Cosmic Rays and Global Warming

It has been claimed by others that observed temporal correlations of terrestrial cloud cover with `the cosmic ray intensity' are causal. The possibility arises, therefore, of a connection between cosmic rays and Global Warming. If true, the implications would be very great. We have examined this claim to look for evidence to corroborate it. So far we have not found any and so our tentative conclusions are to doubt it. Such correlations as appear are more likely to be due to the small variations in solar irradiance, which, of course, correlate with cosmic rays. We estimate that less than 15% of the 11-year cycle warming variations are due to cosmic rays and less than 2% of the warming over the last 35 years is due to this cause.

Simulation of Ultra High Energy Neutrino Interactions in Ice and Water

The CORSIKA program, usually used to simulate extensive cosmic ray air showers, has been adapted to work in a water or ice medium. The adapted CORSIKA code was used to simulate hadronic showers produced by neutrino interactions. The simulated showers have been used to study the spatial distribution of the deposited energy in the showers. This allows a more precise determination of the acoustic signals produced by ultra high energy neutrinos than has been possible previously. The properties of the acoustic signals generated by such showers are described.

Stable Massive Particles at Colliders

We review the theoretical motivations and experimental status of searches for stable massive particles (SMPs) which could be sufficiently long-lived as to be directly detected at collider experiments. The discovery of such particles would address a number of important questions in modern physics including the origin and composition of dark matter in the universe and the unification of the fundamental forces. This review describes the techniques used in SMP-searches at collider experiments and the limits so far obtained on the production of SMPs which possess various colour, electric and magnetic charge quantum numbers. We also describe theoretical scenarios which predict SMPs and the phenomenology needed to model their production at colliders and interactions with matter. In addition, the interplay between collider searches and open questions in cosmology is addressed.

Simulation of Cosmic Ray neutrinos Interactions in Water

The program CORSIKA, usually used to simulate extensive cosmic ray air showers, has been adapted to a water medium in order to study the acoustic detection of ultra high energy neutrinos. Showers in water from incident protons and from neutrinos have been generated and their properties are described. The results obtained from CORSIKA are compared to those from other available simulation programs such as Geant4.

Heavy Flavour Production at HERA

Recent measurements of Charm and Beauty production at HERA are described. The charm results are well described by NLO QCD calculations with a somewhat better description in the CCFM than in the DGLAP evolution schemes. However, the Beauty results in both photoproduction and in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) are poorly described by such calculations.

xF3(gamma-Z) in Charged Lepton Scattering

Measurements of the structure function xF3(gamma-Z) are now becoming available in charged lepton deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The correction factors which are necessary to compare these with measurements of xF3(nu N) in neutrino-nucleon scattering are deduced and a comparison is made between the H1 and the CCFR data. A sum rule is derived for the structure function xF3(gamma-Z)measured in charged lepton scattering which is the analogue of the Gross Llewellyn-Smith sum rule for neutrino-nucleon scattering.

Spin physics in deep inelastic scattering: Summary

The problem of our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon has been with us since the publication of the EMC measurements of the polarised structure function of the proton in 1987. In this talk a review of the results presented in Working Group 6 at this workshop is given.

Spin physics in deep inelastic scattering

The problem of our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon has been with us since the publication of the EMC measurements of the polarised structure function of the proton in 1987. In this talk a brief history of the subject is given followed by a review of the results presented in this workshop and the progress made to date.

Nuclear beams in HERA

A study has been made of the physics interest and feasibility of experiments with nuclear beams in HERA. It is shown that such experiments widen considerably the horizon for probing QCD compared to that from free nucleon targets. In addition there is some sensitivity to physics beyond the standard model. Hence the option to include circulating nuclear beams in HERA allows a wide range of physics processes to be studied and understood.
