How different is the core of $^{25}$F from $^{24}$O$_{g.s.}$?

The neutron-shell structure of $^{25}$F was studied using quasi-free (p,2p) knockout reaction at 270A MeV in inverse kinematics. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $π$0d$_{5/2}$ orbital is found to be $1.0 \pm 0.3$. However, the spectroscopic factor for the ground-state to ground-state transition ($^{25}$F, $^{24}$O$_{g.s.}$) is only $0.36\pm 0.13$, and $^{24}$O excited states are produced from the 0d$_{5/2}$ proton knockout. The result shows that the $^{24}$O core of $^{25}$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $^{24}$O nucleus, and the core consists of 35% $^{24}$O$_{g.s}$. and 65% excited $^{24}$O.

Polarization and spin correlation parameters in proton knockout reactions from s1/2 - orbits at 1 GeV

The polarization of the secondary protons (P1,2) in the (p,2p) reaction with the S - shell protons of nuclei 4He, 6Li, 12C, 28Si, 40Ca was measured at 1 GeV unpolarized proton beam. The spin correlation parameters Cij for the 4He and 12C targets also were for the first time obtained. The polarization measurements were performed by means of a two - arm magnetic spectrometer each arm of which was equipped with multiwire - proportional chambers polarimeter.

Complete set of polarization transfer observables for the ${}^{16}{\rm O}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{16}{\rm F}$ reaction at 296 MeV and 0 degrees

We report measurements of the cross section and a complete set of polarization transfer observables for the ${}^{16}{\rm O}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{16}{\rm F}$ reaction at a bombarding energy of $T_p$ = 296 MeV and a reaction angle of $θ_{\rm lab}$ = $0^{\circ}$. The data are compared with distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations employing the large configuration-space shell-model (SM) wave functions. The well-known Gamow-Teller and spin-dipole (SD) states at excitation energies of $E_x$ $\lesssim$ 8 MeV have been reasonably reproduced by the calculations except for the spin--parity $J^π$ = $2^-$ state at $E_x$ = 5.86 MeV. The SD resonance at $E_x$ $\simeq$ 9.5 MeV appears to have more $J^π$ = $2^-$ strength than $J^π$ = $1^-$ strength, consistent with the calculations. The data show significant strength in the spin-longitudinal polarized cross section $ID_L(0^{\circ})$ at $E_x$ $\simeq$ 15 MeV, which indicates existence of the $J^π$ = $0^-$ SD resonance as predicted in the SM calculations.

Investigation of inelastic 40Ca(p,p')X reaction at 1 GeV

The polarization of the secondary protons in the inelastic (p,p') reaction on the 40Ca nucleus and the relative cross sections of this reaction at 1 GeV of the initial proton energy were measured in a wide range of the scattered proton momenta (K) at lab angles θ=13.5 and θ=21.0 degrees. The final protons from the reaction were detected by means of a magnetic spectrometer equipped with multiwire proportional chamber polarimeter.

Polarization transfer measurements for $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n})^{12}{\rm N (g.s.},1^+)$ at 296 MeV and nuclear correlation effects

Differential cross sections and complete sets of polarization observables are presented for the Gamow-Teller $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n})^{12}{\rm N}({\rm g.s.},1^+)$ reaction at a bombarding energy of 296 MeV with momentum transfers $q$ of 0.1 to $2.2{\rm fm}^{-1}$. The polarization transfer observables are used to deduce the spin-longitudinal cross section, $ID_q$, and spin-transverse cross sections, $ID_p$ and $ID_n$. The data are compared with calculations based on the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) using shell-model wave functions. Significant differences between the experimental and theoretical results are observed for all three spin-dependent $ID_i$ at momentum transfers of $q \gtrsim 0.5{\rm fm}^{-1}$, suggesting the existence of nuclear correlations beyond the shell model. We also performed DWIA calculations employing random phase approximation (RPA) response functions and found that the observed discrepancy is partly resolved by the pionic and rho-mesonic correlation effects.

Cross-sections and analyzing powers for $(p,n)$ reactions on ${}^{3}{\rm He}$ and ${}^{4}{\rm He}$ at 346 MeV

The cross-sections and analyzing powers for $(p,n)$ reactions on ${}^{3}{\rm He}$ and ${}^{4}{\rm He}$ have been measured at a bombarding energy of $T_p$ = 346 MeV and reaction angles of $θ_{\rm lab}$ = $9.4^{\circ}$--$27^{\circ}$. The energy transfer spectra for ${}^{3}{\rm He}(p,n)$ at large $θ_{\rm lab}$ ($\ge$ $16^{\circ}$) are dominated by quasielastic contributions, and can be reasonably reproduced by plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations for quasielastic scattering. By contrast, the known $L$ = 1 resonances in ${}^{4}{\rm Li}$ are clearly observed near the threshold in the ${}^{4}{\rm He}(p,n)$ spectra. Because these contributions are remarkable at small angles, the energy spectra are significantly different from those expected for quasielastic scattering. The data are compared with the PWIA calculations, and it is found that the quasielastic contributions are dominant at large $θ_{\rm lab}$ ($\ge$ $22^{\circ}$). The nuclear correlation effects on the quasielastic peak for ${}^{4}{\rm He}(p,n)$ are also discussed.

