On the Origin of Lyman-$α$ Blobs at High Redshift: Kinematic Evidence for a Hyperwind Galaxy at z = 3.1

We present deep optical spectroscopy of an extended Ly$α$ emission-line blob located in an over-dense region at redshift $z \approx 3.1$; `blob 1' of Steidel et al. (2000). The origin of such Ly$α$ blobs has been debated for some time; two of the most plausible models are (1) that it comes from a dust-enshrouded, extreme starburst galaxy with a large-scale galactic outflow (superwind/hyperwind) or (2) that it is the cooling radiation of proto-galaxies in dark matter halos. Examination of the kinematic properties of the Ly$α$ emission-line gas should allow us to determine its nature. With this motivation, we performed optical spectroscopy of `blob 1' using the Subaru Telescope, and found that its kinematic properties can be well explained in terms of superwind activity.

The Halpha Luminosity Function and Star Formation Rate at z~0.24 Based on Subaru Deep Imaging Data

We have carried out a deep imaging survey for H$α$ emitting galaxies at $z\approx$0.24 using a narrowband filter tuned with the redshifted line. The total sky area covered is 706 arcmin$^2$ within a redshift range from 0.234 to 0.252 ($δz$=0.018). This corresponds to a volume of 3.9$\times10^3$ Mpc$^3$ when $Ω_{\rm matter}=0.3$, $Ω_Λ=0.7$, and $H_{\mathrm{0}}$=70 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ are adopted. We obtain a sample of 348 H$α$ emitting galaxies whose observed emission-line equivalent widths are greater than 12 Å. We find an extinction-corrected H$α$ luminosity density of $10^{39.65^{+0.08}_{-0.12}}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. Using the Kennicutt relation between the H$α$ luminosity and star formation rate, the star formation rate density in the covered volume is estimated as $0.036^{+0.006}_{-0.012}$ $M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. This value is higher by a factor of 3 than the local SFR density.

The Discovery of a Very Narrow-Line Star Forming Obat a Redshift of 5.66ject

We report on the discovery of a very narrow-line star forming object beyond redshift of 5. Using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope together with a narrow-passband filter centered at $λ_{\rm c}$ = 8150 Åwith passband of $Δλ$ = 120 Å, we have obtained a very deep image of the field surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04$-$012502.2 at a redshift of 5.74. Comparing this image with optical broad-band images, we have found an object with a very strong emission line. Our follow-up optical spectroscopy has revealed that this source is at a redshift of $z=5.655\pm0.002$, forming stars at a rate $\sim 13 ~ h_{0.7}^{-2} ~ M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Remarkably, the velocity dispersion of Ly$α$-emitting gas is only 22 km s$^{-1}$. Since a blue half of the Ly$α$ emission could be absorbed by neutral hydrogen gas, perhaps in the system, a modest estimate of the velocity dispersion may be $\gtrsim$ 44 km s$^{-1}$. Together with a linear size of 7.7 $h_{0.7}^{-1}$ kpc, we estimate a lower limit of the dynamical mass of this object to be $\sim 2 \times 10^9 M_\odot$. It is thus suggested that LAE J1044$-$0123 is a star-forming dwarf galaxy (i.e., a subgalactic object or a building block) beyond redshift 5 although we cannot exclude a possibility that most Ly$α$ emission is absorbed by the red damping wing of neutral intergalactic matter.

A New High-Redshift Lyman alpha Emitter: Possible Superwind Galaxy at z = 5.69

During the course of our deep optical imaging survey for Ly alpha emitters at z approximately 5.7 in the field around the z=5.74 quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2, we have found a candidate strong emission-line source. Follow-up optical spectroscopy shows that the emission line profile of this object is asymmetric, showing excess red-wing emission. These properties are consistent with an identification of Ly alpha emission at a redshift of z=5.687 +/- 0.002. The observed broad line width, Delta V_{FWHM} ~= 340 km s^{-1} and excess red-wing emission also suggest that this object hosts a galactic superwind.

A Multi-band Photometric Study of Tidal Debris in A Compact Group of Galaxies: Seyfert's Sextet

In order to investigate the properties of the prominent tidal debris feature extending to the northeast of the compact group of galaxies Seyfert's Sextet, we analyzed multi-band (U, B, V, VR, R, I, J, H and K') photometric imaging data and obtained the following results: 1) The radial surface brightness distribution of this tidal debris in Seyfert's Sextet (TDSS) in each band appears to be well approximated by an exponential profile. 2) The observed B-V color of TDSS is similar to those of dwarf elliptical galaxies in nearby clusters. 3) Comparing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of TDSS with theoretical photometric evolution models and with the SED of the stars in the outer part of HCG 79b, we find that its SED is comparable to that of a $\sim$ 10 Gyr-old stellar population with solar metallicity, similar to the stellar population in the outer part of HCG 79b. This suggests that TDSS consists of stars that may have been liberated from HCG 79b by strong galaxy interactions, not a pre-existing dwarf galaxy previously thought.

The Narrow-Line Region of Seyfert Galaxies: Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies versus Broad-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

It is known that the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the nuclear radiation of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) has different shapes with respect to that of ordinary broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s), particularly in wavelengths of X-ray. This may cause some differences in the ionization degree and the temperature of gas in narrow-line regions (NLRs) between NLS1s and BLS1s. This paper aims to examine whether or not there are such differences in the physical conditions of NLR gas between them. For this purpose, we have compiled the emission-line ratios of 36 NLS1s and 83 BLS1s from the literature. Comparing these two samples, we have found that the line ratios of [O {\sc i}]$λ$6300/[O {\sc iii}]$λ$5007 and [O {\sc iii}]$λ$4363/[O {\sc iii}]$λ$5007, which represent the ionization degree and the gas temperature respectively, are statistically indistinguishable between NLS1s and BLS1s. Based on new photoionization model calculations, we show that these results are not inconsistent with the difference of the SED between them. The influence of the difference of SEDs on the highly ionized emission lines is also briefly discussed.

