Dynamical Coupled-Channel Model of $πN$ Scattering in the W $\leq$ 2 GeV Nucleon Resonance Region

As a first step to analyze the electromagnetic meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region, the parameters of the hadronic interactions of a dynamical coupled-channel model, developed in {\it Physics Reports 439, 193 (2007)}, are determined by fitting the $πN$ scattering data. The channels included in the calculations are $πN$, $ηN$ and $ππN$ which has $πΔ$, $ρN$, and $σN$ resonant components. The non-resonant meson-baryon interactions of the model are derived from a set of Lagrangians by using a unitary transformation method. One or two bare excited nucleon states in each of $S$, $P$, $D$, and $F$ partial waves are included to generate the resonant amplitudes in the fits. The parameters of the model are first determined by fitting as much as possible the empirical $πN$ elastic scattering amplitudes of SAID up to 2 GeV. We then refine and confirm the resulting parameters by directly comparing the predicted differential cross section and target polarization asymmetry with the original data of the elastic $π^{\pm} p \to π^{\pm} p$ and charge-exchange $π^- p \to π^0 n$ processes. The predicted total cross sections of $πN$ reactions and $πN\to ηN$ reactions are also in good agreement with the data. Applications of the constructed model in analyzing the electromagnetic meson production data as well as the future developments are discussed.

Backward-angle photoproduction of $π^0$ mesons on the proton at $E_γ$ = 1.5--2.4 GeV

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for $π^0$ photoproduction have been measured at $E_γ$ = 1.5--2.4 GeV and at the $π^0$ scattering angles, --1 $<$ cos$Θ_{c.m.} <$ --0.6. The energy-dependent slope of differential cross sections for $u$-channel $π^0$ production has been determined. An enhancement at backward angles is found above $E_γ$ = 2.0 GeV. This is inferred to be due to the $u$-channel contribution and/or resonances. Photon beam asymmetries have been obtained for the first time at backward angles. A strong angular dependence has been found at $E_γ>$ 2.0 GeV, which may be due to the unknown high-mass resonances.

Vortex Lattice Structures of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Rotating Triangular Lattice Potential

We study the vortex pinning effect in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the presence of a rotating lattice potential by numerically solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We consider a triangular lattice potential created by blue-detuned laser beams. By rotating the lattice potential, we observe a transition from the Abrikosov vortex lattice to the pinned vortex lattice. We investigate the transition of the vortex lattice structure by changing conditions such as angular velocity, strength, and lattice constant of a rotating lattice potential. Our simulation results clearly show that the lattice potential has a strong vortex pinning effect when the vortex density coincides with the density of the pinning points.

Neutrino-nucleus reactions in the delta resonance region

Reliable estimates of neutrino-nucleus reactions in the resonance-excitation region play an important role in many of the on-going and planned neutrino oscillation experiments. We study here neutrino-nucleus reactions in the delta-particle excitation region with the use of neutrino pion-production amplitudes calculated in a formalism in which the resonance contributions and the background amplitudes are treated on the same footing. Our approach leads to the neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections that are significantly different from those obtained in the conventional approach wherein only the pure resonance amplitudes are taken into account. To assess the reliability of our formalism, we calculate the electron-nucleus scattering cross sections in the same theoretical framework; the calculated cross sections agree reasonably well with the existing data.

Two-pion-exchange contributions to the pp\to ppπ^0 reaction

Our previous study of the near-threshold pp\to ppπ^0 reaction based on a hybrid nuclear effective field theory is further elaborated by examining the momentum dependence of the relevant transition operators. We show that the two-pion exchange diagrams give much larger contributions than the one-pion exchange diagram, even though the former is of higher order in the Weinberg counting scheme. The relation between our results and an alternative counting scheme, the momentum counting scheme, is also discussed.

Extraction and Interpretation of gamma N --> Delta Form Factors within a Dynamical Model

Within the dynamical model of Refs. [Phys. Rev. C54, 2660 (1996); C63, 055201 (2001)], we perform an analysis of recent data of pion electroproduction reactions at energies near the Delta(1232) resonance. We discuss possible interpretations of the extracted bare and dressed gamma N --> Delta form factors in terms of relativistic constituent quark models and Lattice QCD calculations. Possible future developments are discussed.

NMR of superfluid 3He in anisotropic aerogel

We report on orientation of the order parameter in the 3He-A and 3He-B phases caused by aerogel anisotropy. In 3He-A we have observed relatively homogeneous NMR line with an anomalously large negative frequency shift. We can attribute this effect to an orientation of orbital momentum along the axis of density anisotropy. The similar orientation effect we have seen in 3He-B. We can measure the A-phase Leggett frequency, which shows the same energy gap suppression as in the B-phase. We observe a correlation of A - B transition temperature and NMR frequency shift.

