Type-II Calabi-Yau compactifications, T-duality and special geometry in general spacetime signature

We obtain the bosonic Lagrangians of vector and hypermultiplets coupled to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity in signatures $(0,4)$, $(1,3)$ and (2,2) by compactification of type-II string theories in signatures (0,10), (1,9) and (2,8) on a Calabi-Yau threefold. Depending on the signature and the distinctions between type-IIA/IIA$^*$/IIB/IIB$^*$/IIB' the resulting scalar geometries are special Kähler or special para-Kähler for vector multiplets and quaternion-Kähler or para-quaternion Kähler for hypermultiplets. By spacelike and timelike reductions we obtain three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supergravity theories coupled to two sets of hypermultiplets. We determine the c-maps relating vector to hypermultiplets, and show how the four-dimensional theories are related by spacelike, timelike and mixed, signature-changing T-dualities.

Cosmological Solutions, a New Wick-Rotation, and the First Law of Thermodynamics

We present a modified implementation of the Euclidean action formalism suitable for studying the thermodynamics of a class of cosmological solutions containing Killing horizons. To obtain a real metric of definite signature, we perform a `triple Wick-rotation' by analytically continuing all space-like directions. The resulting Euclidean geometry is used to calculate the Euclidean on-shell action, which defines a thermodynamic potential. We show that for the vacuum de Sitter solution, planar solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory and a previously found class of cosmological solutions of N = 2 supergravity, this thermodynamic potential can be used to define an internal energy which obeys the first law of thermodynamics. Our approach is complementary to, but consistent with the isolated horizon formalism. For planar Einstein-Maxwell solutions, we find dual solutions in Einstein-anti-Maxwell theory where the sign of the Maxwell term is reversed. These solutions are planar black holes, rather than cosmological solutions, but give rise, upon a standard Wick-rotation to the same Euclidean action and thermodynamic relations.

A Riemann-Hilbert approach to rotating attractors

We construct rotating extremal black hole and attractor solutions in gravity theories by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the Breitenlohner-Maison linear system. By employing a vectorial Riemann-Hilbert factorization method we explicitly factorize the corresponding monodromy matrices, which have second order poles in the spectral parameter. In the underrotating case we identify elements of the Geroch group which implement Harrison-type transformations which map the attractor geometries to interpolating rotating black hole solutions. The factorization method we use yields an explicit solution to the linear system, from which we do not only obtain the spacetime solution, but also an explicit expression for the master potential encoding the potentials of the infinitely many conserved currents which make this sector of gravity integrable.

Five-dimensional Nernst branes from special geometry

We construct Nernst brane solutions, that is black branes with zero entropy density in the extremal limit, of FI-gauged minimal five-dimensional supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. While the scalars take specific constant values and dynamically determine the value of the cosmological constant in terms of the FI-parameters, the metric takes the form of a boosted AdS Schwarzschild black brane. This metric can be brought to the Carter-Novotny-Horsky form that has previously been observed to occur in certain limits of boosted D3-branes. By dimensional reduction to four dimensions we recover the four-dimensional Nernst branes of arXiv:1501.07863 and show how the five-dimensional lift resolves all their UV singularities. The dynamics of the compactification circle, which expands both in the UV and in the IR, plays a crucial role. At asymptotic infinity, the curvature singularity of the four-dimensional metric and the run-away behaviour of the four-dimensional scalar combine in such a way that the lifted solution becomes asymptotic to AdS5. Moreover, the existence of a finite chemical potential in four dimensions is related to fact that the compactification circle has a finite minimal value. While it is not clear immediately how to embed our solutions into string theory, we argue that the same type of dictionary as proposed for boosted D3-branes should apply, although with a lower amount of supersymmetry.

