Magentic-Field Induced Quantum Phase Transition and Critical Behavior in a Gapped Spin System TlCuCl$_3$

Magnetization measurements were performed on TlCuCl$_3$ with gapped ground state. The critical density and the magnetic phase diagram were obtained. The interacting constant was obtained as $U/k_{\rm B} = 313$ K. The experimental phase boundary for $T < 5$ K agrees perfectly with the magnon BEC theory based on the Hartree-Fock approximation with realistic dispersion relations and $U/k_{\rm B} = 320 $ K. The exponent $ϕ$ obtained with all the data points for $T < 5$ K is $ϕ= 1.99$, which is somewhat larger than theoretical exponent $ϕ_{\rm BEC} =3/2$. However, it was found that the exponent converges at $ϕ_{\rm BEC} =3/2$ with decreasing fitting window.

Observation of Modulated Quadrupolar Structures in PrPb3

Neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on the cubic compound PrPb3 in a [001] magnetic field to examine the quadrupolar ordering. Antiferromagnetic components with q=(1/2+-d 1/2 0), (1/2 1/2+-d 0) (d~1/8) are observed below the transition temperature TQ (0.4 K at H=0) whose amplitudes vary linear with H and vanish at zero field, providing the first evidence for a modulated quadrupolar phase. For H<1 T, a non-square modulated state persists even below 100 mK suggesting quadrupole moments associated with a Gamma3 doublet ground state to be partially quenched by hybridization with conduction electrons.

Observation of spin-wave characteristics in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic ordering of in-plane spins

The role of dipolar interactions and anisotropy are important to obtain, otherwise forbidden, ferromagnetic ordering at finite temperature for ions arranged in two-dimensional (2D) arrays (monolayers). Here we demonstrate that conventional low temperature magnetometry and polarized neutron scattering measurements can be performed to study ferromagnetic ordering of in-plane spins in 2D systems using a multilayer stack of non-interacting monolayers of gadolinium ions. The spontaneous magnetization is absent in the heterogenous magnetic phase observed here and the saturation value of the net magnetization was found to depend on the applied magnetic field. The net magnetization rises exponentially with lowering temperature and then reaches saturation following a $T\ln(βT)$ dependence. These findings verify predictions of the spin-wave theory of 2D in-plane spin system with ferromagnetic interaction and will initiate further theoretical development.

New High Field State of Flux Line Lattice in Unconventional Superconductor CeCoIn_5

Ultrasound velocity measurements of the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn_5 with extremely large Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility reveal an unusual structural transformation of the flux line lattice (FLL) in the vicinity of the upper critical field. The transition field coincides with that at which heat capacity measurements reveal a second order phase transition. The lowering of the sound velocity at the transition is consistent with the collapse of the FLL tilt modulus and a crossover to quasi two-dimensional FLL pinning. These results provide a strong evidence that the high field state is the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov phase, in which the order parameter is spatially modulated and has planar nodes aligned perpendicular to the vortices.

Field-angle Dependence of the Zero-Energy Density of States in the Unconventional Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5

Field-angle dependent specific heat measurement has been done on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 down to ~ 0.29 K, in a magnetic field rotating in the tetragonal c-plane. A clear fourfold angular oscillation is observed in the specific heat with the minima (maxima) occurring along the [100] ([110]) directions. Oscillation persists down to low fields H << Hc2, thus directly proving the existence of gap nodes. The results indicate that the superconducting gap symmetry is most probably of dxy type.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor PrOs4Sb12

We investigated the magnetic phase diagram of the first Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 by means of high-resolution dc magnetization measurements in low temperatures down to 0.06K. The temperature dependence of the magnetization M(T) at 0.1kOe exhibits two distinct anomalies at Tc1=1.83K and Tc2=1.65K, in agreement with the specific heat measurements at zero field. Increasing magnetic field H, both Tc1(H) and Tc2(H) move toward lower temperatures without showing a tendency of intersecting to each other. Above 10kOe, the transition at Tc2(H) appears to merge into a line of the peak effect which is observed near the upper critical field Hc2 in the isothermal M(H) curves, suggesting a common origin for these two phenomena. The presence of the field-induced ordered phase (called phase A here) is confirmed for three principal directions above 40kOe, with the anisotropic A-phase transition temperature TA: TA[100] > TA[111] >TA[110]. The present results are discussed on the basis of crystalline-electrical-field level schemes with a non-magnetic ground state, with emphasis on a Gamma1 singlet as the possible ground state of Pr3+ in PrOs4Sb12.

Specific Heat of Kagome Ice in the Pyrochlore Oxide Dy2Ti2O7

A novel macroscopically degenerate state called kagome ice, which was recently found in a spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 in a magnetic field applied along the [111] direction of the cubic unit cell, is studied by specific heat measurements. The residual entropy of the kagome ice is estimated to be 0.65 J/K mol Dy, which is nearly 40 % of that for the tetrahedral spin ice obtained in a zero field (1.68 J/K mol Dy) and is in good agreement with a theoretical prediction. It is also reported that the kagom ice state, which is stabilized at a range of magnetic field of 0.3 ~ 0.6 T, is a 'gas' phase and condenses into a 'liquid' phase with nearly zero entropy at a critical field of 1 T.

Superconductivity at 1 K in Cd2Re2O7

We report the first pyrochlore oxide superconductor Cd2Re2O7. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystals evidence a bulk superconductivity at 1 K. Another phase transition found at 200 K suggests that a peculiar electronic structure lies behind the superconductivity.

Effect of Pressure on Tiny Antiferromagnetic Moment in the Heavy-Electron Compound URu_2Si_2

We have performed elastic neutron-scattering experiments on the heavy-electron compound URu_2Si_2 for pressure P up to 2.8 GPa. We have found that the antiferrmagnetic (100) Bragg reflection below T_m ~ 17.5 K is strongly enhanced by applying pressure. For P < 1.1 GPa, the staggered moment mu_o at 1.4 K increases linearly from ~ 0.017(3) mu_B to ~ 0.25(2) mu_B, while T_m increases slightly at a rate ~ 1 K/GPa, roughly following the transition temperature T_o determined from macroscopic anomalies. We have also observed a sharp phase transition at P_c ~ 1.5 GPa, above which a 3D-Ising type of antiferromagnetic phase (mu_o ~ 0.4 mu_B) appears with a slightly reduced lattice constant.
