Crossover from a heavy fermion to intermediate valence state in noncentrosymmetric Yb2Ni12(P,As)7

We report measurements of the physical properties and electronic structure of the hexagonal compounds Yb2Ni12Pn7 (Pn = P, As) by measuring the electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat and partial fluorescence yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy (PFY-XAS). These demonstrate a crossover upon reducing the unit cell volume, from an intermediate valence state in Yb2Ni12As7 to a heavy-fermion paramagnetic state in Yb2Ni12P7, where the Yb is nearly trivalent. Application of pressure to Yb2Ni12P7 suppresses T_FL, the temperature below which Fermi liquid behavior is recovered, suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) under pressure. However, while there is little change in the Yb valence of Yb2Ni12P7 up to 30 GPa, there is a strong increase for Yb2Ni12As7 under pressure, before a near constant value is reached. These results indicate that any magnetic QCP in this system is well separated from strong valence fluctuations. The pressure dependence of the valence and lattice parameters of Yb2Ni12As7 are compared and at 1 GPa, there is an anomaly in the unit cell volume as well as a change in the slope of the Yb valence, indicating a correlation between structural and electronic changes.

Extraordinary Hall resistance and unconventional magnetoresistance in Pt/LaCoO3 hybrids

We report an investigation of transverse Hall resistance and longitudinal resistance on Pt thin films sputtered on epitaxial LaCoO$_3$ (LCO) ferromagnetic insulator films. The LaCoO$_3$ films were deposited on several single crystalline substrates [LaAlO$_3$ (LAO), (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O$_3$ (LSAT), and SrTiO$_3$ (STO)] with (001) orientation. The physical properties of LaCoO$_3$ films were characterized by the measurements of magnetic and transport properties. The LaCoO$_3$ films undergo a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (FM) transition at Curie temperatures ranging from 40 K to 85 K, below which the Pt/LCO hybrids exhibit significant extraordinary Hall resistance (EHR) up to 50 m$Ω$ and unconventional magnetoresistance (UCMR) ratio $Δ$$ρ$/$ρ_0$ about $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$, accompanied by the conventional magnetoresistance (CMR). The observed spin transport properties share some common features as well as some unique characteristics when compared with well-studied Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$-based Pt thin films. Our findings call for new theories since the extraordinary Hall resistance and magnetoresistance cannot be consistently explained by the existing theories.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropic effect in GdCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$AsO ($x = 0, 0.05$)

From a systematic study of the electrical resistivity $ρ(T,H)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T,H)$, isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ and the specific heat $C(T,H)$, a temperature-magnetic field ($T$-$H$) phase diagram has been established for GdCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$AsO ($x = 0$ and $0.05$) polycrystalline compounds. GdCoAsO undergoes two long-range magnetic transitions: ferromagnetic (FM) transition of Co $3d$ electrons ($T_\textup{C}^\textup{Co}$) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Gd $4f$ electrons ($T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$). For the Fe-doped sample ($x=0.05$), an extra magnetic reorientation transition takes place below $T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$, which is likely associated with Co moments. The two magnetic species of Gd and Co are coupled antiferromagnetically to give rise to ferrimagnetic (FIM) behavior in the magnetic susceptibility. Upon decreasing the temperature ($T < T_\textup{C}^\textup{Co}$), the magnetocrystalline anisotropy breaks up the FM order of Co by aligning the moments with the local easy axes of the various grains, leading to a spin reorientation transition at $T_\textup{R}^\textup{Co}$. By applying a magnetic field, $T_\textup{R}^\textup{Co}$ monotonically decreases to lower temperatures, while the $T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$ is relatively robust against the external field. On the other hand, the applied magnetic field pulls the magnetization of grains from the local easy direction to the field direction via a first-order reorientation transition, with the transition field ($H_\textup{M}$) increasing upon cooling the temperature.

