Inequivalent routes across the Mott transition in V2O3 explored by X-ray absorption

The changes in the electronic structure of V2O3 across the metal-insulator transition induced by temperature, doping and pressure are identified using high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V pre K-edge. Contrary to what has been taken for granted so far, the metallic phase reached under pressure is shown to differ from the one obtained by changing doping or temperature. Using a novel computational scheme, we relate this effect to the role and occupancy of the a1g orbitals. This finding unveils the inequivalence of different routes across the Mott transition in V2O3

Evidence of Kinetic Energy Driven Antiferromagnetism in Double Perovskites : A First-principles Study

Using first principles density functional calculations, together with exact diagonalization of Fe-Mo Hamiltonian constructed in a first principles Wannier function basis, we studied the electronic structure of La doped double perovskite compound Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$. Our calculation show stabilization of kinetic energy driven antiferromagnetic phase for La rich compounds, in agreement with the results obtained on the basis of previous model calculations.

Electronic structure of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet VOCl: a multi-orbital Mott insulator

We have studied the electronic structure of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet VOCl using photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory including local Coulomb repulsion. From calculated exchange integrals and the observed energy dispersions we argue that the degree of one-dimensionality regarding both the magnetic and electronic properties is noticeably reduced compared to the isostructural compounds TiOCl and TiOBr. Also, our analysis provides conclusive justification to classify VOCl as a multi-orbital Mott insulator. In contrast to the titanium based compounds density functional theory here gives a better description of the electronic structure. However, a quantitative account of the low-energy features and detailed line shapes calls for further investigations including dynamical and spatial correlations.

Momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function for TiOCl from a combination of density functional and variational cluster calculations

We present results for the momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function of the low-dimensional system TiOCl in the insulating state, obtained by a combination of ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Variational Cluster (VCA) calculations. This approach allows to combine a realistic band structure and a thorough treatment of the strong correlations. We show that it is important to include a realistic two-dimensional band structure of TiOCl into the effective strongly-correlated models in order to explain the spectral weight behavior seen in angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments. In particular, we observe that the effect of the interchain couplings is a considerable redistribution of the spectral weight around the Gamma point from higher to lower binding energies as compared to a purely one-dimensional model treatment. Hence, our results support a description of TiOCl as a two-dimensional compound with strong anisotropy and also set a benchmark on the spectral features of correlated coupled-chain systems.

Electronic structure of V2O3: Wannier orbitals from LDA-$N$MTO calculations

Using muffin-tin orbital (MTO) based NMTO-downfolding procedure within the framework of local density approximation, we construct the Wannier orbitals for the $t_{2g}$ manifold of bands in V2O3 in the paramagnetic phase. The real space representation of the one-electron Hamiltonian in the constructed Wannier function basis shows that, contrary to the popular belief, the in-plane hopping interactions are as important as the vertical pair hopping. Following the language of Di Matteo {\it et.al.} [Phys. Rev. B 65, 054413 (2002)], this implies, the problem of V2O3 falls in the atomic regime rather than in the molecular regime. We have also repeated our construction procedure in the low temperature monoclinic phase, for which the changes in hopping interactions are found not to be dramatic.

Proposed Orbital Ordering in MnV2O4 from First-principles Calculations

Based on density functional calculations, we propose a possible orbital ordering in MnV2O4 which consists of orbital chains running along crystallographic a and b directions with orbitals rotated alternatively by about 45 degrees within each chain. We show that the consideration of correlation effects as implemented in the local spin density approximation (LSDA)+U approach is crucial for a correct description of the space group symmetry. This implies that the correlation-driven orbital ordering has a strong influence on the structural transitions in this system. Inclusion of spin-orbit effects does not seem to influence the orbital ordering pattern. We further find that the proposed orbital arrangement favours a noncollinear magnetic ordering of V spins, as observed experimentally. Exchange couplings among V spins are also calculated and discussed.