Complete set of polarization transfer coefficients for the ${}^{3}{\rm He}(p,n)$ reaction at 346 MeV and 0 degrees

We report measurements of the cross-section and a complete set of polarization transfer coefficients for the ${}^{3}{\rm He}(p,n)$ reaction at a bombarding energy $T_p$ = 346 MeV and a reaction angle $θ_{\rm lab}$ = $0^{\circ}$. The data are compared with the corresponding free nucleon-nucleon values on the basis of the predominance of quasi-elastic scattering processes. Significant discrepancies have been observed in the polarization transfer $D_{LL}(0^{\circ})$, which are presumably the result of the three-proton $T$ = 3/2 resonance. The spin--parity of the resonance is estimated to be $1/2^-$, and the distribution is consistent with previous results obtained for the same reaction at $T_p$ = 48.8 MeV.

Proton elastic scattering from tin isotopes at 295 MeV and systematic change of neutron density distributions

Cross sections and analyzing powers for proton elastic scattering from $^{116,118,120,122,124}$Sn at 295 MeV have been measured for a momentum transfer of up to about 3.5 fm$^{-1}$ to deduce systematic changes of the neutron density distribution. We tuned the relativistic Love-Franey interaction to explain the proton elastic scattering of a nucleus whose density distribution is well known. Then, we applied this interaction to deduce the neutron density distributions of tin isotopes. The result of our analysis shows the clear systematic behavior of a gradual increase in the neutron skin thickness of tin isotopes with mass number.

Study of nuclear correlation effects via 12C(p,n)12N(g.s.,1+) at 296 MeV

We report measurements of the cross section and a complete set of polarization observables for the Gamow--Teller ${}^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{12}{\rm N}({\rm g.s.},1^+)$ reaction at a bombarding energy of 296 MeV. The data are compared with distorted wave impulse approximation calculations employing transition form factors normalized to reproduce the observed beta-decay $ft$ value. The cross section is significantly under-predicted by the calculations at momentum transfers $q \gtrsim $ 0.5 ${\rm fm^{-1}}$. The discrepancy is partly resolved by considering the non-locality of the nuclear mean field. However, the calculations still under-predict the cross section at large momentum transfers of $q$ $\simeq$ 1.6 ${\rm fm^{-1}}$. We also performed calculations employing random phase approximation response functions and found that the observed enhancement can be attributed in part to pionic correlations in nuclei.

Complete Set of Polarization Transfer Observables for the $^{12}{\rm C}(p,n)$ Reaction at 296 MeV and 0$^{\circ}$

A complete set of polarization transfer observables has been measured for the $^{12}{\rm C}(p,n)$ reaction at $T_p=296 {\rm MeV}$ and $θ_{\rm lab}=0^{\circ}$. The total spin transfer $Σ(0^{\circ})$ and the observable $f_1$ deduced from the measured polarization transfer observables indicate that the spin--dipole resonance at $E_x \simeq 7 {\rm MeV}$ has greater $2^-$ strength than $1^-$ strength, which is consistent with recent experimental and theoretical studies. The results also indicate a predominance of the spin-flip and unnatural-parity transition strength in the continuum. The exchange tensor interaction at a large momentum transfer of $Q \simeq 3.6 {\rm fm}^{-1}$ is discussed.

Relativistic predictions of polarization phenomena in exclusive proton-induced proton-knockout reactions

Whereas a nonrelativistic distorted wave model fails to quantitatively describe analyzing power data for exclusive proton-induced proton-knockout from the 3s_{1/2} state in Pb-208 at 202 MeV, the corresponding relativistic prediction provides a perfect description, thus suggesting that the Dirac equation is the more appropriate underlying dynamical equation. We check the consistency of this rsult by comparing predictions for both dynamical models to new high resolution data for 3s_{1/2} knockout in Pb-208 at a higher incident energy of 392 MeV.