Deep Optical Imaging of A Compact Group of Galaxies, Seyfert's Sextet

In order to investigate the dynamical status of Seyfert's Sextet (SS), we have obtained a deep optical ($VR+I$) image of this group. Our image shows that a faint envelope, down to a surface brightness $μ_{\rm optical}$(AB) $\simeq 27$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, surrounds the member galaxies. This envelope is irregular in shape. It is likely that this shape is attributed either to recent-past or to on-going galaxy interactions in SS. If the member galaxies have experienced a number of mutual interactions over a long timescale, the shape of the envelope should be rounder. Therefore, the irregular-shaped morphology suggests that SS is in an early phase of dynamical interaction among the member galaxies. It is interesting to note that the soft X-ray image obtained with ROSAT (Pildis et al. 1995) is significantly similar in morphology. We discuss the possible future evolution of SS briefly.

Massive random matrix ensembles at beta = 1 & 4 : QCD in three dimensions

The zero momentum sectors in effective theories of three dimensional QCD coupled to pseudoreal (two colors) and real (adjoint) quarks in a classically parity-invariant manner have alternative descriptions in terms of orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, we compute finite-volume QCD partition functions and correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues in a presence of finite quark masses of the order of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue. These novel correlation functions, expressed in terms of quaternion determinants, are reduced to conventional results for the Gaussian ensembles in the quenched limit.

How Do We See the Nuclear Region (r < 0.1 pc) of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies?

We propose two statistical tests to investigate how we see the nuclear region (r < 0.1 pc) of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). 1) The high-ionization nuclear emission-line region (HINER) test: Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s) have systematically higher flux ratios of [Fe VII] lambda 6087 to [O III] lambda 5007 than Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s). This is interpreted in that a significant part of the [Fe VII] lambda 6087 emission arises from the inner walls of dusty tori that cannot be seen in S2s (Murayama & Taniguchi 1998a,b). 2) The mid-infrared test: S1s have systematically higher flux ratios of the L band (3.5 micrometer) to the IRAS 25 micrometer band than S2s. This is also interpreted in that a significant part of the L band emission arises from the inner walls of dusty tori, because the tori are optically thick enough to absorb the L band emission if the tori are viewed nearly edge on (Murayama et al. 2000). Applying these tests to a sample of NLS1s, we have found that the NLS1s possibly have nearly the same properties as S1s.

Massive chiral random matrix ensembles at beta = 1 & 4 : Finite-volume QCD partition functions

In a deep-infrared (ergodic) regime, QCD coupled to massive pseudoreal and real quarks are described by chiral orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, general expressions for the QCD partition functions are derived in terms of microscopically rescaled mass variables. In limited cases, correlation functions of Dirac eigenvalues and distributions of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue are given as ratios of these partition functions. When all masses are degenerate, our results reproduce the known expressions for the partition functions of zero-dimensional sigma models.

Massive chiral random matrix ensembles at beta = 1 & 4 : QCD Dirac operator spectra

The zero momentum sectors in effective theories of QCD coupled to pseudoreal (two colors) and real (adjoint) quarks have alternative descriptions in terms of chiral orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, we compute correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues within a sector with an arbitrary topological charge in a presence of finite quark masses of the order of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue. These novel correlation functions, expressed in terms of Pfaffians, interpolate between known results for the chiral and quenched limits as quark masses vary.

Classical skew orthogonal polynomials and random matrices

Skew orthogonal polynomials arise in the calculation of the $n$-point distribution function for the eigenvalues of ensembles of random matrices with orthogonal or symplectic symmetry. In particular, the distribution functions are completely determined by a certain sum involving the skew orthogonal polynomials. In the cases that the eigenvalue probability density function involves a classical weight function, explicit formulas for the skew orthogonal polynomials are given in terms of related orthogonal polynomials, and the structure is used to give a closed form expression for the sum. This theory treates all classical cases on an equal footing, giving formulas applicable at once to the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi cases.

Correlations for the orthogonal-unitary and symplectic-unitary transitions at the hard and soft edges

For the orthogonal-unitary and symplectic-unitary transitions in random matrix theory, the general parameter dependent distribution between two sets of eigenvalues with two different parameter values can be expressed as a quaternion determinant. For the parameter dependent Gaussian and Laguerre ensembles the matrix elements of the determinant are expressed in terms of corresponding skew-orthogonal polynomials, and their limiting value for infinite matrix dimension are computed in the vicinity of the soft and hard edges respectively. A connection formula relating the distributions at the hard and soft edge is obtained, and a universal asymptotic behaviour of the two point correlation is identified.

Correlations for the Dyson Brownian motion model with Poisson initial conditions

The circular Dyson Brownian motion model refers to the stochastic dynamics of the log-gas on a circle. It also specifies the eigenvalues of certain parameter-dependent ensembles of unitary random matrices. This model is considered with the initial condition that the particles are non-interacting (Poisson statistics). Jack polynomial theory is used to derive a simple exact expression for the density-density correlation with the position of one particle specified in the initial state, and the position of one particle specified at time $τ$, valid for all $β> 0$. The same correlation with two particles specified in the initial state is also derived exactly, and some special cases of the theoretical correlations are illustrated by comparison with the empirical correlations calculated from the eigenvalues of certain parameter-dependent Gaussian random matrices. Application to fluctuation formulas for time displaced linear statistics in made.
