New S=1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnets A$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$: A=Cs and Rb

We synthesized single crystals of the new hexagonal compounds A$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ with A=Cs and Rb, and investigated their magnetic properties. These compounds are composed of Kagomé layers of corner-sharing CuF$_6$-octahedra. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has the proper Kagomé layer at room temperature, and undergoes structural phase transition at $T_\mathrm{t}\simeq 185$ K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ agrees well with the result of the numerical calculation for $S=1/2$ two-dimensional Heisenberg Kagomé antiferromagnet down to $T_\mathrm{t}$ with the nearest exchange interaction $J/k_\mathrm{B}\simeq 240$ K. Although the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the calculated result below $T<T_\mathrm{t}$, the rounded maxima were observed at approximately $T\simeq (1/6)J/k_\mathrm{B}$ as predicted by the theory. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ undergoes three-dimensional magnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{N} = 20$ K.

Singlet Ground State and Spin Gap in S=1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$

We investigated the crystal structure of Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and its magnetic properties using single crystals. This compound is composed of Kagome layers of corner-sharing CuF$_{6}$ octahedra with a 2a x 2a enlarged cell as compared with the proper Kagome layer. Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ is magnetically described as an $S$=1/2 modified Kagome antiferromagnet with four kinds of neighboring exchange interaction. From magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements, it was found that the ground state is a disordered singlet with the spin gap, as predicted from a recent theory. Exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster was performed to analyze the magnetic susceptibility, and individual exchange interactions were evaluated.

Electrochemical synthesis and properties of CoO2, the x = 0 phase of the AxCoO2 systems (A = Li, Na)

Single-phase bulk samples of the "exotic" CoO2, the x = 0 phase of the AxCoO2 systems (A = Li, Na), were successfully synthesized through electrochemical de-intercalation of Li from pristine LiCoO2 samples. The samples of pure CoO2 were found to be essentially oxygen stoichiometric and possess a hexagonal structure consisting of stacked triangular-lattice CoO2 layers only. The magnetism of CoO2 is featured with a temperature-independent susceptibility of the magnitude of 10-3 emu/mol Oe, being essentially identical to that of a Li-doped phase, Li0.12CoO2. It is most likely that the CoO2 phase is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with itinerant electrons.

Synthesis and properties of CoO2, the x = 0 end member of the LixCoO2 and NaxCoO2 systems

We report here the synthesis of single-phase bulk samples of CoO2, the x = 0 end member of the AxCoO2 systems (A = Li, Na), from a pristine LiCoO2 sample using an electrochemical technique to completely de-intercalate lithium. Thus, synthesized CoO2 samples were found to be oxygen-stoichiometric and possess a crystal structure consisting of stacked triangular-lattice CoO2 layers only. The magnetic susceptibility of the CoO2 sample was revealed to be relatively large in its initial value and then level off as the temperature increases, suggesting that CoO2 is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with itinerant electrons.

Magnetic fingerprint in a ferromagnetic wire: Spin torque diode effect and induction of the DC voltage spectrum inherent in the wire under application for RF current

We report the rectifying effect of a constant-wave radio frequency (RF) current by a magnetic domain wall (DW) on a single-layered ferromagnetic wire. A direct-current (DC) voltage is generated by the spin torque diode effect, which is a consequence of magnetoresistance oscillation due to the resonant spin wave excitation induced by the spin-polarized RF current. The DC voltage spectrum strongly depends on the internal spin structure in the DW, which corresponds to the magnetic fingerprint of the spin structure in the ferromagnetic wire.

Thermodynamics of the Up-Up-Down Phase of the S = 1/2 Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$

Specific heat and the magnetocaloric effect are used to probe the field-induced up-up-down phase of Cs2CuBr4, a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet with near-maximal frustration. The shape of the magnetic phase diagram shows that the phase is stabilized by quantum fluctuations, not by thermal fluctuations as in the corresponding phase of classical spins. The magnon gaps determined from the specific heat are considerably larger than those expected for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet, probably due to the presence of a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Rectification of radio frequency current in ferromagnetic nanowire

We report the rectification of a constant wave radio frequency (RF) current by using a single-layer magnetic nanowire; a direct-current voltage is resonantly generated when the RF current flows through the nanowire. The mechanism of the rectification is discussed in terms of the spin torque diode effect reported for magnetic tunnel junction devices and the rectification is shown to be direct attributable to resonant spin wave excitation by the RF current.