Dynamical symmetry enhancement near N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity horizons

We show that all smooth Killing horizons with compact horizon sections of 4-dimensional gauged N=2 supergravity coupled to any number of vector multiplets preserve $2 c_1({\cal K})+4 \ell$ supersymmetries, where ${\cal K}$ is a pull-back of the Hodge bundle of the special Kähler manifold on the horizon spatial section. We also demonstrate that all such horizons with $c_1({\cal K})=0$ exhibit an SL(2,R) symmetry and preserve either 4 or 8 supersymmetries. If the orbits of the SL(2,R) symmetry are 2-dimensional, the horizons are warped products of AdS2 with the horizon spatial section. Otherwise, the horizon section admits an isometry which preserves all the fields. The proof of these results is centered on the use of index theorem in conjunction with an appropriate generalization of the Lichnerowicz theorem for horizons that preserve at least one supersymmetry. In all $c_1({\cal K})=0$ cases, we specify the local geometry of spatial horizon sections and demonstrate that the solutions are determined by first order non-linear ordinary differential equations on some of the fields.

Completeness in supergravity constructions

We prove that the supergravity r- and c-maps preserve completeness. As a consequence, any component H of a hypersurface {h=1} defined by a homogeneous cubic polynomial such that -d^2 h is a complete Riemannian metric on H defines a complete projective special Kahler manifold and any complete projective special Kahler manifold defines a complete quaternionic Kahler manifold of negative scalar curvature. We classify all complete quaternionic Kahler manifolds of dimension less or equal to 12 which are obtained in this way and describe some complete examples in 16 dimensions.

Non-extremal Black Holes, Harmonic Functions, and Attractor Equations

We present a method which allows to deform extremal black hole solutions into non-extremal solutions, for a large class of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Einstein-Vector-Scalar type theories. The deformation is shown to be largely independent of the details of the matter sector. While the line element is dressed with an additional harmonic function, the attractor equations for the scalars remain unmodified in suitable coordinates, and the values of the scalar fields on the outer and inner horizon are obtained from their fixed point values by making specific substitutions for the charges. For a subclass of models, which includes the five-dimensional STU-model, we find explicit solutions.

Special geometry, black holes and Euclidean supersymmetry

We review recent developments in special geometry and explain its role in the theory of supersymmetric black holes. To make this article self-contained, a short introduction to black holes is given, with emphasis on the laws of black hole mechanics and black hole entropy. We also summarize the existing results on the para-complex version of special geometry, which occurs in Euclidean supersymmetry. The role of real coordinates in special geometry is illustrated, and we briefly indicate how Euclidean supersymmetry can be used to study stationary black hole solutions via dimensional reduction over time. This article is an updated and substantially extended version of the previous review article `New developments in special geometry', hep-th/0602171.

Supersymmetric black holes in string theory

We review recent developments concerning supersymmetric black holes in string theory. After a general introduction to the laws of black hole mechanics and to black hole entropy in string theory, we discuss black hole solutions in N=2 supergravity, special geometry, the black hole attractor equations and the underlying variational principle. Special attention is payed to the crucial role of higher derivative corrections. Finally we discuss black hole partition functions and their relation to the topological string, mainly from the supergravity perspective. We try to summarize the state of art and discuss various open questions and problems.

Duality and black hole partition functions

Supersymmetric black holes provide an excellent theoretical laboratory to test ideas about quantum gravity in general and black hole entropy in particular. When four-dimensional supergravity is interpreted as the low-energy approximation of ten-dimensional string theory or eleven-dimensional M-theory, one has a microscopic description of the black hole which allows one to count microstates and to compare the result to the macroscopic (geometrical) entropy. Recently it has been conjectured that there is a very direct connection between the partition function of the topological string and a partition function for supersymmetric black holes. We review this idea and propose a modification which makes it compatible with electric-magnetic duality.

