Three-dimensional magnetic and abundance mapping of the cool Ap star HD 24712 II. Two-dimensional Magnetic Doppler Imaging in all four Stokes parameters

Aims: We present a magnetic Doppler imaging study from all Stokes parameters of the cool, chemically peculiar star HD 24712. This is the very first such analysis performed at a resolving power exceeding 10^5. Methods: The analysis is performed on the basis of phase-resolved observations of line profiles in all four Stokes parameters obtained with the HARPSpol instrument attached at the 3.6-m ESO telescope. We use the magnetic Doppler imaging code, INVERS10, which allows us to derive the magnetic field geometry and surface chemical abundance distributions simultaneously. Results: We report magnetic maps of HD 24712 recovered from a selection of FeI, FeII, NdIII, and NaI lines with strong polarization signals in all Stokes parameters. Our magnetic maps successfully reproduce most of the details available from our observation data. We used these magnetic field maps to produce abundance distribution map of Ca. This new analysis shows that the surface magnetic field of HD 24712 has a dominant dipolar component with a weak contribution from higher-order harmonics. The surface abundance distributions of Fe and Ca show enhancements near the magnetic equator with an underabundant patch at the visible (positive) magnetic pole; Nd is highly abundant around the positive magnetic pole. The Na abundance map shows a high overabundance around the negative magnetic pole. Conclusions: Based on our investigation and similar recent four Stokes parameter magnetic mapping studies, we present a tentative evidence for the hypothesis that Ap stars with dipole-like fields are older than stars with magnetic fields that have more small-scale structures. We find that our abundance maps are inconsistent with recent theoretical calculations of atomic diffusion in presence of magnetic fields.

Echography of young stars reveals their evolution

We demonstrate that a seismic analysis of stars in their earliest evolutionary phases is a powerful method to identify young stars and distinguish their evolutionary states. The early star that is born from the gravitational collapse of a molecular cloud reaches at some point sufficient temperature, mass and luminosity to be detected. Accretion stops and the pre-main sequence star that emerges is nearly fully convective and chemically homogeneous. It will continue to contract gravitationally until the density and temperature in the core are high enough to start nuclear burning of hydrogen. We show that there is a relationship between detected pulsation properties for a sample of young stars and their evolutionary status illustrating the potential of asteroseismology for the early evolutionary phases.

Multi-element Doppler imaging of the CP2 star HD 3980

In atmospheres of magnetic main-sequence stars, the diffusion of chemical elements leads to a number of observed anomalies, such as abundance spots across the stellar surface. The aim of this study was to derive a detailed picture of the surface abundance distribution of the magnetic chemically peculiar star HD 3980. Based on high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic observations of the magnetic A-type star HD 3980, the inhomogeneous surface distribution of 13 chemical elements (Li, O, Si, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, and Gd) has been reconstructed. The INVERS12 code was used to invert the rotational variability in line profiles to elemental surface distributions. Assuming a centered, dominantly dipolar magnetic field configuration, we find that Li, O, Mg, Pr, and Nd are mainly concentrated in the area of the magnetic poles and depleted in the regions around the magnetic equator. The high abundance spots of Si, La, Ce, Eu, and Gd are located between the magnetic poles and the magnetic equator. Except for La, which is clearly depleted in the area of the magnetic poles, no obvious correlation with the magnetic field has been found for these elements otherwise. Ca, Cr, and Fe appear enhanced along the rotational equator and the area around the magnetic poles. The intersection between the magnetic and the rotational equator constitutes an exception, especially for Ca and Cr, which are depleted in that region. No obvious correlation between the theoretically predicted abundance patterns and those determined in this study could be found. This can be attributed to a lack of up-to-date theoretical models, especially for rare earth elements.

Discovery of new roAp pulsators in the UVES survey of cool magnetic Ap stars

We have carried out a survey of short-period pulsations among a sample of carefully chosen cool Ap stars using time-resolved observations with the UVES spectrometer at the ESO 8-m VLT telescope. Here we report the discovery of pulsations with amplitudes 50-100 m/s and periods 7-12 min in HD132205, HD148593 and HD151860. These objects are therefore established as new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars. In addition, we independently confirm the presence of pulsations in HD69013, HD96237 and HD143487 and detect, for the first time, radial velocity oscillations in two previously known photometric roAp stars HD119027 and HD185256. At the same time, no pulsation variability is found for HD5823, HD178892 and HD185204. All of the newly discovered roAp stars were previously classified as non-pulsating based on the low-precision ground-based photometric surveys. This shows that such observations cannot be used to reliably distinguish between pulsating and non-pulsating stars and that all cool Ap stars may harbor p-mode pulsations of different amplitudes.

