Quantum radiations from exciton condensate in Electron-Hole Bilayer Systems

Superfluid has been realized in Helium-4, Helium-3 and ultra-cold atoms. It has been widely used in making high-precision devices and also in cooling various systems. There have been extensive experimental search for possible exciton superfluid (ESF) in semiconductor electron-hole bilayer (EHBL) systems below liquid Helium temperature. However, exciton superfluid are meta-stable and will eventually decay through emitting photons. Here we study quantum nature of photons emitted from the excitonic superfluid (ESF) phase in the semiconductor EHBL and find that the light emitted from the excitonic superfluid has unique and unusual features not shared by any other atomic or condensed matter systems. We show that the emitted photons along the direction perpendicular to the layer are in a coherent state, those along all tilted directions are in a two modes squeezed state. We determine the two mode squeezing spectra, the angle resolved power spectrum, the line shapes of both the momentum distribution curve (MDC) and the energy distribution curve (EDC). From the two photon correlation functions, we find there are photon bunching, the photo-count statistics is super-Poissonian. We discuss how several important parameters such as the chemical potential, the exciton decay rate, the quasiparticle energy spectrum and the dipole-dipole interaction strength between the excitons in our theory can be extracted from the experimental data and comment on available experimental data on both EDC and MDC.

Recovering Unitarity of Lee Model in Bi-Orthogonal Basis

We study how to recover the unitarity of Lee model with the help of bi-orthogonal basis approach, when the physical coupling constant in renormalization exceeds its critical value, so that the Lee's Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian with respect to the conventional inner product. In a very natural fashion, our systematic approach based on bi-orthogonal basis leads to an elegant definition of inner product with a non-trivial metric, which can overcome all the previous problems in Lee model, such as non-Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian, the negative norm, the negative probability and the non-unitarity of the scattering matrix.

Multi-Stability of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Atom-Assisted Optomechanical Cavities

We study how an oscillating mirror affects the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of an atomic ensemble, which is confined in a gas cell placed inside a micro-cavity with an oscillating mirror in one end. The oscillating mirror is modeled as a quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator. The cavity field acts as a probe light of the EIT system and also produces a light pressure on the oscillating mirror. The back-action from the mirror to the cavity field results in several (from one to five) steady-states for this atom-assisted optomechanical cavity, producing a complex structure in its EIT. We calculate the susceptibility with respect to the few (from one to three) stable solutions found here for the equilibrium positions of the oscillating mirror. We find that the EIT of the atomic ensemble can be significantly changed by the oscillating mirror, and also that the various steady states of the mirror have different effects on the EIT.

Angle resolved photon spectrum and quasiparticle excitation spectrum in an exciton superfluid

There have been extensive experimental search for possible exciton superfluid in semiconductor electron-hole bilayer systems below liquid Helium temperature. However, exciton superfluid are meta-stable and will eventually decay through emitting photons. Here we show that the light emitted from the excitonic superfluid has unique and unusual features not shared by any other atomic or condensed matter systems. We evaluate angle resolved photon spectrum, momentum distribution curve, energy distribution curve and quasiparticle excitation spectrum in the exciton superfluid and comment on relevant experimental data in both exciton and exciton-polariton systems.

Photonic Feshbach Resonance

Hermann Feshbach predicted fifty years ago that when two atomic nuclei are scattered within an open entrance channel-- the state observable at infinity, they may enter an intermediate closed channel -- the locally bounded state of the nuclei. If the energy of a bound state of in the closed channel is fine-tuned to match the relative kinetic energy, then the open channel and the closed channel "resonate", so that the scattering length becomes divergent. We find that this so-called Feshbach resonance phenomenon not only exists during the collisions of massive particles, but also emerges during the coherent transport of massless particles, that is, photons confined in the coupled resonator arrays \cite{lzhou08}. We implement the open and the closed channels inside a pair of such arrays, linked by a separated cavity or a tunable qubit. When a single photon is bounded inside the closed channel by setting the relevant physical parameters appropriately, the vanishing transmission appears to display this photonic Feshbach resonance. The general construction can be implemented through various experimentally feasible solid state systems, such as the couple defected cavities in photonic crystals. The numerical simulation based on finite-different time-domain(FDTD) method confirms our conceive about physical implementation.