Orbital Configurations and Magnetic Properties of Double-Layered Antiferromagnet Cs$_3$Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$

We report the single-crystal X-ray analysis and magnetic properties of a new double-layered perovskite antiferromagnet, Cs$_3$Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$. This structure is composed of Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$ double layers with elongated CuCl$_4$Br$_2$ octahedra and is closely related to the Sr$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$ structure. An as-grown crystal has a singlet ground state with a large excitation gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B}\simeq 2000$ K, due to the strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the two layers. Cs$_3$Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_{\rm s}\simeq330$ K accompanied by changes in the orbital configurations of Cu$^{2+}$ ions. Once a Cs$_3$Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$ crystal is heated above $T_{\rm s}$, its magnetic susceptibility obeys the Curie-Weiss law with decreasing temperature even below $T_{\rm s}$ and does not exhibit anomalies at $T_{\rm s}$. This implies that in the heated crystal, the orbital state of the high-temperature phase remains unchanged below $T_{\rm s}$, and thus, this orbital state is the metastable state. The structural phase transition at $T_{\rm s}$ is characterized as an order-disorder transition of Cu$^{2+}$ orbitals.

Magentic Ordering under Hydrostatic Pressure in Doped Spin Gap Systems ACu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$: A$=$Tl and K

Magnetic phase transitions under hydrostatic pressures in spin gap systems TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$ and KCu$_{0.973}$Mg$_{0.027}$Cl$_3$ were investigated by magnetization measurements. The present doped systems exhibit impurity-induced magnetic orderings. With increasing pressure, ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ increases. With a further increase in pressure, the present systems undergo phase transitions to uniform antiferromagnetic phases due to the closing of the triplet gap in the intact dimers. The crossover from the impurity-induced ordered phase to the uniform antiferromagnetic phase occurs at $P \simeq 1.3$ kbar for TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$.

Magnetic-Field Induced Gap in One-Dimensional Antiferromagnet KCuGaF$_6$

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields were performed on an $S=1/2$ one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuGaF$_6$. Exchange interaction was evaluated as $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 100$ K. However, no magnetic ordering was observed down to 0.46 K. It was found that an applied magnetic field induces a staggered magnetic susceptibility obeying the Curie law and an excitation gap, both of which should be attributed to the antisymmetric interaction of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type and/or the staggered $g$-tensor. With increasing magnetic field $H$, the gap increases almost in proportion to $H^{2/3}$.

Crossover from impurity-induced ordered phase to uniform antiferromagnetic phase under hydrostatic pressure in the doped spin-gap system TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$

Magnetic phase transition under hydrostatic pressure in TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$ was investigated by magnetization measurements. The parent compound TlCuCl$_3$ is a coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at $P_{\rm c} = 0.42$ kbar due to the shrinkage of the gap. At ambient pressure, the present doped system exhibits impurity-induced magnetic ordering at $T_{\rm N}=2.5$ K. With increasing pressure, $T_{\rm N}$ increases. This is because the effective exchange interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ between unpaired spins is enhanced by the shrinkage of the gap. With a further increase in pressure, the present system undergoes a phase transition to a uniform antiferromagnetic phase due to the closing of the triplet gap in the intact dimers. The crossover from the impurity-induced ordered phase to the uniform antiferromagnetic phase occurs at $P \simeq 1.3$ kbar.