Bulk and surface low-energy excitations in YBa2Cu3O7-d studied by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y123; delta = 0.06; Tc = 92 K). By accurately determining the Fermi surface and energy band dispersion, we solve long-standing controversial issues as to the anomalous electronic states of Y-based high-Tc cuprates. We unambiguously identified surface-bilayer-derived bonding and antibonding bands, together with their bulk counterparts. The surface bands are highly overdoped (hole concentration x = 0.29), showing no evidence for the gap opening or the dispersion anomaly in the antinodal region, while the bulk bands show a clear dx2-y2-wave superconducting gap and the Bogoliubov quasiparticle-like behavior with a characteristic energy scale of 50-60 meV indicative of a strong electron-boson coupling in the superconducting state. All these results suggest that the metallic and superconducting states coexist at the adjacent bilayer of Y123 surface.

Room Temperature Reversible Spin Hall Effect

Reversible spin Hall effect comprising the "direct" and "inverse" spin Hall effects was successfully detected at room temperature. This experimental demonstration proves the fundamental relations called Onsager reciprocal relations between spin and charge currents. A platinum wire with a strong spin-orbit interaction is used not only as a spin current absorber but also as a spin current source in the present lateral structure specially designed for clear detection of both charge and spin accumulations via the spin-orbit interaction. The obtained spin Hall conductivity is much larger than the reported value of Aluminum wire because of the larger spin-orbit interaction.

Dynamical coupled-channel model of meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region

A dynamical coupled-channel model is presented for investigating the nucleon resonances in the meson production reactions induced by pions and photons. The model is based on an energy-independent Hamiltonian which is derived from a set of Lagrangians by using a unitary transformation method. By applying the projection operator techniques,we derive a set of coupled-channel equations which satisfy the unitarity conditions within the channel space spanned by the considered two-particle meson-baryon states and the three-particle $ππN$ state. We present and explain in detail a numerical method based on a spline-function expansion for solving the resulting coupled-channel equations which contain logarithmically divergent one-particle-exchange driving terms resulted from the $ππN$ unitarity cut. We show that this driving term can generate rapidly varying structure in the reaction amplitudes associated with the unstable particle channels. It also has large effects in determining the two-pion production cross sections. Our results indicate that cautions must be taken to interpret the $N^*$ parameters extracted from using models which do not include $ππN$ cut effects.

Shadow bands in single-layered Bi_2Sr_2CuO_6 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2x2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. We conclude that the shadow band is related to the orthorhombic distortion at the crystal surface.

From Fermi Arcs to the Nodal Metal: Scaling of the Pseudogap with Doping and Temperature

The pseudogap phase in the cuprates is a most unusual state of matter: it is a metal, but its Fermi surface is broken up into disconnected segments known as Fermi arcs. Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the anisotropy of the pseudogap in momentum space and the resulting arcs depend only on the ratio T/T*(x), where T*(x) is the temperature below which the pseudogap first develops at a given hole doping x. In particular, the arcs collapse linearly with T/T* and extrapolate to zero extent as T goes to 0. This suggests that the T = 0 pseudogap state is a nodal liquid, a strange metallic state whose gapless excitations are located only at points in momentum space, just as in a d-wave superconductor.

Fermi Surface and Anisotropic Spin-Orbit Coupling of Sb(111) studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been performed on Sb(111) to elucidate the origin of anomalous electronic properties in group-V semimetal surfaces. The surface was found to be metallic despite the semimetallic character of bulk. We clearly observed two surface-derived Fermi surfaces which are likely spin split, demonstrating that the spin-orbit interaction plays a dominant role in characterising the surface electronic states of group-V semimetals. Universality/disimilarity of the electronic structure in Bi and Sb is discussed in relation to the granular superconductivity, electron-phonon coupling, and surface charge/spin density wave.

Use of V_{low-k} in a chiral-perturbation-theory description of the $pp\to ppπ^0$ reaction

Previously, the near-threhold $pp\to ppπ^0$ reaction was studied with the use of transition operators derived from chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) and the nuclear wave functions generated by high-precision phenomenological potentials. A conceptual problem in that approach was that the transition amplitude receives contributions from very high momentum components (above the cutoff scale of $χ$PT) in the nuclear wave functions. In the present work, we avoid this problem by replacing the "bare" phenomenological potentials with V_{low-k}, which is an effective potential derived from a bare potential by integrating out momentum components higher than a specified cutoff scale. The use of V_{low-k} is found to give an enhancement of the $pp\to ppπ^0$ cross sections over the values obtained with bare potentials. Although this enhancement brings the calculated cross sections closer to the experimental values, the incident-energy dependence of the cross section is not well reproduced, a problem that seems to indicate the necessity of including higher chiral order terms than considered in the present work.

Solitons of Sigma Model on Noncommutative Space as Solitons of Electron System

We study the relationship of soliton solutions for electron system with those of the sigma model on the noncommutative space, working directly in the operator formalism. We find that some soliton solutions of the sigma model are also the solitons of the electron system and are classified by the same topological numbers.
