Nodeless superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric Mo$_3$Rh$_2$N superconductor: a $μ$SR study

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$_3$Rh$_2$N, with $T_c = 4.6$ K, adopts a $β$-Mn-type structure (space group $P$4$_1$32), similar to that of Mo$_3$Al$_2$C. Its bulk superconductivity was characterized by magnetization and heat-capacity measurements, while its microscopic electronic properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR). The low-temperature superfluid density, measured via transverse-field (TF)-$μ$SR, evidences a fully-gapped superconducting state with $Δ_0 = 1.73 k_\mathrm{B}T_c$, very close to 1.76 $k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ - the BCS gap value for the weak coupling case, and a magnetic penetration depth $λ_0 = 586$ nm. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of superconductivity, as determined by zero-field (ZF)-$μ$SR measurements, hints at a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. Both TF-and ZF-$μ$SR results evidence a spin-singlet pairing in Mo$_3$Rh$_2$N.

Chemical- and hydrostatic-pressure effects on the Kitaev honeycomb material Na$_2$IrO$_3$

The low-temperature magnetic properties of \tcr{polycrystalline} Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a candidate material for the realization of a quantum spin-liquid state, were investigated by means of muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance methods under chemical and hydrostatic pressure. The Li-for-Na chemical substitution promotes an inhomogeneous magnetic order, whereas hydrostatic pressure (up to 3.9\,GPa) results in an enhancement of the ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$. In the first case, the inhomogeneous magnetic order suggests either short- or long-range correlations of broadly distributed $j=\,$\textonehalf\ Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments, reflecting local disorder. The increase of $T_\mathrm{N}$ under applied pressure points at an increased strength of three dimensional interactions arising from interlayer compression.

Nodeless superconductivity in the cage-type superconductor Sc5Ru6Sn18 with preserved time-reversal symmetry

We report the single-crystal synthesis and detailed investigations of the cage-type superconductor Sc5Ru6Sn18, using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization, specific-heat and muon-spin relaxation (muSR) measurements. Sc5Ru6Sn18 crystallizes in a tetragonal structure (space group I41/acd) with the lattice parameters a = 1.387(3) nm and c = 2.641(5) nm. Both DC and AC magnetization measurements prove the type-II superconductivity in Sc5Ru6Sn18 with Tc = 3.5(1) K, a lower critical field H_c1 (0) = 157(9) Oe and an upper critical field, H_c2 (0) = 26(1) kOe. The zero-field electronic specific-heat data are well fitted using a single-gap BCS model, with superconducting gap = 0.64(1) meV. The Sommerfeld constant varies linearly with the applied magnetic field, indicating s-wave superconductivity in Sc5Ru6Sn18. Specific-heat and transverse-field (TF) muSR measurements reveal that Sc5Ru6Sn18 is a superconductor with strong electron-phonon coupling, with TF-muSR also suggesting the single-gap s-wave character of the superconductivity. Furthermore, zero-field muSR measurements do not detect spontaneous magnetic fields below Tc, hence implying that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in Sc5Ru6Sn18.

Magnetic phase diagram of Ca-substituted EuFe$_2$As$_2$

The simultaneous presence of a Fe-related spin-density wave and antiferromagnetic order of Eu$^{2+}$ moments ranks EuFe$_2$As$_2$ among the most interesting parent compounds of iron-based pnictide superconductors. Here we explore the consequences of the dilution of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic lattice through on-site Ca substitution. By employing macro- and microscopic techniques, including electrical transport and magnetometry, as well as muon-spin spectroscopy, we study the evolution of Eu magnetic order in both the weak and strong dilution regimes, achieved for Ca concentration $x(\mathrm{Ca}) = 0.12$ and 0.43, respectively. We demonstrate the localized character of the Eu antiferromagnetism mediated via RKKY interactions, in contrast with the largely itinerant nature of Fe magnetic interactions. Our results suggest a weak coupling between the Fe and Eu magnetic sublattices and a rapid decrease of the Eu magnetic interaction strength upon Ca substitution. The latter is confirmed both by the depression of the ordering temperature of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments, $T_\mathrm{N}$, and the decrease of magnetic volume fraction with increasing $x(\mathrm{Ca})$. We establish that, similarly to the EuFe$_2$As$_2$ parent compound, the investigated Ca-doped compounds have a twinned structure and undergo a permanent detwinning upon applying an external magnetic field.

