Collective excitations in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate collective excitations of density fluctuations and a dynamic density structure factor in a mixture of Bose and Fermi gases in a normal phase. With decreasing temperature, we find that the frequency of the collective excitation deviates from that of the hydrodynamic sound mode. Even at temperature much lower than the Fermi temperature, the collective mode frequency does not reach the collisionless limit analogous to zero sound in a Fermi gas, because of collisions between bosons and fermions.

Quantum Dynamics of Atom-molecule BECs in a Double-Well Potential

We investigate the dynamics of two-component Bose-Josephson junction composed of atom-molecule BECs. Within the semiclassical approximation, the multi-degree of freedom of this system permits chaotic dynamics, which does not occur in single-component Bose-Josephson junctions. By investigating the level statistics of the energy spectra using the exact diagonalization method, we evaluate whether the dynamics of the system is periodic or non-periodic within the semiclassical approximation. Additionally, we compare the semiclassical and full-quantum dynamics.

Adiabatic Loading of Cold Bosons in Three-Dimensional Optical Lattices and Superfluid-Normal Phase Transition

We investigate the effects of the adiabatic loading of optical lattices to the temperature by applying the mean-field approximation to the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at finite temperatures. We compute the lattice-height dependence of the isentropic curves for the given initial temperatures in case of the homogeneous system i.e., neglecting the trapping potential. Taking the unit of temperatures as the recoil energy, the adiabatic cooling/heating through superfluid (SF) - normal (N) phase transition is clearly understood. It is found that the cooling occurs in SF phase while the heating occurs in N phase and the efficiency of adibatic cooling/heating is higher at higher temperatures. We also explain how its behavior can be understood from the lattice-hight dependence of dispersion relation in each phase. Furthermore, the connection of the adiabatic heating/cooling between the cases with/without the trapping potential is discussed.

Vortex Lattice Structures of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Rotating Triangular Lattice Potential

We study the vortex pinning effect in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the presence of a rotating lattice potential by numerically solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We consider a triangular lattice potential created by blue-detuned laser beams. By rotating the lattice potential, we observe a transition from the Abrikosov vortex lattice to the pinned vortex lattice. We investigate the transition of the vortex lattice structure by changing conditions such as angular velocity, strength, and lattice constant of a rotating lattice potential. Our simulation results clearly show that the lattice potential has a strong vortex pinning effect when the vortex density coincides with the density of the pinning points.

Adiabatic Phase Diagram of an Ultracold Atomic Fermi Gas with a Feshbach Resonance

We determine the adiabatic phase diagram of a resonantly-coupled system of Fermi atoms and Bose molecules confined in the harmonic trap by using the local density approximation. The adiabatic phase diagram shows the fermionic condensate fraction composed of condensed molecules and Cooper pair atoms. The key idea of our work is conservation of entropy through the adiabatic process, extending the study of Williams et al. [Williams et al., New J. Phys. 6, 123 (2004)] for an ideal gas mixture to include the resonant interaction in a mean-field theory. We also calculate the molecular conversion efficiency as a function of initial temperature. Our work helps to understand recent experiments on the BCS-BEC crossover, in terms of the initial temperature measured before a sweep of the magnetic field.

Bose-Condensed Gases in a 1D Optical Lattice at Finite Temperatures

We study equilibrium properties of Bose-Condensed gases in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice at finite temperatures. We assume that an additional harmonic confinement is highly anisotropic, in which the confinement in the radial directions is much tighter than in the axial direction. We derive a quasi-1D model of the Gross-Pitaeavkill equation and the Bogoliubov equations, and numerically solve these equations to obtain the condensate fraction as a function of the temperature.

Laser probing of single-particle energy gap of a Bose gas in an optical lattice in the Mott insulator phase

We study single-particle excitations in the Mott insulator phase of a Bose gas in an optical lattice. The characteristic feature of the single-particle spectrum in the Mott insulator phase is the existence of an energy gap between the particle and hole excitations. We show that this energy gap can be directly probed by an output coupling experiment. We apply the general expression for the output current derived by Luxat and Griffin, which is given in terms of the single-particle Green's functions of a trapped Bose gas, to the Mott insulator phase using the Bose-Hubbard model. We find that the energy spectrum of the momentum-resolved output current exhibits two characteristic peaks corresponding to the particle and hole excitations, and thus it can be used to detect the transition point from the Mott insulator to superfluid phase where the energy gap disappears.

Kinetic Theory of a Spin-1/2 Bose-Condensed Gas

We derive a kinetic theory for a spin-1/2 Bose-condensed gas of two-level atoms at finite temperatures. The condensate dynamics is described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the two-component spinor order parameter, which includes the interaction with the uncondensed fraction. The noncondensate atoms are described by a quantum kinetic equation, which is a generalization of the spin kinetic equation for spin-polarized quantum gases to include couplings to the condensate degree of freedom. The kinetic equation is used to derive hydrodynamic equations for the noncondensate spin density. The condensate and noncondensate spins are coupled directly through the exchange mean field. Collisions between the condensate and noncondensate atoms give rise to an additional contribution to the spin diffusion relaxation rate. In addition, they give rise to mutual relaxation of the condensate and noncondensate due to lack of local equilibrium between the two components.

