QCD event generators with next-to-leading order matrix-elements and parton showers

A new method to construct event-generators based on next-to-leading order QCD matrix-elements and leading-logarithmic parton showers is proposed. Matrix elements of loop diagram as well as those of a tree level can be generated using an automatic system. A soft/collinear singularity is treated using a leading-log subtraction method. Higher order re-summation of the soft/collinear correction by the parton shower method is combined with the NLO matrix-element without any double-counting in this method. An example of the event generator for Drell-Yan process is given for demonstrating a validity of this method.

QED Radiative Correction for the Single-W Production using a Parton Shower Method

A parton shower method for the photonic radiative correction is applied to the single W-boson production processes. The energy scale for the evolution of the parton shower is determined so that the correct soft-photon emission is reproduced. Photon spectra radiated from the partons are compared with those from the exact matrix elements, and show a good agreement. Possible errors due to a inappropriate energy-scale selection or due to the ambiguity of energy scale determination are also discussed, particularly for the measurements on triple gauge-couplings.

Two-Fermion Production in Electron-Positron Collisions

This report summarizes the results of the two-fermion working group of the LEP2-MC workshop, held at CERN from 1999 to 2000. Recent developments in the theoretical calculations of the two fermion production process in the electron-positron collision at LEP2 center of the mass energies are reported. The Bhabha process and the production of muon, tau, neutrino and quark pairs is covered. On the basis of comparison of various calculations, theoretical uncertainties are estimated and compared with those needed for the final LEP2 data analysis. The subjects for the further studies are identified.

A Method to Calculate a Delta Function of the Hamiltonian by the Suzuki-Trotter Decomposition

We propose a new method to calculate expectation values of a delta function of the Hamiltonian, < Ψ\mid δ(\hat{H} - E)\mid Ψ>. Since the delta function can be replaced with a Gaussian function, we evaluate < Ψ\mid \sqrt{\fracβπ} e^{-β(\hat{H} - E)^2} \mid Ψ> with large βadopting the Suzuki-Trotter decomposition. Errors of the approximate calculations with the finite Trotter number N_t are estimated to be O(1/N_t^K) for the Kth-order decomposition. The distinct advantage of this method is that the convergence is guaranteed even when the state \mid Ψ> contains the eigenstates whose energies spread over the wide range. In this paper we give a full description of our method within the quantum mechanical physics and present the numerical results for the harmonic oscillator problems in one- and three-dimensional space.

QED Radiative Corrections to the Non-annihilation Processes Using the Structure Function and the Parton Shower

Inclusion of the QED higher order radiative corrections in the two-photon process, e+e- -> e+e- mu+mu-, is examined by means of the structure function and the parton shower. Results are compared with the exact $O(α)$ calculations and give a good agreement. These two methods should be universally applicable to any other non-annihilation processes like the single-W productions in the e+e- collisions. In this case, however, the energy scale for the evolution by the renormalization-group equation should be chosen properly depending on the dominant diagrams for the given process. A method to find the most suitable energy scale is proposed.

A QED Shower Including the Next-to-leading Logarithm Correction in e+e- Annihilation

We develop an event generator, NLL-QEDPS, based on the QED shower including the next-to-leading logarithm correction in the e^+e^- annihilation. The shower model is the Monte Carlo technique to solve the renormalization group equation so that they can calculate contributions of alpha^m log^n(S/m_e^2) for any m and n systematically. Here alpha is the QED coupling, m_e is the mass of electron and S is the square of the total energy in the e^+e^- system. While the previous QEDPS is limited to the leading logarithm approximation which includes only contributions of (alpha log(S/m_e^2))^n, the model developed here contains terms of alpha(alpha log(S/m_e^2))^n, the the next-to-leading logarithm correction. The shower model is formulated for the initial radiation in the e^+e^- annihilation. The generator based on it gives us events with q^2, which is a virtual mass squared of the virtual photon and/or Z-boson, in accuracy of 0.04%, except for small q^2/S.

An Attempt to Calculate Energy Eigenvalues in Quantum Systems of Large Sizes

We report an attempt to calculate energy eigenvalues of large quantum systems by the diagonalization of an effectively truncated Hamiltonian matrix. For this purpose we employ a specific way to systematically make a set of orthogonal states from a trial wavefunction and the Hamiltonian. In comparison with the Lanczos method, which is quite powerful if the size of the system is within the memory capacity of computers, our method requires much less memory resources at the cost of the extreme accuracy. In this paper we demonstrate that our method works well in the systems of one-dimensional frustrated spins up to 48 sites, of bosons on a chain up to 32 sites and of fermions on a ladder up to 28 sites. We will see this method enables us to study eigenvalues of these quantum systems within reasonable accuracy.