Pressure effects on the electronic properties of the undoped superconductor ThFeAsN

The recently synthesized ThFeAsN iron-pnictide superconductor exhibits a $T_c$ of 30 K, the highest of the 1111-type series in absence of chemical doping. To understand how pressure affects its electronic properties, we carried out microscopic investigations up to 3 GPa via magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon-spin rotation experiments. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{75}$As Knight shift, the spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the magnetic penetration depth suggest a multi-band $s^{\pm}$-wave gap symmetry in the dirty limit, while the gap-to-$T_c$ ratio $Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ hints at a strong-coupling scenario. Pressure modulates the geometrical parameters, thus reducing $T_c$, as well as $T_m$, the temperature where magnetic-relaxation rates are maximized, both at the same rate of approximately -1.1 K/GPa. This decrease of $T_c$ with pressure is consistent with band-structure calculations, which relate it to the deformation of the Fe 3$d_{z^2}$ orbitals.

Nodal-to-nodeless superconducting order parameter in LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O synthesized under high pressure

Similar to chemical doping, pressure produces and stabilizes new phases of known materials, whose properties may differ greatly from those of their standard counterparts. Here, by considering a series of LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O iron-pnictides synthesized under high-pressure high-temperature conditions, we investigate the simultaneous effects of pressure and isoelectronic doping in the 1111 family. Results of numerous macro- and microscopic technique measurements, unambiguously show a radically different phase diagram for the pressure-grown materials, characterized by the lack of magnetic order and the persistence of superconductivity across the whole $0.3 \leq x \leq 0.7$ doping range. This unexpected scenario is accompanied by a branching in the electronic properties across $x = 0.5$, involving both the normal and superconducting phases. Most notably, the superconducting order parameter evolves from nodal (for $x < 0.5$) to nodeless (for $x \geq 0.5$), in clear contrast to other 1111 and 122 iron-based materials grown under ambient-pressure conditions.

Microscopic investigation of the weakly correlated noncentrosymmetric superconductor SrAuSi$_3$

SrAuSi$_3$ is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCS) with $T_c$ = 1.54 K, which to date has been studied only via macroscopic techniques. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements we investigate both the normal and the superconducting phase of SrAuSi$_3$ at a local level. In the normal phase, our data indicate a standard metallic behavior with weak electron correlations and a Korringa constant $S_\mathrm{exp} = 1.31 \times 10^{-5}$ sK. The latter, twice the theoretical value, can be justified by the Moriya theory of exchange enhancement. In the superconducting phase, the material exhibits conventional BCS-type superconductivity with a weak-coupling s-wave pairing, a gap value $Δ(0)$ = 0.213(2) meV, and a magnetic penetration depth $λ(0)$ = 398(2) nm. The experimental proof of weak correlations in SrAuSi$_{3}$ implies that correlation effects can be decoupled from those of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC), thus enabling accurate band-structure calculations in the weakly-correlated NCSs.

Nodeless superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re24Ti5

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_{24}$Ti$_{5}$, a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking candidate with $T_c = 6$\,K, was studied by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) techniques. At a macroscopic level, its bulk superconductivity was investigated via electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The low-temperature penetration depth, superfluid density and electronic heat capacity all evidence an $s$-wave coupling with an enhanced superconducting gap. The spontaneous magnetic fields revealed by zero-field $μ$SR below $T_c$ indicate a time-reversal symmetry breaking and thus the unconventional nature of superconductivity in Re$_{24}$Ti$_{5}$. The concomitant occurrence of TRS breaking also in the isostructural Re$_6$(Zr,Hf) compounds, hints at its common origin in this superconducting family and that an enhanced spin-orbital coupling does not affect pairing symmetry.