Magentic-Field Induced Quantum Phase Transition and Critical Behavior in a Gapped Spin System TlCuCl$_3$

Magnetization measurements were performed on TlCuCl$_3$ with gapped ground state. The critical density and the magnetic phase diagram were obtained. The interacting constant was obtained as $U/k_{\rm B} = 313$ K. The experimental phase boundary for $T < 5$ K agrees perfectly with the magnon BEC theory based on the Hartree-Fock approximation with realistic dispersion relations and $U/k_{\rm B} = 320 $ K. The exponent $ϕ$ obtained with all the data points for $T < 5$ K is $ϕ= 1.99$, which is somewhat larger than theoretical exponent $ϕ_{\rm BEC} =3/2$. However, it was found that the exponent converges at $ϕ_{\rm BEC} =3/2$ with decreasing fitting window.

S=1/2 Kagome antiferromagnets Cs$_2$Cu$_3MF$_{12}$ with M=Zr and Hf

Magnetization and specific heat measurements have been carried out on Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$ single crystals, in which Cu$^{2+}$ ions with spin-1/2 form a regular Kagomé lattice. The antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between neighboring Cu$^{2+}$ spins is $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 360$ K and 540 K for Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$, respectively. Structural phase transitions were observed at $T_{\rm t}\simeq 210$ K and 175 K for Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$, respectively. The specific heat shows a small bend anomaly indicative of magnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{N}= 23.5$ K and 24.5 K in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$, respectively. Weak ferromagnetic behavior was observed below $T_\mathrm{N}$. This weak ferromagnetism should be ascribed to the antisymmetric interaction of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type that are generally allowed in the Kagomé lattice.

Effects of annealing time on structural and magnetic properties of L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreactor method

We investigated effects of annealing time on structural and magnetic properties of the L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreacter method. The magnetization and powder X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the annealing at 900 oC for 9 hr could convert all of the fcc-nanoparticles to the well-crystallized L10 structure with a large coercivity while keeping their particle size. Such monodisperse and highly crystalline L10-FePt nanoparticles are a promising material for the realization of ultra-high density recording.

Reduction of threshold current density for current-driven domain wall motion by shape control

We investigated the aspect ratio (thickness/width) dependence of the threshold current density required for the current-driven domain wall (DW) motion for the Ni81Fe19 nanowires. It has been shown theoretically that the threshold current density is proportional to the product of the hard-axis magnetic anisotropy Kperp and the DW width lamda. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 086601 (2004).) We show experimentally that Kperp can be controlled by the magnetic shape anisotropy in the case of the Ni81Fe19 nanowires, and that the threshold current density increases with an increase of Kperp*l. We succeeded to reduce the threshold current density by half by the shape control.

Drastic Change of Magnetic Phase Diagram in Doped Quantum Antiferromagnet TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$

TlCuCl$_3$ is a coupled spin dimer system, which has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $Δ/gμ_{\mathrm B}$ = 5.5 T. TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$ doped with nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ ions undergoes impurity-induced magnetic ordering. Because triplet excitation with a finite gap still remains, this doped system can also undergo magnetic-field-induced magnetic ordering. By specific heat measurements and neutron scattering experiments under a magnetic field, we investigated the phase diagram in TlCu$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Cl$_3$ with $x\sim 0.01$, and found that impurity- and field-induced ordered phases are the same. The gapped spin liquid state observed in pure TlCuCl$_3$ is completely wiped out by the small amount of doping.

Current-driven domain wall motion in magnetic wires with asymmetric notches

Current-driven domain wall (DW) motion in magnetic wires with asymmetric notches was investigated by means of magnetic force microscopy. It was found that the critical current density necessary for the current-driven DW motion depended on the propagation direction of the DW. The DW moved more easily in the direction along which the slope of the asymmetric notch was less inclined.

First-Principles Study on Electron Conduction in Sodium Nanowire

We present detailed first-principles calculations of the electron-conduction properties of a three-sodium-atom nanowire suspended between semi-infinite crystalline Na(001) electrodes during its elongation. Our investigations reveal that the conductance is ~1 G0 before the nanowire breaks and only one channel with the characteristic of the $3s$ orbital of the center atom in the nanowire contributes to the electron conduction. Moreover, the channel fully opens around the Fermi level, and the behavior of the channel-current density is insensitive to the structural deformation of the nanowire. These results verify that the conductance trace as a function of the electrode spacing exhibits a flat plateau at ~1 G0 during elongation.
