Factorization of shell-model ground-states

We present a new method that accurately approximates the shell-model ground-state by products of suitable states. The optimal factors are determined by a variational principle and result from the solution of rather low-dimensional eigenvalue problems. The power of this method is demonstrated by computations of ground-states and low-lying excitations in sd-shell and pf-shell nuclei.

DMRG Study of Critical Behavior of the Spin-1/2 Alternating Heisenberg Chain

We investigate the critical behavior of the S=1/2 alternating Heisenberg chain using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The ground-state energy per spin and singlet-triplet energy gap are determined for a range of alternations. Our results for the approach of the ground-state energy to the uniform chain limit are well described by a power law with exponent p=1.45. The singlet-triplet gap is also well described by a power law, with a critical exponent of p=0.73, half of the ground-state energy exponent. The renormalization group predictions of power laws with logarithmic corrections can also accurately describe our data provided that a surprisingly large scale parameter is present in the logarithm.

Ground-state properties of hard core bosons in one-dimensional harmonic traps

The one-particle density matrices for hard core bosons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are computed numerically for systems with up to 160 bosons. Diagonalization of the density matrix shows that the many-body ground state is not Bose-Einstein condensed. The ground state occupation, the amplitude of the lowest natural orbital, and the zero momentum peak height scale as powers of the particle number, and the corresponding exponents are related to each other. Close to its diagonal, the density matrix for hard core bosons is similar to the one of noninteracting fermions.

Experimental Test of a Trace Formula for a Chaotic Three Dimensional Microwave Cavity

We have measured resonance spectra in a superconducting microwave cavity with the shape of a three-dimensional generalized Bunimovich stadium billiard and analyzed their spectral fluctuation properties. The experimental length spectrum exhibits contributions from periodic orbits of non-generic modes and from unstable periodic orbit of the underlying classical system. It is well reproduced by our theoretical calculations based on the trace formula derived by Balian and Duplantier for chaotic electromagnetic cavities.

Sympathetic cooling and growth of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study two sets of rate equations for sympathetic cooling of harmonically trapped Bose gases. Calculations for mixtures of Na-Rb and Li-Cs show that both sets yield similar results for the cooling times. The equilibration rates are in fair agreement with each other and differ considerably from classical rates. The onset of Bose-Einstein condensation is rather sudden and non-exponential in time, and the growth of the condensate differs for the two different mixtures we studied.

Invariant manifolds and collective motion in many-body systems

Collective modes of interacting many-body systems can be related to the motion on classically invariant manifolds. We introduce suitable coordinate systems. These coordinates are Cartesian in position and momentum space. They are collective since several components vanish for motion on the invariant manifold. We make a connection to Zickendraht's collective coordinates and also obtain shear modes. The importance of collective configurations depends on the stability of the manifold. We present an example of quantum collective motion on the manifold

On phases in weakly interacting finite Bose systems

We study precursors of thermal phase transitions in finite systems of interacting Bose gases. For weakly repulsive interactions there is a phase transition to the one-vortex state. The distribution of zeros of the partition function indicates that this transition is first order, and the precursors of the phase transition are already displayed in systems of a few dozen bosons. Systems of this size do not exhibit new phases as more vortices are added to the system.

Rate Equations for Sympathetic Cooling of Trapped Bosons or Fermions

We derive two different sets of rate equations for sympathetic cooling of harmonically trapped Bosons or Fermions. The rate equations are obtained from a master equation derived earlier by Lewenstein et al. [Phys. Rev. A 51 (1995) 4617] by means of decoherence and ergodicity arguments. We show analytically that the thermal equilibrium state is a stationary solution of our rate equation. We present analytical results for the rate coefficients which are needed to solve the rate equations, and we give approximate formulae that permit their computation in practice. We solve the two sets of rate equations numerically and compare the results. The cooling times obtained in both approaches agree very well. The equilibration rates show fair agreement.

Invariant Manifolds and Collective Coordinates

We introduce suitable coordinate systems for interacting many-body systems with invariant manifolds. These are Cartesian in coordinate and momentum space and chosen such that several components are identically zero for motion on the invariant manifold. In this sense these coordinates are collective. We make a connection to Zickendraht's collective coordinates and present certain configurations of few-body systems where rotations and vibrations decouple from single-particle motion. These configurations do not depend on details of the interaction.

On the Special Role of Symmetric Periodic Orbits in a Chaotic System

After early work of Henon it has become folk knowledge that symmetric periodic orbits are of particular importance. We reinforce this belief by additional studies and we further find that invariant closed symplectic submanifolds caused by discrete symmetries prove to be an important complement to the long known role of the orbits. The latter have particular importance in semi-classics. Based on the structural stability of hyperbolic horseshoes we give an argument that opens an avenue to the understanding of these facts.

Scars of Invariant Manifolds in Interacting Chaotic Few-Body Systems

We present a novel extension of the concept of scars for the wave functions of classically chaotic few-body systems of identical particles with rotation and permutation symmetry. Generically there exist manifolds in classical phase space which are invariant under the action of a common subgroup of these two symmetries. Such manifolds are associated with highly symmetric configurations. If sufficiently stable, the quantum motion on such manifolds displays a notable enhancement of the revival in the autocorrelation function which is not directly associated with individual periodic orbits. Rather, it indicates some degree of localization around an invariant manifold which has collective characteristics that should be experimentally observable.

Two loop results from one loop computations and non perturbative solutions of exact evolution equations

A nonperturbative method is proposed for the approximative solution of the exact evolution equation which describes the scale dependence of the effective average action. It consists of a combination of exact evolution equations for independent couplings with renormalization group improved one loop expressions of secondary couplings. Our method is illustrated by an example: We compute the beta-function of the quartic coupling lambda of an O(N) symmetric scalar field theory to order lambda^3 as well as the anomalous dimension to order lambda^2 using only one loop expressions and find agreement with the two loop perturbation theory. We also treat the case of very strong coupling and confirm the existence of a "triviality bound".