Superconductivity and structural distortion in BaPt$_2$As$_2$

We successfully synthesized the BaPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals and studied their structural and physical properties at low temperatures. BaPt$_2$As$_2$ crystallizes in the CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type tetragonal structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature and undergoes a first-order structural transition at $T_S\simeq 275$ K, which is likely associated with a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. BCS-type superconductivity with two subsequent transitions at $T_{c1}=1.67$K and $T_{c2}$=1.33K are observed in this compound. Thus, BaPt$_2$As$_2$ may serve as a new system for studying the interplay of superconductivity and the CDW order.

CeIrIn5: Superconductivity on a Magnetic Instability

We report the doping-induced antiferromagnetic state and Fermi liquid state that are connected by a superconducting region in a series of CeIrIn$_{5-x}$Hg$_x$, CeIrIn$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$ and CeIr$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$In$_5$ single crystals. Measurements of the specific heat $C(T)$ and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ demonstrate that hole doping via Hg/In substitution gives rise to an antiferromagnetic ground state, but substitutions of In by Sn or Ir by Pt (electron doping) favor a paramagnetic Fermi liquid state. A cone-like non-Fermi liquid region is observed near CeIrIn$_5$, showing a diverging effective mass on the slightly Hg-doped side. The obtained temperature-doping phase diagram suggests that CeIrIn$_5$ is in proximity to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, and heavy fermion superconductivity in this compound is mediated by magnetic quantum fluctuations rather than by valence fluctuations.

Multiple quantum phase transitions in a heavy fermion antiferromagnet

We report measurements of magnetic quantum oscillations and specific heat at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP)(B_{c0}\approx50T) of the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn_5. A sharp magnetic-field induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Our results demonstrate multiple classes of QCPs in the field-pressure phase diagram of this heavy-fermion metal, pointing to a universal description of QCPs. They also suggest that robust superconductivity is promoted by unconventional quantum criticality of a fluctuating Fermi surface.

Tunable interplay between 3d and 4f electrons in Co-doped iron pnictides

We study the interplay of 3d and 4f electrons in the iron pnictides CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO and GdFe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$AsO, which correspond to two very different cases of $4f$-magnetic moment. Both CeFeAsO and GdFeAsO undergo a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe 3d electrons at high temperatures, which is rapidly suppressed by Fe/Co substitution. Superconductivity appears in a narrow doping range: $0.05 < x < 0.2$ for CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO and $0.05 < y < 0.25$ for GdFe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$AsO, showing a maximum transition temperature $T_\textup{sc}$ of about 13.5 K for Ce and 19 K for Gd. In both compounds, the $4f$-electrons form an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperatures over the entire doping range and Co 3d electrons are ferromagnetically ordered on the Co-rich side; the Curie temperature reaches $T_\textup{C}^\textup{Co} \approx$ 75 K at $x = 1$ and $y = 1$. In the Ce-compounds, the Néel temperature $T_\textup{N}^\textup{Ce}$ increases upon suppressing the SDW transition of Fe and then remains nearly unchanged with further increasing Co concentration up to $x \simeq 0.8$ ($T_\textup{N}^\textup{Ce}\approx$ 4 K). Furthermore, evidence of Co-induced polarization on Ce-moments is observed on the Co-rich side. In the Gd-compounds, the two magnetic species of Gd and Co are coupled antiferromagnetically to give rise to ferrimagnetic behavior in the magnetic susceptibility on the Co-rich side. For $0.7 \leq y < 1.0$, the system undergoes a possible magnetic reorientation below the Néel temperature of Gd ($T_\textup{N}^\textup{Gd}$). Our results suggest that the effects of both electron hybridizations and magnetic exchange coupling between the 3d-4f electrons give rise to a rich phase diagram in the rare-earth iron pnictides.

