Energy and symmetry of $dd$ excitations in undoped layered cuprates measured by Cu $L_3$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We measured high resolution Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of the undoped cuprates La$_2$CuO$_4$, Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, CaCuO$_2$ and NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$. The dominant spectral features were assigned to $dd$ excitations and we extensively studied their polarization and scattering geometry dependence. In a pure ionic picture, we calculated the theoretical cross sections for those excitations and used them to fit the experimental data with excellent agreement. By doing so, we were able to determine the energy and symmetry of Cu-3$d$ states for the four systems with unprecedented accuracy and confidence. The values of the effective parameters could be obtained for the single ion crystal field model but not for a simple two-dimensional cluster model. The firm experimental assessment of $dd$ excitation energies carries important consequences for the physics of high $T_c$ superconductors. On one hand, having found that the minimum energy of orbital excitation is always $\geq 1.4$ eV, i.e., well above the mid-infrared spectral range, leaves to magnetic excitations (up to 300 meV) a major role in Cooper pairing in cuprates. On the other hand, it has become possible to study quantitatively the effective influence of $dd$ excitations on the superconducting gap in cuprates.

Measurement of magnetic excitations in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Sr2CuO2Cl2 insulator using resonant x-ray scattering:Evidence for extended interactions

Using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we performed a momentum-resolved study of magnetic excitations in the model spin-1/2 2D antiferromagnetic insulator Sr_2CuCl_2O_2. We identify both a single-spin-wave feature and a multi-magnon continuum, and show that the X-ray polarization can be used to distinguish these two contributions in the cross-section. The spin-waves display a large (70 meV) dispersion between the zone-boundary points ($π$,0) and ($π$/2,$π$/2). Employing an extended $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$U$ one-band Hubbard model, we find significant electronic hopping beyond nearest-neighbor Cu ions. We conclude that sizeable extended magnetic interactions are present in \scoc{} and probably important in all undoped cuprates.

Evidence for core-hole-mediated inelastic x-ray scattering from metallic Fe$_{1.087}$Te

We present a detailed analysis of resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS) from Fe$_{1.087}$Te with unprecedented energy resolution. In contrast to the sharp peaks typically seen in insulating systems at the transition metal $L_3$ edge, we observe spectra which show different characteristic features. For low energy transfer, we experimentally observe theoretically predicted many-body effects of resonant Raman scattering from a non-interacting gas of fermions. Furthermore, we find that limitations to this many-body electron-only theory are realized at high Raman shift, where an exponential lineshape reveals an energy scale not present in these considerations. This regime, identified as emission, requires considerations of lattice degrees of freedom to understand the lineshape. We argue that both observations are intrinsic general features of many-body physics of metals.

High-resolution soft-X-ray beamline ADRESS at Swiss Light Source for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopies

We describe the concepts and technical realization of the high-resolution soft-X-ray beamline ADRESS operating in the energy range from 300 to 1600 eV and intended for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) and Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARPES). The photon source is an undulator of novel fixed-gap design where longitudinal movement of permanent magnetic arrays controls not only the light polarization (including circular and 0-180 deg rotatable linear polarizations) but also the energy without changing the gap. The beamline optics is based on the well-established scheme of plane grating monochromator (PGM) operating in collimated light. The ultimate resolving power E/dE is above 33000 at 1 keV photon energy. The choice of blazed vs lamellar gratings and optimization of their profile parameters is described. Due to glancing angles on the mirrors as well as optimized groove densities and profiles of the gratings, high photon flux is achieved up to 1.0e13 photons/s/0.01%BW at 1 keV. Ellipsoidal refocusing optics used for the RIXS endstation demagnifies the vertical spot size down to 4 um, which allows slitless operation and thus maximal transmission of the high-resolution RIXS spectrometer delivering E/dE better than 11000 at 1 keV photon energy. Apart from the beamline optics, we give an overview of the control system, describe diagnostics and software tools, and discuss strategies used for the optical alignment. An introduction to the concepts and instrumental realization of the ARPES and RIXS endstations is given.

Evidence for Dynamic Phase Separation and High Energy Spin Dynamics in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

We probe the collective magnetic modes of La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) and underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) by momentum resolved Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L_3$ edge. In LCO the single magnon dispersion measured by RIXS coincides with the one determined by inelastic neutron scattering. For LSCO the spin dynamics shows a branch dispersing up to $\sim$400 meV coexisting with a branch at lower energy. Only the latter has been observed with neutrons so far and is considered a key signature of doped cuprates. The presence of the high-energy branch indicates that LSCO is in a dynamic inhomogeneous spin state.

