Extraction of Transition Form Factors for Nucleon Resonances within a Coupled-Channels Model

We explain how an analytic continuation we have developed recently is applied to determine the residues of the nucleon resonance poles within a dynamical coupled-channel model of meson-baron reactions. A procedure for evaluating the electromagnetic N-N^* transition form factors at resonance poles is developed. Illustrative results of the obtained N^* -> pi N, gamma N transition form factors for P_{11}, P_{33}, and D_{13} nucleon resonances are presented and compared with previous results.

Dynamical Model of Coherent Pion Production in Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

We study coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the energy region relevant to neutrino oscillation experiments of current interest. Our approach is based on a combined use of the Sato-Lee model of electroweak pion production on a nucleon and the Delta-hole model of pion-nucleus reactions. Thus we develop a model which describes pion-nucleus scattering and electroweak coherent pion production in a unified manner. Numerical calculations are carried out for the case of the 12C target. All the free parameters in our model are fixed by fitting to both total and elastic differential cross sections for pi-12C scattering. Then we demonstrate the reliability of our approach by confronting our prediction for the coherent pion photo-productions with data. Finally, we calculate total and differential cross sections for neutrino-induced coherent pion production, and some of the results are (will be) compared with the recent (forthcoming) data from K2K, SciBooNE and MiniBooNE. We also study effect of the non-locality of the Delta-propagation in the nucleus, and compare the elementary amplitudes used in different microscopic calculations.

Observation of Dirac Cone Electronic Dispersion in BaFe2As2

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaFe2As2, which is the parent compound of the so-called 122 phase of the iron-pnictide high-temperature superconductors. We reveal the existence of a Dirac cone in the electronic structure of this material below the spin-density-wave temperature, which is responsible for small spots of high photoemission intensity at the Fermi level. Our analysis suggests that the cone is slightly anisotropic and its apex is located very near the Fermi level, leading to tiny Fermi surface pockets. Moreover, the bands forming the cone show an anisotropic leading edge gap away from the cone that suggests a nodal spin-density-wave description.

Dynamical coupled-channels analysis of 1H(e,e'pi)N reactions

We have performed a dynamical coupled-channels analysis of available p(e,e'pi)N data in the region of W < 1.6 GeV and Q^2 < 1.45 (GeV/c)^2. The channels included are gamma^* N, pi N, eta N, and pi pi N which has pi Delta, rho N, and sigma N components. With the hadronic parameters of the model determined in our previous investigations of pi N --> pi N, pi pi N reactions, we have found that the available data in the considered W < 1.6 GeV region can be fitted well by only adjusting the bare gamma^* N --> N^* helicity amplitudes for the lowest N^* states in P33, P11, S11 and D13 partial waves. The sensitivity of the resulting parameters to the amount of data included in the analysis is investigated. The importance of coupled-channels effect on the p(e,e' pi)N cross sections is demonstrated. The meson cloud effects, as required by the unitarity conditions, on the gamma^* N --> N^* form factors are also examined. Necessary future developments, both experimentally and theoretically, are discussed.

Dynamical Model of Coherent Electroweak Pion Production Reactions on Nuclei

We have developed a dynamical model for a unified description of the pion-nucleus scattering and photo- and neutrino-induced coherent pion production on nuclei. Our approach is based on a combined use of the Sato-Lee model for the electroweak pion production on a single nucleon and the Delta-hole model of pion-nucleus scattering. Numerical calculations are carried out for the case of the C12 target. After testing our model with the use of the pion photo-production data, we confront our predictions of the neutrino-induced coherent pion production reactions with the recent data from K2K and MiniBooNE.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy of Iron-Chalcogenide Superconductor Fe1.03Te0.7Se0.3 : Strong-Coupling Superconductivity and Universality of Inter-Band Scattering

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of iron-chalcogenide superconductor Fe1.03Te0.7Se0.3 (Tc = 13 K) to investigate the electronic structure relevant to superconductivity. We observed a hole- and an electron-like Fermi surfaces at the Brillouin zone center and corner, respectively, which are nearly nested by the Q~(pi, pi) wave vector. We do not find evidence for the nesting instability with Q~(pi+delta, 0) reminiscent of the antiferromagnetic order in the parent compound Fe1+yTe. We have observed an isotropic superconducting gap along the hole-like Fermi surface with the gap size Delta of ~4 meV (2Delta/kBTc~7), demonstrating the strong-coupling nature of the superconductivity. The observed similarity of low-energy electronic excitations between iron-chalcogenide and iron-arsenide superconductors strongly suggests that common interactions which involve Q~(pi, pi) scattering are responsible for the superconducting pairing.

