Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Complexity in Mean-Field Spin-Glass Models: Ising $p$-spin

The Complexity of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) solutions of the Ising $p$-spin is investigated in the temperature regime where the equilibrium phase is one step Replica Symmetry Breaking. Two solutions of the resulting saddle point equations are found. One is supersymmetric (SUSY) and includes the equilibrium value of the free energy while the other is non-SUSY. The two solutions cross exactly at a value of the free energy where the replicon eigenvalue is zero; at low free energy the complexity is described by the SUSY solution while at high free energy it is described by the non-SUSY solution. In particular the non-SUSY solution describes the total number of solutions, like in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. The relevant TAP solutions corresponding to the non-SUSY solution share the same feature of the corresponding solutions in the SK model, in particular their Hessian has a vanishing isolated eigenvalue. The TAP solutions corresponding to the SUSY solution, instead, are well separated minima.

Quenched Computation of the Complexity of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Model

The quenched computation of the complexity in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model is presented. A modified Full Replica Symmetry Breaking Ansatz is introduced in order to study the complexity dependence on the free energy. Such an Ansatz corresponds to require Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin supersymmetry. The complexity computed this way is the Legendre transform of the free energy averaged over the quenched disorder. The stability analysis shows that this complexity is inconsistent at any free energy level but the equilibirum one. The further problem of building a physically well defined solution not invariant under supersymmetry and predicting an extensive number of metastable states is also discussed.

On Supersymmetry Breaking in the Computation of the Complexity

We study the consequences of supersymmetry breaking in the computation of the number of solutions of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) equations. We show that Kurchan argument that proves the vanishing of the prefactor of the Bray and Moore saddle point for the total number of solutions can be extended to solutions at any given free energy. We also provide a new simple argument for the vanishing of the prefactor and use it to prove that the isolated eigenvalue recently considered by Aspelmeier, Bray and Moore is exactly zero in the BM theory because of supersymmetry breaking. The behavior of the eigenvector of the isolated eigenvalue at the lower band edge is also considered.

On Spin-Glass Complexity

We study the quenched complexity in spin-glass mean-field models satisfying the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin supersymmetry. The outcome of such study, consistent with recent numerical results, allows, in principle, to conjecture the absence of any supersymmetric contribution to the complexity in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. The same analysis can be applied to any model with a Full Replica Symmetry Breaking phase, e.g. the Ising $p$-spin model below the Gardner temperature. The existence of different solutions, breaking the supersymmetry, is also discussed.

Direct Searches of New Physics at CLIC

The multi-TeV e+e- collider CLIC may allow for the direct study of new neutral gauge bosons or Kaluza-Klein states in the TeV range. We discuss some of the experimental aspects for the study of such resonances. Further we discuss briefly the effects of soft branes in scenarios with Large Extra Dimensions, and the production of Black Holes at CLIC.

The Complexity of the Spherical $p$-spin spin glass model, revisited

Some questions concerning the calculation of the number of ``physical'' (metastable) states or complexity of the spherical $p$-spin spin glass model are reviewed and examined further. Particular attention is focused on the general calculation procedure which is discussed step-by-step.

Complexity of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Model in the Annealed Approximation

A careful critical analysis of the complexity, at the annealed level, of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model has been performed. The complexity functional is proved to be always invariant under the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin supersymmetry, disregarding the formulation used to define it. We consider two different saddle points of such functional, one satisfying the supersymmetry [A. Cavagna {\it et al.}, J. Phys. A {\bf 36} (2003) 1175] and the other one breaking it [A.J. Bray and M.A. Moore, J. Phys. C {\bf 13} (1980) L469]. We review the previews studies on the subject, linking different perspectives and pointing out some inadequacies and even inconsistencies in both solutions.

