Thickness-dependent magnetic properties and strain-induced orbital magnetic moment in SrRuO3 thin films

Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO3(001) substrates by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to non-magnetic around 3monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The orbital magnetic moment perpendicular to the film was found to be ~ 0.1μB/Ru atom, and remained nearly unchanged with decreasing film thickness while the spin magnetic moment decreases. Mechanism for the formation of the orbital magnetic moment is discussed based on the electronic structure of the compressively strained SRO film.

Spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in the $n$-type ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As

The electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atoms in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As codoped with Be have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Fe $L_{2,3}$ edge. The XAS and XMCD spectra showed simple spectral line shapes similar to Fe metal, but the ratio of the orbital and spin magnetic moments ($M_\mathrm{orb}$/$M_\mathrm{spin}$) estimated using the XMCD sum rules was significantly larger than that of Fe metal, indicating a significant orbital moment of Fe $3d$ electrons in (In,Fe)As:Be. The positive value of $M_\mathrm{orb}$/$M_\mathrm{spin}$ implies that the Fe $3d$ shell is more than half-filled, which arises from the hybridization of the Fe$^{3+}$ ($d^5$) state with the charge-transfer $d^6\underline{L}$ states, where $\underline{L}$ is a ligand hole in the host valence band. The XMCD intensity as a function of magnetic field indicated hysteretic behavior of the superparamagnetic-like component due to discrete ferromagnetic domains.

Orbital magnetic moment and coercivity of SiO$_{2}$-coated FePt nanoparticles studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the $L$1$_{0}$-ordered phase coated with SiO$_{2}$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe $L_{\rm 2,3}$ absorption edges. Using XMCD sum rules, we evaluated the ratio of the orbital magnetic moment ($M_{\rm orb}$) to the spin magnetic moment ($M_{\rm spin}$) of Fe to be $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ = 0.08. This $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ value is comparable to the value (0.09) obtained for FePt nanoparticles prepared by gas phase condensation, and is larger than the values ($\sim$0.05) obtained for FePt thin films, indicating a high degree of $L$1$_{0}$ order. The hysteretic behavior of the FePt component of the magnetization was measured by XMCD. The magnetic coercivity ($H_{\rm c}$) was found to be as large as 1.8 T at room temperature, $\sim$3 times larger than the thin film value and $\sim$50 times larger than that of the gas phase condensed nanoparticles. The hysteresis curve is well explained by the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for non-interacting single-domain nanoparticles with the $H_{\rm c}$ distributed from 1 T to 5 T.

Role of doped Ru in coercivity-enhanced La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}MnO$_3$ thin film studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

The coercivity of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M$_{2,3}$ and Mn L$_{2,3}$ edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate in the presence of spin-orbit interaction.

Enhanced ferromagnetic moment in Co-doped BiFeO3 thin films studied by soft X-ray circular dichroism

BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) shows both ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering at room temperature but its ferromagnetic component, which is due to spin canting, is negligible. Substitution of transition-metal atoms such as Co for Fe is known to enhance the ferromagnetic component in BFO. In order to reveal the origin of such magnetization enhancement, we performed soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of BiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_3$ ({\it x} = 0 to 0.30) (BFCO) thin films grown on LaAlO$_3$(001) substrates. The XAS results indicated that the Fe and Co ions are in the Fe$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ states. The XMCD results showed that the Fe ions show ferromagnetism while the Co ions are antiferromagnetic at room temperature. The XAS and XMCD measurements also revealed that part of the Fe$^{3+}$ ions are tetrahedrally co-ordinated by oxygen ions but that the XMCD signals of the octahedrally coordinated Fe$^{3+}$ ions increase with Co content. The results suggest that an impurity phase such as the ferrimagnetic $γ$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ which exists at low Co concentration decreases with increasing Co concentration and that the ferromagnetic component of the Fe$^{3+}$ ion in the octrahedral crystal fields increases with Co concentration, probably reflecting the increased canting of the Fe$^{3+}$ ions.

Electronic configuration of Mn ions in the $π$-d molecular ferromagnet $β$-Mn phthalocyanine studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have studied the electronic structure of the molecular ferromagnet $β$-Mn phthalocyanine ($β$-MnPc) in a polycrystalline form, which has been reported to show ferromagnetism at T$<$8.6 K, by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental results and subsequent cluster-model calculation, we find that the ferromagnetic Mn ion in $β$-MnPc is largely in the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state arising from the ($e$$_{g}$)$^3$($b$$_{2g}$)$^1$($a$$_{1g}$)$^1$ [($d_{xz,yz}$)$^3$($d_{xy}$)$^1$($d_{z^{2}}$)$^1$] configuration of the Mn$^{2+}$ state. Considering that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of MnPc with the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state originates from the $a$$_{1g}$ orbital of the Mn$^{2+}$ ion, it is proposed that $a$$_{1g}$-$a$$_{1g}$ exchange coupling via the $π$ orbitals of the phthalocyanine ring plays a crucial role in the ferromagnetism of $β$-MnPc.

