Quantum transport and spin dynamics on shearless tori

We investigate for quantum dynamics in phase-space regions containing ``shearless tori''. We show that the properties of these peculiar classical phase-space structures -- important to the dynamics of tokamaks -- may be exploited for quantum information applications. In particular we show that shearless tori permit the non-dispersive transmission of localized wavepackets. The quantum many-body Hamiltonian of a Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain, subjected to an oscillating magnetic field, can be reduced to a classical one-body ``image'' dynamical system which is the well-studied Harper map. The Harper map belongs to a class of Hamiltonian systems (non-twist maps) which contain shearless tori. We show that a variant with sinusoidal time driving ``driven Harper model'' produces shearless tori which are especially suitable for quantum state transfer. The behavior of the concurrence is investigated as an example.

Dynamical instability in kicked Bose-Einstein condensates: Bogoliubov resonances

Bose-Einstein condensates subject to short pulses (`kicks') from standing waves of light represent a nonlinear analogue of the well-known chaos paradigm, the quantum kicked rotor. Previous studies of the onset of dynamical instability (ie exponential proliferation of non-condensate particles) suggested that the transition to instability might be associated with a transition to chaos. Here we conclude instead that instability is due to resonant driving of Bogoliubov modes. We investigate the excitation of Bogoliubov modes for both the quantum kicked rotor (QKR) and a variant, the double kicked rotor (QKR-2). We present an analytical model, valid in the limit of weak impulses which correctly gives the scaling properties of the resonances and yields good agreement with mean-field numerics.

Fractional $\hbar$-scaling for quantum kicked rotors without cantori

Previous studies of quantum delta-kicked rotors have found momentum probability distributions with a typical width (localization length $L$) characterized by fractional $\hbar$-scaling, ie $L \sim \hbar^{2/3}$ in regimes and phase-space regions close to `golden-ratio' cantori. In contrast, in typical chaotic regimes, the scaling is integer, $L \sim \hbar^{-1}$. Here we consider a generic variant of the kicked rotor, the random-pair-kicked particle (RP-KP), obtained by randomizing the phases every second kick; it has no KAM mixed phase-space structures, like golden-ratio cantori, at all. Our unexpected finding is that, over comparable phase-space regions, it also has fractional scaling, but $L \sim \hbar^{-2/3}$. A semiclassical analysis indicates that the $\hbar^{2/3}$ scaling here is of quantum origin and is not a signature of classical cantori.

Quantum chaos with spin-chains in pulsed magnetic fields

Recently it was found that the dynamics in a Heisenberg spin-chain subjected to a sequence of periodic pulses from an external, parabolic, magnetic field can have a close correspondence with the quantum kicked rotor (QKR). The QKR is a key paradigm of quantum chaos; it has as its classical limit the well-known Standard Map. It was found that a single spin excitation could be converted into a pair of non-dispersive, counter-propagating spin coherent states equivalent to the accelerator modes of the Standard Map. Here we consider how other types of quantum chaotic systems such as a double-kicked quantum rotor or a quantum rotor with a double-well potential might be realized with spin chains; we discuss the possibilities regarding manipulation of the one-magnon spin waves.

Directed motion for delta-kicked atoms with broken symmetries: comparison between theory and experiment

We report an experimental investigation of momentum diffusion in the delta-function kicked rotor where time symmetry is broken by a two-period kicking cycle and spatial symmetry by an alternating linear potential. We exploit this, and a technique involving a moving optical potential, to create an asymmetry in the momentum diffusion that is due to the classical chaotic diffusion. This represents a realization of a type of Hamiltonian quantum ratchet.

Tuning the Mott transition in a Bose-Einstein condensate by multi-photon absorption

We study the time-dependent dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical lattice. Modeling the system as a Bose-Hubbard model, we show how applying a periodic driving field can induce coherent destruction of tunneling. In the low-frequency regime, we obtain the novel result that the destruction of tunneling displays extremely sharp peaks when the driving frequency is resonant with the depth of the trapping potential (``multi-photon resonances''), which allows the quantum phase transition between the Mott insulator and the superfluid state to be controlled with high precision. We further show how the waveform of the field can be chosen to maximize this effect.