New structural and magnetic aspects of the nanotube system Na2V3O7

We present new experimental results of low temperature x-ray synchrotron diffraction, neutron scattering and very low temperature (mK-range) bulk measurements on the nanotube system ${\tube}$. The crystal structure determined from our data is similar to the previously proposed model (P. Millet {\it et al.} J. Solid State Chem. $\bf{147}$, 676 (1999)), but also deviates from it in significant details. The structure comprises nanotubes along the c-axis formed by stacking units of two V-rings buckled in the $ab$-plane. The space group is P$\bar{3}$ and the composition is nonstoichiometric, Na(2-x)V3O7, x=0.17. The thermal evolution of the lattice parameters reveals anisotropic lattice compression on cooling. Neutron scattering experiments monitor a very weak magnetic signal at energies from -20 to 9 meV. New magnetic susceptibility, specific heat measurements and decay of remanent magnetization in the 30 mK - 300 mK range reveal that the previously observed transition at ~76 mK is spin-glass like with no long-range order. Presented experimental observations do not support models of isolated clusters, but are compatible with a model of odd-legged S=1/2 spin tubes possibly segmented into fragments with different lengths.

Combined density-functional and dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo calculations for three-band Hubbard models for hole-doped cuprate superconductors

Using a combined local density functional theory (LDA-DFT) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) dynamic cluster approximation approach, the parameter dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of several single-layer hole-doped cuprate superconductors with experimentally very different Tcmax is investigated. The parameters of two different three-band Hubbard models are obtained using the LDA and the downfolding Nth-order muffin-tin orbital technique with N=0 and 1 respectively. QMC calculations on 4-site clusters show that the d-wave transition temperature Tc depends sensitively on the parameters. While the N=1 MTO basis set which reproduces all three $pdσ$ bands leads to a d-wave transition, the N=0 set which merely reproduces the LDA Fermi surface and velocities does not.

Electronic Structure, Phonons and Dielectric Anomaly in Ferromagnetic Insulating Double Perovskite La2NiMnO6

Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic insulating double-perovskite compound La2NiMnO6, which has been reported to exhibit interesting magnetic field sensitive dielectric anomaly as a function of temperature. Our study reveals existence of very soft infra-red active phonons that couple strongly with spins at the Ni and Mn sites through modification of the super-exchange interaction. We suggest that these modes are the origin for observed dielectric anomaly in La2NiMnO6.

Proposed low energy model Hamiltonian for spin-gapped system CuTe2O5

Using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on the Nth order muffin tin orbital (NMTO)-downfolding technique, we derived the low-energy spin model for CuTe2O5. Our study reveals that this compound is a 2D coupled spin-dimer system with the strongest Cu-Cu interaction mediated by two O-Te-O bridges. We checked the goodness of our model by computing the magnetic susceptibility with the Quantum Monte Carlo technique and by comparing it with available experimental data. We also present magnetization and specific heat results which may be compared with future experimental investigations. Our derived model is in disagreement with a recently proposed model for this compound [J. Deisenhofer et al, Phys. Rev. B,74 (2006) 174421]. The situation needs to be settled in terms of further experimental investigations.

Effects of chemical pressure on the Fermi surface and band dispersion in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and first-principles electronic structure calculations on the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors Ln1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (Ln = Nd, Sm, and Eu). The observed Fermi surface and band dispersion show such changes that with decreasing ionic size of Ln3+, the curvature of the Fermi surface or -t'/t decreases, where t and t' are transfer integrals between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearestneighbor Cu sites, respectively. The increase of t with chemical pressure is found to be significant, which may explain the apparently inconsistent behavior seen in the hole-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 under epitaxial strain [M. Abrecht et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 057002 (2003)]. A gap due to the antiferromagnetism opens even in the nodal region for the Sm and Eu compounds, and the gap size increases in going from Ln = Sm to Eu.

Effects of Two Energy Scales in Weakly Dimerized Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

By means of thermal expansion and specific heat measurements on the high-pressure phase of (VO)$_2$P$_2$O$_7$, the effects of two energy scales of the weakly dimerized antiferromagnetic $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg chain are explored. The low energy scale, given by the spin gap $Δ$, is found to manifest itself in a pronounced thermal expansion anomaly. A quantitative analysis, employing T-DMRG calculations, shows that this feature originates from changes in the magnetic entropy with respect to $Δ$, $\partial S^{m}/ \partial Δ$. This term, inaccessible by specific heat, is visible only in the weak-dimerization limit where it reflects peculiarities of the excitation spectrum and its sensitivity to variations in $Δ$.