Momentum dependence of orbital excitations in Mott-insulating titanates

High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering has been used to determine the momentum dependence of orbital excitations in Mott-insulating LaTiO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$ over a wide range of the Brillouin zone. The data are compared to calculations in the framework of lattice-driven and superexchange-driven orbital ordering models. A superexchange model in which the experimentally observed modes are attributed to two-orbiton excitations yields the best description of the data.

Collective spin excitations in a quantum spin ladder probed by high-resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We investigate magnetic excitations in the spin-ladder compound Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ using high-resolution Cu $L_3$-edge Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS). Our findings demonstrate that RIXS couples to collective spin excitations from a quantum spin-liquid ground state. In contrast to Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS), the RIXS cross section changes only moderately over the entire Brillouin Zone (BZ), revealing a high sensitivity also at small momentum transfers. The two-triplon energy gap is found to be $100\pm 30$ meV. Our results are supported by calculations within an effective Hubbard model for a finite-size cluster.

Momentum selectivity and anisotropy effects in the nitrogen K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering from GaN

High-resolution soft X-ray emission and absorption spectra near the N K-edge of wurtzite GaN are presented. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of band structure based full-potential electronic structure calculations. The absorption spectra, compared with calculations including core hole screening, indicate partial core hole screening in the absorption process. The resonant emission spectra demonstrate pronounced dispersions of the spectral structures, identifying effects of momentum conservation due to resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) with anisotropic electronic structure of GaN. In view of a wide range of optoelectronic applications of GaN, our findings on the momentum selectivity in RIXS can be utilized in development of GaN based nanoelectronics devices by controlling direct vs indirect band gap character of GaN nanostructures.

Band structure effects in nitrogen K-edge resonant inelastic X ray scattering from GaN

Systematic experimental data on resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) in GaN near the N K-edge are presented for the first time. Excitation energy dependence of the spectral structures manifests the band structure effects originating from momentum selectivity of the RIXS process. This finding allows obtaining k-resolved band structure information for GaN crystals and nanostructures.

Nitrogen local electronic structure in Ga(In)AsN alloys by soft-X-ray absorption and emission: Implications for optical properties

Soft-X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies with their elemental specificity are used to determine the local electronic structure of N atoms in Ga(In)AsN diluted semiconductor alloys (N concentrations about 3%) in view of applications of such materials in optoelectronics. Deviations of the N local electronic structure in Ga(In)AsN from the crystalline state in GaN are dramatic in both valence and conduction bands. In particular, a depletion of the valence band maximum in the N local charge, taking place at the N impurities, appears as one of the fundamental origins of reduced optical efficiency of Ga(In)AsN. Incorporation of In in large concentrations forms In-rich N local environments such as In4N whose the electronic structure evolves towards improved efficiency. Furthermore, a k-character of some valence and conduction states, despite the random alloy nature of Ga(In)AsN, manifests itself in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering.

Electronic structure of GaAs1-xNx alloy by soft-X-ray absorption and emission: Origin of the reduced optical efficiency

The local electronic structure of N atoms in a diluted GaAs1-xNx (x=3%) alloy, in view of applications in optoelectronics, is determined for the first time using soft-X-ray absorption (SXA) and emission (SXE). Deviations from crystalline GaN, in particular in the conduction band, are dramatic. Employing the orbital character and elemental specificity of the SXE/SXA spectroscopies, we identify a charge transfer from the N atoms at the valence band maximum, reducing the overlap with the wavefunction in conduction band minimum, as the main factor limiting the optical efficiency of GaAs1-xNx alloys. Moreover, a k-conserving process of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering involving the L1 derived valence and conduction states is discovered.

The Mn L_2,L_3 x-ray spectra of the Cu_2MnAl and Co_2MnZ (Z=Al,Ga, Sn, Sb) Heusler alloys have been investigated by the Resonant X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (RXES) using linearly polarized monochromatic synchrotron radiation for. The interplay between the half-metallic character of the Mn 3d electronic structure in connection with the local magnetic moment $μ_{Mn}$ and Mn $2p\to 3d$ x-ray emission spectra is discussed.
