Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

Spectral functions of the half-filled 1D Hubbard chain within the exchange-correlation potential formalism

The spectral functions of the one-band half-filled 1D Hubbard chain are calculated using the exchange-correlation potential formalism developed recently. The exchange-correlation potential is adopted from the exact potential derived from the Hubbard dimer. Within an approximation in which the full Green function is replaced by a non-interacting one, the spectral functions can be calculated analytically. Despite the simplicity of the approximation, the resulting spectra are in favorable agreement with the more accurate results obtained from the dynamic density-matrix renormalization group method. In particular, the calculated band gap as a function of $U$ is in close agreement with the exact gap obtained from the Bethe ansatz. In addition, the formal general solution to the equation of motion of the Green function is presented and the difference between the traditional self-energy approach and the exchange-correlation potential formalism is also discussed and elaborated. A simplified Holstein Hamiltonian is considered to further illustrate the general form of the exchange-correlation potential.

Opportunities for precision QCD physics in hadronization at Belle II -- a snowmass whitepaper

This document presents a selection of QCD studies accessible to high-precision studies with hadronic final states in $e^+e^-$ collisions at Belle II. The exceptionally clean environment and the state-of-the-art capabilities of the Belle~II detector (including excellent particle identification and improved vertex reconstruction), coupled with an unprecedented data-set size, will make possible to carry out multiple valuable measurements of the strong interaction including hadronic contributions to the muon $(g-2)$ and the QCD coupling, as well as advanced studies of parton hadronization and dynamical quark mass generation.

QCD Challenges from pp to A-A Collisions

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

Parton Radiation and Fragmentation from LHC to FCC-ee

This document collects the proceedings of the "Parton Radiation and Fragmentation from LHC to FCC-ee" workshop (http://indico.cern.ch/e/ee\_jets16) held at CERN in Nov. 2016. The writeup reviews the latest theoretical and experimental developments on parton radiation and parton-hadron fragmentation studies --including analyses of LEP, B-factories, and LHC data-- with a focus on the future perspectives reacheable in $e^+e^-$ measurements at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee), with multi-ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{8}$ jets from Z and W bosons decays as well as 10$^5$ gluon jets from Higgs boson decays. The main topics discussed are: (i) parton radiation and parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions (splitting functions at NNLO, small-$z$ NNLL resummations, global FF fits including Monte Carlo (MC) and neural-network analyses of the latest Belle/BaBar high-precision data, parton shower MC generators), (ii) jet properties (quark-gluon discrimination, $e^+e^-$ event shapes and multi-jet rates at NNLO+N$^{n}$LL, jet broadening and angularities, jet substructure at small-radius, jet charge determination, $e^+e^-$ jet reconstruction algorithms), (iii) heavy-quark jets (dead cone effect, charm-bottom separation, gluon-to-$b\bar{b}$ splitting), and (iv) non-perturbative QCD phenomena (colour reconnection, baryon and strangeness production, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac final-state correlations, colour string dynamics: spin effects, helix hadronization).

Challenges for QCD theory - some personal reflections -

At the LHC all processes are QCD ones, whether "signal" or "background". In this review the frontiers of current QCD research are addressed, towards increased understanding, improved calculational precision, and role in potential future discoveries. Issues raised include the limits of perturbative QCD calculations and parton distribution usage, the nature of multiparton interactions, the impact of colour reconnection on physical observables, the need for progress on hadronization modelling, the improvements of parton showers and their combination with the matrix-element description, the use of QCD concepts in Beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios, and the key position of event generators and other software in the successful exploration of LHC physics. On the way, several questions are posed, where further studies are needed.

A standard format for Les Houches Event Files

A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from parton-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. This information is embedded in a minimal XML-style structure, for clarity and to simplify parsing.

Transverse-Momentum-Ordered Showers and Interleaved Multiple Interactions

We propose a sophisticated framework for high-energy hadronic collisions, wherein different QCD physics processes are interleaved in a common sequence of falling transverse-momentum values. Thereby phase-space competition is introduced between multiple parton-parton interactions and initial-state radiation. As a first step we develop new transverse-momentum-ordered showers for initial- and final-state radiation, which should be of use also beyond the scope of the current article. These showers are then applied in the context of multiple interactions, and a few tests of the new model are presented. The article concludes with an outlook on further aspects, such as the possibility of a shower branching giving partons participating in two different interactions.