Regular frequency patterns in the young delta Scuti star HD 261711 observed by the CoRoT and MOST satellites

We concentrate on an asteroseismological study of HD 261711, a rather hot delta Scuti type pulsating member of the young open cluster NGC 2264 located at the blue border of the instability region. HD 261711 was discovered to be a pre-main sequence delta Scuti star using the time series photometry obtained by the MOST satellite in 2006. High-precision, time-series photometry of HD 261711 was obtained by the MOST and CoRoT satellites in 4 separate new observing runs that are put into context with the star's fundamental atmospheric parameters obtained from spectroscopy. With the new MOST data set from 2011/12 and the two CoRoT light curves from 2008 and 2011/12, the delta Scuti variability was confirmed and regular groups of frequencies were discovered. The two pulsation frequencies identified in the data from the first MOST observing run in 2006 are confirmed and 23 new delta Scuti-type frequencies were discovered using the CoRoT data. Weighted average frequencies for each group are related to l=0 and l=1 p-modes. Evidence for amplitude modulation of the frequencies in two groups is seen. The effective temperature was derived to be 8600$\pm$200 K, log g is 4.1$\pm$0.2, and the projected rotational velocity is 53$\pm$1km/s. Using our Teff value and the radius of 1.8$\pm$0.5 Rsun derived from SED fitting, we get a log L/Lsun of 1.20$\pm$0.14 which agrees well to the seismologically determined values of 1.65 Rsun and, hence, a log L/Lsun of 1.13. The radial velocity of 14$\pm$2 km/s we derived for HD 261711, confirms the star's membership to NGC 2264. Our asteroseismic models suggest that HD 261711 is a delta Scuti-type star close to the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) with a mass of 1.8 to 1.9Msun. HD 261711 is either a young ZAMS star or a late PMS star just before the onset of hydrogen-core burning.

gamma Doradus pulsation in two pre-main sequence stars discovered by CoRoT

Pulsations in pre-main sequence stars have been discovered several times within the last years. But nearly all of these pulsators are of delta Scuti-type. gamma Doradus-type pulsation in young stars has been predicted by theory, but lack observational evidence. We present the investigation of variability caused by rotation and (gammaDoradus-type) pulsation in two pre-main sequence members of the young open cluster NGC2264 using high-precision time series photometry from the CoRoT satellite and dedicated high-resolution spectroscopy. Time series photometry of NGC2264VAS20 and NGC 2264VAS87 was obtained by the CoRoT satellite during the dedicated short run SRa01 in March 2008. NGC2264VAS87 was re-observed by CoRoT during the short run SRa05 in December 2011 and January 2012. Frequency analysis was conducted using Period04 and SigSpec. The spectral analysis was performed using equivalent widths and spectral synthesis. The frequency analysis yielded 10 and 14 intrinsic frequencies for NGC2264VAS20 and NGC2264VAS 87, respectively, in the range from 0 to 1.5c/d which are attributed to be caused by a combination of rotation and pulsation. The effective temperatures were derived to be 6380$\pm$150K for NGC2264VAS20 and 6220$\pm$150K for NGC2264VAS87. Membership of the two stars to the cluster is confirmed independently using X-ray fluxes, radial velocity measurements and proper motions available in the literature. The derived Li abundances of log n(Li)=3.34 and 3.54 for NGC2264VAS20 and NGC2264VAS87, respectively, are in agreement with the Li abundance for other stars in NGC2264 of similar Teff reported in the literature. We conclude that the two objects are members of NGC2264 and therefore are in their pre-main sequence evolutionary stage. Assuming that part of their variability is caused by pulsation, these two stars might be the first pre-main sequence gamma Doradus candidates.

Fundamental parameters of bright Ap stars from wide-range energy distributions and advanced atmospheric models

As a well-established procedure for the vast majority of normal main-sequence stars, determination of atmospheric and stellar parameters turns to be a challenging process in case of magnetic chemically peculiar stars. Inhomogeneous distribution of chemical elements and strong magnetic fields make most of the standard photometric and spectroscopic calibrations inapplicable for this class of stars. In this work we make use of available observed energy distributions calibrated to absolute units, stellar parallaxes, high-resolution spectroscopic observations, and advanced stellar atmosphere models to derive parameters of three bright Ap stars: 33Lib, gammaEqu, and betaCrB. Model atmospheres and fluxes were computed with the LLmodels code. Synth3 and Synthmag codes were used to compute profiles of individual spectral lines involved in abundance analysis. For each of the stars, we construct a self-consistent atmospheric models assuming normal and depleted helium compositions and derive empirically stratification profiles of certain elements. The effective temperatures and surface gravities are found from the simultaneous fit to spectroscopic, photometric, and spectrophotometric observations calibrated to absolute units. We show that using advanced model atmospheres and accurate stellar parallaxes allows one to derive stellar radii with high accuracy, and these are consistent with those obtained from independent but more complicated interferometric observations.

