement with the results obtained by conventional magnetometry. This result is evidence of intrinsic spin polarization in nano-sized gold.

Diameter dependence of ferromagnetic spin moment in Au nanocrystals

Au nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic spin polarization and show diameter dependence in magnetization. The magnetic moment per Au atom in the particle attains its maximum value at a diameter of about 3 nanometer (nm) in the Magnetization-Diameter curve. Because Au metal is a typical diamagnetic material, its ferromagnetic polarization mechanism is thought to be quite different from the ferromagnetism observed in transition metals. The size effect strongly suggests the existence of some spin correlation effect at the nanoscale. The so-called ``Fermi hole effect'' is the most probable one given in the free electron gas system. Ferromagnetism in Au nanoparticles is discussed using this model.

Measurement of the 6Li(e,e'p) reaction cross sections at low momentum transfer

The triple differential cross sections for the 6Li(e,e'p) reaction have been measured in the excitation energy region from 27 to 46 MeV in a search for evidence of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in 6Li. The cross sections have no distinct structures in this energy region, and decrease smoothly with the energy transfer. Angular distributions are different from those expected with the GDR. Protons are emitted strongly in the momentum-transfer direction. The data are well reproduced by a DWIA calculation assuming a direct proton knockout process.
