Competition between unconventional superconductivity and incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in CeRh1-xCoxIn5

Elastic neutron diffraction measurements were performed on the quasi-two dimensional heavy fermion system CeRh1-xCoxIn5, ranging from an incommensurate antiferromagnet for low x to an unconventional superconductor on the Co-rich end of the phase diagram. We found that the superconductivity competes with the incommensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) order characterized by qI=(1/2, 1/2, delta) with delta=0.298, while it coexists with the commensurate AFM order with qc=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2). This is in sharp contrast to the CeRh1-xIrxIn5 system, where both the commensurate and incommensurate magnetic orders coexist with the superconductivity. These results reveal that particular areas on the Fermi surface nested by qI play an active role in forming the superconducting state in CeCoIn5.

Uncommonly High Upper Critical Field in the Superconducting KOs$_2$O$_6$ Pyrochlore

The entire temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ in the $β$-pyrochlore KOs$_2$O$_6$ is obtained from high-field resistivity and magnetic measurements. Both techniques identically give $H_{\rm c2}(T \simeq 0 {\rm K})$ not only surprisingly high ($\sim 33$ T), but also the approach to it unusually temperature-\emph{linear} all the way below $T_{\rm c}$ (= 9.6 K). We show that, while $H_{\rm c2}(0)$ exceeds a simple spin-singlet paramagnetic limit $H_{\rm P}$, it is well below an $H_{\rm P}$ enhanced due to the missing spatial inversion symmetry reported recently in KOs$_2$O$_6$, ensuring that the pair-breaking here is executed by orbital degrees. {\it Ab initio} calculations of orbital $H_{\rm c2}$ show that the unusual temperature dependence is reproduced if dominant s-wave superconductivity resides on the smaller closed Fermi surfaces.

Thermal Conductivity of the Pyrochlore Superconductor KOs2O6: Strong Electron Correlations and Fully Gapped Superconductivity

To elucidate the nature of the superconducting ground state of the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore KOs2O6 (Tc=9.6K), the thermal conductivity was measured down to low temperatures (~Tc/100). We found that the quasiparticle mean free path is strikingly enhanced below a transition at Tp=7.5K, indicating enormous electron inelastic scattering in the normal state. In a magnetic field the conduction at T ->0K is nearly constant up to ~0.4Hc2, in contrast with the rapid growth expected for superconductors with an anisotropic gap. This unambiguously indicates a fully gapped superconductivity, in contrast to the previous studies. These results highlight that KOs2O6 is unique among superconductors with strong electron correlations.

Zeeman and Orbital Limiting Fields: Separated Spin and Charge Degrees of Freedom in Cuprate Superconductors

Recent in-plane thermal (Nernst) and interlayer (tunnelling) transport experiments in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$ high temperature superconductors report hugely different limiting magnetic fields. Based on pairing (and the uncertainty principle) combined with the definitions of the Zeeman energy and the magnetic length, we show that in the underdoped regime both fields convert to the same (normal state) pseudogap energy scale $T^*$ upon transformation as orbital and spin (Zeeman) critical fields, respectively. We reconcile these seemingly disparate findings invoking separated spin and charge degrees of freedom residing in different regions of a truncated Fermi surface.

Stable ultrahigh-density magneto-optical recordings using introduced linear defects

The stability of data bits in magnetic recording media at ultrahigh densities is compromised by thermal `flips' -- magnetic spin reversals -- of nano-sized spin domains, which erase the stored information. Media that are magnetized perpendicular to the plane of the film, such as ultrathin cobalt films or multilayered structures, are more stable against thermal self-erasure than conventional memory devices. In this context, magneto-optical memories seem particularly promising for ultrahigh-density recording on portable disks, and bit densities of $\sim$100 Gbit inch$^{-2}$ have been demonstrated using recent advances in the bit writing and reading techniques. But the roughness and mobility of the magnetic domain walls prevents closer packing of the magnetic bits, and therefore presents a challenge to reaching even higher bit densities. Here we report that the strain imposed by a linear defect in a magnetic thin film can smooth rough domain walls over regions hundreds of micrometers in size, and halt their motion. A scaling analysis of this process, based on the generic physics of disorder-controlled elastic lines, points to a simple way by which magnetic media might be prepared that can store data at densities in excess of 1 Tbit inch$^{-2}$.

Closing the Pseudogap by Zeeman Splitting in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+y at High Magnetic Fields

Interlayer tunneling resistivity is used to probe the low-energy density-of-states (DOS) depletion due to the pseudogap in the normal state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$. Measurements up to 60 T reveal that a field that restores DOS to its ungapped state shows strikingly different temperature and doping dependencies from the characteristic fields of the superconducting state. The pseudogap closing field and the pseudogap temperature $T^{\star}$ evaluated independently are related through a simple Zeeman energy scaling. These findings indicate a predominant role of spins over the orbital effects in the formation of the pseudogap.

Asymmetric Field Profile in Bose Glass Phase of Irradiated YBa2Cu3O7-d: Loss of Interlayer Coherence around 1/3 of Matching Field

Magneto-optical imaging in YBa2Cu3O7-d with tilted columnar defects (CD's) shows an asymmetric critical-state field profile. The observed hysteretic shift of the profile ridge (trough) from the center of the sample is explained by in-plane magnetization originated from vortex alignment along CD's. The extracted ratio of the in-plane to out-of-plane magnetization component has a maximum at 1/5 of matching field ($B_Φ$) and disappears above $B_Φ/3$, suggesting a reduction of interlayer coherence well bellow $B_Φ$ in the Bose glass phase. Implications are discussed in comparison with the vortex liquid recoupling observed in irradiated Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y.

Vortex Matter Transition in Bi${}_2$Sr${}_2$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+y}$ under Tilted Fields

Vortex phase diagram under tilted fields from the $c$ axis in Bi${}_2$Sr${}_2$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+y}$ is studied by local magnetization hysteresis measurements using Hall probes. When the field is applied at large angles from the $c$ axis, an anomaly ($H_p^\ast$) other than the well-known peak effect ($H_p$) are found at fields below $H_p$. The angular dependence of the field $H_p^\ast$ is nonmonotonic and clearly different from that of $H_p$ and depends on the oxygen content of the crystal. The results suggest existence of a vortex matter transition under tilted fields. Possible mechanisms of the transition are discussed.

High-Field Quasiparticle Tunneling in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+delta: Negative Magnetoresistance in the Superconducting State

We report on the c-axis resistivity rho_c(H) in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} that peaks in quasi-static magnetic fields up to 60 T. By suppressing the Josephson part of the two-channel (Cooper pair/quasiparticle) conductivity σ_c (H), we find that the negative slope of ρ_c(H) above the peak is due to quasiparticle tunneling conductivity σ_q(H) across the CuO_2 layers below H_{c2}. At high fields (a) σ_q(H) grows linearly with H, and (b) ρ_c(T) tends to saturate (sigma_c \neq 0) as T->0, consistent with the scattering at the nodes of the d-gap. A superlinear sigma_q(H) marks the normal state above T_c.