High-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductivity in undoped ThFeAsN

Unlike the widely studied ReFeAsO series, the newly discovered iron-based superconductor ThFeAsN exhibits a remarkably high critical temperature of 30 K, without chemical doping or external pressure. Here we investigate in detail its magnetic and superconducting properties via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques and show that ThFeAsN exhibits strong magnetic fluctuations, suppressed below 35 K, but no magnetic order. This contrasts strongly with the ReFeAsO series, where stoichiometric parent materials order antiferromagnetically and superconductivity appears only upon doping. The ThFeAsN case indicates that Fermi-surface modifications due to structural distortions and correlation effects are as important as doping in inducing superconductivity. The direct competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, which in ThFeAsN (as in LiFeAs) occurs at already zero doping, may indicate a significant deviation of the $s$-wave superconducting gap in this compound from the standard $s^{\pm}$ scenario.

Doping-induced superconductivity of ZrB$_2$ and HfB$_2$

Unlike the widely studied $s$-type two-gap superconductor MgB$_2$, the chemically similar compounds ZrB$_2$ and HfB$_2$ do not superconduct above 1 K. Yet, it has been shown that small amounts of self- or extrinsic doping (in particular with vanadium), can induce superconductivity in these materials. Based on results of different macro- and microscopic measurements, including magnetometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), resistivity, and muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR), we present a comparative study of Zr$_{0.96}$V$_{0.04}$B$_2$ and Hf$_{0.97}$V$_{0.03}$B$_2$. Their key magnetic and superconducting features are determined and the results are considered within the theoretical framework of multiband superconductivity proposed for MgB$_2$. Detailed Fermi surface (FS) and electronic structure calculations reveal the difference between MgB$_2$ and transition-metal diborides.

A new magnetic phase in the nickelate perovskite TlNiO$_3$

The RNiO$_3$ perovskites are known to order antiferromagnetically below a material-dependent Néel temperature $T_\text{N}$. We report experimental evidence indicating the existence of a second magnetically-ordered phase in TlNiO$_3$ above $T_\text{N} = 104$ K, obtained using nuclear magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation spectroscopy. The new phase, which persists up to a temperature $T_\text{N}^* = 202$ K, is suppressed by the application of an external magnetic field of approximately 1 T. It is not yet known if such a phase also exists in other perovskite nickelates.

Role of magnetic dopants in the phase diagram of Sm1111 pnictides: The Mn case

The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally-doped SmFeAsO0.88-F0.12 iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents (x) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy (muSR), both in zero- and in transverse fields, respectively, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order. The pure superconducting phase (at x < 0.03) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values (0.03 =< x < 0.08), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for x = 0.08, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of Tc and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors [M. Gastiasoro et al., ArXiv 1606.09495], which includes correlation-enhanced RKKY-couplings between the impurity moments.

Competing effects of Mn and Y doping on the low-energy excitations and phase diagram of La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ iron-based superconductors

Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) and $^{19}$F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements were performed to investigate the effect of Mn for Fe substitutions in La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors. While for $y = 0$ a very low critical concentration of Mn ($x = 0.2$%) is needed to quench superconductivity, as $y$ increases the negative chemical pressure introduced by Y for La substitution stabilizes superconductivity and for $y= 20$% it is suppressed at Mn contents an order of magnitude larger. A magnetic phase arises once superconductivity is suppressed both for $y$=0 and for $y= 20$%. Low-energy spin fluctuations give rise to a peak in $^{19}$F NMR $1/T_1$ with an onset well above the superconducting transition temperature and whose magnitude increases with $x$. Also the static magnetic correlations probed by $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show a marked increase with Mn content. The disruption of superconductivity and the onset of the magnetic ground-state are discussed in the light of the proximity of LaFeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ to a quantum critical point.

