The sPHENIX Micromegas Outer Tracker

The sPHENIX Time Projection Chamber Outer Tracker (TPOT) is a Micromegas based detector. It is a part of the sPHENIX experiment that aims to facilitate the calibration of the Time Projection Chamber, in particular the correction of the time-averaged and beam-induced distortions of the electron drift. This paper describes the detector mission, setup, construction, installation, commissioning and performance during the first year of sPHENIX data taking.

Design, Construction, Operation and Performance of a Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment

A Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) has been developed, constructed and successfully operated within the PHENIX detector at RHIC. The HBD is a Cherenkov detector operated with pure CF4. It has a 50 cm long radiator directly coupled in a window- less configuration to a readout element consisting of a triple GEM stack, with a CsI photocathode evaporated on the top surface of the top GEM and pad readout at the bottom of the stack. This paper gives a comprehensive account of the construction, operation and in-beam performance of the detector.

Uniform mixing of antiferromagnetism and high-T_c superconductivity in multilayered copper oxides Ba_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_{2n}F_2 with apical fluorines (n=2,3,4): Cu-NMR/NQR and F-NMR

We report Cu-NMR/NQR and F-NMR studies on the multilayered high-T_c copper oxides Ba_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_{2n}F_2 with n=2,3,4, where n is the number of CuO_2 planes. It is revealed that bi-layered Ba_2CaCu_2O_4F_2 is an underdoped superconductor with hole carriers, which are introduced into CuO_2 planes by an unexpected deviation from the nominal content of apical fluorines. In a previous paper, we proposed a self-doping mechanism as the origin of carrier doping in n=3 and n=4; in the mechanism, electrons are transferred from the inner CuO_2 plane (IP) to the outer one (OP). However, since it has been found that the bi-layered compound is hole doped, we have reexamined the superconducting and magnetic properties in n=3 and n=4 by Cu-NMR/NQR and F-NMR. The extensive NMR studies have confirmed that the apical-fluorine compounds are not self-doped but hole-doped, and that antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) coexist in a single CuO_2 plane. In n=4, the AFM ordering occurs at T_N = 80 K, well above T_c=55 K, where the respective AFM moments are M_AFM=0.11 mu_B and 0.18 mu_B at the OP and the IP. In n=3, on the other hand, the underdoped single IP exhibits a spontaneous moment M_AFM=0.12 mu_B at low temperatures and a peak in the nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 of F at T_N=23 K, much lower than T_c = 76 K. We note that the increase in the number of IPs from one to two leads to an increase in T_N due to strengthening the interlayer coupling, although the doping levels for both compounds are almost comparable. The present results strongly suggest that the uniform mixing of AFM and SC is a general property inherent to a single CuO_2 plane in the underdoped regime for hole-doping.

Development of a Time Projection Chamber Using Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM-TPC)

We developed a prototype time projection chamber using gas electron multipliers (GEM-TPC) for high energy heavy ion collision experiments. To investigate its performance, we conducted a beam test with 3 kinds of gases (Ar(90%)-CH4(10%), Ar(70%)-C2H6(30%) and CF4). Detection efficiency of 99%, and spatial resolution of 79 $μ$m in the pad-row direction and 313 $μ$m in the drift direction were achieved. The test results show that the GEM-TPC meets the requirements for high energy heavy ion collision experiments. The configuration and performance of the GEM-TPC are described.

Auxiliary Field Meson Model at Finite Temperature and Density

Starting from many quark interactions, we construct a nonlinear sigma-omega model at finite temperature and density. The mesons are introduced as auxiliary fields. Effective quark-meson couplings are strongly related to effective meson masses, since they are derived simultaneously from the original many quark interactions. In this model, even if the effective omega-meson mass decreases due to the partial chiral restoration, the equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter can become soft.

Direct Photon Measurement at RHIC-PHENIX

Results on direct photon measurements from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC are presented. The direct photon yields for $p_T>$6 GeV/$c$ as a function of centrality in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV are found to be consistent with NLO pQCD calculation scaled by the number of binary collisions. The results suggest that the photons observed are emitted from the initial stage of hard scattering. Comparisons with several theoretical calculations are also presented.

A Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment at RHIC

A Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) is being developed for the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. It consists of a Cherenkov radiator operated with pure CF4 directly coupled in a windowless configuration to a triple-GEM detector element with a CsI photocathode and pad readout. The HBD operates in the bandwidth 6-11.5 eV(110-200 nm). We studied the detector response to minimum ionizing particles and to electrons. We present measurements of the CsI quantum efficiency, which are in very good agreement with previously published results over the bandwidth 6-8.3 eV and extend them up to 10.3 eV. Discharge probability andaging studies of the GEMs and the CsI photocathode in pure CF4 are presented.

An asymptotic formula for models with caustics

We introduce an asymptotic formula for calculating quantum mechanical and quantum theoretical models with caustics, like the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model. This asymptotic formula is given by the form attached the extra term, which suppresses the divergence induced because of caustics, to the leading term of the WKB approximation. This formula guarantees validity of the mean field approximation of models with caustics.

High p_T identified hadron ratios in sqrt(s_NN)=200GeV Au+Au Collisions

The PHENIX detector at RHIC measured high p_T identified hadron ratios in sqrt(s_NN) = 200GeV Au+Au collisions. Within the current systematic and statistical errors, pbar/p ratios that are measured up to 3.8GeV/c are almost independent of both p_T and centrality. The baryon to meson ratio is measured through p/pi and pbar/pi ratios up to 3.8GeV/c, showing they are strongly centrality dependent.
