High-pressure study of superconducting and non-superconducting single crystals of the same nominal composition Rb0.8Fe2Se2

Two single crystalline samples with the same nominal composition of Rb0.8Fe2Se2 prepared via slightly different precursor routes under the same thermal processing conditions were investigated at ambient and high pressures. One sample was found superconducting with a Tc of ~31 K without the previously reported resistivity-hump and the other was unexpectedly found to be a narrow-gap semiconductor. While the high pressure data can be understood in terms of pressure-induced variation in doping, the detailed doping effect on superconductivity is yet to be determined.

The unusual phase diagram of CeNiGe2

The heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeNiGe2 was investigated under pressure by resistivity and ac calorimetry up to 4 GPa and down to 40 mK. The two magnetic transitions found in both resistivity and specific heat at 0.1 GPa at T_N1=3.95 and T_{N2}=3.21 K are replaced by a single one at 0.7 GPa and 2.81 K. Increasing pressure initially reduces this further, however at about 1.7 GPa a new transition appears, accompanied by a marked change in the pressure dependence of the ordering temperatures, the temperature dependence of the resistivity, and the residual resistivity. There are signs that this new transition has some first order character. The phase diagram of CeNiGe2 bears little resemblance to the Doniach phase diagram widely used to classify heavy fermion compounds.

High pressure effects on the superconductivity of beta-pyrochlore oxides AOs2O6

High pressure effects on the superconducting transitions of beta-pyrochlore superconductors AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K) are studied by measuring resistivity under high pressures up to 10 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature Tc first increases with increasing pressure in all the compounds and then exhibits a broad maximum at 7.6 K (6 GPa), 8.2 K (2 GPa) and 10 K (0.6 GPa) for A = Cs, Rb and K, respectviely. Finally, the superconductivity is suppressed completely at a critical pressure near 7 GPa and 6 GPa for A = Rb and K and probably above 10 GPa for A = Cs. Characteristic changes in the coefficinet A of the T2 term in resistivity and residual resistivity are observed, both of which are synchronized with the corresponding change in Tc. It is suggested that electron correlations and certain quantum fluctuations play important roles in the occurrence or suppression of superconductivity in the beta-pyrochlore oxides.

Power of Supersymmetry in D-particle Dynamics

A new systematic method is developed to study to what extent the symmetry requirements alone, above all the invariance under 16 supersymmetries (SUSY), determine the completely off-shell effective action $Γ$ of a D-particle, i.e. without imposing any restrictions on its position $r^m(τ)$ and spin $θ_α(τ)$. Our method consists of (i) writing down the proper closure relations for general SUSY transformations $δ_ε$ (which necessarily involves $Γ$ itself) together with the invariance condition $δ_εΓ=0$ (ii) and solving this coupled system of functional differential equations for $δ_ε$ and $Γ$ simultaneously, modulo field redefinitions, in a consistent derivative expansion scheme. Our analysis is facilitated by a novel classification scheme introduced for the terms in $Γ$. At order 2 and 4, although no assumption is made on the underlying theory, we reproduce the effective action previously obtained at the tree and the 1-loop level in Matrix theory respectively (modulo two constants), together with the quantum-corrected SUSY transformations which close properly. This constitutes a complete unambiguous proof of off-shell non-renormalization theorems.

Fully Off-shell Effective Action and its Supersymmetry in Matrix Theory II

In a previous work, we computed the fully off-shell effective action $Γ$ and the corresponding quantum-corrected supersymmetry (SUSY) transformation operator $δ_ε$ for the so-called source-probe configuration in Matrix theory at one loop at order 4 in the derivative expansion, and showed that they satisfy the SUSY Ward identity $δ_εΓ=0$. In this article, starting from the most general form of $Γ$, we demonstrate that, conversely, given such $δ_ε$ the SUSY Ward identity determines $Γ$ uniquely to the order specified above. Our demonstration does not require the explicit knowledge of the quantum-corrected supersymmetry transformation and hence strongly suggests that the uniqueness property would persist to all orders in perturbation theory.

Pressure-Temperature Phase Diagram of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in CeRhIn5 and CeIn3 : In-NQR Study under Pressure

We report the novel pressure($P$) - temperature($T$) phase diagram of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$ revealed by the $^{115}$In nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation ($T_1$) measurement. In the itinerant magnet CeRhIn$_5$, we found that the Néel temperature $T_N$ is reduced at $P \geq$ 1.23 GPa with an emergent pseudogap behavior. In CeIn$_3$, the localized magnetic character is robust against the application of pressure up to $P \sim$ 1.9 GPa, beyond which the system evolves into an itinerant regime in which the resistive superconducting phase emerges. We discuss the relationship between the phase diagram and the magnetic fluctuations.

A Theorem on the Power of Supersymmetry in Matrix Theory

For the so-called source-probe configuration in Matrix theory, we prove the following theorem concerning the power of supersymmetry (SUSY): Let $δ$ be a quantum-corrected effective SUSY transformation operator expandable in powers of the coupling constant $g$ as $δ= \sum_{n\ge 0} g^{2n} δ^{(n)}$, where $δ^{(0)}$ is of the tree-level form. Then, apart from an overall constant, the SUSY Ward identity $δΓ=0$ determines the off-shell effective action $Γ$ uniquely to arbitrary order of perturbation theory, provided that the $ SO(9)$ symmetry is preserved. Our proof depends only on the properties of the tree-level SUSY transformation laws and does not require the detailed knowledge of quantum corrections.

Fully Off-shell Effective Action and its Supersymmetry in Matrix Theory

As a step toward clarification of the power of supersymmetry (SUSY) in Matrix theory, a complete calculation, including all the spin effects, is performed of the effective action of a probe D-particle, moving along an arbitrary trajectory in interaction with a large number of coincident source D-particles, at one loop at order 4 in the derivative expansion. Furthermore, exploiting the SUSY Ward identity developed previously, the quantum-corrected effective supersymmetry transformation laws are obtained explicitly to the relevant order and are used to verify the SUSY-invariance of the effective action. Assuming that the agreement with 11-dimensional supergravity persists, our result can be regarded as a prediction for supergravity calculation, which, yet unavailable, is known to be highly non-trivial.

On the Supersymmetry and Gauge Structure of Matrix Theory

Supersymmetric Ward identity for the low energy effective action in the standard background gauge is derived for {\it arbitrary} trajectories of supergravitons in Matrix Theory. In our formalism, the quantum-corrected supersymmetry transformation laws of the supergravitons are directly identified in closed form, which exhibit an intricate interplay between supersymmetry and gauge (BRST) symmetry. As an application, we explicitly compute the transformation laws for the source-probe configuration at 1-loop and confirm that supersymmetry fixes the form of the action completely, including the normalization, to the lowest order in the derivative expansion.