Quantum entanglement of two flux qubits induced by an auxiliary SQUID

We revisit a theoretical scheme to create quantum entanglement of two three-levels superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with the help of an auxiliary SQUID. In this scenario, two three-levels systems are coupled to a quantized cavity field and a classical external field and thus form dark states. The quantum entanglement can be produced by a quantum measurement on the auxiliary SQUID. Our investigation emphasizes the quantum effect of the auxiliary SQUID. For the experimental feasibility and accessibility of the scheme, we calculate the time evolution of the whole system including the auxiliary SQUID. To ensure the efficiency of generating quantum entanglement, relations between the measurement time and dominate parameters of the system are analyzed according to detailed calculations.

Effective boson-spin model for nuclei ensemble based universal quantum memory

We study the collective excitation of a macroscopic ensemble of polarized nuclei fixed in a quantum dot. Under the approximately homogeneous condition that we explicitly present in this paper, this many-particle system behaves as a single mode boson interacting with the spin of a single conduction band electron confined in this quantum dot. Within this effective spin-boson system, the quantum information carried by the electronic spin can be coherently transferred into the collective bosonic mode of excitation in the ensemble of nuclei. In this sense, the collective bosonic excitation can serve as a stable quantum memory to store the quantum information of spin state of electron.

On the Harmonic approximation for large Josephson junction coupling charge qubits

We revisit the harmonic approximation (HA) for a large Josephson junction interacting with some charge qubits through the variational approach for the quantum dynamics of the junction-qubit coupling system. By making use of numerical calculation and analytical treatment, the conditions under which HA works well can be precisely presented to control the parameters implementing the two-qubit quantum logical gate through the couplings to the large junction with harmonic oscillator (HO) Hamiltonian.

Quantum state transfer via the ferromagnetic chain in a spatially modulated field

We show that a perfect quantum state transmission can be realized through a spin chain possessing a commensurate structure of energy spectrum, which is matched with the corresponding parity. As an exposition of the mirror inversion symmetry discovered by Albanese et. al (quant-ph/0405029), the parity matched the commensurability of energy spectra help us to present the novel pre-engineered spin systems for quantum information transmission. Based on the these theoretical analysis, we propose a protocol of near-perfect quantum state transfer by using a ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with uniform coupling constant, but an external parabolic magnetic field. The numerical results shows that the initial Gaussian wave packet in this system with optimal field distribution can be reshaped near-perfectly over a longer distance.

Quantum decoherence in a supersymmetric mechanical system

We make a novel observation about the decoherence phenomenon of the fermion in the Witten's supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical model. It is shown that, when the bosonic partner in the SUNY model is unobservable in a certain energy scale, the quantum coherence meant by the superposition of fermion states can not be preserved for a long time due to the quantum decoherence induced by the overlooked boson. This refers to a supercharge superselection rule similar to the charge superselection. We numerically calculate the decoherence factor characterizing the extent of decoherence . The obtained result shows the periodic decoherence with finite quantum jump. Some analytic results under the harmonic approximation for the superpotential can be obtained to confirm the numerical calculations.

Quantum state transmission via a spin ladder as a robust data bus

We explore the physical mechanism to coherently transfer the quantum information of spin by connecting two spins to an isotropic antiferromagnetic spin ladder system as data bus. Due to a large spin gap existing in such a perfect medium, the effective Hamiltonian of the two connected spins can be archived as that of Heisenberg type, which possesses a ground state with maximal entanglement. We show that the effective coupling strength is inversely proportional to the distance of the two spins and thus the quantum information can be transferred between the two spins separated by a longer distance, i.e. the characteristic time of quantum state transferring linearly depends on the distance.