Ferromagnetism in ZnO co-doped with Mn and N studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have investigated the electronic structure of ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Mn,N thin films using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonance-photoemission spectroscopy. From the Mn 2$p$$\rightarrow3d$ XMCD results, it is shown that, while XMCD signals only due to paramagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions were observed in ZnO:Mn, nonmagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions coexist in ZnO:Mn,N. XMCD signals of ZnO:Mn,N revealed that the localized Mn$^{2+}$ ground state and Mn$^{2+}$ state hybridized with ligand hole coexisted, implying $p$-$d$ exchange coupling. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was suppressed, suggesting that interaction between magnetic moments in ZnO:Mn,N has localized nature.

Indication of antiferromagnetic interaction between paramagnetic Co ions in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O

The magnetic properties of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O ($x=0.07$ and 0.10) thin films, which were homo-epitaxially grown on a ZnO(0001) substrates with varying relatively high oxygen pressure, have been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co $2p$ core-level absorption edge. The line shapes of the absorption spectra are the same in all the films and indicate that the Co$^{2+}$ ions substitute for the Zn sites. The magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the XMCD intensity are consistent with the magnetization measurements, indicating that except for Co there are no additional sources for the magnetic moment, and demonstrate the coexistence of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic components in the homo-epitaxial Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films, in contrast to the ferromagnetism in the hetero-epitaxial Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O films studied previously. The analysis of the XMCD intensities using the Curie-Weiss law reveals the presence of antiferromagnetic interaction between the paramagnetic Co ions. Missing XMCD intensities and magnetization signals indicate that most of Co ions are non-magnetic probably because they are strongly coupled antiferromagnetically with each other. Annealing in a high vacuum reduces both the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic signals. We attribute the reductions to thermal diffusion and aggregation of Co ions with antiferromagnetic nanoclusters in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O.

Bulk 5f electronic states in uranium monochalcogenide US

We have investigated the electronic states of the uranium monochalcogenide US, which is a typical ferromagnetic uranium compound, using soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SX-PES). In early ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy studies, two peak structures of the U 5f states were observed and have been interpreted that one has an itinerant character around the Fermi level (EF) and the other located below EF has a character of localized U 5f electrons. In this study, the intrinsic bulk valence-band spectrum of US was first deduced by estimating the contribution of surface states to the valence-band spectrum using core-level photoemission spectra. We conclude that the electronic structure of US can be basically described by the itinerant nature of the U 5f electrons from comparison with theoretical valence-band spectra obtained by band-structure calculation in the local-density approximation.

4f-derived Fermi Surfaces of CeRu2(Si[1-x]Ge[x])2 near the Quantum Critical Point: Resonant Soft X-ray ARPES Study

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in the Ce 3d-4f excitation region was measured for the paramagnetic state of CeRu2Si2, CeRu2(Si0.82Ge0.18)2, and LaRu2Si2 to investigate the changes of the 4$f$ electron Fermi surfaces around the quantum critical point. While the difference of the Fermi surfaces between CeRu2Si2 and LaRu2Si2 was experimentally confirmed, a strong 4f-electron character was observed in the band structures and the Fermi surfaces of CeRu2Si2 and CeRu2(Si0.82Ge0.18)2, consequently indicating a delocalized nature of the 4$f$ electrons in both compounds. The absence of Fermi surface reconstruction across the critical composition suggests that SDW quantum criticality is more appropriate than local quantum criticality in CeRu2(Si[1-x]Ge[x])2.

Electronic structure and magnetism of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Fe-doped ZnO nano-particles

We have studied the electronic structure of Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature, by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental and cluster-model calculation results, we find that Fe atoms are predominantly in the Fe$^{3+}$ ionic state with mixture of a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ and that Fe$^{3+}$ ions are dominant in the surface region of the nano-particles. It is shown that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles is primarily originated from the antiferromagnetic coupling between unequal amounts of Fe$^{3+}$ ions occupying two sets of nonequivalent positions in the region of the XMCD probing depth of $\sim$ 2-3 nm.

Electronic structure of Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N and Si-doping effects studied by photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N and the effect of Si doping on it have been investigated by photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We have confirmed that Cr in GaN is predominantly trivalent substituting for Ga, and that Cr 3$d$ states appear within the band gap of GaN just above the N 2$p$-derived valence-band maximum. As a result of Si doping, downward shifts of the core levels (except for Cr 2$p$) and the formation of new states near the Fermi level were observed, which we attribute to the upward chemical potential shift and the formation of a small amount of Cr$^{2+}$ species caused by the electron doping. Possibility of Cr-rich cluster growth by Si doping are discussed based on the spectroscopic and magnetization data.

