Momentum Maps and Stochastic Clebsch Action Principles

We derive stochastic differential equations whose solutions follow the flow of a stochastic nonlinear Lie algebra operation on a configuration manifold. For this purpose, we develop a stochastic Clebsch action principle, in which the noise couples to the phase space variables through a momentum map. This special coupling simplifies the structure of the resulting stochastic Hamilton equations for the momentum map. In particular, these stochastic Hamilton equations collectivize for Hamiltonians that depend only on the momentum map variable. The Stratonovich equations are derived from the Clebsch variational principle and then converted into Itô form. In comparing the Stratonovich and Itô forms of the stochastic dynamical equations governing the components of the momentum map, we find that the Itô contraction term turns out to be a double Poisson bracket. Finally, we present the stochastic Hamiltonian formulation of the collectivized momentum map dynamics and derive the corresponding Kolmogorov forward and backward equations.

Quantum Anomalies and Logarithmic Derivatives

This papers deals with connections between quantum anomalies and transformations of Feynman pseudo-measures. Mathematical objects related to the notion of the volume element in an infinite-dimensional space considered in the physics literature are considered and disagreement in the related literature regarding the origin of quantum anomalies is explained.

Wigner Measures and Quantum Control

We study several examples from quantum control theory in the framework of Wigner functions and measures for infinite dimensional open quantum systems. An axiomatic definition of coherent quantum feedback is proposed within this setting.

The momentum map representation of images

This paper discusses the mathematical framework for designing methods of large deformation matching (LDM) for image registration in computational anatomy. After reviewing the geometrical framework of LDM image registration methods, a theorem is proved showing that these methods may be designed by using the actions of diffeomorphisms on the image data structure to define their associated momentum representations as (cotangent lift) momentum maps. To illustrate its use, the momentum map theorem is shown to recover the known algorithms for matching landmarks, scalar images and vector fields. After briefly discussing the use of this approach for Diffusion Tensor (DT) images, we explain how to use momentum maps in the design of registration algorithms for more general data structures. For example, we extend our methods to determine the corresponding momentum map for registration using semidirect product groups, for the purpose of matching images at two different length scales. Finally, we discuss the use of momentum maps in the design of image registration algorithms when the image data is defined on manifolds instead of vector spaces.

Geometric dynamics of optimization

This paper investigates a family of dynamical systems arising from an evolutionary re-interpretation of certain optimal control and optimization problems. We focus particularly on the application in image registration of the theory of \emph{metamorphosis}. Metamorphosis is a means of tracking the optimal changes of shape that are necessary for registration of images with various types of data structures, without requiring that the transformations of shape be diffeomorphisms. This is a rich field whose possibilities are just beginning to be developed. In particular, metamorphosis and its related variants in the geometric approach to control and optimization can be expected to produce many exciting opportunities for new applications and analysis in geometric dynamics.

Invariant higher-order variational problems

We investigate higher-order geometric $k$-splines for template matching on Lie groups. This is motivated by the need to apply diffeomorphic template matching to a series of images, e.g., in longitudinal studies of Computational Anatomy. Our approach formulates Euler-Poincaré theory in higher-order tangent spaces on Lie groups. In particular, we develop the Euler-Poincaré formalism for higher-order variational problems that are invariant under Lie group transformations. The theory is then applied to higher-order template matching and the corresponding curves on the Lie group of transformations are shown to satisfy higher-order Euler-Poincaré equations. The example of SO(3) for template matching on the sphere is presented explicitly. Various cotangent bundle momentum maps emerge naturally that help organize the formulas. We also present Hamiltonian and Hamilton-Ostrogradsky Lie-Poisson formulations of the higher-order Euler-Poincaré theory for applications on the Hamiltonian side.

Variational principles for spin systems and the Kirchhoff rod

We obtain the affine Euler-Poincaré equations by standard Lagrangian reduction and deduce the associated Clebsch-constrained variational principle. These results are illustrated in deriving the equations of motion for continuum spin systems and Kirchhoff's rod, where they provide a unified geometric interpretation.

Cosphere bundle reduction in contact geometry

We extend the theorems concerning the equivariant symplectic reduction of the cotangent bundle to contact geometry. The role of the cotangent bundle is taken by the cosphere bundle. We use Albert's method for reduction at zero and Willett's method for non-zero reduction. We provide examples for both cases.

The geometry and analysis of the averaged Euler equations and a new diffeomorphism group

We present a geometric analysis of the incompressible averaged Euler equations for an ideal inviscid fluid. We show that solutions of these equations are geodesics on the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group of a new weak right invariant pseudo metric. We prove that for precompact open subsets of ${\mathbb R}^n$, this system of PDEs with Dirichlet boundary conditions are well-posed for initial data in the Hilbert space $H^s$, $s>n/2+1$. We then use a nonlinear Trotter product formula to prove that solutions of the averaged Euler equations are a regular limit of solutions to the averaged Navier-Stokes equations in the limit of zero viscosity. This system of PDEs is also the model for second-grade non-Newtonian fluids.

Lagrangian Reduction, the Euler--Poincaré Equations, and Semidirect Products

There is a well developed and useful theory of Hamiltonian reduction for semidirect products, which applies to examples such as the heavy top, compressible fluids and MHD, which are governed by Lie-Poisson type equations. In this paper we study the Lagrangian analogue of this process and link it with the general theory of Lagrangian reduction; that is the reduction of variational principles. These reduced variational principles are interesting in their own right since they involve constraints on the allowed variations, analogous to what one finds in the theory of nonholonomic systems with the Lagrange d'Alembert principle. In addition, the abstract theorems about circulation, what we call the Kelvin-Noether theorem, are given.

The Euler-Poincare Equations and Semidirect Products with Applications to Continuum Theories

We study Euler-Poincare systems (i.e., the Lagrangian analogue of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian systems) defined on semidirect product Lie algebras. We first give a derivation of the Euler-Poincare equations for a parameter dependent Lagrangian by using a variational principle of Lagrange d'Alembert type. Then we derive an abstract Kelvin-Noether theorem for these equations. We also explore their relation with the theory of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian systems defined on the dual of a semidirect product Lie algebra. The Legendre transformation in such cases is often not invertible; so it does not produce a corresponding Euler-Poincare system on that Lie algebra. We avoid this potential difficulty by developing the theory of Euler-Poincare systems entirely within the Lagrangian framework. We apply the general theory to a number of known examples, including the heavy top, ideal compressible fluids and MHD. We also use this framework to derive higher dimensional Camassa-Holm equations, which have many potentially interesting analytical properties. These equations are Euler-Poincare equations for geodesics on diffeomorphism groups (in the sense of the Arnold program) but where the metric is H^1 rather than L^2.