Discovery of the longest-period rapidly oscillating Ap star HD177765

We present the discovery of a long-period, rapidly oscillating Ap star, HD177765. Using high-resolution time-series observations obtained with UVES at the ESO VLT telescope, we found radial velocity variations with amplitudes 7-150 m/s and a period of 23.6 min, exceeding that of any previously known roAp star. The largest pulsation amplitudes are observed for Eu III, Ce III and for the narrow core of Halpha. We derived the atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of HD177765, showing this star to be similar to other long-period roAp stars. Comparison with theoretical pulsational models indicates an advanced evolutionary state for HD177765. Abundance analyses of this and other roAp stars suggest a systematic variation with age of the rare-earth line anomalies seen in cool Ap stars.

Pulsation models for the roAp star HD 134214

Precise time-series photometry with the MOST satellite has led to identification of 10 pulsation frequencies in the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 134214. We have fitted the observed frequencies with theoretical frequencies of axisymmetric modes in a grid of stellar models with dipole magnetic fields. We find that, among models with a standard composition of $(X,Z) = (0.70,0.02)$ and with suppressed convection, eigenfrequencies of a $1.65\,{\rm M}_\odot$ model with $\log T_{\rm eff} = 3.858$ and a polar magnetic field strength of 4.1kG agree best with the observed frequencies. We identify the observed pulsation frequency with the largest amplitude as a deformed dipole ($\ell = 1$) mode, and the four next-largest-amplitude frequencies as deformed $\ell = 2$ modes. These modes have a radial quasi-node in the outermost atmospheric layers ($τ\sim 10^{-3}$). Although the model frequencies agree roughly with observed ones, they are all above the acoustic cut-off frequency for the model atmosphere and hence are predicted to be damped. The excitation mechanism for the pulsations of HD 134214 is not clear, but further investigation of these modes may be a probe of the atmospheric structure in this magnetic chemically peculiar star.

The accuracy of stellar atmospheric parameter determinations: a case study with HD 32115 and HD 37594

We present detailed parameter determinations of two chemically normal late A-type stars, HD 32115 and HD 37594, to uncover the reasons behind large discrepancies between two previous analyses of these stars performed with a semi-automatic procedure and a "classical" analysis. Our study is based on high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained at the McDonald Observatory. Our method is based on the simultaneous use of all available observables: multicolor photometry, pressure-sensitive magnesium lines, metallic lines and Balmer line profiles. Our final set of fundamental parameters fits, within the error bars, all available observables. It differs from the published results obtained with a semi-automatic procedure. A direct comparison between our new observational material and the spectra previously used by other authors shows that the quality of the data is not the origin of the discrepancies. As the two stars require a substantial macroturbulence velocity to fit the line profiles, we concluded that neglecting this additional broadening in the semi-automatic analysis is one origin of discrepancy. The use of FeI excitation equilibrium and of the Fe ionisation equilibrium, to derive effective temperature and surface gravity, respectively, neglecting all other indicators leads to a systematically erroneously high effective temperature. We deduce that the results obtained using only one parameter indicator might be biased and that those results need to be cautiously taken when performing further detailed analyses, such as modelling of the asteroseismic frequencies or characterising transiting exoplanets.

Realistic model atmosphere and revised abundances of the coolest Ap star HD101065

Among the known Ap stars, HD101065 is probably one of the most interesting objects, demonstrating very rich spectra of rare-earth elements (REE). Strongly peculiar photometric parameters of this star that can not be fully reproduced by any modern theoretical calculations, even those accounting for realistic chemistry of its atmosphere. In this study we investigate a role of missing REE line opacity and construct a self-consistent atmospheric model based on accurate abundance and chemical stratification analysis. We employed the LLmodels stellar model atmosphere code together with DDAFit and SynthMag software packages to derive homogeneous and stratified abundances for 52 chemical elements and to construct a self-consistent model of HD101065 atmosphere. The opacity in REE lines is accounted for in details, by using up-to-date extensive theoretical calculations. We show that REE elements play a key role in the radiative energy balance in the atmosphere of HD101065, leading to the strong suppression of the Balmer jump and energy redistribution very different from that of normal stars. Introducing new line lists of REEs allowed us to reproduce, for the first time, spectral energy distribution of HD101065 and achieve a better agreement between the unusually small observed Strömgren c1 index and the model predictions. Using combined photometric and spectroscopic approaches and based on the iterative procedure of abundance and stratification analysis we find effective temperature of HD101065 to be Teff=6400K.