Atom-molecule equilibration in a degenerate Fermi gas with resonant interactions

We present a nonequilibrium kinetic theory describing atom-molecule population dynamics in a two-component Fermi gas with a Feshbach resonance. Key collision integrals emerge that govern the relaxation of the atom-molecule mixture to chemical and thermal equilibrium. Our focus is on the pseudogap regime where molecules form above the superfluid transition temperature. In this regime, we formulate a simple model for the atom-molecule population dynamics. The model predicts the saturation of molecule formation that has been observed in recent experiments, and indicates that a dramatic enhancement of the atom-molecule conversion efficiency occurs at low temperatures.

Linear spin waves in a trapped Bose gas

An ultra-cold Bose gas of two-level atoms can be thought of as a spin-1/2 Bose gas. It supports spin-wave collective modes due to the exchange mean field. Such collective spin oscillations have been observed in recent experiments at JILA with ${}^{87}$Rb atoms confined in a harmonic trap. We present a theory of the spin-wave collective modes based on the moment method for trapped gases. In the collisionless and hydrodynamic limits, we derive analytic expressions for the frequencies and damping rates of modes with dipole and quadrupole symmetry. We find that the frequency for a given mode is given by a temperature independent function of the peak density $n$, and falls off as $1/n$. We also find that, to a very good approximation, excitations in the radial and axial directions are decoupled. We compare our model to the numerical integration of a one dimensional version of the kinetic equation and find very good qualitative agreement. The damping rates, however, show the largest deviation for intermediate densities, where one expects Landau damping -- which is unaccounted for in our moment approach -- to play a significant role.

Spatial resolution of spin waves in an ultra-cold gas

We present the first spatially resolved images of spin waves in a gas. The complete longitudinal and transverse spin field as a function of time and space is reconstructed. Frequencies and damping rates for a standing-wave mode are extracted and compared with theory.

Longitudinal spin waves in a dilute Bose gas

We present a kinetic theory for a dilute noncondensed Bose gas of two-level atoms that predicts the transient spin segregation observed in a recent experiment. The underlying mechanism driving spin currents in the gas is due to a mean field effect arising from the quantum interference between the direct and exchange scattering of atoms in different spin states. We numerically solve the spin Boltzmann equation, using a one dimensional model, and find excellent agreement with experimental data.

Temperature-dependent relaxation times in a trapped Bose-condensed gas

Explicit expressions for all the transport coefficients have recently been found for a trapped Bose condensed gas at finite temperatures. These transport coefficients are used to define the characteristic relaxation times, which determine the crossover between the mean-field collisionless and the two-fluid hydrodynamic regime. These relaxation times are evaluated as a function of the position in the trap potential. We show that all the relaxation times are dominated by the collisions between the condensate and the non-condensate atoms, and are much smaller than the standard classical collision time used in most of the current literature. The 1998 MIT study of the collective modes at finite temperature is shown to have been well within the two-fluid hydrodynamic regime.

Magnetic structures of RbCuCl_3 in a transverse field

A recent high-field magnetization experiment found a phase transition of unknown character in the layered, frustrated antiferromagnet RbCuCl_3, in a transverse field (in the layers). Motivated by these results, we have examined the magnetic structures predicted by a model of RbCuCl_3, using the classical approximation. At small fields, we obtain the structure already known to be optimal, an incommensurate (IC) spiral with wave vector q in the layers. At higher fields, we find a staircase of long-period commensurate (C) phases (separated initially by the low-field IC phase), then two narrow IC phases, then a fourth IC phase (also with intermediate C phases), and finally the ferromagnetically aligned phase at the saturation field H_S. The three-sublattice C states familiar from the theory of the triangular antiferromagnet are never optimal. The C phases and the two intermediate IC phases were previously unknown in this context. The magnetization is discontinuous at a field \approx 0.4H_S, in qualitative agreement with experiment, though we find much fine structure not reported.

Finite temperature theory of the scissors mode in a Bose gas using the moment method

We use a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate and a semi-classical kinetic equation for the noncondensate atoms to discuss the scissors mode in a trapped Bose-condensed gas at finite temperatures. Both equations include the effect of $C_{12}$ collisions between the condensate and noncondensate atoms. We solve the coupled moment equations describing oscillations of the quadrupole moments of the condensate and noncondensate components to find the collective mode frequencies and collisional damping rates as a function of temperature. Our calculations extend those of Guéry-Odelin and Stringari at T=0 and in the normal phase. They complement the numerical results of Jackson and Zaremba, although Landau damping is left out of our approach. Our results are also used to calculate the quadrupole response function, which is related to the moment of inertia. It is shown explicitly that the moment of inertia of a trapped Bose gas at finite temperatures involves a sum of an irrotational component from the condensate and a rotational component from the thermal cloud atoms.

Dynamical instability of a condensate induced by a rotating thermal gas

We study surface modes of the condensate in the presence of a rotating thermal cloud in an axisymmetric trap. By considering collisions that transfer atoms between the condensate and noncondensate, we find that modes which rotate in the same sense as the thermal cloud damp less strongly than counter-rotating modes. We show that above a critical angular rotation frequency, equivalent to the Landau stability criterion, the co-rotating mode becomes dynamically unstable, leading to the possibility of vortex nucleation. This kind of mechanism is proposed as a natural explanation for the formation of vortices observed recently in the experiment of Haljan \emph{et al} {[}P. C. Haljan \emph{et al.}, cond-mat/0106362{]}. We also generalize our stability analysis to treat the case where the stationary state of the condensate already possesses a single vortex.
