Raman scattering through a metal-insulator transition

The exact solution for nonresonant A1g and B1g Raman scattering is presented for the simplest model that has a correlated metal-insulator transition--the Falicov-Kimball model, by employing dynamical mean field theory. In the general case, the A1g response includes nonresonant, resonant, and mixed contributions, the B1g response includes nonresonant and resonant contributions (we prove the Shastry-Shraiman relation for the nonresonant B1g response) while the B2g response is purely resonant. Three main features are seen in the nonresonant B1g channel: (i) the rapid appearance of low-energy spectral weight at the expense of higher-energy weight; (b) the frequency range for this low-energy spectral weight is much larger than the onset temperature, where the response first appears; and (iii) the occurrence of an isosbestic point, which is a characteristic frequency where the Raman response is independent of temperature for low temperatures. Vertex corrections renormalize away all of these anomalous features in the nonresonant A1g channel. The calculated results compare favorably to the Raman response of a number of correlated systems on the insulating side of the quantum-critical point (ranging from Kondo insulators, to mixed-valence materials, to underdoped high-temperature superconductors). We also show why the nonresonant B1g Raman response is ``universal'' on the insulating side of the metal-insulator transition.

Nonresonant B1g Raman scattering in the Hubbard model

The numerically exact solution for nonresonant B1g Raman scattering is presented for the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. This solution illustrates the modifications of the Raman response (in a system tuned through the quantum-critical point of a metal-insulator transition) due to Fermi-liquid properties in the metallic phase. In the insulating phase, we recover the predicted universal behavior, while we find the Raman response is quite anomalous on the metallic side of the transition. Our calculated results are similar to those measured in FeSi, SmB6, and underdoped cuprates.

Raman scattering near a quantum critical point

Electronic Raman scattering experiments in a wide variety of materials (ranging from mixed-valence materials to Kondo insulators to high-temperature superconductors) show anomalous behavior in the B_{1g} channel when the system is on the insulating side of the metal-insulator transition. Here we provide an exact solution for B_{1g} Raman scattering in the Falicov-Kimball model, show how these theoretical results are universal near the metal-insulator transition and show how they produce the two main features seen in experiments near a quantum critical point: (i) the rapid appearance of low-energy spectral weight as T is increased from 0 and (ii) the existence of an isosbestic point (where the Raman response is independent of T at a characteristic frequency).

Collective Spin Fluctuation Mode and Raman Scattering in Superconducting Cuprates

Although the low frequency electronic Raman response in the superconducting state of the cuprates can be largely understood in terms of a d-wave energy gap, a long standing problem has been an explanation for the spectra observed in the $A_{1g}$ polarization orientations. We present calculations which suggest that the peak position of the observed $A_{1g}$ spectra is due to a collective spin fluctuation mode.

Quasiparticle Inelastic Lifetime from Paramagnons in Disordered Superconductors

The paramagnon contribution to the quasiparticle inelastic scattering rate in disordered superconductors is presented. Using Anderson's exact eigenstate formalism, it is shown that the scattering rate is Stoner enhanced and is further enhanced by the disorder relative to the clean case in a manner similar to the disorder enhancement of the long-range Coulomb contribution. The results are discussed in connection with the possibility of conventional or unconventional superconductivity in the borocarbides. The results are compared to recent tunneling experiments on LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C.

Unconventional electronic Raman spectra of borocarbide superconductors

Borocarbide superconductors, which are thought to be conventional BCS-type superconductors, are not so conventional in several electronic Raman properties. Anisotropic gap-like features and finite scattering strength below the gap were observed for the $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C ($R$ = Lu, Y) systems in our previous study. The effects of Co-doping on the 2$Δ$ gap-like features and the finite scattering strength below and above the gap are studied in $R$ = Lu (B = B$^{11}$) system. In superconducting states, Co-doping strongly suppresses the 2$Δ$ peak in both B$_{2g}$ and B$_{1g}$ symmetries. Raman cross-section calculation which includes inelastic scattering shows a relatively good fit to the features above the 2$Δ$ peak, while it does not fully account for the features below the peak.

A Consistent Picture of Electronic Raman Scattering and Infrared Conductivity in the Cuprates

Calculations are presented for electronic Raman scattering and infrared conductivity in a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ superconductor including the effects of elastic scattering via anisotropic impurities and inelastic spin-fluctuation scattering. A consistent description of experiments on optimally doped Bi-2212 is made possible by considering the effects of correlations on both inelastic and elastic scattering.

Neutron Scattering and the B_{1g} Phonon in the Cuprates

The momentum dependent lineshape of the out-of-phase oxygen vibration as measured in recent neutron scattering measurements is investigated. Starting from a microscopic coupling of the phonon vibration to a local crystal field, the phonon lineshift and broadening is calculated as a function of transfered momentum in the superconducting state of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$. It is shown that the anisotropy of the density of states, superconducting energy gap, and the electron-phonon coupling are all crucial in order to explain these experiments.

Physical origin of the buckling in CuO$_2$: Electron-phonon coupling and Raman spectra

It is shown theoretically that the buckling of the CuO$_{2}$ planes in certain cuprate systems can be explained in terms of an electric field across the planes which originates from different valences of atoms above and below the plane. This field results also in a strong coupling of the Raman-active out-of-phase vibration of the oxygen atoms ($B_{1g}$ mode) to the electronic charge transfer between the two oxygens in the CuO$_{2}$ plane. Consequently, the electric field can be deduced from the Fano-type line shape of the $B_{1g}$ phonon. Using the electric field estimated from the electron-phonon coupling the amplitude of the buckling is calculated and found to be in good agreement with the structural data. Direct experimental support for the idea proposed is obtained in studies of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ and Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$(Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$)Cu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with different oxygen and yttrium doping, respectively, including antiferromagnetic samples. In the latter compound, symmetry breaking by replacing Ca partially by Y leads to an enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling by an order of magnitude.

