Vortex gyroscope imaging of planar superfluids

We propose a robust imaging technique that makes it possible to distinguish vortices from antivortices in quasi-two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates from a single image of the density of the atoms. Tilting the planar condensate prior to standard absorption imaging excites a generalized gyroscopic mode of the condensate revealing the sign and location of each vortex. This technique is anticipated to enable experimental measurement of the incompressible kinetic energy spectrum of the condensate and the observation of a negative temperature phase transition of the vortex gas, driven by two-dimensional superfluid turbulence.

Diffraction catastrophes threaded by quantized vortex skeletons caused by atom-optical aberrations induced in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a nonlinear atom-optics experiment to create diffraction catastrophes threaded by quantized vortex skeletons in Bose-Einstein condensed matter waves. We show how atom-optical aberrations induced in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates evolve into specific caustic structures due to imperfect focusing. Vortex skeletons, whose cross-sections are staggered vortex lattices, are observed to nucleate inside the universal diffraction catastrophes. Our observations shed further light on the structure and dynamics of Bose-novae and suggest applications of matter wave diffraction catastrophes, including detection of the order parameter pairing symmetry in cold gas experiments.

Quasicondensation and coherence in the quasi-two-dimensional trapped Bose gas

We simulate a trapped quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas using a classical field method. To interpret our results we identify the uniform Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature $T_{BKT}$ as where the system phase space density satisfies a critical value. We observe that density fluctuations are suppressed in the system well above $T_{BKT}$ when a quasi-condensate forms as the first occurrence of degeneracy. At lower temperatures, but still above $T_{BKT}$, we observe the development of appreciable coherence as a prominent finite-size effect, which manifests as bimodality in the momentum distribution of the system. At $T_{BKT}$ algebraic decay of off-diagonal correlations occurs near the trap center with an exponent of 0.25, as expected for the uniform system. Our results characterize the low temperature phase diagram for a trapped quasi-2D Bose gas and are consistent with observations made in recent experiments.

Kelvin-Tkachenko waves of few-vortex arrays in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We have calculated the low-lying elementary excitations of three-dimensional few-vortex arrays in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. The number of different Kelvin-Tkachenko vortex wave branches matches the number of vortices in the condensate. The lowest odd-parity modes exhibit superfluid gyroscopic vortex motion. Experimentally, these modes could be excited and observed individually or in connection with the formation and decay of quantum turbulence.

Rotating Dipolar Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates

We have computed phase diagrams for rotating spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. Spin textures including vortex sheets, staggered half-quantum- and skyrmion vortex lattices and higher order topological defects have been found. These systems exhibit both superfluidity and magnetic crystalline ordering and they could be realized experimentally by imparting angular momentum in the condensate.

Spin textures in condensates with large dipole moments

We have solved numerically the ground states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of dipolar interparticle forces using a semiclassical approach. Our motivation is to model, in particular, the spontaneous spin textures emerging in quantum gases with large dipole moments, such as 52Cr or Dy condensates, or ultracold gases consisting of polar molecules. For a pancake-shaped harmonic (optical) potential, we present the ground state phase diagram spanned by the strength of the nonlinear coupling and dipolar interactions. In an elongated harmonic potential, we observe a novel helical spin texture. The textures calculated according to the semiclassical model in the absence of external polarizing fields are predominantly analogous to previously reported results for a ferromagnetic F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, suggesting that the spin textures arising from the dipolar forces are largely independent of the value of the quantum number F or the origin of the dipolar interactions.

Stable Fractional Vortices in the Cyclic States of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We propose methods to create fractional vortices in the cyclic state of an F = 2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate by manipulating its internal spin structure using pulsed microwave and laser fields. The stability of such vortices is studied as a function of the rotation frequency of the confining harmonic trap both in pancake and cigar shaped condensates. We find a range of parameters for which the so-called 1/3-vortex state is energetically favorable. Such fractional vortices could be created in condensates of 87Rb atoms using current experimental techniques facilitating probing of topological defects with non-Abelian statistics.

Vortex waves in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We have theoretically studied vortex waves of Bose-Einstein condensates in elongated harmonic traps. Our focus is on the axisymmetric varicose waves and helical Kelvin waves of singly quantized vortex lines. Growth and decay dynamics of both types of vortex waves are discussed. We propose a method to experimentally create these vortex waves on demand.