Magnetic Doppler imaging of the roAp star HD 24712

We present the first magnetic Doppler images of a rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star. We deduce information about magnetic field geometry and abundance distributions of a number of chemical elements on the surface of the hitherto best studied roAp star, HD 24712, using the magnetic Doppler imaging (MDI) code, INVERS10, which allows us to reconstruct simultaneously and consistently the magnetic field geometry and elemental abundance distributions on a stellar surface. For this purpose we analyse time series spectra obtained in Stokes I and V parameters with the SOFIN polarimeter at the Nordic Optical Telescope and recover surface abundance structures of sixteen different chemical elements, respectively ions, including Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy. For the rare earth elements (REE) Pr and Nd separate maps were obtained using lines of the first and the second ionization stage. We find and confirm a clear dipolar structure of the surface magnetic field and an unexpected correlation of elemental abundances with respect to this field: one group of elements accumulates solely where the positive magnetic pole is visible, whereas the other group avoids this region and is enhanced where the magnetic equatorial region dominates the visible stellar surface. We also observe relative shifts of abundance enhancement- or depletion regions between the various elements exhibiting otherwise similar behaviour.

Time-resolved photometric and spectroscopic analysis of a luminous Ap star HD103498

We present the results on the photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of a luminous Ap star HD103498. The time-series photometric observations were carried out on 17 nights using three-channel fast photometer attached to the 1.04-m optical telescope at ARIES, Nainital. The photometric data of five nights of year 2007 show clear signature of 15-min periodicity. However, the follow-up observations during 2007--2009 could not repeated any such periodicity. To confirm the photometric light variations, the time-series spectroscopic observations were carried out with the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) at La Palma on February 2, 2009. Any radial velocity variations were absent in this data set which is in full agreement with the photometric observations taken near the same night. Model atmosphere and abundance analysis of HD103498 show that the star is evolved from the Main Sequence and its atmospheric abundances are similar to two other evolved Ap stars HD133792 and HD204411: large overabundances of Si, Cr, and Fe and moderate overabundances of the rare-earth elements. These chemical properties and a higher effective temperature distinguish HD103498 from any known roAp star.

The chemical abundance analysis of normal early A- and late B-type stars

Modern spectroscopy of early-type stars often aims at studying complex physical phenomena. Comparatively less attention is paid to identifying and studying the "normal" A- and B-type stars and testing how the basic atomic parameters and standard spectral analysis allow one to fit the observations. We wish to stablish whether the chemical composition of the solar photosphere can be regarded as a reference for early A- and late B-type stars. We have obtained optical high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of three slowly rotating early-type stars (HD 145788, 21 Peg and pi Cet) that show no obvious sign of chemical peculiarity, and performed a very accurate LTE abundance analysis of up to 38 ions of 26 elements (for 21 Peg), using a vast amount of spectral lines visible in the spectral region covered by our spectra. We provide an exhaustive description of the abundance characteristics of the three analysed stars with a critical review of the line parameters used to derive the abundances. We compiled a table of atomic data for more than 1100 measured lines that may be used in the future as a reference. The abundances we obtained for He, C, Al, S, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Sr, Y, and Zr are compatible with the solar ones derived with recent 3D radiative-hydrodynamical simulations of the solar photosphere. The abundances of the remaining studied elements show some degree of discrepancy compared to the solar photosphere. Those of N, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, and Nd may well be ascribed to non-LTE effects; for P, Cl, Sc and Co, non-LTE effects are totally unknown; O, Ne, Ar, and Ba show discrepancies that cannot be ascribed to non-LTE effects. The discrepancies obtained for O (in two stars) and Ne agree with very recent non-LTE abundance analysis of early B-type stars in the solar neighbourhood.