Theory of Electronic Raman Scattering in Nearly Antiferromagnetic Fermi Liquids

A theory of electronic Raman scattering in nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids is constructed using the phenomenological electron-electron interaction introduced by Millis, Monien, and Pines. The role of "hot spots" and their resulting signatures in the channel dependent Raman spectra is highlighted, and different scaling regimes are addressed. The effects of self consistency and vertex corrections are compared to a perturbative treatment of the interaction. The theory is then compared to Raman spectra taken in the normal state of cuprate superconductors, and it is shown that many features of the symmetry dependent spectra can be explained by the theory. Remaining questions are addressed.

Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling and its Irrelevance to High T$_{c}$ Superconductivity

It is argued that the origin of the buckling of the CuO$_{2}$ planes in certain cuprates as well as the strong electron-phonon coupling of the $B_{1g}$ phonon is due to the electric field across the planes induced by atoms with different valence above and below. The magnitude of the electric field is deduced from new Raman results on YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ and Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$(Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$)Cu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with different O and Y doping, respectively. In the latter case it is shown that the symmetry breaking by replacing Ca partially by Y enhances the coupling by an order of magnitude, while the superconducting $T_c$ drops to about two third of its original value.

Evidence for Magnetic Pseudoscaling in Overdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

We report the results of electronic Raman scattering experiments on an overdoped La(1.78)Sr(0.22)CuO(4) single crystal as a function of temperature. The scattering rate Gamma(w->0,T) has been determined from the normal state B(1g) spectra in the range 50 K < T < 300 K. Gamma(T) decreases linearly from 300 K to about 175 K and then undergoes a reduction with respect to the expected mean-field behavior. This trend suggests a crossover to pseudoscaling regime at about T(cr)=160 K. The results are in good agreement with the prediction of the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model. There is no evidence of a pseudogap in the spectra obtained from this overdoped sample.

Magnetic pair breaking in disordered superconducting films

A theory for the effects of nonmagnetic disorder on the magnetic pair breaking rate $α$ induced by paramagnetic impurities in quasi two-dimensional superconductors is presented. Within the framework of a strong-coupling theory for disordered superconductors, we find that the disorder dependence of $α$ is determined by the disorder enhancements of both the electron-phonon coupling and the spin-flip scattering rate. These two effects have a tendency to cancel each other. With parameter values appropriate for Pb_{0.9} Bi_{0.1}, we find a pair breaking rate that is very weakly dependent on disorder for sheet resistances 0 < R < 2.5 kOhm, in agreement with a recent experiment by Chervenak and Valles.

Raman Scattering in Cuprate Superconductors

A theory for electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate superconductors is presented with a specific emphasis on the polarization dependence of the spectra which can infer the symmetry of the energy gap. Signatures of the effects of disorder on the low frequency and low temperature behavior of the Raman spectra for different symmetry channels provide detailed information about the magnitude and the phase of the energy gap. Properties of the theory for finite T are discussed and compared to recent data concerning the doping dependence of the Raman spectra in cuprate superconductors, and remaining questions are addressed.

Extended Impurity Potential in a d_{x^2-y^2} Superconductor

We investigate the role of a finite potential range of a nonmagnetic impurity for the local density of states in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. Impurity induced subgap resonances are modified by the appearance of further scattering channels beyond the $s$--wave scattering limit. The structure of the local density of states (DOS) in the vicinity of the impurity is significantly enhanced and therefore improves the possibility for observing the characteristic anisotropic spatial modulation of the local DOS in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Multiband Electronic Raman Scattering in Bilayer Superconductors

A theory of electronic Raman scattering in the presence of several energy bands crossing the Fermi surface is developed. The contributions to the light scattering cross section are calculated for each band and it is shown that the cross section can be written in terms of the sum of the single band contributions and a mixing term which only contributes to the fully symmetric channels $(A_{1g})$. Particular emphasis is placed on screening in bilayer superconductors. Since any charge fluctuation with long range character in real space is screened by the Coulomb interaction, the relevant fluctuations in a single layer case are induced between different parts of the Fermi surface. In a single band $d$-wave superconductor the scattering at energy transfer twice the maximum gap $Δ_{max}$ is dominated by those parts of the Fermi surface where $Δ^2({\bf k})$ is largest. As a consequence, the fully symmetric ($A_{1g}$) scattering is screened. In the case of a bilayer superconductor however, the charge transfer is possible between layers inside the unit cell. Therefore a formalism is considered which is valid for general band structure, superconducting energy gaps, and inter-layer hopping matrix elements. The spectra is calculated for La 2:1:4 and Y 1:2:3 as representative single and bilayer superconductors. The mixing term is found to be negligible and thus the response is well approximated by the sum of the contributions from the individual bands. The theory imposes strong constraints on both the magnitude and symmetry of the energy gap for the bilayer cuprates, and indicates that a nearly identical energy gap of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ symmetry provides a best fit to the data. However, the $A_{1g}$ part of the spectrum depends sensitively on many parameters.