Two-pion-exchange and other higher-order contributions to the $pp\to ppπ^0$ reaction

Much effort has been invested on effective-field-theoretical studies of the near-threshold NN \to NNπreactions and, in order to deal with the rather large three-momentum transfers involved, the momentum counting scheme was proposed as an alternative to the usual Weinberg counting scheme. To examine the practical utility of the momentum counting scheme, we study here the contributions of higher-order terms to the pp\to ppπ^0 reaction. We discuss the consequences of the different treatments of the nucleon propagators in these two counting schemes. We also investigate certain higher chiral-order pion-rescattering terms and the five-point counter-term, which turn out to give important contributions.

Low-lying spectrum of the Y-string three-quark potential using hyper-spherical coordinates

We calculate the energies of three-quark states with definite permutation symmetry (i.e. of SU(6) multiplets) in the N=0,1,2 shells, confined by the Y-string three-quark potential. The exact Y-string potential consists of one, so-called three-string term, and three angle-dependent two-string terms. Due to this technical complication we treat the problem at three increasingly accurate levels of approximation: 1) the (approximate) three-string potential expanded to first order in trigonometric functions of hyper-spherical angles; 2) the (approximate) three-string potential to all orders in the power expansion in hyper-spherical harmonics, but without taking into account the transition(s) to two-string potentials; 3) the exact minimal-length string potential to all orders in power expansion in hyper-spherical harmonics, and taking into account the transition(s) to two-string potentials. We show the general trend of improvement %convergence of these approximations: The exact non-perturbative corrections to the total energy are of the order of one per cent, as compared with approximation 2), yet the exact energy differences between the $[20,1^{+}], [70,2^{+}], [56,2^{+}], [70,0^{+}]$-plets are shifted to 2:2:0.9, from the Bowler and Tynemouth separation rule 2:2:1, which is obeyed by approximation 2) at the one per cent level. The precise value of the energy separation of the first radial excitation ("Roper") $[56^{\prime},0^{+}]$-plet from the $[70,1^{-}]$-plet depends on the approximation, but does not become negative, i.e. the "Roper" remains heavier than the odd-parity $[70,1^{-}]$-plet in all of our approximations.

Fermi surface nesting induced strong pairing in iron-based superconductors

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides raised the possibility of an unconventional superconducting mechanism in multiband materials. The observation of Fermi-surface(FS)-dependent nodeless superconducting gaps suggested that inter-FS interactions may play a crucial role in superconducting pairing. In the optimally hole-doped Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, the pairing strength is enhanced simultaneously (2$Δ$/Tc$\sim$7) on the nearly nested FS pockets, i.e. the inner holelike ($α$) FS and the two hybridized electronlike FSs, while the pairing remains weak (2$Δ$/Tc$\sim$3.6) in the poorly-nested outer hole-like ($β$) FS. Here we report that in the electron-doped BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$ the FS nesting condition switches from the $α$ to the $β$ FS due to the opposite size changes for hole- and electron-like FSs upon electron doping. The strong pairing strength (2$Δ$/Tc$\sim$6) is also found to switch to the nested $β$ FS, indicating an intimate connection between FS nesting and superconducting pairing, and strongly supporting the inter-FS pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors.

