Imaging quantum interference in a monolayer Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate

Single atomic defects are prominent windows to look into host quantum states because collective responses from the host states emerge as localized states around the defects. Friedel oscillations and Kondo clouds in Fermi liquids are quintessential examples. However, the situation is quite different for quantum spin liquid (QSL), an exotic state of matter with fractionalized quasiparticles and topological order arising from a profound impact of quantum entanglement. Elucidating the underlying local electronic property has been challenging due to the charge neutrality of fractionalized quasiparticles and the insulating nature of QSLs. Here, using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we report atomically resolved images of monolayer $α-RuCl_3$, the most promising Kitaev QSL candidate, on metallic substrates. We find quantum interference in the insulator manifesting as incommensurate and decaying spatial oscillations of the local density of states around defects with a characteristic bias dependence. The oscillation differs from any known spatial structures in its nature and does not exist in other Mott insulators, implying it is an exotic oscillation involved with excitations unique to $α-RuCl_3$. Numerical simulations suggest that the observed oscillation can be reproduced by assuming that itinerant Majorana fermions of Kitaev QSL are scattered across the Majorana Fermi surface. The oscillation provides a new approach to exploring Kitaev QSLs through the local response against defects like Friedel oscillations in metals.

Quantum limiting behaviors of a vortex core in an anisotropic gap superconductor

Quantized bound states at a vortex core are discretized in YNi$_2$B$_2$C. By using scanning tunneling spectroscopy with an unprecedented 0.1 nm spatial resolution, we find and identify the localized spectral structure, where in addition to the first main peak with a positive low energy, a second subpeak coming from the fourfold symmetric gap structure is seen inside the energy gap. Those spectral features are understood by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for a fully three-dimensional gap structure. A particle-hole asymmetric spectrum at the core site and quantum oscillation in the spectra are clearly observed.

Majorana edge modes of superfluid 3He A-phase in a slab

Motivated by a recent experiment on the superfluid 3He A-phase with a chiral p-wave pairing confined in a thin slab, we propose designing a concrete experimental setup for observing the Majorana edge modes that appear around the circumference edge region. We solve the quasi-classical Eilenberger equation, which is quantitatively reliable, to evaluate several observables. To derive the property inherent to the Majorana edge state, the full quantum mechanical Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation is solved in this setting. On the basis of the results obtained, we perform decisive experiments to check the Majorana nature.

Splitting and oscillation of Majorana zero modes in the p-wave BCS-BEC evolution with plural vortices

We investigate how the vortex-vortex separation changes Majorana zero modes in the vicinity of the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) topological phase transition of p-wave resonant Fermi gases. By analytically and numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for spinless p-wave superfluids with plural vortices, it is demonstrated that the quasiparticle tunneling between neighboring vortices gives rise to the quantum oscillation of the low-lying spectra on the scale of the Fermi wavelength in addition to the exponential splitting. This rapid oscillation, which appears in the weak coupling regime as a consequence of quantum oscillations of quasiparticle wave functions, disappears in the vicinity of the BCS-BEC topological phase transition. This is understandable from that the wave function of the Majorana zero modes is described by the modified Bessel function in the strong coupling regime and thus it becomes spread over the vortex core region. Due to the exponential divergence of the modified Bessel function, the concrete realization of the Majorana zero modes near the topological phase transition requires the neighboring vortices to be separated beyond the length scale defined by the coherence length and the dimensionless coupling constant. All these behaviors are also confirmed by carrying out the full numerical diagonalization of the non-local Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation in a two dimensional geometry. Furthermore, this argument is expanded into the case of three-vortex systems, where a pair of core-bound and edge-bound Majorana states survive at zero energy state regardless of the vortex separation.

Rotating Dipolar Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates

We have computed phase diagrams for rotating spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. Spin textures including vortex sheets, staggered half-quantum- and skyrmion vortex lattices and higher order topological defects have been found. These systems exhibit both superfluidity and magnetic crystalline ordering and they could be realized experimentally by imparting angular momentum in the condensate.