Local electronic structure of Cr in the II-VI diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te

The electronic structure of the Cr ions in the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te ($x=0.03$ and 0.15) thin films has been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Magnetic-field ($H$) and temperature ($T$) dependences of the Cr $2p$ XMCD spectra well correspond to the magnetization measured by a SQUID magnetometer. The line shape of the Cr $2p$ XMCD spectra is independent of $H$, $T$, and $x$, indicating that the ferromagnetism is originated from the same electronic states of the Cr ion. Cluster-model analysis indicates that although there are two or more kinds of Cr ions in the Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te samples, the ferromagnetic XMCD signal is originated from Cr ions substituted for the Zn site. The Cr 3d partial density of states extracted using Cr $2p \to 3d$ resonant PES shows a broad feature near the top of the valence band, suggesting strong $s$,$p$-$d$ hybridization. No density of states is detected at the Fermi level, consistent with their insulating behavior. Based on these findings, we conclude that double exchange mechanism cannot explain the ferromagnetism in Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$Te.

Hybridization between the conduction band and 3d orbitals in the oxide-based diluted magnetic semiconductor In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$

The electronic structure of In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ ($x=0.08$) has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The V $2p$ core-level PES and XAS spectra revealed trivalent electronic state of the V ion, consistent with the substitution of the V ion for the In site. The V 3d partial density of states obtained by the resonant PES technique showed a sharp peak above the O $2p$ band. While the O $1s$ XAS spectrum of In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ was similar to that of In$_2$O$_3$, there were differences in the In $3p$ and 3d XAS spectra between V-doped and pure In$_2$O$_3$. The observations give clear evidence for hybridization between the In conduction band and the V 3d orbitals in In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$.

Nature of magnetic coupling between Mn ions in as-grown Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

The magnetic properties of as-grown Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As have been investigated by the systematic measurements of temperature and magnetic field dependent soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The {\it intrinsic} XMCD intensity at high temperatures obeys the Curie-Weiss law, but residual spin magnetic moment appears already around 100 K, significantly above Curie temperature ($T_C$), suggesting that short-range ferromagnetic correlations are developed above $T_C$. The present results also suggest that antiferromagnetic interaction between the substitutional and interstitial Mn (Mn$_{int}$) ions exists and that the amount of the Mn$_{int}$ affects $T_C$.

Systematic changes of the electronic structure of the diluted ferromagnetic oxide Li-doped Ni$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O with hole doping

The electronic structure of Li-doped Ni$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ni $2p$ core-level PES and XAS spectra were not changed by Li doping. In contrast, the Fe$^{3+}$ intensity increased with Li doping relative to the Fe$^{2+}$ intensity. However, the increase of Fe$^{3+}$ is only $\sim 5%$ of the doped Li content, suggesting that most of the doped holes enter the O $2p$ and/or the charge-transferred configuration Ni $3d^8\underline{L}$. The Fe 3d partial density of states and the host valence-band emission near valence-band maximum increased with Li content, consistent with the increase of electrical conductivity. Based on these findings, percolation of bound magnetic polarons is proposed as an origin of the ferromagnetic behavior.

Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3 across the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition

Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3, which is ferromagnetic for Sr concentration x > 0.3, has been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in Ru 3p and O 1s core-level x-ray absorption. XMCD signals appear at x ~ 0.3 and monotonically increases with x in the ferromagnetic phase. While the monotonic increase of the XMCD signals with x is of a typical Stoner-type, the absence of appreciable change in the spectral line shapes of both the Ru 3p and O 1s XMCD spectra indicate that the itinerant-electron ferromagnetism in Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3 is influenced by strong electron correlation.

Photoemission and x-ray absorption studies of valence states in (Ni,Zn,Fe,Ti)$_{3}$O$_{4}$ thin films exhibiting photo-induced magnetization

By means of photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we have studied the electronic structure of (Ni,Zn,Fe,Ti)$_{3}$O$_{4}$ thin films, which exhibits a cluster glass behavior with a spin-freezing temperature $T_f$ of $\sim 230$ K and photo-induced magnetization (PIM) below $T_f$. The Ni and Zn ions were found to be in the divalent states. Most of the Fe and Ti ions in the thin films were trivalent (Fe$^{3+}$) and tetravalent (Ti$^{4+}$), respectively. While Ti doping did not affect the valence states of the Ni and Zn ions, a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ ions increased with Ti concentration, consistent with the proposed charge-transfer mechanism of PIM.