Moderate interaction between 3d- and 4f-electrons and ferrimagnetism in Co-doped GdFeAsO

We synthesized a series of GdFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO polycrystalline samples ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) by using a solid state reaction method and present a systematic study on the physical properties by means of electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and specific heat $C(T)$. The parent compound GdFeAsO undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe 3d-electrons around 130 K, followed by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Gd at $T^\textup{Gd}_\textup{N} \approx$ 4 K. The SDW transition is quickly suppressed by Fe/Co substitution and superconductivity appears in a narrow doping range of $0.05 < x < 0.25$, showing a maximum $T_\textup{sc}$ $\approx$ 20 K around $x = 0.1$. On the other hand, the 4f-electrons of Gd are antiferromagnetically ordered over the entire doping concentration ($0 \leq x \leq 1$), while the Co 3d-electrons exhibit a ferromagnetic (FM) transition above $x \approx 0.8$, with the Curie temperature ($T^\textup{Co}_\textup{C}$) reaching 75 K in GdCoAsO. These two magnetic species (Gd and Co) are coupled antiferromagnetically to give rise to ferrimagnetic behavior in magnetic susceptibility on the Co-rich side. For $0.7 \leq x < 1.0$, the system undergoes a possible magnetic reorientation below $T^\textup{Gd}_\textup{N}$.

Robust magnetic order of Ce 4f-electrons coexisting with superconductivity in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$

The electrical resistance of CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x = 0.06 and 0.08) has been measured in a magnetic field up to 40T. At zero field, the sample with x = 0.06 shows a structural phase transition around T$_S$~100K, followed by a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition around T$_{SDW}$~30K. For x = 0.08, the structural phase transition is suppressed down to T$_S$~60K without a clear anomaly associated with the Fe-SDW transition, and superconductivity shows up at T$_C$~25K. At lower temperatures, both samples show a clear resistive peak around T$_N$~4K, which is associated with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Ce-4f electrons. Strikingly, zero resistance is recovered upon further lowering temperature below T$_N$ for x = 0.08. Moreover, we found that the AFM transition of Ce 4f-electrons at 4K hardly changes with applying a magnetic field up to 40T, even in the case of x = 0.08, where superconductivity has been partially suppressed at such a large field.

Upper critical field and thermally activated flux flow in single crystalline Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$

The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}(T_c)$ of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ single crystals has been determined by means of measuring the electrical resistivity in both a pulsed magnetic field ($\sim$60T) and a DC magnetic field ($\sim$14T). It is found that $H_{c2}$ linearly increases with decreasing temperature for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, reaching $μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\parallel c}(0\textrm{K})\simeq60$ T. On the other hand, a larger $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ with a strong convex curvature is observed for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$ ($μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\perp c}$(18K)$\simeq$60T). This compound shows a moderate anisotropy of the upper critical field around $T_c$, but decreases with decreasing temperature. Analysis of the upper critical field based on the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) method indicates that $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ is orbitally limited for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, but the effect of spin paramagnetism may play an important role on the pair breaking for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$. All these experimental observations remarkably resemble those of the iron pnictide superconductors, suggesting a unified scenario for the iron-based superconductors. Moreover, the superconducting transition is significantly broadened upon applying a magnetic field, indicating strong thermal fluctuation effects in the superconducting state of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$. The derived thermal activation energy for vortex motion is compatible with those of the 1111-type iron pnictides.

Localized and itinerant dichotomy of electrons in Ba(Fe,Co)2As2

Variant approaches, either based on the Fermi surface nesting or started from the proximity to a Mott-insulator, were proposed to elucidate the physics in iron pnictides, but no consensus has been reached. A fundamental problem concerns the nature of their 3d electrons. Here we report the magnetoresistivity (ρ_xx) and the Hall resistivity (ρ_xy) of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x=0 and 0.05) in a magnetic field of up to 55T. The magnetic transition is extremely robust against magnetic field, giving strong evidence that the magnetic ordering is formed by local moments. The magnetic state is featured with a huge magnetoresistance and a distinguished Hall resistivity, ρ_xy(H), which shows a pronounced parabolic field dependence, while the paramagnetic state shows little magnetoresistance and follows a simple linear magnetic field dependence on the Hall resistivity. Analyses of our data, based on a two-carrier model, demonstrate that the electron carriers in the magnetic state rapidly increase upon applying a magnetic field, partially compensating the loss of electron carriers at T_M. We argue that the 3d-electrons in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 are divided into those who are close to forming localized moments controlling the magnetic transition and the others giving rise to complex transport properties through their interaction with the former.
