Phase transition of a Bose gas in a harmonic potential

We consider a dilute Bose gas confined by a harmonic potential. We define an appropriate thermodynamic limit and analyze the properties of the phases and phase transition in this limit. Critical properties in the presence of the potential are found to be different from, though simply related, to those in the usual translationally invariant case. We argue that the properties of magnetically trapped rubidium\cite{Wieman} and sodium\cite{ketterle} gases (in which Bose-Einstein condensation has been recently observed) are well approximated by our thermodynamic limit except in a narrow window of temperature around the critical temperature. We also consider the effect of the confining potential on the non-equilibrium dynamics following a rapid quench to the ordered side and give a scaling description of the late time universal dynamics.

Zero temperature phase transitions in quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets

The purpose of this work is to understand the zero temperature phases, and the phase transitions, of Heisenberg spin systems which can have an extensive, spontaneous magnetic moment; this entails a study of quantum transitions with an order parameter which is also a non-abelian conserved charge. To this end, we introduce and study a new class of lattice models of quantum rotors. We compute their mean-field phase diagrams, and present continuum, quantum field-theoretic descriptions of their low energy properties in different regimes. We argue that, in spatial dimension $d=1$, the phase transitions in itinerant Fermi systems are in the same universality class as the corresponding transitions in certain rotor models. We discuss implications of our results for itinerant fermions systems in higher $d$, and for other physical systems.

Critical Properties of Random Quantum Potts and Clock Models

We study zero temperature phase transitions in two classes of random quantum systems -the $q$-state quantum Potts and clock models. For models with purely ferromagnetic interactions in one dimension, we show that for strong randomness there is a second order transition with critical properties that can be determined exactly by use of an RG procedure. Somewhat surprisingly, the critical behaviour is completely independent of $q$ (for $2 \leq q < \infty$). For the $q > 4$ clock model, we suggest the existence of a novel multicritical point at intermediate randomness. We also consider the $T = 0$ transition from a paramagnet to a spin glass in an infinite range model. Assuming that the transition is second order, we solve for the critical behaviour and find $q$ independent exponents.

Quantum Phase Transition in Frustrated Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

We study frustrated, two-dimensional, quantum antiferromagnets in the vicinity of a quantum transition from a non-collinear, magnetically-ordered ground state to a quantum disordered phase. The general scaling properties of this transition are described. A detailed study of a particular field-theoretic model of the transition, with bosonic spin-1/2 spinon fields, is presented. Explicit universal scaling forms for a variety of observables are obtained and the results are compared with numerical data on the spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet. Universal properties of an alternative field-theory, with confined spinons, are also briefly noted.

Finite Temperature Properties of Quantum Antiferromagnets in a Uniform Magnetic Field in One and Two Dimensions

Consider a $d$-dimensional antiferromagnet with a quantum disordered ground state and a gap to bosonic excitations with non-zero spin. In a finite external magnetic field, this antiferromagnet will undergo a phase transition to a ground state with non-zero magnetization, describable as the condensation of a dilute gas of bosons. The finite temperature properties of the Bose gas in the vicinity of this transition are argued to obey a hypothesis of ZERO SCALE-FACTOR UNIVERSALITY for $d < 2$, with logarithmic violations in $d=2$. Scaling properties of various experimental observables are computed in an expansion in $ε=2-d$, and exactly in $d=1$.

Universal Magnetic Properties of Frustrated Quantum Antiferromagnets in Two Dimensions

We present a theory of frustrated, two-dimensional, quantum antiferromagnets in the vicinity of a quantum transition from a non-collinear, magnetically-ordered ground state to a quantum-disordered phase. Using a sigma-model for bosonic, spin-1/2, spinon fields, we obtain universal scaling forms for a variety of observables. Our results are compared with numerical data on the spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet.