Cluster Dynamical Mean-field calculations for TiOCl

Based on a combination of cluster dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and density functional calculations, we calculated the angle-integrated spectral density in the layered $s=1/2$ quantum magnet TiOCl. The agreement with recent photoemission and oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments is found to be good. Th e improvement achieved with this calculation with respect to previous single-site DMFT calculations is an indication of the correlated nature and low-dimensionality of TiOCl.

Structure, bonding and magnetism in cobalt clusters

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Co$_n$ clusters ($n=2-$20) have been investigated using density functional theory within the pseudopotential plane wave method. An unusual hexagonal growth pattern has been observed in the intermediate size range, $n=15-$20. The cobalt atoms are ferromagnetically ordered and the calculated magnetic moments are found to be higher than that of corresponding hcp bulk value, which are in good agreement with the recent Stern-Gerlach experiments. The average coordination number is found to dominate over the average bond length to determine the effective hybridization and consequently the cluster magnetic moment.

Enhanced Crystal Field Splitting and Orbital Selective Coherence by Strong Correlations in V_2O_3

We present a study of the paramagnetic metallic and insulating phases of vanadium sesquioxide by means of the $N$th order muffin-tin orbital implementation of density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. The transition is shown to be driven by a correlation-induced enhancement of the crystal field splitting within the $t_{2g}$ manifold, which results in a suppression of the hybridization between the $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^π$ bands. We discuss the changes in the effective quasi-particle band structure caused by the correlations and the corresponding self-energies. At temperatures of about 400 K we find the $a_{1g}$ orbitals to display coherent quasi-particle behavior, while a large imaginary part of the self-energy and broad features in the spectral function indicate that the $e_g^π$ orbitals are still far above their coherence temperature. The local spectral functions are in excellent agreement with recent bulk sensitive photoemission data. Finally, we also make a prediction for angle-resolved photoemission experiments by calculating momentum-resolved spectral functions.

Theoretical study of doped-Tl$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Tl$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under pressure

Using first-principles density functional based calculations, we study the effect of doping and pressure in manganese based pyrochlore compound,Tl$_{2}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ that exhibits colossal magneto-resistive behavior. The theoretical study is motivated by the counter-intuitive experimental observation of suppression of ferromagnetic transition temperature upon application of pressure and its enhancement upon substitution of Mn by moderate amount of nonmagnetic Sb ion. We also attempt to resolve the issue related to crystal structure changes that may occur upon application of pressure.

Comparative investigation of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br and Cu4Te5O12Cl4

We present a comparative study of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br (Cu-2252(X)) and the newly synthesized Cu4Te5O12Cl4 (Cu-45124(Cl)) based on ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations. The magnetic behavior of Cu-45124(Cl) with a phase transition to an ordered state at a lower critical temperature T$_c$=13.6K than in Cu-2252(Cl) (T$_c$=18K) can be well understood in terms of the modified interaction paths. We identify the relevant structural changes between the two systems and discuss the hypothetical behavior of the not yet synthesized Cu-45124(Br) with an ab initio relaxed structure using Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics.

Microscopic model for the novel frustrated Cu(II)-spin tetrahedron-based Cu4Te5O12X4 (X=Cl, Br) systems

We present a microscopic study of the electronic and magnetic properties of the newly synthesized Cu(II)-spin tetrahedron-based Cu4Te5O12Cl4 compound based on Density Functional calculations and on ab initio-derived effective models. In view of these results, we discuss the origin of the observed differences in behavior between this system and the structurally similar and much studied Cu2Te2O5Cl2. Since the Br analog of the title compound has not been synthesized yet, we derive the crystal structure of Cu4Te5O12Br4 by geometry optimization in an ab initio molecular dynamics calculation and investigate the effect of substituting Cl by Br as well as the possible magnetic behavior of this system and compare with the recently studied sister compound, Cu2Te2O5Br2.