Black hole partition functions and duality

The macroscopic entropy and the attractor equations for BPS black holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories follow from a variational principle for a certain `entropy function'. We present this function in the presence of R^2-interactions and non-holomorphic corrections. The variational principle identifies the entropy as a Legendre transform and this motivates the definition of various partition functions corresponding to different ensembles and a hierarchy of corresponding duality invariant inverse Laplace integral representations for the microscopic degeneracies. Whenever the microscopic degeneracies are known the partition functions can be evaluated directly. This is the case for N=4 heterotic CHL black holes, where we demonstrate that the partition functions are consistent with the results obtained on the macroscopic side for black holes that have a non-vanishing classical area. In this way we confirm the presence of a measure in the duality invariant inverse Laplace integrals. Most, but not all, of these results are obtained in the context of semiclassical approximations. For black holes whose area vanishes classically, there remain discrepancies at the semiclassical level and beyond, the nature of which is not fully understood at present.

Asymptotic degeneracy of dyonic N=4 string states and black hole entropy

It is shown that the asymptotic growth of the microscopic degeneracy of BPS dyons in four-dimensional N=4 string theory captures the known corrections to the macroscopic entropy of four-dimensional extremal black holes. These corrections are subleading in the limit of large charges and originate both from the presence of interactions in the effective action quadratic in the Riemann tensor and from non-holomorphic terms. The presence of the non-holomorphic corrections and their contribution to the thermodynamic free energy is discussed. It is pointed out that the expression for the microscopic entropy, written as a function of the dilaton field, is stationary at the horizon by virtue of the attractor equations.

Stationary BPS Solutions in N=2 Supergravity with R^2-Interactions

We analyze a broad class of stationary solutions with residual N=1 supersymmetry of four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories with terms quadratic in the Weyl tensor. These terms are encoded in a holomorphic function, which determines the most relevant part of the action and which plays a central role in our analysis. The solutions include extremal black holes and rotating field configurations, and may have multiple centers. We prove that they are expressed in terms of harmonic functions associated with the electric and magnetic charges carried by the solutions by a proper generalization of the so-called stabilization equations. Electric/magnetic duality is manifest throughout the analysis. We also prove that spacetimes with unbroken supersymmetry are fully determined by electric and magnetic charges. This result establishes the so-called fixed-point behavior according to which the moduli fields must flow towards certain prescribed values on a fully supersymmetric horizon, but now in a more general context with higher-order curvature interactions. We briefly comment on the implications of our results for the metric on the moduli space of extremal black hole solutions.

Supersymmetric black hole solutions with $R^2$-interactions

We present a class of static supersymmetric multi-center black hole solutions arising in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories with terms quadratic in the Weyl tensor. We also comment on possible corrections to the metric on the moduli space of these black holes solutions.

Classical and quantum N=2 supersymmetric black holes

We use heterotic/type-II prepotentials to study quantum/classical black holes with half the $N=2, D=4$ supersymmetries unbroken. We show that, in the case of heterotic string compactifications, the perturbatively corrected entropy formula is given by the tree-level entropy formula with the tree-level coupling constant replaced by the perturbative coupling constant. In the case of type-II compactifications, we display a new entropy/area formula associated with axion-free black-hole solutions, which depends on the electric and magnetic charges as well as on certain topological data of Calabi--Yau three-folds, namely the intersection numbers, the second Chern class and the Euler number of the three-fold. We show that, for both heterotic and type-II theories, there is the possibility to relax the usual requirement of the non-vanishing of some of the charges and still have a finite entropy.

Moduli Spaces and Target Space Duality Symmetries in $(0,2)\; Z_N$ Orbifold Theories with Continuous Wilson Lines

We present the coset structure of the untwisted moduli space of heterotic $(0,2) \; Z_N$ orbifold compactifications with continuous Wilson lines. For the cases where the internal 6-torus $T_6$ is given by the direct sum $T_4 \oplus T_2$, we explicitly construct the Kähler potentials associated with the underlying 2-torus $T_2$. We then discuss the transformation properties of these Kähler potentials under target space modular symmetries. For the case where the $Z_N$ twist possesses eigenvalues of $-1$, we find that holomorphic terms occur in the Kähler potential describing the mixing of complex Wilson moduli. As a consequence, the associated $T$ and $U$ moduli are also shown to mix under target space modular transformations.