Improved fundamental parameters and LTE abundances of the CoRoT solar-type pulsator HD49933

The knowledge of accurate stellar parameters is a key stone in several fields of stellar astrophysics, such as asteroseismology and stellar evolution. Although the parameters can be derived both via spectroscopy and multicolor photometry, the obtained results are sometimes affected by systematic uncertainties. In this paper we present a self-consistent spectral analysis of the solar-type star HD49933, which is a primary target for the CoRoT satellite. We used high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra to carry out a consistent parameter estimation and abundance analysis of HD49933. The LLmodels code was employed for model atmosphere calculations, while Synth3 and Width9 codes were used for line profile calculation and LTE abundance analysis. In this paper we provide a detailed description of the methodology adopted to derive the fundamental parameters and the abundances. Although the obtained parameters differ from the ones previously derived by other authors, we show that only the set obtained in this work is able to fit the observed spectrum accurately. In particular, the surface gravity was adjusted to fit pressure-sensitive spectral features. We confirm the importance of a consistent analysis of relevant spectroscopic features, application of advanced model atmospheres, and the use of up-to-date atomic line data for the determination of stellar parameters. These results are crucial for further studies, e.g. detailed theoretical modelling of the observed pulsation frequencies.

Model atmospheres of chemically peculiar stars: Self-consistent empirical stratified model of HD24712

High-resolution spectra of some chemically peculiar stars clearly demonstrate the presence of strong abundance gradients in their atmospheres. However, these inhomogeneities are usually ignored in the standard scheme of model atmosphere calculations, braking the consistency between model structure and spectroscopically derived abundance pattern. In this paper we present first empirical self-consistent stellar atmosphere model of roAp star HD24712, with stratification of chemical elements included, and which is derived directly from the observed profiles of spectral lines without time-consuming simulations of physical mechanisms responsible for these anomalies. We used the LLmodels stellar model atmosphere code and DDAFIT minimization tool for analysis of chemical elements stratification and construction of self-consistent atmospheric model. Empirical determination of Pr and Nd stratification in the atmosphere of HD24712 is based on NLTE line formation for Prii/iii and Ndii/iii with the use of the DETAIL code. Based on iterative procedure of stratification analysis and subsequent re-calculation of model atmosphere structure we constructed a self-consistent model of HD24712, i.e. the model which temperature-pressure structure is consistent with results of stratification analysis. It is shown that stratification of chemical elements leads to the considerable changes in model structure as to compare with non-stratified homogeneous case. We find that accumulation of REE elements allows for the inverse temperature gradient to be present in upper atmosphere of the star with the maximum temperature increase of about 600K.

A self-consistent empirical model atmosphere, abundance and stratification analysis of the benchmark roAp star alpha Circini

Chemically peculiar (CP) stars are unique natural laboratories for investigation of the microscopic diffusion processes of chemical elements. The element segregation under the influence of gravity and radiation pressure leads to the appearance of strong abundance gradients in the atmospheres of CP stars. Consequently, the atmospheric temperature-pressure structure of these objects could deviate significantly from the atmospheres of normal stars with homogeneous abundances. In this study we performed a self-consistent, empirical model atmosphere study of the brightest rapidly oscillating Ap star alpha Cir. We account for chemical stratification in the model atmosphere calculations and assess the importance of non-uniformed vertical element distribution on the model structure, energy distribution and hydrogen line profiles. Based on an iterative procedure of the chemical abundance analysis of 52 ions of 35 elements, stratification modeling of 4 elements (Si, Ca, Cr and Fe) and subsequent re-calculations of the atmospheric structure, we derived a new model atmosphere of alpha Cir, which is consistent with the inferred atmospheric chemistry of the star. We find Teff=7500 K, logg=4.1, and demonstrate that chemical stratification has a noticeable impact on the model structure and modifies the formation of the hydrogen Balmer lines. Our spectroscopically determined Teff of alpha Cir agrees with the fundamental effective temperature of this star. This shows that temperatures inferred in detailed spectroscopic analyses of cool magnetic CP stars are not affected by a large systematic bias.

Discovery of very low amplitude 9-minute multiperiodic pulsations in the magnetic Ap star HD 75445

We present our discovery of pulsational radial-velocity variations in the cool Ap star HD 75445, an object spectroscopically similar to the bright, rapidly-oscillating Ap (roAp) star gamma Equ. Based on high-resolution time-series spectroscopy obtained with the HARPS spectrometer at the European Southern Observatory 3.6-m telescope, we detected oscillations in Nd II and Nd III lines with a period close to 9 min and amplitudes of 20-30 m/s. Substantial variation in the pulsational amplitude during our 3.8 h observing run reveals the presence of at least three excited non-radial modes. The detection of extremely low amplitude pulsations in HD 75445 indicates that the roAp excitation mechanism produces variability in the radial velocity amplitude of between a few tens m/s and several km/s. This supports the idea that many, if not all, cool Ap stars occupying the roAp instability strip may harbour non-radial pulsations, which currently remain undetected due to their small photometric and radial-velocity amplitudes.
