Magnetic, electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and thermopower anomalies in CeCuAs2

The results of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity ($ρ$), heat-capacity (C) and thermopower (S) measurements on CeCuAs2, forming in ZrCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, are reported. Our investigations reveal that Ce is trivalent and there is no clear evidence for long range magnetic ordering down to 45 mK. The $ρ$ behavior is notable in the sense that (i) the temperature (T)-coefficient of $ρ$ is negative in the entire range of measurement (45 mK to 300 K) with large values of $ρ$, while S behavior is typical of metallic Kondo lattices, and (ii) $ρ$ is proportional to T-0.6 at low temperatures, without any influence on the exponent by the application of a magnetic field, which does not seem to classify this compound into hither-to-known non-Fermi liquid (NFL) systems. In contrast to the logarithmic increase known for NFL systems, C/T measured down to 0.5 K exhibits a fall below 2 K. The observed properties of this compound are unusual among Ce systems.

Evidence for Narrow S=+1 Baryon Resonance in Photo-production from Neutron

The gamma n -> K+ K- n reaction on 12C has been studied by measuring both K+ and K- at forward angles. A sharp baryon resonance peak was observed at 1.54 +- 0.01 GeV with a width smaller than 25 MeV and a Gaussian significance of 4.6 sigma. The strangeness quantum number (S) of the baryon resonance is +1. It can be interpreted as a molecular meson-baryon resonance or alternatively as an exotic 5-quark state (uudd{s_bar}) that decays into a K+ and a neutron. The resonance is consistent with the lowest member of an anti-decuplet of baryons predicted by the chiral soliton model.

Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)Sigma0 reactions at Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV

Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)sigma0 reactions are measured for the first time for Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV and 0.6<cos(theta_cm(K+))<1.0 by using linearly polarized photons at the Laser-Electron-Photon facility at SPring-8 (LEPS). The observed asymmetries are positive and gradually increase with rising photon energy. The data are not consistent with theoretical predictions based on tree-level effective Lagrangian approaches. Including the new results in the development of the models is, therefore, crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism and to test the presence of baryon resonances which are predicted in quark models but are sofar undiscovered.

The Metal-Insulator Transition in Y1-xCaxTiO3 Caused by Phase Separation

In order to explore the origin of the Metal-Insulator (M-I) transition, the precise crystal structures of the hole-doped Mott insulator system, Y1-XCaXTiO3 (x=0.37, 0.39 and 0.41), are studied for the temperature range between 20K and 300K by the synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray powder diffraction. For both Y0.63Ca0.37TiO3 and Y0.61Ca0.39TiO3 compositions, the orthorhombic (Pbnm) - monoclinic (P21/n) structural phase transition occurs at around 230K, which is much higher than their own M-I transition temperatures, i.e. 60K and 130K, respectively. For these compositions, the significant phase separation (low-temperature orthorhombic + monoclinic) is also found in the vicinity of the M-I transition temperature. On the other hand, Y0.59Ca0.41TiO3, which dose not exhibit M-I transition and preserve a metallic behavior down to 1.5K, is in two phases state from 20K to 300K. It is concluded that the existence of the phase separation causes the M-I transition in Y1-xCaxTiO3, and the low-temperature orthorhombic phase contributes to the metallic property of this system.

Search for the Decay K+ -> pi+ pi0 nu nubar

The first search for the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar has been performed with the E787 detector at BNL. Based on zero events observed in the kinematical search region defined by 90 MeV/c < P_{pi^+} < 188 MeV/c and 135 MeV < E_{pi^0} < 180 MeV, an upper limit B(K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar) < 4.3 x 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level is established.

Studies of 100 um-thick silicon strip detector with analog VLSI readout

We evaluate the performances of a 100 um-thick silicon strip detector (SSD) with a 300 MeV proton beam and a 90Sr beta-ray source. Signals from the SSD have been read out using a VLSI chip. Common-mode noise, signal separation efficiency and energy resolution are compared with those for the SSD's with a thickness of 300 um and 500 um. Energy resolution for minimum ionizing particles (MIP's) is improved by fitting the non-constant component in a common-mode noise with a linear function.

Observation of the Decay K^+ --> pi^+ gamma gamma

The first observation of the decay K^+ --> pi^+ gamma gamma is reported. A total of 31 events was observed with an estimated background of 5.1 +- 3.3 events in the pi+ momentum range from 100 MeV/c to 180 MeV/c. The corresponding partial branching ratio, B(K+ -> pi+ gamma gamma, 100 MeV/c < P_pi^+ < 180 MeV/c), is (6.0 +- 1.5 (stat) +- 0.7 (sys)) x 10^{-7}. No K^+ --> pi^+ gamma gamma decay was observed in the pi^+ momentum region greater than 215 MeV/c. The observed pi^+ momentum spectrum is compared with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory.

Observation of the Decay K+ --> pi+ mu+ mu-

We have observed the rare decay K+ --> pi+ mu+ mu- and measured the branching ratio Gamma(K+ --> pi+ mu+ mu-)/Gamma(K+ --> all) = (5.0 +/- 0.4 (stat.) +/- 0.7 (sys.) +/- 0.6 (theor.)) x 10^{-8}. We compare this result with predictions from chiral perturbation theory and estimates based on the decay K+ --> pi+ e+ e-.

Evolution of Molecular Abundance in Protoplanetary Disks

We investigate the evolution of molecular abundance in quiescent protoplanetary disks which are presumed to be around weak-line T Tauri stars. In the region of surface density less than $10^2$ g cm$^{-2}$ (distance from the star $\gtrsim 10$ AU in the minimum- mass solar nebula), cosmic rays are barely attenuated even in the midplane of the disk and produce chemically active ions such as He$^+$ and H$_{3}^+$. Through reactions with these ions CO and N$_2$ are finally transformed into CO$_2$, NH$_3$, and HCN. In the region where the temperature is low enough for these products to freeze onto grains, considerable amount of carbon and nitrogen is locked up in the ice mantle and is depleted from the gas phase in a time scale $\lesssim 3\times 10^6$ yr. Oxidized (CO$_2$) ice and reduced (NH$_3$ and hydrocarbon) ice naturally coexist in this part of the disk. The molecular abundance both in the gas phase and in ice mantle varies significantly with the distance from the central star.

Search for the Decay $K^+ \to π^+ ν\overlineν$

An upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay $K^+ \! \rightarrow \! π^+ ν\overlineν$ is set at $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90\% C.L. using pions in the kinematic region $214~{\rm MeV}/c < P_π< 231~{\rm MeV}/c$. An upper limit of $5.2 \times 10^{-10}$ is found on the branching ratio for decays $K^+ \! \rightarrow \! π^+ X^0$, where $X^0$ is any massless, weakly interacting neutral particle. Limits are also set for cases where $M_{X^0}>0$.
