Status of the International Linear Collider

This paper is not a proposal for a CERN future project but provides information on the International Linear Collider (ILC) considered for Japan in order to facilitate the European Strategy discussion in a global context. It describes progress to date, ongoing engineering studies, updated cost estimate for the machine at $\sqrt{s}=250~\rm GeV$ and the situation in Japan. The physics of the ILC is not presented here, but jointly for all Linear Collider projects in a separate document ``A Linear Collider Vision for the Future of Particle Physics'' submitted for the forthcoming European Strategy deliberations.

European Strategy for Particle Physics -- Accelerator R&D Roadmap

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation.

The nylon balloon for xenon loaded liquid scintillator in KamLAND-Zen 800 neutrinoless double-beta decay search experiment

The KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe by using $^{136}$Xe-loaded liquid scintillator. The liquid scintillator is enclosed inside a balloon made of thin, transparent, low-radioactivity film that we call Inner Balloon (IB). The IB, apart from guaranteeing the liquid containment, also allows to minimize the background from cosmogenic muon-spallation products and $^{8}$B solar neutrinos. Indeed these events could contribute to the total counts in the region of interest around the Q-value of the double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe. In this paper, we present an overview of the IB and describe the various steps of its commissioning minimizing the radioactive contaminations, from the material selection, to the fabrication of the balloon and its installation inside the KamLAND detector. Finally, we show the impact of the IB on the KamLAND background as measured by the KamLAND detector itself.

Physics Opportunities with the FCC-hh Injectors

In this chapter we explore a few examples of physics opportunities using the existing chain of accelerators at CERN, including potential upgrades. In this context the LHC ring is also considered as a part of the injector system. The objective is to find examples that constitute sensitive probes of New Physics that ideally cannot be done elsewhere or can be done significantly better at theCERN accelerator complex. Some of these physics opportunities may require a more flexible injector complex with additional functionality than that just needed to inject protons into the FCC-hh at the right energy, intensity and bunch structure. Therefore it is timely to discuss these options concurrently with the conceptual design of the FCC-hh injector system.

Limits on Majoron-emitting double-beta decays of Xe-136 in the KamLAND-Zen experiment

We present limits on Majoron-emitting neutrinoless double-beta decay modes based on an exposure of 112.3 days with 125 kg of Xe-136. In particular, a lower limit on the ordinary (spectral index n = 1) Majoron-emitting decay half-life of Xe-136 is obtained as T_{1/2}^{0νχ^{0}} > 2.6 x 10^{24} yr at 90% C.L., a factor of five more stringent than previous limits. The corresponding upper limit on the effective Majoron-neutrino coupling, using a range of available nuclear matrix calculations, is < (0.8 - 1.6) x 10^{-5}. This excludes a previously unconstrained region of parameter space and strongly limits the possible contribution of ordinary Majoron emission modes to 0νββdecay for neutrino masses in the inverted hierarchy scheme.

Low-temperature specific heat for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders in CaRu1-xMnxO3

Low-temperature specific heat of CaRu1-xMnxO3 was measured to clarify the role of d electrons in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders observed above x=0.2. Specific heat divided by temperature C_p/T is found to roughly follow a T^2 function, and relatively large magnitudes of electronic specific heat coefficient gamma were obtained in wide x range. In particular, gamma is unchanged from the value at x=0 (84 mJ/K^2 mol) in the paramagnetic state for x<=0.1, but linearly reduced with increasing x above x= 0.2. These features of gamma strongly suggest that itinerant d electrons are tightly coupled with the evolution of magnetic orders in small and intermediate Mn concentrations.

Neutron Scattering Study on Commensurate and Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Phases in UPd2Si2 under Uniaxial Stress

The nature of competition between incommensurate (IC) and commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic (AF) orders in UPd2Si2 was investigated by performing elastic neutron scattering experiments under uniaxial stress sigma. It is found that applying sigma along tetragonal [010] direction reduces the IC-AF order, and then stabilizes the C-AF order. The transition temperature from IC- to C-AF phases T_Nl is enhanced from 109 K (sigma=0) to 112.5 K (0.8 GPa), while the onset of IC-AF transition T_Nh is unchanged from 132 K under sigma. In addition, c-axis component q_z of the IC-AF modulation at 115 K also increases from 0.736 (sigma=0) to 0.747 (0.8 GPa). The magnitude of C-AF moment at 5 K is estimated to be 2.2 mu_B/U in the entire sigma range presently investigated (sigma <= 0.8 GPa). These features are similar to those obtained from the investigations using hydrostatic pressure p, indicating that applications of p and sigma||[010] commonly induce the crystal strains which inherently affect a delicate balance of frustrated magnetic interactions between uranium 5f moments.

A Scintillating Fiber Tracker With SiPM Readout

We present a prototype for the first tracking detector consisting of 250 micron thin scintillating fibers and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. The detector has a modular design, each module consists of a mechanical support structure of 10mm Rohacell foam between two 100 micron thin carbon fiber skins. Five layers of scintillating fibers are glued to both top and bottom of the support structure. SiPM arrays with a channel pitch of 250 micron are placed in front of the fibers. We show the results of the first module prototype using multiclad fibers of types Bicron BCF-20 and Kuraray SCSF-81M that were read out by novel 32-channel SiPM arrays from FBK-irst/INFN Perugia as well as 32-channel SiPM arrays produced by Hamamatsu. A spatial resolution of 88 micron +/- 6 micron at an average yield of 10 detected photons per minimal ionizig particle has been achieved.

Future Prospects for Studying CP Violation in B-Meson Decays

Experimental prospects for observing CP violation in B-meson decays are reviewed. Comparisons are made for various options: experiments at $e^+ e^-$ B-Meson Factories, HERA and the TEVATRON will produce results in near future. They will have a good chance to discover CP violation in B-meson decays. On a longer time scale, experiments at the LHC will aim at accurate measurements to make a precision test of the standard model in CP violation.