Neutrino deuteron reaction in the heating mechanism of core-collapse supernovae

We examine a potential role of the neutrino deuteron reactions in the mechanism of supernova explosion by evaluating the energy transfer cross section for the neutrino heating. We calculate the energy loss rate due to the neutrino absorptions through the charged-current process as well as the neutrino scattering through the neutral-current process. In so doing, we adopt a detailed evaluation of cross sections for the neutrino deuteron reactions with the phenomenological Lagrangian approach. We find the energy transfer cross section for the deuteron is larger than those for $^{3}$H, $^{3}$He and $^{4}$He for neutrino temperatures (T$_ν$ $\sim 4$ MeV) relevant to supernova core. Because of the low energy threshold for the deuteron breakup, the energy transfer rate rapidly increases from low temperature, T$_ν$ $\sim 1$ MeV. This suggests that the neutrino deuteron reactions may contribute effectively to the heating mechanism during the dissociation of irons into light elements and nucleons in the shocked material of supernova core.

Evolution of a pairing-induced pseudogap from the superconducting gap of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6

We have performed an ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of slightly-overdoped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of pseudogap. By using a newly developed xenon-plasma light source, we determined the comprehensive momentum and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. We found that the antinodal pseudogap persists far above the superconducting transition temperature and is smoothly connected to the nodal gap. The characteristic temperature of the pseudogap scales well with the superconducting-gap size irrespective of the momentum location. The present experimental results point to the pairing origin of the pseudogap.

Superconducting gap symmetry of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the optimally-doped Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compound and determined the accurate momentum dependence of the superconducting (SC) gap in four Fermi-surface sheets including a newly discovered outer electron pocket at the M point. The SC gap on this pocket is nearly isotropic and its magnitude is comparable ($Δ$ $\sim$ 11 meV) to that of the inner electron and hole pockets ($\sim$12 meV), although it is substantially larger than that of the outer hole pocket ($\sim$6 meV). The Fermi-surface dependence of the SC gap value is basically consistent with $Δ$($k$) = $Δ$$_0$cos$k_x$cos$k_y$ formula expected for the extended s-wave symmetry. The observed finite deviation from the simple formula suggests the importance of multi-orbital effects.

Electronic structure of heavily electron-doped BaFe$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$As$_2$ studied by angle-resolved photoemission

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on heavily electron-doped non-superconducting (SC) BaFe$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$As$_2$. We find that the two hole Fermi surface pockets at the zone center observed in the hole-doped superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ are absent or very small in this compound, while the two electron pockets at the M point significantly expand due to electron doping by the Co substitution. Comparison of the Fermi surface between non-SC and SC samples indicates that the coexistence of hole and electron pockets connected via the antiferromagnetic wave vector is essential in realizing the mechanism of superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors.

Study of the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the momentum region 140<Ppi<199 MeV/c

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 < P_pi < 199 MeV/c in an exposure of 1.71e12 stopped kaons with an estimated total background of 0.93+-0.17(stat.)+0.32-0.24(syst.) events. This brings the total number of observed K+ => pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10. An interpretation of the results for alternative models of the decay K^ => pi+,nothing is also presented.

Extraction of Resonances from Meson-Nucleon Reactions

We present a pedagogical study of the commonly employed Speed-Plot (SP) and Time-delay (TD) methods for extracting the resonance parameters from the data of two particle coupled-channels reactions. Within several exactly solvable models, it is found that these two methods find poles on different Riemann sheets and are not always valid. We then develop an analytic continuation method for extracting the nucleon resonances within a dynamical coupled-channel formulation of the $πN$ and $γN$ reactions. The main focus is on resolving the complications due to the coupling with the unstable $πΔ, ρN, σN$ channels which decay into $ππN$ states. By using the results from the considered exactly solvable models, explicit numerical procedures are presented and verified. As a first application of the developed analytic continuation method, we present the nucleon resonances in the $S_{11}$ and $S_{31}$ partial waves extracted within a recently developed coupled-channels model of $πN$ reactions. The results from this realistic $πN$ model, which includes $πN$, $ηN$, $πΔ$, $ρN$, and $σN$ channels, also show that the simple pole parametrization of the resonant propagator using the poles extracted from SP and TD methods works poorly.

Search for a light pseudoscalar particle in the decay $K^0_L \to π^0 π^0 X$

We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle $X$ in the decay $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->γγ$ with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/$c^2$ was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for $X$ and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->γγ$ of $2.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of $X$ from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/$c^2$ are also presented.