Multiple Interactions and the Structure of Beam Remnants

Recent experimental data have established some of the basic features of multiple interactions in hadron-hadron collisions. The emphasis is therefore now shifting, to one of exploring more detailed aspects. Starting from a brief review of the current situation, a next-generation model is developed, wherein a detailed account is given of correlated flavour, colour, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, encompassing both the partons initiating perturbative interactions and the partons left in the beam remnants. Some of the main features are illustrated for the Tevatron and the LHC.

Resummation and Shower Studies

The transverse momentum spectra of the Z and Higgs bosons are studied, as probes of the consequences of multiple parton emissions in hadronic events. Emphasis is put on constraints, present in showers, that go beyond conventional leading log. It is shown that, if such constraints are relaxed, better agreement can be obtained with experimental data and with resummation descriptions.

Progress on Multiple Interactions

We report on the development of a new model for the underlying event in hadron-hadron collisions. The model includes parton showers for all interactions, as well as non-trivial flavour, momentum, and colour correlations between interaction initiators and beam remnant partons.

Baryon Number Violation and String Topologies

In supersymmetric scenarios with broken R-parity, baryon number violating sparticle decays become possible. In order to search for such decays, a good understanding of expected event properties is essential. We here develop a complete framework that allows detailed studies. Special attention is given to the hadronization phase, wherein the baryon number violating vertex is associated with the appearance of a junction in the colour confinement field. This allows us to tell where to look for the extra (anti)baryon directly associated with the baryon number violating decay.

QCD Radiation off Heavy Particles

We study QCD radiation in decay processes involving heavy particles. As input, the first-order gluon emission rate is calculated in a number of reactions, and comparisons of the energy flow patterns show a non-negligible process dependence. To proceed further, the QCD parton shower language offers a convenient approach to include multi-gluon emission effects, and to describe exclusive event properties. An existing shower algorithm is extended to take into account the process-dependent mass, spin and parity effects, as given by the matrix element calculations. This allows an improved description of multiple gluon emission effects off b and t quarks, and also off nonstandard particles like squarks and gluinos. Phenomenological applications are presented for bottom production at LEP, Higgs particle decay to heavy flavours, top production and decay at linear colliders, and some simple supersymmetric processes.

Production and Hadronization of Heavy Quarks

Heavy long-lived quarks, i.e. charm and bottom, are frequently studied both as tests of QCD and as probes for other physics aspects within and beyond the standard model. The long life-time implies that charm and bottom hadrons are formed and observed. This hadronization process cannot be studied in isolation, but depends on the production environment. Within the framework of the string model, a major effect is the drag from the other end of the string that the c/b quark belongs to. In extreme cases, a small-mass string can collapse to a single hadron, thereby giving a non-universal flavour composition to the produced hadrons. We here develop and present a detailed model for the charm/bottom hadronization process, involving the various aspects of string fragmentation and collapse, and put it in the context of several heavy-flavour production sources. Applications are presented from fixed-target to LHC energies.

A Model for the Colour Form Factor of the Proton

The total cross-section and the jet cross-section differ at a proton-proton collision. The latter is divergent if arbitrarily small transverse momenta are allowed. Even with some fixed lower pt cutoff, increases the jet cross-section much faster than the total cross-section at high energies. We have in this paper studied how the divergence could be tamed by colour screening effects among the partons. To do this we have built a proton model where we assign momenta, positions and colour-charge to all partons in the proton. We find that the relative behaviour of the cross-section can be better understood by the inclusion of this effect.

Drag Effects in Charm Photoproduction

We have refined a model for charm fragmentation at hadron colliders. This model can also be applied to the photoproduction of charm. We investigate the effect of fragmentation on the distribution of produced charm quarks. The drag effect is seen to produce charm hadrons that are shifted in rapidity in the direction of the beam remnant. We also study the importance of different production mechanisms such as charm in the photon and from parton showers.

Soft-Particle Spectra as a Probe of Interconnection Effects in Hadronic W^+ W^- Events

Cross-talk between the W^+ and W^- sources of hadron production at LEP2 offers a hope to learn about basic properties of QCD, but at the same time threatens high-precision measurements of the W boson mass. Directly visible effects are not expected to be large, however. It is, therefore, important to develop methods to measure the level of interconnection in the data --- `connectometers'. In this article we study one particular set of observables, namely the reduced rate of low-momentum particle production caused by reconnection. In realistic scenarios the expected signals are at the border of visibility, but not quite beyond reach. Special studies on kaons and protons, or with other subsets of the data, could provide supporting evidence. We also show how LEP1 Z$^0$ events could be used to define an alternative reference sample.
