Decoupling Structure and Elasticity in Colloidal Gels Under Isotropic Compression

We exploit the controlled drying of millimeter-sized gel beads to investigate isotropic compression of colloidal fractal gels. Using a custom dynamic light scattering setup, we demonstrate that stresses imposed by drying on the bead surface propagate homogeneously throughout the gel volume, inducing plastic rearrangements. We find that the Young modulus and yield stress of the gels increase monotonically with the instantaneous colloid volume fraction, $\phi$, exhibiting a mechanical response that depends solely on $\phi$, regardless of the drying history. In striking contrast, small-angle X-ray scattering reveals that the gel microstructure retains a strong memory of its initial state, depending on both $\varphi$ and the entire compression pathway. Our findings challenge the prevailing paradigm of a one-to-one relationship between microstructure and elasticity in colloidal fractal gels, opening new avenues for independent control over the structural and mechanical properties of soft materials.

Probing microscopic dynamics in a uni-axially strained polymer network

We present a new apparatus that probes simultaneously the macroscopic mechanical response and the microscopic motion in polymer networks under uni-axial strain. The setup leverages photon correlation imaging, a space- and time-resolved dynamic light scattering method, to measure the dynamics along three orthogonal directions and on two distinct length scales, from tens of nanometers to a couple of microns. We show how to avoid artifacts due to scattering from the surface of the polymer films and derive a theoretical expression for the intensity correlation function due to a purely affine deformation, showing that the setup sensitivity may be simply tuned by varying the acceptance angle of the collection optics. Finally, we demonstrate the capabilities of the setup by investigating the microscopic dynamics of a poly(dimethylsiloxne) polymer network under tensile strain in the linear regime. We find that non-affine dynamics dominate on length scales smaller than a few microns, above which the affine response is recovered. Surprisingly, the cross-over length separating the non-affine and affine regimes \textit{increases} upon decreasing the applied tensile strain.

A novel setup coupling space-resolved dynamic light scattering and rheometetry unveils the heterogeneous flow field and non-affine dynamics in startup shear of a gel

We present a new light scattering setup coupled to a commercial rheometer operated in the plate-plate geometry. The apparatus allows the microscopic dynamics to be measured, discriminating between the contribution due to the affine deformation and additional mechanisms, such as plasticity. Light backscattered by the sample is collected using an imaging optical layout, thereby allowing the average flow velocity and the microscopic dynamics to be probed with both spatial and temporal resolution. We successfully test the setup by measuring the Brownian diffusion and flow velocity of diluted colloidal suspensions, both at rest and under shear. The potentiality of the apparatus are explored in the startup shear of a biogel. For small shear deformations, $γ\le 2\%$, the rheological response of the gel is linear. However, striking deviations from affine flow are seen from the very onset of deformation, due to temporally and spatially heterogeneous rearrangements bearing intriguing similarities with a stick-slip process.