Performance of the neutron polarimeter NPOL3 for high resolution measurements

We describe the neutron polarimeter NPOL3 for the measurement of polarization transfer observables $D_{ij}$ with a typical high resolution of $\sim$300 keV at $T_n$ $\simeq$ 200 MeV. The NPOL3 system consists of three planes of neutron detectors. The first two planes for neutron polarization analysis are made of 20 sets of one-dimensional position-sensitive plastic scintillation counters with a size of 100 cm $\times$ 10 cm $\times$ 5 cm, and they cover the area of 100 $\times$ 100 $\mathrm{cm}^2$. The last plane for detecting doubly scattered neutrons or recoiled protons is made of the two-dimensional position-sensitive liquid scintillation counter with a size of 100 cm $\times$ 100 cm $\times$ 10 cm. The effective analyzing powers $A_{y;\mathrm{eff}}$ and double scattering efficiencies $ε_{\mathrm{D.S.}}$ were measured by using the three kinds of polarized neutrons from the ${}^{2}{\rm H}(\vec{p},\vec{n})pp$, ${}^{6}{\rm Li}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{6}{\rm Be}(\mathrm{g.s.})$, and ${}^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{12}{\rm N}(\mathrm{g.s.})$ reactions at $T_p$ = 198 MeV. The performance of NPOL3 defined as $ε_{\mathrm{D.S.}}(A_{y;\mathrm{eff}})^2$ are similar to that of the Indiana Neutron POLarimeter (INPOL) by taking into account for the counter configuration difference between these two neutron polarimeters.

Charge-Density-Wave Ordering in the Metal-Insulator Transition Compound PrRu4P12

X-ray and electron diffraction measurements on the metal-insulator (M-I) transition compound PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$ have revealed the emergence of a periodic ordering of charge density around the Pr atoms. It is found that the ordering is associated with the onset of a low temperature insulator phase. These conclusions are supported by the facts that the space group of the crystal structure transforms from Im$\bar{3}$ to Pm$\bar{3}$ below the M-I transition temperature and also that the temperature dependence of the superlattice peaks in the insulator phase follows the squared BCS function. The M-I transition could be originated from the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface and/or the instability of the $f$ electrons.

Isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths in $^{11}$B

The $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$), $^{11}$B($d, d'$), and $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reactions were measured at forward scattering angles including $0^\circ$ to study the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths in $^{11}$B. The measured $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$) cross sections were compared with the results of the distorted-wave impulse-approximation (DWIA) calculation, and the Gamow-Teller (GT) strengths for low-lying states in $^{11}$C were determined. The GT strengths were converted to the isovector spin-flip M1 strengths using the isobaric analog relations under the assumption of the isospin symmetry. The isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths were obtained from the ($d, d'$) analysis by assuming that the shape of the collective transition form factor with the same $ΔJ^π$ is similar in the $^{11}$B($d, d'$) and $^{12}$C($d, d'$) reactions. The obtained isovector and isoscalar strengths were used in the DWIA calculations for the $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reaction. The DWIA calculation reasonably well explains the present $^{11}$B($p, p'$) result. However, the calculated cross section for the 8.92-MeV 3/2$^-_2$ state was significantly smaller than the experimental values. The transition strengths obtained in the shell-model calculations were found to be 20-50% larger than the experimental strengths. The transition strengths for the neutrino induced reactions were estimated by using the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths. The present results are quantitatively in agreement with the theoretical estimation discussing the axial isoscalar coupling in the neutrino scattering process, and are useful in the measurement of the stellar neutrinos using the neutral- and charged-current reactions on $^{11}$B.

Relativistic predictions of spin observables for exclusive proton knockout reactions

Within the framework of the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA), we investigate the sensitivity of complete sets of polarization transfer observables for exclusive proton knockout from the 3s$_{1/2}$, 2d$_{3/2}$ and 2d$_{5/2}$ states in $^{208}$Pb, at an incident laboratory kinetic energy of 202 MeV, and for coincident coplanar scattering angles ($28.0^{\circ}$, $-54.6^{\circ}$), to different distorting optical potentials, finite-range (FR) versus zero-range (ZR) approximations to the DWIA, as well as medium-modified meson-nucleon coupling constants and meson masses. Results are also compared to the nonrelativistic DWIA predictions based on the Schrödinger equation.

Polarization transfer in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reaction at forward angles and structure of the spin-dipole resonances

Cross sections and polarization transfer observables in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reactions at 392 MeV were measured at several angles between $θ_{lab}=$ 0$^\circ$ and 14$^\circ$. The non-spin-flip ($ΔS=0$) and spin-flip ($ΔS=1$) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in $^{16}$O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of $E_x=19-$27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by $ΔL=1$ transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with $ΔS=1$ and $ΔL=1$ were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation. Experimental results are reasonably explained by distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with the shell model wave functions.

Thin Ice Target for $^{16}$O(p,p') experiment

A windowless and self-supporting ice target is described. An ice sheet with a thickness of 29.7 mg/cm$^2$ cooled by liquid nitrogen was placed at the target position of a magnetic spectrometer and worked stably in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ experiment at $E_{p}=392$ MeV. Background-free spectra were obtained.