Classical diffusion in double-delta-kicked particles

We investigate the classical chaotic diffusion of atoms subjected to {\em pairs} of closely spaced pulses (`kicks) from standing waves of light (the $2δ$-KP). Recent experimental studies with cold atoms implied an underlying classical diffusion of type very different from the well-known paradigm of Hamiltonian chaos, the Standard Map. The kicks in each pair are separated by a small time interval $ε\ll 1$, which together with the kick strength $K$, characterizes the transport. Phase space for the $2δ$-KP is partitioned into momentum `cells' partially separated by momentum-trapping regions where diffusion is slow. We present here an analytical derivation of the classical diffusion for a $2δ$-KP including all important correlations which were used to analyze the experimental data. We find a new asymptotic ($t \to \infty$) regime of `hindered' diffusion: while for the Standard Map the diffusion rate, for $K \gg 1$, $D \sim K^2/2[1- J_2(K)..]$ oscillates about the uncorrelated, rate $D_0 =K^2/2$, we find analytically, that the $2δ$-KP can equal, but never diffuses faster than, a random walk rate. We argue this is due to the destruction of the important classical `accelerator modes' of the Standard Map. We analyze the experimental regime $0.1\lesssim Kε\lesssim 1$, where quantum localisation lengths $L \sim \hbar^{-0.75}$ are affected by fractal cell boundaries. We find an approximate asymptotic diffusion rate $D\propto K^3ε$, in correspondence to a $D\propto K^3$ regime in the Standard Map associated with 'golden-ratio' cantori.

Entanglement and dynamics of spin-chains in periodically-pulsed magnetic fields: accelerator modes

We study the dynamics of a single excitation in a Heisenberg spin-chain subjected to a sequence of periodic pulses from an external, parabolic, magnetic field. We show that, for experimentally reasonable parameters, a pair of counter-propagating coherent states are ejected from the centre of the chain. We find an illuminating correspondence with the quantum time evolution of the well-known paradigm of quantum chaos, the Quantum Kicked Rotor (QKR). From this we can analyse the entanglement production and interpret the ejected coherent states as a manifestation of so-called `accelerator modes' of a classically chaotic system.

$2δ$-Kicked Quantum Rotors: Localization and `Critical' Statistics

The quantum dynamics of atoms subjected to pairs of closely-spaced $δ$-kicks from optical potentials are shown to be quite different from the well-known paradigm of quantum chaos, the singly-$δ$-kicked system. We find the unitary matrix has a new oscillating band structure corresponding to a cellular structure of phase-space and observe a spectral signature of a localization-delocalization transition from one cell to several. We find that the eigenstates have localization lengths which scale with a fractional power $L \sim \hbar^{-.75}$ and obtain a regime of near-linear spectral variances which approximate the `critical statistics' relation $Σ_2(L) \simeq χL \approx {1/2}(1-ν) L$, where $ν\approx 0.75$ is related to the fractal classical phase-space structure. The origin of the $ν\approx 0.75$ exponent is analyzed.

Theory of 2$δ$-kicked Quantum Rotors

We examine the quantum dynamics of cold atoms subjected to {\em pairs} of closely spaced $δ$-kicks from standing waves of light, and find behaviour quite unlike the well-studied quantum kicked rotor (QKR). Recent experiments [Jones et al, {\em Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 223002 (2004)}] identified a regime of chaotic, anomalous classical diffusion. We show that the corresponding quantum phase-space has a cellular structure, arising from a unitary matrix with oscillating band-width. The corresponding eigenstates are exponentially localized, but scale with a fractional power, $L \sim \hbar^{-0.75}$, in contrast to the QKR for which $L \sim \hbar^{-1}$. The effect of inter-cell (and intra-cell) transport is investigated by studying the spectral fluctuations with both periodic as well as `open' boundary conditions.

Asymmetric diffusion in the delta-kicked rotor with broken symmetries

We report an experimental investigation of momentum diffusion in the delta-function kicked rotor where time symmetry is broken by a two-period kicking cycle and spatial symmetry by an alternating linear potential. The momentum diffusion constant is thus modified by kick-to-kick correlations which show a momentum dependence. We exploit this, and a technique involving a moving optical potential, to create an asymmetry in the momentum diffusion that is due entirely to the chaotic dynamics.