Spin textures in condensates with large dipole moments

We have solved numerically the ground states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of dipolar interparticle forces using a semiclassical approach. Our motivation is to model, in particular, the spontaneous spin textures emerging in quantum gases with large dipole moments, such as 52Cr or Dy condensates, or ultracold gases consisting of polar molecules. For a pancake-shaped harmonic (optical) potential, we present the ground state phase diagram spanned by the strength of the nonlinear coupling and dipolar interactions. In an elongated harmonic potential, we observe a novel helical spin texture. The textures calculated according to the semiclassical model in the absence of external polarizing fields are predominantly analogous to previously reported results for a ferromagnetic F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, suggesting that the spin textures arising from the dipolar forces are largely independent of the value of the quantum number F or the origin of the dipolar interactions.

Vortex structures and zero energy states in the BCS-to-BEC evolution of p-wave resonant Fermi gases

Multiply quantized vortices in the BCS-to-BEC evolution of p-wave resonant Fermi gases are investigated theoretically. The vortex structure and the low-energy quasiparticle states are discussed, based on the self-consistent calculations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes and gap equations. We reveal the direct relation between the macroscopic structure of vortices, such as particle densities, and the low-lying quasiparticle state. In addition, the net angular momentum for multiply quantized vortices with a vorticity $κ$ is found to be expressed by a simple equation, which reflects the chirality of the Cooper pairing. Hence, the observation of the particle density depletion and the measurement of the angular momentum will provide the information on the core-bound state and $p$-wave superfluidity. Moreover, the details on the zero energy Majorana state are discussed in the vicinity of the BCS-to-BEC evolution. It is demonstrated numerically that the zero energy Majorana state appears in the weak coupling BCS limit only when the vortex winding number is odd. There exist the $κ$ branches of the core bound states for a vortex state with vorticity $κ$, whereas only one of them can be the zero energy. This zero energy state vanishes at the BCS-BEC topological phase transition, because of interference between the core-bound and edge-bound states.

Vortex waves in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We have theoretically studied vortex waves of Bose-Einstein condensates in elongated harmonic traps. Our focus is on the axisymmetric varicose waves and helical Kelvin waves of singly quantized vortex lines. Growth and decay dynamics of both types of vortex waves are discussed. We propose a method to experimentally create these vortex waves on demand.

Effective field theory for spinor dipolar Bose Einstein condensates

We show that the effective theory of long wavelength low energy behavior of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) with large dipole moments (treated as a classical spin) can be modeled using an extended Non-linear sigma model (NLSM) like energy functional with an additional non-local term that represents long ranged anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Minimizing this effective energy functional we calculate the density and spin-profile of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the mean-field regime for various trapping geometries. The resulting configurations show strong intertwining between the spin and mass density of the condensate, transfer between spin and orbital angular momentum in the form of Einstein-de Hass effect, and novel topological properties. We have also described the theoretical framework in which the collective excitations around these mean field solutions can be studied and discuss some examples qualitatively.

Vortex splitting and phase separating instabilities of coreless vortices in F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

The low lying excitations of coreless vortex states in F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are theoretically investigated using the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The spectra of the elementary excitations are calculated for different spin-spin interaction parameters and ratios of the number of particles in each sublevel. There exist dynamical instabilities of the vortex state which are suppressed by ferromagnetic interactions, and conversely, enhanced by antiferromagnetic interactions. In both of the spin-spin interaction regimes, we find vortex splitting instabilities in analogy with scalar BECs. In addition, a phase separating instability is found in the antiferromagnetic regime.

Role of the Majorana Fermion and the Edge Mode in Chiral Superfluidity near a p-Wave Feshbach Resonance

The visualization of chiral p-wave superfluidity in Fermi gases near p-wave Feshbach resonances is theoretically examined. It is proposed that the superfluidity becomes detectable in the entire BCS-BEC regimes through (i) vortex visualization by the density depletion inside the vortex core and (ii) intrinsic angular momentum in vortex free states. It is revealed that both (i) and (ii) are closely connected with the Majorana zero energy mode of the vortex core and the edge mode, which survive until the strong coupling BCS regime is approached from the weak coupling limit and vanish in the BEC regime.

Majorana bound state in rotating superfluid 3He-A between parallel plates

A concrete and experimentally feasible example for testing the putative Majorana zero energy state bound in a vortex is theoretically proposed for a parallel plate geometry of superfluid $^3$He-A phase. We examine the experimental setup in connection with ongoing rotating cryostat experiments. The theoretical analysis is based on the well-established Ginzburg--Landau functional, supplemented by microscopic calculations of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation, both of which allow the precise location of the parameter regions of the Majorana state to be found in realistic situations.