Event generator for the single- and double-photon emission associated with neutrino pair-production

A new event generator is proposed for two processes e+e- -> nu nu-bar gamma and e+e- -> nu nu-bar gamma gamma where nu includes all the neutrino species. The exact matrix elements of single- and double-photon emission, generated by the GRACE system, are convoluted with the QED parton shower(QEDPS) to deal with the initial state radiations(ISR). It is pointed out that a careful treatment is required to avoid the double counting of the radiative photons between the matrix elements and the ISR part. A detailed comparison of grc-nu-nu-gamma with the O(alpha) calculations and other similar Monte Carlo generators is discussed on the total cross section and on various distributions. It is also examined how the possible effects of the anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings can be observed.

susy23 v2.0: an Event Generator for Supersymmetric Processes at $e^+e^-$ Colliders

\susy23 is a Monte-Carlo package for generating supersymmetric (SUSY) processes at $e^+e^-$ colliders. Twenty-three types of SUSY processes with 2 or 3 final state particles at tree level are included in version 2.0. {\susy23} addresses event simulation requirements at $e^+e^-$ colliders such as LEP. Matrix elements are generated by GRACE with the helicity amplitude method for processes involving massive fermions. The phase space integration of the matrix element gives the total and differential cross sections, then unweighted events are generated. Sparticle widths and decay branching ratios are calculated. Each final state particle may then decay according to these probabilities. Spin correlations are taken into account in the decays of sparticles. Corrections of initial state radiation (ISR) are implemented in two ways, one is based on the electron structure function formalism and the second uses the parton shower algorithm called QEDPS. Parton shower and hadronization of the final quarks are performed through an interface to JETSET.

grc4f v1.0: a Four-fermion Event Generator for e+e- Collisions

grc4f is a Monte-Carlo package for generating e+e- to 4-fermion processes in the standard model. All of the 76 LEP-2 allowed fermionic final state processes evaluated at tree level are included in version 1.0. grc4f addresses event simulation requirements at e+e- colliders such as LEP and up-coming linear colliders. Most of the attractive aspects of grc4f come from its link to the GRACE system: a Feynman diagram automatic computation system. The GRACE system has been used to produce the computational code for all final states, giving a higher level of confidence in the calculation correctness. Based on the helicity amplitude calculation technique, all fermion masses can be kept finite and helicity information can be propagated down to the final state particles. The phase space integration of the matrix element gives the total and differential cross sections, then unweighted events are Generated. Initial state radiation (ISR) corrections are implemented in two ways, one is based on the electron structure function formalism and the second uses the parton shower algorithm called QEDPS. The latter can also be applied for final state radiation (FSR) though the interference with the ISR is not yet taken into account. Parton shower and hadronization of the final quarks are performed through an interface to JETSET. Coulomb correction between two intermediate W's, anomalous coupling as well as gluon contributions in the hadronic processes are also included.

Improved QEDPS for Radiative Corrections in e+e- Annihilation

The generator QEDPS, a parton shower model in QED, developed by the present authors has been improved. By a careful study on the shower algorithm it was found that some finite contributions have been missed in the original version. They are small, but cannot be neglected when the contribution of the soft photons is dominant. A method is presented to correct these finite pieces and then a new generator, improved QEDPS, is proposed, which is able to make more precise prediction for the processes observed in e+e- annihilation as far as the initial radiation is concerned.

Test of QEDPS: A Monte Carlo for the hard photon distributions in e+ e- annihilation proecss

The validity of a photon shower generator QEDPS has been examined in detail. This is formulated based on the leading-logarithmic renormalization equation for the electron structure function and it provides a photon shower along the initial e+-. The main interest in the present work is to test the reliability of the generator to describe a process accompanying hard photons which are detected. For this purpose, by taking the HZ production as the basic reaction, the total cross section and some distributions of the hard photons are compared between two cases that these photons come from either those generated by QEDPS or the hard process e+e- -> H Z gamma gamma. The comparison performed for the single and the double hard photon has shown a satisfactory agreement which demonstrated that the model is self-consistent.

A Parton Shower Model for Hadronic Two-Photon Process in e^+e^- Scatterings

A new model of QCD parton shower is proposed which is dedicated to two-photon process in $e^+ e^-$ scattering. When hadron jets are produced, the photon may resolve into quark-antiquark pairs so that the structure functions of the photon should be introduced. Based on the Altarelli-Parisi equation for these functions, an algorithm is formulated that allows us to construct a model for parton showers for the photon. Our model consists of two parts, one of which describes the deep inelastic scattering of the photon and the other one the scattering of two quasi-real photons. Using the model some results are presented on parton distributions and jet production.

Monte Carlo Approach to Radiative Corrections in Bhabha Scattering

A new Monte Carlo model is proposed for radiative corrections to Bhabha scattering by extending QEDPS developed for multi-photon emission in muon pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. This is the QED version of the model known as parton shower in QCD. The main difference between muon pair production and Bhabha scattering is that the latter cross section shows the singularity of $1/t^2$. A shower algorithm is constructed on the radiator formalism modified in a suitable form for this singularity. Some results of the model are presented and compared with $O(α)$ corrections.