Chaotic quantum ratchets and filters with cold atoms in optical lattices: properties of Floquet states

Recently, cesium atoms in optical lattices subjected to cycles of unequally-spaced pulses have been found to show interesting behavior: they represent the first experimental demonstration of a Hamiltonian ratchet mechanism, and they show strong variability of the Dynamical Localization lengths as a function of initial momentum. The behavior differs qualitatively from corresponding atomic systems pulsed with equal periods, which are a textbook implementation of a well-studied quantum chaos paradigm, the quantum delta-kicked particle (delta-QKP). We investigate here the properties of the corresponding eigenstates (Floquet states) in the parameter regime of the new experiments and compare them with those of the eigenstates of the delta-QKP at similar kicking strengths. We show that, with the properties of the Floquet states, we can shed light on the form of the observed ratchet current as well as variations in the Dynamical Localization length.

Atoms in double-delta-kicked periodic potentials: chaos with long-range correlations

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the dynamics of cold atoms subjected to closely-spaced pairs of pulses in an optical lattice. The experiments show the interplay between fully coherent quantum dynamics and a novel momentum-diffusion regime: for all previously-studied delta-kicked systems, chaotic classical dynamics shows diffusion with short-time (2 or 3-kick) correlations; here, chaotic diffusion combines with new types of long-ranged 'global' correlations, between all kick-pairs, which control transport through trapping regions in phase-space. Analytical formulae are presented and, with quantum localization, are used to analyse the experiments.

Chaotic filtering of moving atoms in pulsed optical lattices

We propose a mechanism for a velocity-selective device, which exploits the fundamental phenomenon of dynamical localization. It would allow packets of cold atoms travelling through a pulsed optical lattice in one direction to pass undisturbed, while dispersing atoms travelling in the opposite direction. This mechanism is based on a chaotic diffusion process, with a momentum-dependent diffusion coefficient. We analyse this classical effect, and we show that it is enhanced by dynamical localization.

A chaotic 'turnstile' for atoms in periodic potentials

Using a new type of chaotic ratchet generated by pulsed standing waves of light, we propose a mechanism which would allow packets of atoms travelling through a pulsed optical lattice in one direction to pass almost undisturbed, while strongly heating atoms drifting through in the opposite direction. An analytical formula for the diffusive energy growth is derived and shown to give good agreement with numerical calculations.

Contribution of forbidden orbits in the photoabsorption spectra of atoms and molecules in a magnetic field

In a previous work [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{66}, 0134XX (2002)] we noted a partial disagreement between quantum R-matrix and semiclassical calculations of photoabsorption spectra of molecules in a magnetic field. We show this disagreement is due to a non-vanishing contribution of processes which are forbidden according to the usual semiclassical formalism. Formulas to include these processes are obtained by using a refined stationary phase approximation. The resulting higher order in $\hbar$ contributions also account for previously unexplained ``recurrences without closed-orbits''. Quantum and semiclassical photoabsorption spectra for Rydberg atoms and molecules in a magnetic field are calculated and compared to assess the validity of the first-order forbidden orbit contributions.

Cold atoms in optical lattices :a Hamiltonian ratchet

We investigate a new type of quantum ratchet which may be realised by cold atoms in a double-well optical lattice which is pulsed with unequal periods. The classical dynamics is chaotic and we find the classical diffusion rate $D$ is asymmetric in momentum up to a finite time $t_r$. The quantum behaviour produces a corresponding asymmetry in the momentum distribution which is 'frozen-in' by Dynamical Localisation provided the break-time $t^* > t_r$. We conclude that the cold atom ratchets require $Db/ \hbar \sim 1$ where b is a small deviation from period-one pulses.

Molecules in external fields: a semiclassical analysis

We undertake a semiclassical analysis of the spectral properties (modulations of photoabsorption spectra, energy level statistics) of a simple Rydberg molecule in static fields within the framework of Closed-Orbit/Periodic-Orbit theories. We conclude that in addition to the usual classically allowed orbits one must consider classically forbidden diffractive paths. Further, the molecule brings in a new type of 'inelastic' diffractive trajectory, different from the usual 'elastic' diffractive orbits encountered in previous studies of atomic and analogous systems such as billiards with point-scatterers. The relative importance of inelastic versus elastic diffraction is quantified by merging the usual Closed Orbit theory framework with molecular quantum defect theory.