Kelvin Waves of Quantized Vortex Lines in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

We have theoretically investigated Kelvin waves of quantized vortex lines in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Counterrotating perturbation induces an elliptical instability to the initially straight vortex line, driven by a parametric resonance between a quadrupole mode and a pair of Kelvin modes of opposite momenta. Subsequently, Kelvin waves rapidly decay to longer wavelengths emitting sound waves in the process. We present a modified Kelvin wave dispersion relation for trapped superfluids and propose a simple method to excite Kelvin waves of specific wave number.

Superfluidity of an interacting trapped quasi-2D Bose gas

We investigate the harmonically trapped interacting Bose gas in a quasi-2D geometry using the classical field method. The system exhibits quasi-long-range order and non-classical rotational inertia at temperatures below the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless cross-over to the superfluid state. In particular, we compute the scissors-mode oscillation frequencies and find that the irrotational mode changes its frequency as the temperature is sweeped across the cross-over thus providing microscopic evidence for the emergence of superfluidity.

Angular momentum exchange between coherent light and matter fields

Full, three dimensional, time-dependent simulations are presented demonstrating the quantized transfer of angular momentum to a Bose-Einstein condensate from a laser carrying orbital angular momentum in a Laguerre-Gaussian mode. The process is described in terms of coherent Bragg scattering of atoms from a chiral optical lattice. The transfer efficiency and the angular momentum content of the output coupled vortex state are analyzed and compared with a recent experiment.

Thermal activation of vortex-antivortex pairs in quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates

Here we show, by performing ab initio classical field simulations that two distinct superfluid phases, separated by thermal vortex-antivortex pair creation, exist in experimentally producible quasi-2D Bose gas. These results resolve the debate on the nature of the low temperature phase(s) of a trapped interacting 2D Bose gas.

Transition from Bose-Einstein Condensate to Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase

We obtain a phase diagram for a trapped two-dimensional ultra-cold Bose gas. We find a critical temperature above which the free energy of a state with a pair of vortices of opposite circulation is lower than the one for a vortex-free Bose-Einstein condensed ground state. We identify three distinct phases which are, in order of increasing temperature; a phase coherent Bose-Einstein condensate, a vortex pair plasma with a fluctuating condensate phase, and a thermal Bose gas. The existence of the vortex pair phase could be verified using current experimental setups.

Observations on Sound Propagation in Rapidly Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

Repulsive laser potential pulses applied to vortex lattices of rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates create propagating density waves which we have observed experimentally and modeled computationally to high accuracy. We have observed a rich variety of dynamical phenomena ranging from interference effects and shock-wave formation to anisotropic sound propagation.

Giant Vortex Lattice Deformations in Rapidly Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

We have performed numerical simulations of giant vortex structures in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates within the Gross-Pitaevskii formalism. We reproduce the qualitative features, such as oscillation of the giant vortex core area, formation of toroidal density hole, and the precession of giant vortices, observed in the recent experiment [Engels \emph{et.al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 170405 (2003)]. We provide a mechanism which quantitatively explains the observed core oscillation phenomenon. We demonstrate the clear distinction between the mechanism of atom removal and a repulsive pinning potential in creating giant vortices. In addition, we have been able to simulate the transverse Tkachenko vortex lattice vibrations.

Temperature Dependence of Vortex Nucleation in Gaseous Bose-Einstein Condensates

The formation of quantized vortices in trapped, gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates is considered. The thermodynamic stability of vortex states and the essential role of the surface excitations as a route for vortex penetration into the condensate are discussed. Special focus is on finite-temperature effects of the vortex nucleation process. It is concluded that the critical angular frequencies for exciting surface modes with the relevant multipolarities yield, also at finite temperatures, the appropriate thresholds for the nucleation of vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates, in fair agreement with the recent experiments.

Surface modes and vortex formation in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperatures

The surface mode spectrum is computed self-consistently for dilute Bose-Einstein condensates, providing the temperature dependence of the surface mode induced vortex nucleation frequency. Both the thermodynamic critical frequency for vortex stability and the nucleation frequency implied by the surface excitations increase as the critical condensation temperature is approached from below. The multipolarity of the destabilizing surface excitation decreases with increasing temperature. The computed finite-temperature critical frequencies support the experimental observations and the zero-temperature calculations for vortex nucleation.

Stability of multiquantum vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates

Multiply quantized vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates are studied using the Bogoliubov theory. Suitable combinations of a localized pinning potential and external rotation of the system are found to energetically stabilize, both locally and globally, vortices with multiple circulation quanta. We present a phase diagram for stable multiply quantized vortices in terms of the angular rotation frequency and the width of the pinning potential. We argue that multiquantum vortices could be experimentally created using these two expedients.