Kelvin Waves of Quantized Vortex Lines in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

We have theoretically investigated Kelvin waves of quantized vortex lines in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Counterrotating perturbation induces an elliptical instability to the initially straight vortex line, driven by a parametric resonance between a quadrupole mode and a pair of Kelvin modes of opposite momenta. Subsequently, Kelvin waves rapidly decay to longer wavelengths emitting sound waves in the process. We present a modified Kelvin wave dispersion relation for trapped superfluids and propose a simple method to excite Kelvin waves of specific wave number.

Magnetization profile and core level spectroscopy in a multiply quantized vortex of imbalanced Fermi superfluids

The core structure of multiply quantized vortices is theoretically investigated in fermionic superfluid near Feshbach resonance. Under population imbalance in two hyperfine spin states, the vortex core is filled in by the ``paramagnetic moment''. Here, we find the spatial oscillation of the magnetization inside the core sensitively due to the topological structure of the pairing field, in the range from the weak coupling regime to the unitary limit. This magnetization inside the giant core reveals the winding number of the vortex and directly results from the low-lying quasiparticle states bound inside the core. It is therefore proposed that the density profile experiment using phase contrast imaging can provide the spectroscopy of novel core level structures in giant vortices. To help the understanding on these outcomes, we also derive the analytic solution for the low-lying quasiparticle states inside the core of a multiply quantized vortex.

Imbalanced Superfluid Phase of a Trapped Fermi Gas in the BCS-BEC Crossover Regime

We theoretically investigate the ground state of trapped neutral fermions with population imbalance in the BCS-BEC crossover regime. On the basis of the single-channel Hamiltonian, we perform full numerical calculations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation coupled with the regularized gap and number equations. The zero-temperature phase diagram in the crossover regime is presented, where the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing state governs the weak-coupling BCS region of a resonance. It is found that the FFLO oscillation vanishes in the BEC side, in which the system under population imbalance turns into a phase separation (PS) between locally binding superfluid and fully polarized spin domains. We also demonstrate numerical calculations with a large particle number O(10^5), comparable to that observed in recent experiments. The resulting density profile on a resonance yields the PS, which is in good agreement with the recent experiments, while the FFLO modulation exists in the pairing field. It is also proposed that the most favorable location for the detection of the FFLO oscillation is in the vicinity of the critical population imbalance in the weak coupling BCS regime, where the oscillation periodicity becomes much larger than the interparticle spacing. Finally, we analyze the radio-frequency (RF) spectroscopy in the imbalanced system. The clear difference in the RF spectroscopy between BCS and BEC sides reveals the structure of the pairing field and local ``magnetization''.

Spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates; Classical spin approach

Magnetic dipole-dipole interaction dominated Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed under spinful situations. We treat the spin degrees of freedom as a classical spin vector, approaching from large spin limit to obtain an effective minimal Hamiltonian; a version extended from a non-linear sigma model. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we find several novel spin textures where the mass density and spin density are strongly coupled, depending upon trap geometries due to the long-range and anisotropic natures of the dipole-dipole interaction.

Vortex Core Structure in Neutral Fermion Superfluids with Population Imbalance

Quantized vortex core structure is theoretically investigated in Fermion superfluids with population imbalance for two atom species of neutral atom clouds near a Feshbach resonance. In contrast with vortex core in balance case where the quantum depletion makes a vortex visible through the density profile measurement, the vortex core is filled in and becomes less visible because the quantized discrete bound states are occupied exclusively by the majority species. Yet it is shown that the core can be visible through the minority density profile experiment using phase contrast imaging, revealing an interesting opportunity to examine low-lying Fermionic core bound states unexplored so far.

Generic Phase Diagram of Fermion Superfluids with Population Imbalance

It is shown by microscopic calculations for trapped imbalanced Fermi superfluids that the gap function has always sign changes, i.e., the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state like, up to a critical imbalance $P_c$, beyond which normal state becomes stable, at temperature T=0. A phase diagram is constructed in $T$ vs $P$, where the BCS state without sign change is stable only at $T\neq 0$. We reproduce the observed bimodality in the density profile to identify its origin and evaluate $P_c$ as functions of $T$ and the coupling strength. These dependencies match with the recent experiments.