On the Parisi-Toulouse hypothesis for the spin glass phase in mean-field theory

We consider the spin-glass phase of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in the presence of a magnetic field. The series expansion of the Parisi function $q(x)$ is computed at high orders in powers of $τ=T_c-T$ and $H$. We find that none of the Parisi-Toulouse scaling hypotheses on the $q(x)$ behavior strictly holds, although some of them are violated only at high orders. The series is resummed yielding results in the whole spin-glass phase which are compared with those from a numerical evaluation of the $q(x)$. At the high order considered, the transition turns out to be third order on the Almeida-Thouless line, a result which is confirmed rigorously computing the expansion of the solution near the line at finite $τ$. The transition becomes smoother for infinitesimally small field while it is third order at strictly zero field.

Analysis of the infinity-replica symmetry breaking solution of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

In this work we analyse the Parisi's infinity-replica symmetry breaking solution of the Sherrington - Kirkpatrick model without external field using high order perturbative expansions. The predictions are compared with those obtained from the numerical solution of the infinity-replica symmetry breaking equations which are solved using a new pseudo-spectral code which allows for very accurate results. With this methods we are able to get more insight into the analytical properties of the solutions. We are also able to determine numerically the end-point x_{max} of the plateau of q(x) and find that lim_{T --> 0} x_{max}(T) > 0.5.

Report of the Beyond the MSSM Subgroup for the Tevatron Run II SUSY/Higgs Workshop

There are many low-energy models of supersymmetry breaking parameters which are motivated by theoretical and experimental considerations. Here, we discuss some of the lesser-known theories of low-energy supersymmetry, and outline their phenomenological consequences. In some cases, these theories have more gauge symmetry or particle content than the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In other cases, the parameters of the Lagrangian are unusual compared to commonly accepted norms (e.g., Wino LSP, heavy gluino LSP, light gluino, etc.). The phenomenology of supersymmetry varies greatly between the different models. Correspondingly, particular aspects of the detectors assume greater or lesser importance. Detection of supersymmetry and the determination of all parameters may well depend upon having the widest possible view of supersymmetry phenomenology.

Searching for R-Parity Violation at Run-II of the Tevatron

We present an outlook for possible discovery of supersymmetry with broken R-parity at Run II of the Tevatron. We first present a review of the literature and an update of the experimental bounds. In turn we then discuss the following processes: 1. Resonant slepton production followed by R-parity violating decay, (a) via $LQD^c$ and (b) via $LLE^c$. 2. How to distinguish resonant slepton production from $Z'$ or $W'$ production. 3. Resonant slepton production followed by the decay to neutralino LSP, which decays via $LQD^c$. 4. Resonant stop production followed by the decay to a chargino, which cascades to the neutralino LSP. 5. Gluino pair production followed by the cascade decay to charm squarks which decay directly via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 6. Squark pair production followed by the cascade decay to the neutralino LSP which decays via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 7. MSSM pair production followed by the cascade decay to the LSP which decays (a) via $LLE^c$, (b) via $LQD^c$, and (c) via $U^cD^cD^c$, respectively. 8. Top quark and top squark decays in spontaneous R-parity violation.

Constraints on Light Gluinos from Tevatron Dijet Data

The effects of light, long-lived gluinos on $2\to 2$ processes at hadron colliders are examined. Such particles can mediate single squark resonant production via $q\glu\to\sq\to q\glu$ which would significantly modify the dijet data sample. We find that squark masses in the range $130<m_{\tilde q}< 694, 595, 573$ GeV are excluded for gluino masses of $0.4, 1.3, 5.0$ GeV from existing UA2 and Tevatron data on dijet bump searches and angular distributions. Run II of the Tevatron has the capability of excluding this scenario for squark masses up to $\sim 1$ TeV.

Anomalous Gauge Boson Couplings

The measurement of anomalous gauge boson self couplings is reviewed for a variety of present and planned accelerators. Sensitivities are compared for these accelerators using models based on the effective Lagrangian approach. The sensitivities described here are for measurement of generic parameters kappa_v, lambda_v, etc., defined in the text. Pre-LHC measurements will not probe these couplings to precision better than O(1/10). The LHC should be sensitive to better than O(1/100), while a future NLC should achieve sensitivity of O(1/1000) to O(1/10000) for center of mass energies ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 TeV.