Pressure and magnetic field effects on a quasi-2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Cu(pz)2(ClO4)2 (with pz denoting pyrazine, C4H4N2) is among the best realizations of a two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet. Below T_N = 4.21 K, its weak interlayer couplings induce a 3D magnetic order, strongly influenced by external magnetic fields and/or hydrostatic pressure. Previous work, focusing on the [H, T] phase diagram, identified a spin-flop transition, resulting in a field-tunable bicritical point. However, the influence of external pressure has not been investigated yet. Here we explore the extended [p, H, T] phase diagram of Cu(pz)2(ClO4)2 under pressures up to 12 kbar and magnetic fields up to 7.1 T, via magnetometry and 35Cl nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The application of magnetic fields enhances T_XY , the crossover temperature from the Heisenberg to the XY model, thus pointing to an enhancement of the effective anisotropy. The applied pressure has an opposite effect [dT_N/dp = 0.050(8) K/kbar], as it modifies marginally the interlayer couplings, but likely changes more significantly the orbital reorientation and the square-lattice deformation. This results in a remodeling of the effective Hamiltonian, whereby the field and pressure effects compensate each other. Finally, by comparing the experimental data with numerical simulations we estimate T_BKT, the temperature of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless topological transition and argue why it is inaccessible in our case.

Pairing of weakly correlated electrons in the platinum-based centrosymmetric superconductor SrPt3P

We report a study of the normal- and superconducting-state electronic properties of the centrosymmetric compound SrPt3P via 31P nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) and magnetometry investigations. Essential features such as a sharp drop of the Knight shift at T < Tc and an exponential decrease of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation ratio 1/(T1T) below Tc are consistent with an s-wave electron pairing in SrPt3P, although a direct confirmation in the form of a Hebel-Slichter-type peak is lacking. Normal-state NMR data at T < 50 K indicate conventional features of the conduction electrons, typical of simple metals such as lithium or silver. Our data are finally compared with available NMR results for the noncentrosymmetric superconductors LaPt$_3$Si and CePt$_3$Si, which adopt similar crystal structures.

Slow magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in fluorine-doped NdFeAsO

Among the widely studied superconducting iron-pnictide compounds belonging to the Ln1111 family (with Ln a lanthanide), a systematic investigation of the crossover region between the superconducting and the antiferromagnetic phase for the Ln = Nd case has been missing. We fill this gap by focusing on the intermediate doping regime of NdFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by means of dc-magnetometry and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. The long-range order we detect at low fluorine doping is replaced by short-range magnetic interactions at x = 0.08, where also superconductivity appears. In this case, longitudinal-field muon-spin spectroscopy experiments show clear evidence of slow magnetic fluctuations that disappear at low temperatures. This fluctuating component is ascribed to the glassy-like character of the magnetically ordered phase of NdFeAsO at intermediate fluorine doping.

Crossover between magnetism and superconductivity in low H-doped LaFeAsO

By a systematic study of the hydrogen-doped LaFeAsO system by means of dc resistivity, dc magnetometry, and muon-spin spectroscopy we addressed the question of universality of the phase diagram of rare-earth-1111 pnictides. In many respects, the behaviour of LaFeAsO_(1-x)H_(x) resembles that of its widely studied F-doped counterpart, with H^- realizing a similar (or better) electron-doping in the LaO planes. In a x = 0.01 sample we found a long-range SDW order with T_n = 119 K, while at x = 0.05 the SDW establishes only at 38 K and, below T_c = 10 K, it coexists at a nanoscopic scale with bulk superconductivity. Unlike the abrupt M-SC transition found in the parent La-1111 compound, the presence a crossover region makes the H-doped system qualitatively similar to other Sm-, Ce-, or Nd-1111 families.

s-wave pairing in the optimally-doped LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor

We report on the magnetic and superconducting properties of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 by means of zero- (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin spectroscopy measurements (uSR). Contrary to previous results on iron-based superconductors, measurements in zero field demonstrate the absence of magnetically ordered phases. TF-uSR data give access to the superfluid density, which shows a marked 2D character with a dominant s-wave temperature behavior. The field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth confirms this finding and further suggests the presence of an anisotropic superconducting gap.
